exhibited. Band composed of Germantown residents; once all its members<br />

taken prisoner by <strong>the</strong> Confeder<strong>at</strong>es. West lived till 1907 CW6345.A&B<br />

to rank of Major General in 1909. Became Surgeon General 1902. Letters written<br />

to family during his service.<br />

1. Accession 1890 Joseph Smith Harris autobiography—book written for his<br />

descendents. During CW he was assigned to topographical and engineering work<br />

on Capt Farragut’s staff. Witnessed <strong>the</strong> b<strong>at</strong>tle between <strong>the</strong> Monitor and <strong>the</strong><br />

Virginia from a distance and saw <strong>the</strong> Federal capture of New Orleans. Died in<br />

1910 <strong>at</strong> his home in Germantown.
