■ Manchester Airport says the trial of
a small-scale wind turbine on the roof
of Terminal Two has “proved
successful” with no impact on
operations. A feasibility study is being
prepared to examine the benefits of
erecting a number of these turbines
on Terminal Two to reduce the
airport’s reliance on supply from the
grid. From the beginning of April
2008, 30 per cent of the airport’s
electricity supply came from
renewable resources the airport said.
■ Accountancy firm Saffery
Champness is urging all North
West business owners that saw their
profits fall last year to make sure they
reduce their tax payments. Mike
Harrison, head of the firm’s
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS PLAN INTERNET TV STATION FOR OLDHAM
A new internet television station will start broadcasting in
Oldham from January 2009. Channel O, based at Earl Mill
in Hathershaw, will show music videos, short dramas and
factual programmes. Content will be decided by the 16 to
19 year-olds involved, none of whom are in training, jobs or
education. Two of the three directors are involved in social
enterprise businesses based at the mill but say the channel
will be run as a commercial venture. Keith Lucas is the
founder of Street College, a media production and training
company, and Bob Bell is a director at Enterprise Factory,
which helps new businesses. The directors have invested
their own money in the venture, although they would not
■ Richard Harvey, who quit last
year as chief executive of insurance
group Aviva in order to do charitable
work in Africa, is this year’s recipient
of The University of Manchester
Alumni Association’s Outstanding
Alumnus Award. He graduated in
1971 with a degree in mathematics
and went into insurance when his
sponsors, the Atomic Energy
Authority, cut back on its recruitment
plans.
initially make money through public sector sponsorship
and by larger companies fulfilling their corporate social
responsibility agendas, according to the directors. The plan
is to grow the channel’s audience virally as Oldham’s youth
spread the word through other online social sites. It will
then start placing adverts that target the youth market.
Earl Mill is getting £1.3m redevelopment funding as part of
the Hathershaw and Fitton Hill New Deal for the
Community. A planning application is in to turn part of the
mill into a video and audio recording studio for Channel O,
utilising some of that cash.
■ Manchester-based freight forwarder
Cardinal Maritime has signed a new
agency agreement in the US with
Troy Container Lines. Troy and Cardinal
will work together on an exclusive
basis for all for their weekly US
consolidation containers, both east and
westbound. “This is another
progression for us in establishing
ourselves as a major player in the US
trade,” said managing director Andrew
Smithurst.
■ Land around the east bank of
Rochdale’s River Roch will be
redeveloped to make way for a new
transport interchange and civic offices
in the town. A new restaurant and café
area is planned for the west bank. Work
finished last week on clearing and
remediating the site to prepare it for
construction work.
Tony Rafferty, founder of Printing.com, attended Sheffield University not Manchester
Business School, as stated in the story headed “University graduate start-up
numbers don’t add up” in the July 21 issue.
an energy from waste plant in Knowsley, Merseyside.
