THECORNERSTONESouth Florida Baptist Hospital Modernizesto Meet Community Needs$5 Million Renovation UnderwaySouth Florida Baptist Hospital (SFBH) is taking patient and family comfort to anew level with a $5 million renovation that will create spacious private rooms, moreaccessible, convenient parking and additional new amenities. “Our patients’ experiencein the hospital is a top priority,” says Steve Nierman, SFBH COO. “Several projectsare underway that will enhance comfort and convenience in addition to clinicalimprovements.”Surgical Floor Goes PrivateOne of thehospital’s goalswas to convertthe inpatientsurgical unitfrom a 36-bed,semi-private unitwith two patientsper room into anall-private wing.The new unitwill feature 16single occupancyNurse Stationprivate rooms, allwith their ownbathroom and shower. The floorspace per patient will increasethreefold. With the surgical floorrenovations, the hospital will havetwo all-private patient care units;the medical floor is also private.It also places South FloridaBaptist Hospital at the forefrontof a national trend toward morepatient privacy and away from thetraditional model of communalrooms and bathrooms.“Our plan is to eventually havePatient Roomall private rooms throughout thehospital,” says Nierman. “While patients routinely compliment South Florida BaptistHospital on the high-quality care, and friendly, attentive staff, we know that patientsprefer not to share a room or bathroom with another patient. Patients will be pleased to see thatthe rooms are very spacious – nearly double the size of previous rooms. That makesthem much more comfortable when families visit or when a loved one chooses to stayovernight on a sleeper sofa. Formerly housed at the Swindle Diagnostic Center,the new Breast Center is now at the main hospital and offersa dedicated area exclusively for patients who are undergoingexams such as breast ultrasound, bone density scans, digitalscreening mammography and diagnostic mammography.One of the highlights of the new center is the privacy. The areais locked and no one can see into the waiting area, which offerswomen a more comfortable, relaxed environment in which towait for testing, says Debi Brightwell, SFBH imaging manager.Women can store their belongings in individual lockers that areprogrammed with a four-digit code the patient selects.Newly designed room for breast ultrasounds.Because men sometimes need the services offered by the center,the hospital has also made provisions for their privacy, saysBrightwell. Men have a separate entrance and go straight into theexam room, not the waiting area.SFBH health care professionals in the Breast Center take anintensive national accrediting exam and must participatein annual continuing education to qualify as certifiedmammography technologists. Mammography screening examsare scheduled every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, withpatients receiving immediate communication about results afterthe image is reviewed by SFBH radiologists.“This gives women the peace of mind of knowing before theyleave that everything is fine,” says Brightwell. “If there is aconcern, additional testing can take place right then without thepatient having to wait for another day.”2SOUTH FLORIDA BAPTIST HOSPITAL FOUNDATION • SFBHFOUNDATION.ORG

Thenew outpatient lab offers several advantages – plenty of freeand convenient parking, as well as blood draw rooms that aremuch more private, says Karen Noyce, SFBH lab manager.There is also the convenience of having many HealthPointMedical Group physician offices located in the same facility.Patients needing their blood drawn can simply walk over andhave it done.The SFBH Weight Loss Surgery Program is yet anotherservice that will move into the Ed and Myrtle Lou SwindleMedical Arts Center. That move, which is expected to becomplete by Spring 2013, brings together weight loss servicesinto one location, including the weight loss informationsessions and support groups, as well as the services of theprofessional staff: Michelle Stracke, RD, LD/N, bariatricprogram manager; Sara Markham, registered dietitian;Allison Daughn, PhD, psychologist and Quincey Thoeni,health educator. Another added benefit – the weight losssurgeons are close by. C.R. Hall, MD, has his office at the Edand Myrtle Lou Swindle Medical Arts Center, while StephenButler, MD, has an office across the street.The greater Plant Citycommunity once againdemonstrated outstandingsupport for the hospital, withsome 600 people attendingthe 16th annual Diamondsand Denim in September. Thepopular SFBH Foundation galaat the Strawberry Festival ExpoHall raised $94,172.47, withproceeds going to the hospital’sarea of greatest need. “It was awonderful event for such a goodcause and everyone had a greattime,” says chairperson KimMcElveen. “I want to thank thecommunity for their support andthe many volunteers for all thatthey do to make the evening sosuccessful. We could not do thiswithout so many people whogive of their time and talent.”The event showcases “dressydenim” attire, great food,music and dancing, along withhighlights such as a silentauction, a 50/50 ticket raffleand a $5,000 diamond ringgoing to the winning ticketholder. Marilyn Plattner tookhome this year’s diamondring, while Diane Morrow wonthe raffle. A yearlater, the hospital added a full service line ofcardiac interventional services. Recently, thehospital welcomed two new interventionalcardiologists, Dr. Ketul Chauhan and Dr.Sunil Gupta.Dr. Ketul Chauhan is board certifiedin cardiovascular diseases and nuclearmedicine. He is a graduate of St. George’sUniversity School of Medicine in Grenada,West Indies, and was chief resident duringhis residency in internal medicine at theDr. Ketul ChauhanDr. Sunil GuptaUniversity of South Florida. Dr. Chauhanalso received fellowship training at USF incardiology and in interventional cardiology.Dr. Sunil Gupta is board certified incardiovascular disease and interventionalcardiology. He received his medical degreefrom Maulana Azod Medical College in Indiaand was chief resident during his internalmedicine residency at New York MedicalCollege.
