<strong>Meet</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>Hospital</strong>'s</strong> <strong>Leadership</strong> <strong>Team</strong>Mary HippsYou might say MaryHipps grew up at SouthFlorida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>.She was 13 when shebegan working in <strong>the</strong>dietary department, firstin <strong>the</strong> kitchen and later in <strong>the</strong> office. After highschool, she and her husband lived for a short time inAvon Park, but in 1975, <strong>the</strong>y came back, and Maryhas been in <strong>the</strong> purchasing department ever since.Today, she is <strong>the</strong> manager of distribution andoversees <strong>the</strong> hospital’s inventory of supplies.“Whatever is needed, we purchase, process anddeliver it,” says Mary. That includes everything fromBand aids, lotions, toothbrushes and slippers, to papertowels, gloves, syringes, intravenous solutions, sterilegloves, medications and more. Her department’s goalthis year is to meet a 96 percent “fill rate,” whichmeans supplies reach patients on time when<strong>the</strong>y’re needed.South Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>’s affiliation with<strong>the</strong> BayCare Health System allows <strong>the</strong> hospital tobenefit from group purchasing contracts, providingsubstantial savings through “economies of scale.”South Florida’s computerized inventory system islinked with <strong>the</strong> BayCare system.Mary is a Plant City native. She and herhusband Edd have been married 35 years and havethree children and four grandchildren. “SouthFlorida Baptist is my home away from home, but Icherish time with my husband and love weekendga<strong>the</strong>rings with my children and friends,” she says. “Ialso live for Sunday morning worship services at mychurch, Wisdom Center Place of Fellowship.”Debi BrightwellSouth Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong> has been travelingat a rapid pace of technology improvement, says DebiBrightwell, manager of imaging services since 2004.Under her direction, <strong>the</strong> hospital has acquiredmany new imaging tools – a digital PACS (picturearchival communication); radiology managementsystem; a new 1.5 Short Bore MRI; 4-D Ultrasound;two Digital Radiology Units and in <strong>the</strong> near future, a64-slice CT Scan, one of <strong>the</strong> most advanced CT unitsavailable today.Debi is a graduate of <strong>the</strong> Lakeland RegionalMedical Center radiology program and received acertificate of proficiency in sonography fromHillsborough Community College. She <strong>the</strong>n went onto receive a bachelor’s degree in management fromWarner Sou<strong>the</strong>rn College and a master’s in businessfrom Florida Sou<strong>the</strong>rn College. Her list of credentialsis extensive. She is registered in diagnostic medicalsonography, cardiac sonography, vascular technologyand radiologic technology. She is also currentlyworking toward credentialing as a certified radiologyadministrator (CRA) and is often a speaker at local,state and national conferences.Debi grew up in Lake Alfred, and she and herhusband Scott now live in Lakeland. She enjoysplaying <strong>the</strong> piano and outdoor sports, includingrunning. She is also proud that she has never missed aday of work in her entire career. In fact she hadperfect attendance at school, starting in <strong>the</strong> primarygrades all <strong>the</strong> way through college. “I like to challengemyself in everything I do,” she says. She sings in <strong>the</strong> choir atFirst Baptist Church of Plant City, performs with <strong>the</strong> handbell choir and enjoys playing <strong>the</strong> piano and <strong>the</strong> harp.Robert P. Brown, Secretary/TreasurerRobert Brown has been with Sunshine <strong>St</strong>ate FederalSavings and Loan Association in Plant City since 1985and is currently executive vice president and treasurer. Heis a University of South Florida graduate.Robert serves as a city commissioner and vice mayor ofPlant City. He is also a past chairman of <strong>the</strong> Greater PlantCity Chamber of Commerce; a trustee with <strong>the</strong> Boys andGirls Club; past chairman of <strong>the</strong> United Way of PlantCity; a founding member of <strong>the</strong> Children’s Board ofHillsborough County; and a member of <strong>the</strong> Kiwanis Club,where he is chairman of <strong>the</strong> youth service committee and apast president. He and his wife Wendy are members of FirstBaptist Church of Plant City.Hal Brewer, M.D., Board MemberHal Brewer, M.D., is a well-known Plant City areaphysician who retired in 1995 after more than 30 years as amember of <strong>the</strong> hospital’s medical staff. He served aspresident of <strong>the</strong> SFBH medical staff several times.Dr. Brewer came to <strong>the</strong> area in 1960, after graduationfrom medical school at <strong>the</strong> University of Mississippi.There were just 12 doctors on <strong>the</strong> South Florida Baptist<strong>Hospital</strong> staff at <strong>the</strong> time. He is a long-time supporter of<strong>the</strong> Foundation and has assisted with Diamonds & Denimand several hospital capital (building) campaigns. He isalso a member of <strong>the</strong> Kiwanis Club of Plant City,Toastmasters, Friends of <strong>the</strong> Library and <strong>the</strong> Plant CityEntertainment Group community <strong>the</strong>ater.Fred Johnson, Board MemberThe Johnson family restaurants are almost a householdname in Plant City. For years, Fred Johnson’s parentsowned <strong>the</strong> popular Johnson’s Restaurant and later, Fredand his bro<strong>the</strong>r ran BuddyFreddy’s. Now, Fred and his wifeTammy operate Fred’s Market and Grandpa Johnson’sBarbeque in Plant City and a second Fred’s Market inLakeland. Additional restaurants are planned for Bartow.When Fred’s not busy with his restaurants, he might beat his farm, a 40-acre grove and pasture just north ofTampa. He is also active with <strong>the</strong> Chamber of Commerce,where he serves on <strong>the</strong> board of directors and is a pastchairman.In addition, he is a past member of <strong>the</strong>Hillsborough River Basin Board.Al Whitaker, Board MemberIn 1994, Al retired as president and chairman of <strong>the</strong>board of Whitaker and Sons, Inc., a constructionmanagement and engineering firm in <strong>the</strong> Boston area, andmoved to Plant City with his wife Norma. For severalyears, he served as a volunteer administrator of First BaptistChurch of Plant City and continues to be involved withchurches locally and in New England. He also affiliatedwith Telemissions International.Al is a member of several hospital boards, including <strong>St</strong>.Joseph’s-Baptist Health Care, <strong>the</strong> BayCare Health SystemBoard and <strong>the</strong> South Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong> board oftrustees. What you might not know about him is he has apassion for books – he has about 4,000 in his personal library.Coleman Davis, Board MemberColeman Davis has spent his entire career with <strong>the</strong>W.S. Badcock Corporation, now known as Badcock &More. At one time he owned five furniture dealerships in<strong>the</strong> Tampa area, but currently has two in Plant City andZephyrhills.Coleman is a deacon and assistant adult SundaySchool teacher at First Baptist Church of Plant City and along-time member of <strong>the</strong> Plant City Lion’s Club, where hehas a record of perfect attendance for <strong>the</strong> past 26 years. Heis also a former president and board member of <strong>the</strong> Lion’sClub summer camp for visually impaired children in LakeWales. In addition, Coleman is active with <strong>the</strong> Chamberof Commerce and is a member of <strong>the</strong> Sun Trust advisoryboard of directors. “Ladies Night Out” a SuccessRed Rose Dining Room Executive Chef Riccardo Ciabattidemonstrates healthy cookingWith today’s busy lifestyles, most women find <strong>the</strong>y haveto be experts in multi-tasking. How do <strong>the</strong>y find time to takecare of <strong>the</strong>mselves when <strong>the</strong>y’re so busy taking care ofeveryone else?That was <strong>the</strong> idea behind Ladies Night Out, a new seriesexclusively for women, co-sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Foundation and<strong>the</strong> hospital. The first event in June, “Calories In, CaloriesOut – Healthy Approaches to Weight Loss,” was a big hit,with a sell-out crowd of 66 guests in attendance and manyfavorable comments.Program participants Dr. <strong>St</strong>eve Smith, Sara Markham and DaveDavenport answer questions from <strong>the</strong> audience.In keeping with <strong>the</strong> program’s <strong>the</strong>me, Mike Ambrosino,SFBH executive chef, served a light supper of grilled chickenand turkey wraps, along with fresh fruit salad. Guests also hada chance to win door prizes such as an electronic bathroomscale, digital kitchen scale, an exercise ball and 5 lb. weights.Guest speakers included Riccardo Ciabatti, executive chefof <strong>the</strong> Red Rose Inn and Suites, who talked about cookingwith healthy, fresh ingredients and enticed <strong>the</strong> audience with<strong>the</strong> aroma of garlic and tomatoes as he prepared Red RoseShrimp Scampi and Bruschetta. SFBH occupational <strong>the</strong>rapistDave Davenport entered <strong>the</strong> room dressed for action in fullmountain biking gear – perfect for his talk on how to get morephysically active.Sara Markham, a SFBH registered dietitian andnutritionist, discussed eating healthy on <strong>the</strong> run, surprising <strong>the</strong>crowd with just how many calories and fat grams are inpopular fast food items. <strong>St</strong>eve Smith, M.D., a SFBH internalmedicine physician, told <strong>the</strong> audience what to look for in asafe, healthy diet, and how to tailor it to better fit <strong>the</strong>ir needs.Mark your calendar now for <strong>the</strong> next two Ladies Night Outprograms: “Menopause,” on August 16, and “Breast Cancer,Breast Health,” on October 18. <strong>Hospital</strong> Receives National Award for Heart Attack CareSouth Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>delivers outstanding care to patientsrecovering from acute myocardialinfarction or a heart attack, saysPremier Inc., a national healthcarealliance organization.Premier analyzed data fromnearly 400 participating hospitalsacross <strong>the</strong> country and selected 51that <strong>the</strong>y said outperformed all of <strong>the</strong>o<strong>the</strong>rs in six clinical areas:treatment of heart attack; coronaryartery bypass graft; heart failure; hipand knee replacement; pneumonia;and obstetrical care. Donors were asked to pay tribute to <strong>the</strong>SFBH Medical <strong>St</strong>aff by making a financial contribution to <strong>the</strong>Foundation in honor of a doctor(s) who has made a significantdifference in <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Donations will be used to help fund a newphysician’s lounge.The response to both campaigns has been outstanding. This year,nearly $11,000 was raised and 51 physicians were honored. Last year, 65doctors were honored and <strong>the</strong> same amount of money was raised. Manypatients included heartfelt notes of appreciation with <strong>the</strong>ir contribution.These were personally delivered to <strong>the</strong> doctors, along with a card from<strong>the</strong> Foundation.In addition, a special SFBH Doctor’s Day celebration wascoordinated by <strong>the</strong> hospital’s Medical <strong>St</strong>aff Services department andincluded a gourmet breakfast and lunch, chair massages and <strong>the</strong>announcement of Martin Girling, D.P.M., a podiatrist, as physicianspecialist of <strong>the</strong> year; and Khizzar Shaukat, M.D., a hospitalist, asphysician of <strong>the</strong> year.
