<strong>Meet</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>Hospital</strong>'s</strong> <strong>Leadership</strong> <strong>Team</strong>Bob DexterIf he worked for amanufacturer, Bob Dextermight be responsible forfinding ways to improve<strong>the</strong> product, streamline<strong>the</strong> process, identify snagsin <strong>the</strong> system and reduce costs. But instead, he’s <strong>the</strong>manager of Quality Improvement and Safety at SouthFlorida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>. The process improvementteams he leads are focused on how to improve patientcare to make sure it’s safe, compassionate, efficientand effective.“I help teams identify areas for improvement,implement <strong>the</strong> changes and measure <strong>the</strong> results,” saysBob. Originally from Maine, Bob earned his bachelor’sand master’s degrees, moved to New York to work withinner city children, and <strong>the</strong>n headed to Florida and ajob in banking before switching to health care. Hejoined South Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong> eight years ago.During <strong>the</strong> past year-and-a-half, he hascoordinated teams participating in <strong>the</strong> 100,000 LivesCampaign, a national program in which 3,000hospitals across <strong>the</strong> country implemented six “bestpractices.” Each hospital adopted improved methodsof care in areas such as preventing infection andreducing treatment time for heart attack patients. Theresults were dramatic. At South Florida Baptist alone,“we saved <strong>the</strong> lives of 174 patients and saw a 20 to 30percent reduction in mortality rate,” says Bob.When he’s not busy at work, Bob and his wifeBess and 14-year-old son Garrett enjoy hiking,boating, fishing and scuba diving – any activitiesoutdoors, he says. This past year <strong>the</strong> family spenttwo weeks in Washington <strong>St</strong>ate hiking <strong>the</strong> OlympicNational Forest, Mt. Rainier and <strong>the</strong> CascadeMountains.Judy MartinBuilding constituency might be <strong>the</strong>me of JudyMartin’s life. From her early career with TampaElectric Company to her position today as <strong>the</strong>executive director of <strong>the</strong> South Florida Baptist<strong>Hospital</strong> Foundation, one of Judy’s strengths has beena talent for relationship-building. “People have a stakein what <strong>the</strong>y help create,” she says.Eleven years ago, not long after her retirementfrom a 32-year career at Tampa Electric, Judy joinedSouth Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>, first as a developmentassociate and <strong>the</strong>n three years later, as <strong>the</strong> firstfull-time executive director of <strong>the</strong> Foundation.Since <strong>the</strong>n, working with a dynamic group ofFoundation board members and volunteers, she hashelped raise millions of dollar for <strong>the</strong> hospital throughtwo major capital campaigns – <strong>the</strong> new Surgery Centerin 2000 and <strong>the</strong> new Emergency Department in 2006– as well as popular special events such as Lights ofLove, Fall Fancy and Diamonds & Denim, and <strong>the</strong>annual SFB team member campaign.After a childhood spent moving frequently whileher fa<strong>the</strong>r was a career military officer, Judy graduatedfrom Florida <strong>St</strong>ate University and took a job withTampa Electric, first as a home economist and laterwith <strong>the</strong> company’s marketing department. A strong belief in <strong>the</strong>organization’s mission, a desire to makea difference in <strong>the</strong> community andgratitude for help that family andfriends received are among <strong>the</strong> mostcommon reasons for giving.Ask South Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>team members why <strong>the</strong>y give and mostwould cite <strong>the</strong> reasons above, butalmost always <strong>the</strong>ir first response is thisone: because <strong>the</strong> hospital feels like alarge, friendly family – supportive,welcoming and positive.Deborah Perry, RN in Labor and Delivery,monitors a patient on state of <strong>the</strong> art equipment.“I’ve worked at several differenthospitals and never contributed to anyo<strong>the</strong>r team member campaigns exceptfor here,” says Deborah Perry, aregistered nurse in labor and delivery,and a South Florida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>team member for <strong>the</strong> past five years.“I’m always inspired when I walkby <strong>the</strong> cafeteria and see <strong>the</strong> wall ofphotos of so many employees who haveworked here for 30 years or more –some even for 45 years,” says Perry. “Ilike knowing that I can walk down <strong>the</strong>hall and people say hello. Whensomeone has a problem, <strong>the</strong> team joinstoge<strong>the</strong>r to help, and in turn we wantto help <strong>the</strong> hospital, to see <strong>the</strong>organization thrive and grow.”Perry also points to <strong>the</strong> need forcommunity support to ensure thatSouth Florida Baptist continues toremain financially viable. “My parentslive here in Plant City and I want tomake sure that <strong>the</strong>y have excellen<strong>the</strong>alth care right here in <strong>the</strong>ir ownbackyard, just a few minutes away,” shesays. “When <strong>the</strong>y need help, I don’twant <strong>the</strong>m to have to drive to Tampaor Lakeland or Brandon.”Amelia Harris is one of SouthFlorida Baptist <strong>Hospital</strong>’s long-timeemployees – a 30-plus year food servicerepresentative. <strong>Team</strong> Members Offer Extraordinary Support– ContinuedMember Annual Giving Campaign in 1997. Without anyhistory or experience to draw upon, it was hard to knowwhat <strong>the</strong> results might be. But <strong>the</strong> precedent was set –team member support was very positive, with 123employees raising a total of $13,827 for <strong>the</strong> campaign.Just four years later, in 2001, <strong>the</strong> campaign had not onlygained tremendous visibility, but <strong>the</strong> statistics had morethan doubled: 265 team members contributed a total of$25,000, surpassing <strong>the</strong> $23,000 goal.By 2005, <strong>the</strong> number of team members donating hadgrown to 435, with a total amount raised of $41,612 –$6, 000 above goal. And this year, <strong>the</strong> results were <strong>the</strong>best in <strong>the</strong> campaign’s history, with 496 employeesdonating a total of $47,342.A clinical pharmacist, Bob Kauffman has been atSouth FloridaBaptist <strong>Hospital</strong>for eight years.“It’s a goodplace to workand a good placeto give moneyto,” he says. “Iknow my moneyis going toworthwhilecauses like <strong>the</strong>new emergencydepartment andRobert Kauffman, Clinical Pharmacist, ensures<strong>the</strong> pediatriccenter.
