<strong>Gre<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Otway</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ional</strong> <strong>Park</strong><strong>Camping</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong> <strong>at</strong> Vehicle Based CampsitesBlanket Bay, <strong>Park</strong>er Hill, Aire River East & West and JohannaMinimal impact bushwalking:Bushwalking is an increasingly popular activity in <strong>Gre<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>Otway</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ional</strong> <strong>Park</strong>, with schools, othergroups and especially with the growth of the <strong>Gre<strong>at</strong></strong> Ocean Roads visit<strong>at</strong>ion. Veget<strong>at</strong>ion trampling,spread of disease, littering, escaped fires, and the deterior<strong>at</strong>ion of walking tracks and campsites areall risks to the health of the park and in some cases the health of visitors. As more people visit thepark, the need to protect the n<strong>at</strong>ural, cultural and environmental values is even more important.The adoption of minimal impact bushwalking practices can minimise the impact on the park andensure th<strong>at</strong> access to these areas continues into the future. There are limited areas available forcamping and your cooper<strong>at</strong>ion is required to help us improve your experience while visiting the park.To help groups plan a minimal impact visit, <strong>Park</strong>s <strong>Victoria</strong> has established a registr<strong>at</strong>ion system andinform<strong>at</strong>ion package. I would appreci<strong>at</strong>e if you could take the time to read the following inform<strong>at</strong>ion.Registering for Hiking and <strong>Camping</strong>:Step 1 - An Applic<strong>at</strong>ion Form to be filled out supplying the following inform<strong>at</strong>ion;• Group/Organis<strong>at</strong>ion name• D<strong>at</strong>es of the intended trip including return d<strong>at</strong>e• Contact details• Vehicle registr<strong>at</strong>ions and where they will be parked• The number of people in each group• A clear description of all activities you plan to undertake• The areas you plan to utilise• Where you intend to camp• The route of day or overnight walks• Type of communic<strong>at</strong>ion device for contact during the hikeStep 2 - Please ensure your applic<strong>at</strong>ion is forwarded to the Apollo Bay Office <strong>at</strong> least 4 weeks beforeyour intended hike.Step 3 - <strong>Park</strong>s <strong>Victoria</strong> will review the applic<strong>at</strong>ion and options, notifying you <strong>at</strong> least 2 weeks beforethe commencement of the hike with the registr<strong>at</strong>ion detailsStep 4 - Each group hiking must carry a copy of the Registr<strong>at</strong>ion. Original to be carried by theRegistr<strong>at</strong>ion Holder.Planning your trip:♦ Keep the group size small. Groups of 4-8 have the least impact. Maximum group size is sixteen.♦ Only one group within your school/organis<strong>at</strong>ion to camp in each campsite <strong>at</strong> the one time unlessotherwise approved by <strong>Park</strong>s <strong>Victoria</strong>.♦ No alter<strong>at</strong>ion to trip intention, planned camping areas, d<strong>at</strong>es, route etc without prior permissionfrom <strong>Park</strong>s <strong>Victoria</strong>.<strong>Camping</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion:♦ <strong>Camping</strong> is permitted in current design<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ional</strong> <strong>Park</strong> camping areas. If you wish to campusing the any of the <strong>Gre<strong>at</strong></strong> Ocean Walk campsites, then they need to book through the <strong>Gre<strong>at</strong></strong>ocean walk registr<strong>at</strong>ion system. See: www.gre<strong>at</strong>oceanwalk.com.au♦ Due to cultural values and environmental sensitivity, camping is not permitted in the <strong>Otway</strong><strong>N<strong>at</strong>ional</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>at</strong> Point Franklin and between Cape <strong>Otway</strong> and Aire River. If you wish to stay nearthis area, please seek altern<strong>at</strong>ive accommod<strong>at</strong>ion outside of the park <strong>at</strong> Bimbi <strong>Park</strong>, Cape <strong>Otway</strong>Ocean Lodge, Shearw<strong>at</strong>er Cottages or The Cape <strong>Otway</strong> Centre for Conserv<strong>at</strong>ion Ecology.


On the right track:♦ Stay on formed tracks to prevent veget<strong>at</strong>ion trampling, erosion and the spread of weeds and soilp<strong>at</strong>hogens.♦ Please brush boots <strong>at</strong> design<strong>at</strong>ed boot st<strong>at</strong>ions to minimise the spread of weed seeds andcinnamon fungus (Phytopthora cinnamomi). Many areas of the park have veget<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is veryvulnerable to this p<strong>at</strong>hogen.♦ Hiking between Crayfish Bay and the Cape <strong>Otway</strong> Lightst<strong>at</strong>ion is only permitted via thedesign<strong>at</strong>ed inland route. Access is not available along the coastal route.Fires/Fire Wood:♦ Fires may only be lit in constructed fireplaces provided. Fuel stoves should be used in all otherareas.♦ Before you leave, be absolutely sure the fire is out. Use w<strong>at</strong>er to extinguish your fire.♦ Please provide your own firewood. Collection of firewood is not permitted within the <strong>Otway</strong><strong>N<strong>at</strong>ional</strong> <strong>Park</strong>.♦ No solid fuel fires or gas/fuel stoves and lanterns may be lit on days of Total Fire Ban. Please beaware th<strong>at</strong> these may occur while you are hiking. Inform<strong>at</strong>ion on Total Fire Bans are given duringthe we<strong>at</strong>her segments of the hourly news broadcasts on ABC frequency 774 on the AM dial.W<strong>at</strong>er & personal waste:♦ Please provide your own drinking w<strong>at</strong>er.♦ Do not dispose of soapy w<strong>at</strong>er or wash in w<strong>at</strong>erways.♦Walker safety:♦ The Cape <strong>Otway</strong> area is subject to extremes in we<strong>at</strong>her conditions and has many remote areasdifficult to access in case of emergency.♦ Ensure th<strong>at</strong> you are equipped for your walk and be prepared for sudden changes in we<strong>at</strong>herconditions.♦ Be aware of snakes- this is their environment and they are protected here. Keep a safe distance.♦ Keep on tracks and away from cliff edges.♦ Mobile phones will not work in many parts of the <strong>Otway</strong> <strong>N<strong>at</strong>ional</strong> <strong>Park</strong>.
