While at SUA I rose throughthe ranks to the post <strong>of</strong> Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1994. This recognitionwas a result <strong>of</strong> contributions we made with colleagues in theRe-union <strong>of</strong> Class <strong>of</strong> <strong>1976</strong>Page 21


Department <strong>of</strong> Soil Science at SUA through two major projects namelythe Agrogeology and Benchmark soils projects. The Agrogeologyproject work laid the foundation for the growing interest in theutilisation <strong>of</strong> Minjingu rock phosphate in East African agriculture. Thiswork is aptly captured in a recently published book entitled “Rocks forCrops: Agrominerals <strong>of</strong> Sub Saharan Africa by Peter van Straatenwww.uoguelph.ca/~geology/rocks_for_crops”. Between September1996 and May 1997 I spent a sabbatical leave at the InternationalFertilizer Development Centre (IFDC) in the USA as a Fulbright SeniorScholar. In November 1997 I was appointed as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Head <strong>of</strong>Soil Science at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Fort Hare where I continue to serve inthat capacity to date.
