Spectating atHOW TO SPECTATE IN THEFORESTIn a Performance Rally the cars arestarted at one-minute intervals with thefastest cars first and the slowest carslast. This starting order is based on thedrivers seeding which reflects their performanceover the previous two years. To insure that you see the top drivers inaction, you should make sure you arriveat your spectating spot early. While theearly drivers will be fastest, they maynot appear to be, as they usually are verysmooth. It’s not until you see some ofthe back markers struggle to get aroundthe corners at a slower speed, that youwill really appreciate the skill of thefront runners. To make spectating even more interestingyou can try checking the times thatthe cars arrive at a point. Pick a placewhere you can time a car each time andread the seconds off your watch. Rememberthat all cars leave at the top ofthe minute, so if the first car arrives at21 seconds, the next at 28 and the nextat 25. The first car is 4 seconds fasterthan the third and 7 seconds faster thanthe second. You will be amazed at howmuch quicker the front-runners are thanthe others. After several cars you mayget times where the seconds are around20 seconds again, these are over a minuteslower that the first car.A word of warning to you when youare spectating – STAY BEHIND THEYELLOW BANNER TAPE. Oftenwhen a driver is listening to the co-drivercalling the corners and mileages downto an upcoming corner, they will be concentratingon that and may not see alongthe road. Drivers have gone throughspectator areas where 1000 people aregathered and not noticed them becausethey are concentrating on driving at theirmaximum. The yellow banner tape has beenplaced by the rally organizers and reviewedby safety officials. Behind theyellow banner is as safe as you can getand still spectate. DO NOT POSITIONYOURSELF BEHIND RED BANNERTAPE. Those areas are extremely dangerous. If you are seen there, you willbe asked to move. Staying behind theRED BANNER tape can result in thestage being cancelled.HOW TO SPECTATE SAFELYStage rallying is one of the mostexciting and demanding of motorsports. It has also been one of the most difficultfor the spectator to get to and to watch– except at STPR ® .While some of the four STPR ® 2013spectator points in the woods are not inyour backyard, you can be assured ofseeing real Rally action. Plus, you havethe opportunity to see the cars twice ina “stadium”. We give you four excitingday light spectating areas and the fournight stadium stages within a short driveof Wellsboro.Safety at the forest spectator points isall-important, especially with the largecrowds expected this year. It really isjust a matter of common sense, but forthose who have never watched a Performance/Stagerally before, here are afew helpful tips.= Remember that the cars are attheir limit. A mechanical or drivererror may cause it to go out of control. Also, that as speed doubles, energy goes up by four. Out ofcontrol cars go farther and hitharder.= Please follow the Spectator Marshals’directions at each spectatorpoint. While spectating is free, wedo have control over these areas. Please stay behind the yellow bannertape.= DO NOT spectate at a location thatdoes not have a Spectator Marshaland yellow tape bannering. Youshould be in sight of a marshalwhile cars are on course. Spectatorsin unauthorized areas WILLcause the rally to shut down.= Pick your vantage point carefully.High on a hill or behind the treeline is best. Rally drivers are atthe limits of control and they makecreative use of the whole road.Leave yourself an escape route ifone is needed. Again listen to themarshals. They know the safe locations. You must remain behindthe yellow banner tape at all times.= Be wary and alert at all times. Beready to move if a car is out ofcontrol, don’t sit down. DO NOTturn your back to rally traffic unlessyou have a buddy spotting foryou. The cars make far less noisethan they once did. Also, some carswill catch others on the stage andtheir sound will be masked by thatof the first car.= Please follow the marshal’s directionswhen parking your car at thespectator areas. We must keep aclear access on one side of thesenarrow roads for emergency vehicles. All cars should park on thesame side of the road and be headingin the proper direction to leavethe area. If you follow the next ruleyou shouldn’t have to walk too far. When you get to the end of the lineof parked cars, PARK. You won’tbe able to park or turn around todrive back out. Backing that farcan be fun.= Plan your spectating. Travel timeto get to each of the spectatorpoints is listed on the followingpages. You can only see the carstwice if you stay for both stages atWilson Point or Twelve Mile.= And plan on stopping out at theTioga County Fairgrounds to seethe cars up close and then to watchthe teams go around the SuperSpecial Stage. Entry is $5 perperson.6

Stage Descriptions forStages 4, 5, 15 and 16 Super Special DescriptionThe Super Special stages offer thespectator a chance to see the rally carsin head to head competition in a settingwhere the full stage is in view. The stagemap shows the course(s) that the carsfollow. (If you can trace the route on themap, you are better than I am! Come outon Friday and Saturday evenings andfollow their route.)The teams will start with the slowercars first working up to the leaders asthey return to the Fairgrounds. Withtwo cars starting at the same time, differences in speed, technique and teamability will be evident. The differencesin style should demonstrate the skillsneeded to drive fast on dirt. The cars will start on each side atthe start line once. The first of the twocars staging can choose their side first. They make the loop they started on, gopast the grandstands and do the secondloop. As a result each car travels thesame distance. After going in front of the spectatorsthe second time, they make an acute turnaround a big tire on the left side and runback to the finish line. The car leadingat the finish line is faster than the other. After the finish line, and when bothcars have finished, the teams will crossover to the opposite side and run thecourse a second time. They again turnaround the big tire after the second passby the spectators and race back to thefinish line. After their two runs they drive outthrough the racing lanes and up thehill where they entered the course andback into the display area. Take theopportinity to check out the cars andteams before and after the Super Specialstages. Any damage suffered during theSaturday forest stages can be seen bycomparing the conditon between Fridayand Saturday. We hope you enjoy the wheel towheel racing. We expect that it will addsignificantly to the show. The super special stages are 0.96miles long. There are no records for the newconfiguration.Come out to theSuper Special Stagesat the FairgoundsENJOY15

Stage Descriptions forStage 6 Phasa DescriptionSponsored by: Citizens & Northern BankStartFinishSpectator AreaThe first half of the stage is veryfast, as it has a deceptively gradualdescent down a wooded valley andalong a stream to the spectator area. This section has nice flowing curves, with a firm clay and sand surface thatcan be slippery when wet. In the firstthree miles, there are deep gutters, especially on the right hand side andStage Records16soft road edges which have claimedtheir victims over the years. The bridgeat the spectator area is a large concretebridge with a curb on the left hand side.If a team cuts the corner at the apex, their car could suffer significant damage, enough to cost them the rally! The stage then twists and climbsout of the valley over a firm clay roadsurface with some shale, onto severalvery fast straighter sections out of thewoods. After a “vista” turn the routereenters the woods to finish. The stage is 9.87 miles long.Phasa, which is the traditional Asaphstage run in reverse, was last used in2002. By the time I was 10I had moved into national kart racing. I was a highlysuccessful karter, winning seven titles against driversincluding David Coulthard. I still enjoy karting today. As soon as I got the chance I moved into rallying andwas invited to drive in the team that Richard Burnsdrove for in the Peugeot 205 Challenge. After just oneseason I gained a works drive for Peugeot and wonClass A5 in the British Rally Championship in 1994.I have gained valuable experience on World andAsian Pacific rallies doing gravel notes for RichardBurns, Colin McRae and his brother Mark. I have alsocompeted in places including Peru, China, Australia,Finland, Russia, USA, France, Italy and Mexico. One of my most acknowledged skills is thathe can develop a car to ensure it gains the bestpossible results. Over the years I has been involvedin testing for manufactures including Subaru, Seat,Proton, Peugeot and VW. In 2004 and 2005 I wasthe Mitsubishi test driver for the WRC team. My dream has always been to be involved withRally Cars. My pathway there started as a little boy. I wassurrounded by cars due to my grandfather and father owninga mechanic shop. They taught me everything I know aboutcars. I took any opportunity available to ride motorcyclesand co-drive off-road trucks. These experiences preparedme to be able to read the "terrain". After high school, Istarted go-karting to get experience and then was able toget a few cars to start racing at Glen Helen in Rally Car andRally Cross. My first year was tremendous and my familysupported me in continuing in Rally Car and in becoming astunt driver. I was able to put my driving skills to work on areality TV show being filmed in Los Angeles; this experiencetaught me new racing skills. After this, I was able to do sometraining with Team O'Neil, bought a Ford Fiesta R2 to racein the National Series and began the pursuit to the WRCAcademy. FromRegional-levelcompetitorsoften tell aninteresting taleBy Marilyn RandallAfter having many different jobs atSTPR ® over the years, I chose to workwith my daughter, MaryAnne Shults, who was the co-press officer, for the36th running of the Waste ManagementSusquehannock Trail Rally ® , presentedby Citizens and Northern Bank, heldJune 1-2, based out of the Tioga CountyFairgrounds near Wellsboro, Pa.On Friday, I headed for the Green, asmall park in Wellsboro, where the 65entrants' cars were gridded at the ParkExposé. Here the teams have a chanceto show off their cars to their fans, anddo last minute repairs before getting thegreen flag and transiting to the first stage.I knew that many of the top-seededdrivers would be too busy with otherinterviews, so I decided to concentrateon those teams further back in theorder, which did not get much publicity, namely those competing in the tworegional-level rallies, the SherwoodForest Rally and the Finger Lakes Rally.28I was out of my comfort zone and alittle nervous to do these interviews, soI chose the only competitor I personallyknew to conduct my first dialogue. PhilBarnes, a long-time Finger Lakes Regionmember, was participating in his 21styear at STPR ® . He has been a volunteer, driver and co-driver. This year, Barneswas co-driving—what those who do notrally would call navigating—for TonyEsposito, the only Wellsboro local in thisperformance rally. Esposito is the ownerof Tony’s Italian Cuisine in downtownWellsboro. This was Esposito’s thirdyear of rallying, and hopes to gain moreexperience, and of course, to finish therally. Being the local favorites, this teamhas a multitude of fans, proven on Day2 when this team received the loudestcheer as they pulled up to the start. The next team I interviewed waschosen by random, mainly because theyoung and pretty co –driver was standingby herself next to her car. This was ahusband and wife team, Rachelle andSamir Kaltak, of Grand Rapids, Mich. They were part of SubaRoots, a groupwho are competing in stage rallying inmemory of Matthew Nobles Marker whosadly was killed in the Olympus Rally ayear ago April. This was the Kaltaks' firstyear of performance rallying. RachelleKaltak said the SubaRoots' goal was topromote safety in the sport, in Matt’smemory. Matt’s father was the crewchief of their team.Long-term rally enthusiasts arenoticing a substantial increase in thenumber of female competitors inperformance rallying. One team of noteattracted my attention, and those ofmany others, because of the large decalon the side of the car that screamed "I[heart] Boobies.” The team of driverErica Detota, of Passaic, N.J, and AllisonHirsh, of Waldorf, Mass., are callingattention to breast cancer awareness.Erica became interested in performancerally when doing marketing for rallycompetitor Travis Hansen. After loosingher grandmother to breast cancer, shetied in advocacy for regular screening forearly detection of the disease. Erica hascompeted as a driver for three years, butthis was the first time the women havecompeted together. Hirsch said she wasfirst attracted to Detota when she sawthe side of Detota's car with its powerfulmessage. She is serving active duty inthe U.S. Air Force and was deployed toAfghanistan two weeks after this year'sevent.Nathan Usher and his brother AaronUsher, both of Mason, Mich., arerelatively new to rallying. They didcompete in STPR last year, but did notfinish. However, they placed fourth inCentral Regional Rally Championship.

FromTheir goal for this Wellsboro event was to finish and gainexperience.I was attracted to car 702, the team of Tim Oliver andSid Sareen, because of their rally mascot, Stig, the gray tigercat on a leash. Sareen, a native of India, now lives in WhitePlains, N.Y., and Oliver from Wannamasa N.J. This was thesecond event these men have competed as a team. After wishing the teams good luck, I went back rallyheadquarters at the fairgrounds, where I worked in net controlto record information for the event's various social media.STPR – view from theVIP busBy Mary HartmanThis was my third year being medic for the VIP bus.Previously I mostly was assigned to general spectator points. Ilike the bus – got a ride, got a smaller group of spectators, andlunch is included! The bus arrived at the Tioga County Fairgrounds registrationbuilding at 8:50 Saturday morning. There was some initialconfusion. Apparently different leave times were given topassengers. Most were told 9:00, while some were told 9:45.We left the registration building around 9:20 as we waited forsome latecomers. About 15 minutes later as we were headingout of Wellsboro, we were radioed to head back, as there werepeople back at the registration building. People on the bus gotupset, and some of the stage workers were anxious that theywould get there too late to set up. It was decided to head to thestage, much to the relief of those on the bus.Our first stop was stage 7. We watched the approximately60 cars go through the station, with some beeping a greeting asthey went by. Some cars slid through, some splashed the puddleon the outer edge of the corner, and some drove neatly around. At one point, we were briefly joined by a couple drivers whoseengine blew before our corner. They said there was another carnear them that slid off the road and hit a tree. After a brief stay, they returned to their car to join the sweep vehicles. We then moved on to stage 11, where we had our sandwichwraps, veggie dip, cookies, and bottled water. Things weredelayed and then word came that this leg was to be a transitto make up for lost time. Our passengers were disappointed, but accepted the decision, especially after they were told theywould get a refund. We still had a good time waving to the cars as they wentby. Many drivers waved and/or beeped back at us. History ofHow it Started and Got to Where it isThis year is the 37th running of the WasteManagement Susquehannock Trail PerformanceRally ® Presented by Citizens and NorthernBank. An event that started with the interest instage rallies in the United States and has grownto one of the major Performance Rallies in theUnited States.Rochester, New York has always been avery active area for Rallying. In the 1960’s andearly 70’s the local Rochester clubs presentedtwo annual performance night rally events, runout of Rochester, down into the Finger Lakesarea of the State. These events were part ofthe M.O.N.Y. series (Michigan, Ohio and NewYork) and were the forerunner of the stage rallyseries, as we know it today. Even though theseevents were mainly held at night on remoteroads, using a set average speed, they oftenattracted the attention of the local police and theoccasional resident. The route instructions might have indicatedan average speed of only 49 mph, but carefuladjustment of the odometer factor by the RallyMaster often boosted the actual average speedwell into the 50’s. In those days there was noseparation of transits and stages - it was morelike one big stage on open roads. To increasethe average speed even more, you had to stopat the controls, get your time, get back in thecar and continue. The perfect time for a controlwas usually on the 55 second mark, and the outtime was the top of the minute you entered, giving the driver 5 seconds to stop, turn inhis card and return to rally speed. It was oftenalmost impossible to make the required speeds, especially for the Snowblower, which was runin similar ice and snow conditions to that of theSno*Drift Rally. These events were run from 7p.m. to 7 a.m. and were around 500 miles long, with the only service a gas station about every150 miles. The last of these events to be run out ofRochester was held in 1972. While the exactreason they were discontinued is unknown, itwas probably a combination of pressure fromthe authorities, lack of insurance, and lack ofNational organization. In the next few years a conversion to stageevents was beginning to take place around thecountry. There was a desire of the Rochesterrally enthusiasts to join this conversion, buta major roadblock in New York State, werethe difficulties faced in using public roads formotorsports racing. These changes came aboutafter a spectator was killed at Watkins Glen inthe early ‘50’s, during a road race, a race runthrough the streets of the town in the day’s priorto the track being built. In 1975-6, a SCCA Finger Lakes Regionmember by the name of Bill Leathersich wasinvolved in resurrecting these performancenight rallies, along with others in the rally andsports car clubs around Rochester. When theyfound that the interest was not there, efforts wereturned to organizing a stage event. Bill foundthat Pennsylvania would allow motorsportson the great roads found in abundance in theforests just south of New York State. Bill madesome great selections in those early days, manyof the roads we use today were found by himand of course probably the most importantchoice was that of selecting Wellsboro to bethe Headquarters of the Rally. With the help ofJohn Robinson, the roads were checked out andmeasured. The maps used then were based onthose printed by Samuel A. and Helen H. Kingof DuBois, PA.Bill originally planned to have the rallyHeadquarters in Mansfield, so that he wouldnot conflict with the “Happiness is Sunshine”ProRally, which was headquartered in PotatoCity. As so often happens, destiny steppedin. On the planned date for the first STPR ® ,accommodations in Mansfield were notavailable due to a college event. Bill took hisproblem to the Finger Lakes Region SCCABoard of Directors. A Finger Lakes member,J. Robert Henderson, knew that Bill Bradshaw, long active in National SCCA affairs, lived inMansfield. Bradshaw recommended that we useWellsboro for the first event. From that startingpoint the relationship between the Finger LakesRegion and Wellsboro has grown to a pointnow where the Rally is jointly organized bytwo committees, one in Wellsboro and one inRochester. In May 1977 the first Susquehannock TrailProRally, or as it is better known today, STPR ®(Waste Management Susquehannock TrailPerformance Rally ® Presented by Citizens andNorthern Bank), was held. In those early days,it was the members of the Rochester clubs suchas, Triumph Touring Club, Corvair OwnersClub, MG Car Club, Finger Lakes Region of theSports Car Club of America and several others, that worked together to get that all importantfirst event off the ground. Bill Leathersichwas Chairman and Rallymaster, Lori Liebenwas Registrar and Bill Bell did public relations. From these beginnings, the event has grownto become one of the “Classic” PerformanceRallies in the country, winning the SCCA’s“Best ProRally” award six times, in 1983, 1988,1990, 1995, 1997, 2000 and most recently in2003. The SCCA stopped sanctioning ProRallyat the end of the 2004 season.Rally America, under the direction of J.B.Niday took on the challenge sanctioning a stagerally series. The president and owner of RallyAmerica is Doug Havir, a familiar name in theStage Rally world. The organization of theevent was taken over by Finger Lakes STPR ®Motorsports, LLC, carrying on the traditionstarted by the Sports Car Club of America andthe Finger Lakes Region, SCCA.STPR ® has seen changes over the lasteight years. The water crossing at Stony ForkCreek is no longer a part of the rally. Thenight forest stages have also gone away at therequest of the Pennsylvania Department ofConservation and Natural Resources. The lossof the night forest stages was compensated forby starting the day stages earlier in the day andadding Friday stages. Added were stages on theprivately owned Waste Management site andthe Super Special Stages on the Tioga CountyFairgrounds. The addition of the Friday stagesmade STPR ® a two day event. The year 2012 saw Rally America takenover by Bill Fogg and the addition of aRallyCross event organized by the Central NewYork Region, SCCA. The RallyCross event runon Sunday using the Super Special roads on theTioga County Fairgrounds was added in 2011.The Charity Rally, a long-time fixture of STPR ®conducted on Friday of the event weekend, wasdropped in 2013 due to the conflict with theother Friday activities. The growth of the internet, smart phonesand social media has allowed STPR ® to reachmore Performance Rally fans and to do it faster.Access has grown to include the following: Ourofficial site www.stpr.org; Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/STPRRally; Twitter:https://twitter.com/stpr_rally; Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/stpr_rally; Pinterest:http://www.pinterest.com/stpr_rally; YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/user/stprwebmaster;and Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stpr/With over a third of a century of STPR ® thecars and the teams have changed, but the spiritand the competition are still as exciting as backin the seventies.33

Rally America Championship SeriesWhat is Rallying with Rally America?Events in the Rally AmericaChampionship consist of flat-outcompetition, in any weather, onchallenging forest, mountain or desertroads. While the format is similarto that used in the WORLD RALLYCHAMPIONSHIP, the US events donot allow the cars to practice on thespecial stages. Although route booksand pace notes are used, competitorsonly see the course at legal speeds inwhat is called a “one pass recce”. Theyhave the opportunity to look at the roadsand make notes regarding the course, noting surface conditions, corner radius, ditches, stumps, etc. The use of thesame stages for several years means thatthose who have raced the event before(and can remember the course) have anadvantage. The 2013 season marks the 8thconsecutive running of the series underthe sanction of Rally America, and the37th running of the Waste ManagementSusquehannock Trail PerformanceRally ® Presented by Citizens andNorthern Bank. Stage Rallying is oneof the most exciting motorsports in theworld, with fan followings and similarchampionships presented in virtuallyevery country in the world.Stage Rallying or PerformanceRallying takes place only on “specialstages,” using demanding back roadsclosed for the event or special stagesconstructed for the rally. “Transits”connect the “special stage” sectionstogether and are driven at normalhighway speeds, with teams fullysubject to all traffic laws. Included inSTPR ® for the sixth time this year isa “super special” or a stadium stage.Although the Super Special Stage is lessthan a mile long, it gives the spectators achance on both days to see the cars overa longer distance. The Waste ManagementSusquehannock Trail PerformanceRally ® Presented by Citizens andNorthern Bank is Round 4 of the 7event 2013 Rally America NationalChampionship Series. RALLYAMERICA is the sanctioning body forthis series, which runs from the rainforests of Washington State to the loggingtrails of Maine. The Championship isnot only a contest of who is the bestdriver, but also a competition betweenthose who prepare the car and themanufacturers. The team whose car issturdily built and who can avoid damagestands a chance of winning.THE STAGE RALLY COURSEEach team is given a book ofinstructions when they register for theevent. This competitor’s route bookdescribes the course in detail withdiagrams of turns, notations of watercrossing, jumps and stage to stagetransits, etc. Pace notes are also usedgiving a more specific prediction ofthe speeds at which the curves may benegotiated in the special stages. The codriver(navigator) uses the route book, the pace notes and the recce notes aswell as local maps, odometers, and evencomputers to keep the driver on courseand on time during the transits.Special Stages are where the realcompetition takes place. The roadsare usually unpaved, logging trails, mountain roads, desert tracks and ingeneral, pretty rough roads. Not allrallies are run on unpaved roads; thereare events and stages run on asphalt(TARMAC). STPR® uses the roadsin the Pennsylvania State Forests, the private roads provided by WasteManagement and the Tioga CountyFairgrounds. Checkpoints and trafficcontrols close all “civilian” access to thestages. The cars arrive at the “ArrivalTime Control” or “ATC” and leave inone-minute intervals. They are timedagain when they reach the “Finish TimeControl” or “FTC”. The score is theamount of time used to reach the FTCfrom the ATC.Transit sections are sections of theevents in which the team travels to getfrom the finish of one stage to the startof the next stage at street legal speedsand within the time allotted. This timespecification prevents the teams fromdoing major work on the cars betweenstages. At the end of the rally, all of thestage times are added up and the fastestcar wins. That is what Stage Rallyingis all about. Although it is typical forthe fastest cars to run at the head of thepack, in the Super Special Stages theywill start slowest cars first. The leadersin each class therefore know how fastthey need to run to maintain their lead;the slower know the speed they needto drive to catch those ahead of them.THE CARSAll Performance Rally carshave safety equipment includingsafety harnesses, roll cages, andfire extinguishers. The cars are alsoequipped with special rally tires Teamswear standard race-style protective suitsand helmets. Most popular cars are smallAmerican and imported sedans suchas: Ford, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi,Saab, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen. All vehicles must be street legal withmodifications dependent on the class inwhich they run. The endurance requiredfor a Stage Rally makes it an excellentshowcase for manufacturers.A description of the classes can befound on the next page. A more completeset of specifications may be found in theRally America Performance Rally Rulesfound at www.rally-america.com.THE DRIVERSTeams start the first stage based onthe drivers Speed Factor. That factor isbased on a comparison of speeds of allcompetitors. Teams are reseeded duringthe rally based on their stage timesduring the event.35

Rally America Championship SeriesSTPR ® 2013, as the fourth of the RallyAmerica’s seven event championshipseries, can be defined as real roads, realcars, real fast. That means as fast as youcan go down closed sections of unpavedroads in cars that range from slightlymodified production to full race specialbuilt. Thee racers run from the hobbyistto the internationally known professional. And we can add real people. The ROADSThe Pennsylvania Department ofConservation and Natural Resources,Bureau of Forestry is providing almost64 miles of roads in the Susquehannock,Tioga and Tiadaghton State Forests for thespecial stages. Added to the forest roads isover 9 miles of private road on the WasteManagement site. Then there is the nearlyone mile Super Special Stage at the TiogaCounty Fairgrounds. For $5 per person, $5per car parking, you have the opportunityto sit in grandstands and watch to cars asthe run all of the stage.During STPR ® 2012 the winning caraveraged nearly 65 miles per hour. All onroads that are considered safe at 30 in thestraight sections. The CARSRally America has grouped PerformanceRally vehicles into three categories withtwo of them further broken down intoclasses. The categories are:Open category – Classes are: Open, OpenLight, Group 2 and Group 5.Open Class – The Open class allows fora tremendous amount of technicalinnovation. The cars must retain theirproduction-based appearance, butunder-the-hood, virtually anythinggoes, and all-wheel-drive is absolutelyessential.Open Light Class – This class issimilar to the Open class but mustbe normally aspirated and is limitedin displacement depending upon camlocation.Group 2 - A small displacement, twowheeldrive class that also follows the‘anything goes’ format of the Open.Supercharging or turbo chargingis not allowed; adjusted engine36Rally America atdisplacement is limited to 3.08 liters.Lighter cars must have lower enginedisplacement.Group 5 - A two-wheel drive versionof the Open class described above, following most of rules of thatclass. Engine displacement islimited to an adjusted 5.1 liters, withsupercharging and turbo chargingallowed. Vehicles must be modelssold globally in minimum quantitiesof 1000. Drive configuration mustremain as originally manufactured(front-engine, front-drive; rearengine,rear-drive; etc.).Production category – Classes are: SuperProduction, Production GT, Production andRally Truck.Super Production – “Updating” of theentire vehicle within a body style isallowed. Equipment and appearancemust match that given on the entryform. The engine displacementis limited to that specified by themanufacturer. There is no maximumdisplacement.Production GT – Modifications arelimited to safety and reliability. The body shell must display anoriginal, unmolested VIN. GT carsare more powerful and often areturbocharged. Modifications arelimited to reliability and safety. Theengine displacement is limited to thatspecified by the manufacturer.Production – Similar to ProductionGT but with an adjusted enginedisplacement limited of 2.65 liters.Rally Truck - This class allows normallyaspirated two and four wheel drivetrucks and sport utility vehicles toparticipate. They follow the samerules as the Production classes.Historic category – Groups all cars into theHistoric class.Historic Class - Historic cars must beat least 25 years old and are to beprepared to the specifications inforce at the time they were built.Modifications are required to meetcurrent safety standards.Full rules can be found on the RallyAmerica web site. How FAST?The class winning cars traveled the stageroads of STPR ® 2012 at a time and averagespeed, mph:STPR NationalOpen 1:38:15.5 64.95 mphSuper Production 1:43:30.0 61.662 Wheel Drive 1:49:46.2 58.14Finger Lakes RegionalGroup 2 0:51:26.7 53.42 mphOpen Light 0:52:12.652.63Open 0:53.28.3 51.39Super Production 0:54:55.6 50.03Group 5 0:56:55.9 48.27Production 1:02:02.1 44.3Sherwood Forest RegionalOpen 0:49:15.4 58.20 mphGroup 2 0:51:23.0 55.79Super Production 0:51:25.8 55.74Group 5 0:53:26.3 53.65Open Light 0:53:29.6 53.59Production 0:56:54.0 50.38A radar gun has been used to measurethe speed of the cars on a straight section ofa stage. Rally America Championship Series2013RallyAmerica Championship Season SummaryL’ESTAGE AND RICHARD WINRALLY AMERICA SEASONOPENER SNO*DRIFT RALLYWilliston, VT (January 28, 2013) -- RockstarEnergy Drink Team’s Antoine L’Estage and co-driverNathalie Richard completed a stunning come–frombehindvictory at the Sno*Drift Rally held January25-26th in Lewiston, Michigan.Snow and ice often create large gaps betweenrally cars at Sno*Drift, however, L’Estage andRichard were locked in a fierce battle with SubaruRally Team USA’s David Higgins and Craig Drewwhich turned into a classic battle between Mitsubishiand Subaru. Higgins and L’Estage swapped the leadtwice on Friday with Higgins leading the first fourstages, then L’Estage took the lead through stage 7,and Higgins gained an overnight lead of .5 secondson the final stage of the first day. Higgins retainedthat lead all through the second day of Sno*Driftleading by as little as .4 seconds after stage 12 and asmuch as 21.3 seconds after stage 18. L’Estage tookback 19.9 seconds on the penultimate stage settingup an epic finale! With 6 miles of slippery roads togo, both drivers gave it all they had. L’Estage wonthe stage by 7.6 seconds for a final margin of victoryof 6.2 seconds over Higgins.Can-Jam Motorsports’ Leonid Urlichich andCarl Williamson completed the overall podium inthird place. It was a great start to the team’s secondseason of rally on American soil.Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsominoreturned to contend the full Rally America NationalChampionship after several seasons honing theirskills in the WRC. Block was considered by many tobe the man to beat after winning two Rally Americaappearances in 2012. However, early electricalproblem sidelined the team after the second stage.Block was the first to benefit from new for 2013“Super Rally” rules and resumed competition at thebeginning of the second day hamstrung with penaltytimes for the six stages he missed on Friday. TheHoonigan Racing team won six of the second day’stwelve stages. In the Super Production (SP) Class, ExedyRacing Clutches’ Evan Cline and co-driver JakeBlattner drove a very smooth race to take their veryfirst class win. The pair led SP from the start andfinished ahead of Mason Moyle and John Hall. Clineand Blattner also won Friday’s Sno Regional Rallyin the process.Moyle and Hall were also locked in a seriousbattle with Rally America newcomers Nick Robertsand Nick Judkins. Roberts built up a day one leadover Moyle of 1:29.1, but Moyle dogged Robertsall day Saturday until he overtook Roberts on stage17 and held onto second place to the end.The Scion Racing Rally xD team of AndrewComrie-Picard and Jeremy Wimpey began theirseason strong with a Two-Wheel Drive Class winover Ford Fiesta driver Dillon Van Way and AndrewEdwards. The Scion Racing team was last year’s2WD Class runners up and appears to be the teamto beat this year. The Sno*Drift Rally has been verygood to Dillon Van Way. This year’s second placefinish now marks five consecutive Sno*Drift Rallypodium finishes, which includes a 2WD Class winin 2011. 2011 Rally America Rookie of year EdMcNelly and Ole Holter from driving the TeamO’Neil Rally School Ford Fiesta took third placefor his first Sno*Drift podium.HIGGINS AND DREW CLAIMFIRST RALLY IN THE 100ACRE WOOD VICTORYSalem, MO (February 24, 2013) -- The suddenarrival of winter ice and snow conditions could notprevent Subaru Rally Team USA’s David Higginsand Craig Drew from winning the Rally in the 100Acre Wood held on February 22-23rd in Salem,Missouri. The hard fought victory gave Higgins hisfirst 100 Acre Wood Rally victory in three attemptsat one of the more slippery events in recent memory. On the first day Higgins and Drew fell behindearly to Hoonigan Racing’s Ken Block and AlexGelsomino and to Rockstar Energy Drink RallyTeam’s Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard untila fateful stage 6, the first nighttime stage. Blocksuffered frontend damage and L’Estage retired fromthe event with overheating issues that left Higginswith the overall lead.Block rejoined the event at the beginning of thesecond day using SuperRally rules, which allows ateam to reenter with time penalties, only to retireagain from the event with an electrical throttleproblem on stage 10. Block held a psychologicaladvantage having previously won six 100 AcreWood Rallys – the most by any Rally America driver.Higgins then commanded a six minute lead overJoseph Burk and Alex Kihurani in second place andLauchlin O’Sullivan and Scott Putnam in third place.Higgins won 9 of the last 10 stages of the day towardshis overall victory.Higgins is the reigning 2012 Rally AmericaNational Championship. With this win Higginsassumes the Championship lead on route todefending his title.Joseph Burke and Alex Kihurani piloted their2006 Mitsubishi EVO IX to second place for theirfirst Rally in the 100 Acre Wood podium. Burke lastcompeted in September 2012 when he severely rolledhis car and had to rebuild in the offseason. The newrally car kept pace with the top of the field even whenhis car experienced electrical problems.Lauchlin O’Sullivan and Scott Putnam alsoput a newly minted Super Production (SP) Class2008 Subaru WRX STI through the paces and wereextremely pleased to not only take third overall, butto win the SP Class. O’Sullivan and Putnam are the2012 Super Production Champions and returned thisseason at 100 Acre Wood to defend their title aftermissing the first event of the year.2013 Sno*Drift Rally SP Class winners, EvanCline and Jake Blattner, patiently drove a consistentrace and overtook David Sterckx and KarenJankowski on stage 15 to place second in class, andin the process maintained their SP Class points lead.Sterckx lost considerable speed because of turboboost problems and took the third place spot for theirfirst podium this season.Scion Racing Rally xD’s Andrew Comrie-Picardand Jeremy Wimpey took the Two-Wheel Drive(2WD) Class victory; their second consecutiveclass win, in a tight battle with a contingent of FordFiestas. Comrie-Picard was locked in a battle withDillon Van Way and Andrew Edwards until stage11 when Van Way crashed and gave up his secondplace position to fellow Ford Fiesta drivers, EdwardMcNelly and Ole Holter.Long-time rally racers Tim O’Neil and TravisHanson completed the 2WD podium. O’Neil is thefounder of the Team O’Neil Rally School in Dalton,NH which trained many of the drivers competing inRally America competition.SUBARU RALLY TEAM USAEXTENDS CHAMPIONSHIP LEADWITH OREGON TRAIL RALLY WINThe British duo, David Higgins and co-driverCraig Drew, never relinquished their lead fromthe start and drove a masterful race to establisha 2 minute window over their competition andenough breathing room to drive the last day withoutdifficulty. However, the team nearly ended theirevent when Higgins struck exposed bedrock at highspeeds that tore through their Subaru Impreza WRXSTI suspension on stage 16. Higgins gingerly drovethrough the last stage of the day as the car severelypulled to one side and just made it back to servicefor repairs.Hoonigan Racing’s Ken Block and AlexGelsomino persevered through multiple mechanicaldifficulties to salvage second place in their 2012Ford Fiesta. The team fell behind early when theylost a wheel on stage 3, suffered a driveshaft failureon stage 5 and more tire punctures throughout thesecond day. Block also impacted the same exposedbedrock that Higgins hit and managed to get the carback to service without overheating the car. Blockreadjusted to win every stage on Sunday but couldnot make up time on Higgins’ substantial lead.Indonesia’s Rifat Sungkar amazingly completedthe podium in third place in his Rally America debutwith co-driver Marshall Clarke. Clarke having racedin the states previously provided Sungkar witha quick education in American racing. Sungkarsurvived two nearly catastrophic incidents when heimpacted a stage 2 guardrail and went off courseon stage 17.37

Rally America Championship SeriesDisappointedly, top Rally America contenders Antoine L’Estage and NathalieRichard from the Rockstar Energy Rally Team crashed hard on stage 9 whenL’Estage misheard a navigation note and launched off the road into a tree.In the Super Production (SP) Class David Sterckx and Karen Jankowskireinserted themselves into class contention with an SP victory. The pair ledthe event from the start despite experiencing engine problems that could haveprevented the team from even starting. However, Sterckx placed blistering timesfrom the very beginning and built a 4 minute lead to stand on his second SPpodium of the year.Dave Henderson with co-driver Terrence McDowell fought a furious battleof seconds with 2012 Super Production Class Champions, Lauchlin O’Sullivanand Scott Putnam for second place. Henderson overtook O’Sullivan on stage15, and O’Sullivan suffered a massive rollover on stage 16.Ford Fiesta drivers finally broke the stranglehold that Scion Racing RallyxD’s Andrew Comrie-Picard and Jeremy Wimpey held in the Two-Wheel Drive(2WD) category this season by taking two 2WD podium spots.Australian newcomers Brendan Reeves and Rhianon Smyth impressed bydriving their 2012 Ford Fiesta R2 to a 5th overall placement and winning the2WD category in their first American race. Reeves and Smyth’s have previousWRC Academy experience and proved that 2WD drivetrains can crack the topfive amidst other cars with twice the horsepower.Fellow Ford Fiesta drivers Dillon Van Way and Andrew Edwards drovea relatively problem free race and held third place for much of the event untilComrie-Picard experienced overheating issues on the last stage. Comrie-Picardlost significant power and ceded second place to Van Way. The Scion team hadto be towed into the final controls by three different teams to finish the eventand take third place in class.Van Way and Edwards now have two second place finishes this year andComrie-Picard’s third place finish helps to keep his 2WD points lead in thestandings. Notably, Edward McNelly and Ole Holter were not able to finish theOregon Trail Rally when they went off-course on stage 5.The Oregon Trail Rally saw the largest entries of the year with 74 cars. Dueto the fast and rough stages 31 cars were not able to finish the event, thoughsome were able to reenter using SuperRally rules in national competition andsome teams reentered for the following regional rally.Rally America2013 National Championship SeriesSno*Drift Rally...........................................Jan. 25-26Atlanta, MI Antoine L'Estage/Nathalie RichardRally in the 100 Acre Wood.......................
