LEARNER-DRIVEN ONLINE LEARNING<br />

Our online learning process allows you <strong>to</strong> choose where and when you wish <strong>to</strong> study at the time and place <strong>to</strong> suit<br />

you. Each course or unit is designed <strong>to</strong> be completed part-time over a number of weeks, but flexibility is built-in<br />

allowing you <strong>to</strong> control the pace at which you complete the programme. Based on experiential learning it allows<br />

you <strong>to</strong> build on your existing knowledge <strong>to</strong> develop new skills.<br />

The Student can work in<strong>to</strong> their study times periods of holiday, increased work load or other times when study<br />

may need <strong>to</strong> take a ‘back seat’ and catch up <strong>with</strong> work in their own time. <strong>You</strong> are not bound <strong>to</strong> a traditional<br />

academic calendar – we work around you and your life.<br />

STUDENT SUPPORT<br />

If a Student has an issue, query or concern <strong>with</strong> the<br />

course that is not strictly training-based, they can contact<br />

Student Support. Student Support is available Monday-<br />

Friday 8.00-17.00 and our dedicated staff are always<br />

available <strong>to</strong> help during these hours.<br />

TUTOR SUPPORT<br />

The Tu<strong>to</strong>rs at LLA have a wide breadth of knowledge and experience in all fields of<br />

management in the logistics and supply chain environment. Their knowledge is not<br />

simply learned from books and exams; it is from years of hands-on experience,<br />

underpinned by their own in depth training of current best-practice solutions for all<br />

aspects of the logistics and supply chain.<br />

If at any time you feel you need help or advice either on the course content or the<br />

questions being asked, please let us know. Strong Tu<strong>to</strong>ring support is built in<strong>to</strong> all

THE LEARNING PROCESS<br />

The learning process incorporates our case study SCILworld. The case study is a broad but intensive exploration<br />

of a fictitious company: SCIL plc. It is a simulated but highly realistic scenario, that allows you <strong>to</strong> explore concepts<br />

and ideas in a risk-free environment.<br />

For the purposes of the study programme, learners are ‘recruited’ by SCIL plc and appointed <strong>to</strong> a position relating<br />

<strong>to</strong> their choice of qualification or skills building course. They will perform the tasks required of that role that<br />

demonstrate the necessary competence. This is learning by challenging and doing.<br />

The new ‘employee’ will receive access <strong>to</strong> our online<br />

case study and learning materials, which will contain:<br />

A virtual introduc<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong>ur of SCIL plc<br />

Access <strong>to</strong> detailed statistical and<br />

information about SCIL, Air-Flo & Bi-Flo<br />

product<br />

Access <strong>to</strong> the Centre of Excellence which will<br />

provide all relevant technical information smd<br />

learning materials enabling the learner <strong>to</strong><br />

submit work <strong>to</strong> the required standard<br />

Access <strong>to</strong> details of all relevant legislation<br />

which may have an impact on the business<br />

THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS<br />

Work-based projects and assignments based on the case-study simulation have been created <strong>to</strong> enable Students<br />

<strong>to</strong> demonstrate their ability <strong>to</strong> apply the knowledge gained.<br />

The assigned, specialist Tu<strong>to</strong>r is also the Student’s Assessor, who will work <strong>with</strong> the Student <strong>to</strong> provide the<br />

evidence <strong>to</strong> satisfy:<br />

All of the performance criteria<br />

All aspects of the qualification<br />

All of the knowledge requirements of the chosen learning programme


COMPETENCY<br />

In each unit, Students will be issued a series of tasks designed <strong>to</strong> enable them <strong>to</strong> demonstrate their<br />

competence in the relevant subject area. Using the simulation scenario, the line manager will set<br />

tasks designed <strong>to</strong> enable the Student <strong>to</strong> demonstrate their underlying knowledge and<br />

understanding.<br />

Students will show and justify how, based on their own experience, knowledge given through the<br />

Centre of Excellence and understanding, they would respond <strong>to</strong> the challenge set. The method is<br />

enjoyable, practical and a genuine fast-track route <strong>to</strong> an internationally recognised qualification, or<br />

<strong>to</strong> build upon and create new skills, and challenging current practices.<br />

SUMMARY<br />

One of the difficulties many Students have at the<br />

start of their learning programmes is making the<br />

adjustment <strong>to</strong> a system where competence is<br />

assessed rather than knowledge being examined.<br />

For competence assessment, the Tu<strong>to</strong>r is trying <strong>to</strong><br />

find out not just how much the Student knows, but<br />

if the knowledge is sufficiently unders<strong>to</strong>od for it <strong>to</strong><br />

be applied in real life. <strong>You</strong>r Tu<strong>to</strong>r will use a<br />

combination of directive and supportive behaviour<br />

<strong>to</strong> guide you through this process.<br />
