LDAlouisiana state board of dentistryDr. Romell J. MadisonPresident, LSBDA Message from the LSBD PresidentAs this is my first article for the LDA Journal, letme introduce myself. My name is Dr. Romell J.Madison. I have been a pharmacist and a practicingdentist in New Orleans for over 26 years. I have twooffices, one on the West Bank and one in Gentilly. Ihave enjoyed the profession of dentistry all of theseyears and have always been active in organizeddentistry. I am a past president of the NationalDental Association. I have been happily married tomy wonderful wife, Grace, for 35 years and we havetwo children, Leslie and Jarrod.I am in my second term as a member of the LSBD.I am proud to be serving as president and will do mybest to foster a working and cordial relationship withthe LDA and the LSUSD. It is in all our best intereststo be working in a cohesive and cooperative manner.Serving on the board has been quite an experiencefor me. I have worked in many areas of the boardsuch as the Rulemaking Committee, ExaminationCommittee, Continuing Education Committee,Anesthesia Committee, as well as the Licensing andCredentials Committee. So I believe that I have apretty good handle on what our board does. Youwould be amazed at the amount of work whichour board members must share. This is not a boardwhere one can profit financially or in any other likemanner. The only profit we receive is knowing thatwe have given something back to the profession andwe have done our best to protect the health, safetyand welfare of our patients.It seems that every year there is some newcontroversy or problem attacking dentistry. Atpresent, I see the coming of the mid-level practitioneras a growing problem in our country. I have seenhow the only state which allows dental hygienists tomaintain an individual private practice is Colorado.There are presently 19 of those practices in the stateof Colorado. However, all but one are in urban areas.Only one is located in a rural area which was theintention in the beginning to bring resources to thoserural areas. Seems like a failure to me.I believe the same will happen with mid-levelpractitioners. There will be a few out in the ruralareas, and most will continue to practice in theurban areas where there are more clients in closerproximity. This is going to seriously undermine thesafety of our patients and we must be united whenthis controversy comes to Louisiana, and it will comesooner than you think.In other news, I am very happy to report that ourlast renewal cycle has already been completed weeksin advance. This was the first time we renewedlicenses online and it was a tremendous success.We are also in the process of scanning literallythousands and thousands of documents so that wecan go paperless in the future.As many of you may know, all state agenciesin the New Orleans area were ordered by theDivision of Administration to move into BensonTower last year. We fought the move because theprice per square foot was much higher than weare paying at our present location. We determinedthat we have saved over $500,000 over the courseof our present lease. We hope you will see that weare doing our best to keep our costs down whilecontinuing to do our job.We are in several court cases right now and ourlitigation expenses have grown tremendously.LSBD Executive Director C. Barry Ogden, ESQ.will be retiring at the end of October 2011. We arepresently in the process of seeking his replacement.The decision on his successor is very importantand we promise we will do our best to keep ouroperations running as smoothly as possible.I look forward to communicating with youmore in the future and wish each of you a verysuccessful year.24 LDA Journal
