LDAnewsSetting the Standard in Orofacial Pain CareDr. Henry Gremillionhas been appointed bythe American Academyof Orofacial Pain (AAOP)to serve on the American<strong>Dental</strong> <strong>Association</strong> (ADA)committee that sets thestandards for the teachingof orofacial pain in the58 dental schools inthe United States. Dr.Gremillion’s appointmentis for four years.The committee iscomprised of 12 members who make consensusrecommendations on policy, standards revisions,and accreditation status reports specific topostdoctoral general dentistry education. Thedisciplines represented on the committee aregeneral practice residency, advanced education ingeneral dentistry and advanced general dentistryeducation in dental anesthesiology, oral medicine andorofacial pain. In addition, the committee also hasa public representative, a higher education/hospitaladministration representative and a specialty dentistrepresentative.In 2008, Dr. Gremillion also served on an adhoc committee of the commission to developaccreditation standards for advanced general dentistryeducation programs in orofacial pain.Hienz Joins Periodontics FacultyStefan A. Hienz,D.M.D., Ph.D., hasbeen appointedassistant professor inthe Department ofPeriodontics at the LSUSchool of Dentistry.A native of Munich,Germany, Dr. Hienzreceived his doctoratein microbiology fromthe Karolinska Institutetin Stockholm, Sweden. In 1998, he receivedhis D.M.D. from the Harvard School of <strong>Dental</strong>Medicine. In 2001, he completed his residency inperiodontics at the University of California at LosAngeles School of Dentistry.While at Harvard, he received the PierreFauchard Academy award for outstanding academicachievements in dentistry. As a member of the facultyat <strong>Be</strong>rnhard Gottlieb <strong>Dental</strong> Clinic/Medical Universityin Vienna, Austria, he was co-director of the postgraduate program in periodontics. He also performedlive surgeries that were televised during national andinternational professional meetings.Since 1995, Dr. Hienz has co-authored 11 articlesin scientific journals.The announcement of Dr. Hienz’s appointmentwas made by Dr. Gerald Evans, interim chairmanof the Department of Periodontics. “In addition toover nine years of clinical experience, Dr. Hienzhas had excellent dental school and postgraduatetraining in the United States,” said Dr. Evans.“His qualifications and experience will be valuablecontributions to our department.”Crawford-Kendall Joins Pediatric DentistryDr. RosalynnCrawford-McKendallhas been appointedassistant professor in theDepartment of PediatricDentistry at the LSUSchool of Dentistry.Dr. Crawford-McKendall, a nativeof Boligee, Alabama,graduated magna cumlaude in 1994 fromJackson State Universityin Jackson, Mississippi, with a bachelor of science inbiology. In 1998 she received her D.D.S. from NewYork University (NYU) College of Dentistry. Shereceived a general practice residency certificate twoyears later from Bronx Lebanon Hospital and completedcertification in pediatric dentistry from NYU in 2005.Prior to coming to LSUSD, she was a clinicalassistant professor in the Pediatric Dentistry36 LDA Journal
