MICROFLOW-RADIO-HPLC
Mira Star flow detector
and electronics
Micro Ramona Star is a newly
d e v e l o p e d r a d i o a c t i v i t y
flowthrough detector for the
application of microflow or capillary
HPLC.
Mira Star consists of a separate
detector unit and an electronic
module to position the detector as
close as possible to the µ-HPLC
system to reduce peak broadening
by long capillaries between the
individual HPLC components.
Mira Star and a microflow-
HPLC-system
4 DETECTOR S
IN 1
Mira Star has 4 separate
coincidence flow detectors aligned
in series in one detector. Every
single separate subdetector
counts the flowthrough activity
profile in the small cell volume. At
the end, all 4 profiles are
s e q u e n t i a l l y d e l a y e d ,
accumulated in phase and added
to one peak profile. Therefore the
sensitivity is 4 times higher than 1
flowdetector.
Flow rates in microflow HPLC are
typically in the range of 10-100
µl/min. Typically µ-flow HPLC
columns have internal diameters of
less than 1 mm. The separation
performance of these columns is
equal or even higher than standard
HPLC columns. The consumption
of eluents is for µ-HPLC
applications much lower than in
standard HPLC. And therefore the
disposal of contaminated eluent
waste is less laborous and less
expensive.
Small column diameter means
small sample volume injection for
separation.
Small sample volume means that
separated fractions in HPLC have
a very small peak volume.
Small peak volume produce small
activity peaks (small numbers of
counts detected).
To obtain sufficient sensitivity for
these small numbers of counts it
was required to mount four
separate subdetectors in series.
VERSA TILE APPLICATIONS Mira Star internal
solid scintillator cell
Mira Star can be equipped with
various flowcells with solid
scintillators for almost every
application. Scintillator materials
are CaF and Li-glass as well as a
new scintillator material, called US.
The different solid scintillator cells
are available in various volumes
and many grades of particle size
to optimize sensitivity and
resolution.

FLEXI BLE USE
Mira Star external
solid scintillator cell
Mira Star also can be equipped
with flowcells with external solid
scintillators. A coil of PTFE-tubing
is positioned between 2 solid
scintillator disks. The radiation
penetrates the wall of the tubing
and hits the external scintillator
disk. Such an arrangement is
suitable for high energy beta
applications with plastic scintillator
material or low energy gamma
applications with BGO-scintillator
disks. The cell volume can be
customized to the required size.
LIQUID SCINTILLATOR ADMIXTURE
Mira Star liquid scintillator cell
Mira Star is suitable for liquid
scintillator admixture using liquid
scintillator cells and the Ramona
HPLC-LS pump with a delivery
rate of 100-2000 µl/min. Capillary
tubing and small flowcell volume
require low viscosity liquid
s c i n t i l l a t o r c o c k t a i l s . B i o -
degradable LS-cocktails are
preferred.
Mira Star LS-admixture pump
GLP A ND GMP COMPLIANCE Mira Star flow cell identification
Mira Star flow cells have the same
unique cell recognition feature as
Ramona Star. Every flowcell
carries a readable microchip,
storing the individual identification
and all parameters required for
GLP and GMP compliance. Data
f r o m t h i s m i c r o c h i p a r e
automatically transferred to Gina
Star software.
Mira Star can easily be integrated
into a microflow HPLC-system,
