KINGS IN THE COMMUNITYThe Los Angles Kings are <strong>com</strong>mitted to making a positive difference in the Los Angeles <strong>com</strong>munityand actively seek opportunities to serve as ambassadors of good will. Through thecreation of diverse educational, recreational and social development programs, in addition tohosting special events, donating in-kind items and granting requests for monetary funding,the Los Angeles Kings are delighted to touch the lives of nearly one million children eachyear.The following are just a few examples of the many ways the Los Angeles Kings are giving backto its <strong>com</strong>munity.GIVING THE ROYAL TREATMENTKings Street Knights is a grassroots hockey program that can be organized at youth-basededucational or recreational centers in Greater Los Angeles. By donating full sets of streethockey equipment and expert instruction, this program gives <strong>com</strong>munity centers an opportunityto operate their own youth hockey program. New sites can be developed at any timeand the program can be adapted to include youth who are audibly, visually, developmentallyor physically challenged. For more information please call the Kings Fan DevelopmentDepartment at (213) 742-7206.Hockey is for Everyone is a series of hockeyclinics that are designed to connect youth tohockey by offering clinics in underserved<strong>com</strong>munities in Los Angeles County. TheKings expert hockey instructors bring aninflatable slap-shot booth and a portablehockey rink to teach hockey basics. Youthparticipants perform hockey drills that <strong>cover</strong>the fundamentals of street hockey includingshooting, passing and scoring. This programalso includes youth who are audibly, visually,Lubomir Visnovsky greets kids before a gamedevelopmentally or physically challenged.Hockey Fights Cancer demonstrates this team’s <strong>com</strong>mitment to finding a cure for cancer andassisting those affected by the disease. Through various activities, such as building a teenlounge for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles,donating proceeds raised from the Kings 5K Fun Run to a cancer organization, partnering withthe Wellness Community-West Los Angeles for the Revlon Run Walk or working with theLeukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Los Angeles Kings will continue to support this causethrough multiple efforts throughout the year.Fit to be King is an online and interactive fitness and nutrition curriculum developed inresponse to the alarming increase in childhood obesity and its associated health problems.Fit to be King encourages youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, utilizing hockey to emphasizegood nutrition and exercise habits.Adoption is An Option is an outreach initiativedesigned to increase permanentadoption and raise awareness about adoptionand foster care. Efforts to championthis cause include hosting multiple childrenfrom FOX-11’s “Wednesday’s Child,” whichhighlights foster children available for adoptionon the news.The Kings Chariot continues to bring hockeyto schools, youth centers and <strong>com</strong>munityfestivals throughout Los Angeles. Free ofcharge, the Chariot is run by skilled hockey Annual Jund Scholarship Winnerinstructors and is equipped with an inflatable slap-shot booth and Kings jerseys, a portablehockey rink and full sets of hockey gear to transform any site into a hockey extravaganza. The Kings recognize the need of additional support during the holidays andare <strong>com</strong>mitted to several annual events during the winter months that benefit both childrenand families in the downtown area. Each year, the Kings host a Food and Toy Drive that benefitsChildrens Hospital Los Angeles as well as a myriad of local organizations such as The LosAngeles Regional Food Bank, The Midnight Mission, Pico Union Housing Corporation, Plaza dela Raza and Central City Action Committee. Every holiday season, the Kings coaches, players,personnel and their families also participate in the annual Adopt-a-Family Gift GivingProgram, a wonderful yearly event, which provides gifts and groceries to families who livenear STAPLES Center.Kings Camp is a one week ice hockey campfor children (ages 5-15) of all skill levels.The camp, which has just <strong>com</strong>pleted its 16 thyear, is held at the Los Angeles Kings practicefacility, the Toyota Sports Center in ElSegundo, California. The camp runs for oneweek in August, with daily sessions goingfrom 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sessions include twoand a half hours of on ice instruction andone hour of video instruction. The camp ismanaged by an All-Star staff of Kings alumni,personnel, and other professional hockeyRob Blake at Kings Youth Hockey Campinstructors who are assembled by HeadInstructor Daryl Evans, a former Kings playerand the current Kings Radio Color Commentator. This year, the Kings offered multiple scholarshipsto inner-city youth and exposed them to the sport of Kings. The Kings Care Foundation granted $250,000 to develop a stateof-the-artLos Angeles Childrens Museum at Hansen Dam and pledged $250,000 to the NeilBogart Memorial Fund, a non-profit organization that funds research at Childrens Hospital LosAngeles to find a cure for pediatric cancer, leukemia and AIDS. The Kings Care Foundationalso proudly supports National Hockey League initiatives such as Hockey Fights Cancer andour own Luc Robitaille’s Shelter for Serenity, a non-profit he and his wife Stacia founded toassist victims of hurricane Katrina.
