Wellness Skull
Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout’s works explore the interface of art, architecture, design and hedonism. He
designs entire cities, including their functions, and develops objects and installations. His work deals with
housing, catering, waste management, transportation and procreation. In the context of East of Eden. A
Garden Show, Zentrum Paul Klee presents his oversize skull – 4.5 m tall and 6 m in diameter – that contains
a wellness centre. In the neck of the skull is a small bath. The head of the Skull contains a sauna. When it is
working, hot steam pours out of its eye sockets. The Wellness Skull stands for pleasure and health, vanity and
decadence. The piece refers to dying and decadence; it symbolises death, belief in the hereafter, and the end of
life.
