Our goal is thatour taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing)will flourish through <strong>the</strong> passionand energy we have to preserveand streng<strong>the</strong>n our culture.Cultural Revival<strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong> culture andtraditions help to define whowe are and where we havecome from as a people. <strong>Ngāi</strong><strong>Tahu</strong>tanga is our inheritedcommon identity, it guidesus in all our decisions andunderpins everything TeRūnanga sets out to achieve.Our whakapapa, language,tikanga (customs), our waysof life and our relationshipwith <strong>the</strong> land and seadistinguish our historiesas <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn-most iwiof Aotearoa.Protecting and enhancing<strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong> culture is essentialto maintaining <strong>the</strong> life-forceand integrity of <strong>the</strong> tribe.Te Rūnanga firmly believes thatwith an individual’s culturalstrength comes <strong>the</strong> growth of<strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong> communities andwith it a sense of identity andpride – important buildingblocks for <strong>the</strong> continueddevelopment of our people ascontributors to <strong>the</strong> cultural,social, environmental andeconomic diversity of TeWaipounamu and Aotearoa.At <strong>the</strong> forefront of culturalrevitalisation is <strong>the</strong> tribalte reo Māori languagestrategy Kotahi Mano Kāika,meaning, one thousandhomes, one thousandaspirations. Partnering ourte reo programme is <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ngāi</strong><strong>Tahu</strong> Fund, which aims tostreng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong> culturalexcellence. Annually, upto $1m is made availableto directly fund <strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong>whānau to learn and share incultural practices, whakapapaand te reo. Te Rūnanga hascommitted $1m each year to<strong>the</strong> Marae Development Fundto assist with large capitalworks projects and smallermaintenance related activitieson <strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong> Papatipu Marae.Te Rūnanga has alsodeveloped <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong>Cultural Strategy, ManawaWhenua, Manawa Reo,Manawa Kāi <strong>Tahu</strong> (Our World,Our Word, Our Way). It setsout a pathway to createsuccessive generations ofstrong, vibrant championsof our culture. It guides ourcultural investment andfocus and prioritises fiveoutcome areas; leadership;resources; growth of practicesthrough intergenerationalownership; engagement,value, celebration, protectionand au<strong>the</strong>nticity and lastlysupporting new forms ofcultural expression.There are many challengesfacing <strong>the</strong> health of ourculture, but as an iwi we arewell placed to ensure <strong>the</strong>rewill be long term gains tocreate a vibrant, healthy,prosperous <strong>Ngāi</strong> <strong>Tahu</strong> culture,for our children and <strong>the</strong>irchildren after <strong>the</strong>m.26 27
