The goal is tobuild healthy relationships withgovernment, private and communitysectors, to share responsibilityfor delivering mutually beneficialoutcomes.Tribal Influenceand RelationshipsThe Treaty of Waitangiis the foundation ofan intergenerationalrelationship between NgāiTahu and the Crown. Likea marriage, there havebeen rocky periods in thepartnership, but the NgāiTahu Settlement was animportant transition point toa new era of co-operation.Te Rūnanga representsNgāi Tahu Whānui in theTreaty relationship with theCrown. While we have aresponsibility to protect therights and interests of ourpeople, our philosophy is towork in collaboration withgovernment, private andcommunity sectors towardsshared outcomes that are inthe tribal, community andnational interest. In NgāiTahu traditions, the purposeof possessing rights is to havethe ability to be responsible,to people and place.Te Rūnanga engages withthe Crown, other iwi andthe private and communitysectors under the umbrellaof an external relationsportfolio. Our priorities areto uphold the integrity ofour Settlement to protect ourtribal territory.Ngāi Tahu were the first iwito complete a comprehensivecultural and commercialTreaty settlement. Wesuccessfully engaged withthe United Nations, obtaininga pivotal finding on the2004 foreshore and seabedreform, and broke new groundpartnering commercially withcentral and local government.Ngāi Tahu is also a foundingmember of the Iwi ChairsForum, a collective leadershipbody working in partnershipwith the Crown on a widerange of matters of nationalinterest including climatechange, co-investing withthe Crown in infrastructure,the foreshore and seabed,Whānau Ora, constitutionalchange and freshwater.Following the 2010/2011Christchurch earthquakes,Te Rūnanga led a recoverynetwork that reached 10,000whānau of all ethnicities inthe worst affected suburbs.We delivered food, water,provided transport to healthcare and linked people withgovernment and NGO supportservices. Our marae hostedthose in need and we trulycame together as an iwi to beresponsible for the well-beingof the people in our takiwā.Ngāi Tahu will always beforthright advocates forour interests and activeparticipants in matters ofnational importance. Ourcharacter however, is infusedwith a healthy balance ofprinciple, pragmatism anda long term horizon forseeking what we considermost precious. There arebottom lines that we willdefend passionately, but wehave a growing record ofaccomplishments reached inpartnership with governmentthat contribute equally to thetribal and national interest.60 61
