InductionsAll employees working <strong>at</strong> a <strong>Leighton</strong><strong>Contractors</strong>’ workplace will undertakesome form of induction. The inductionwill vary depending on role <strong>and</strong> loc<strong>at</strong>ion,<strong>and</strong> include the Group induction,branch inductions, project inductions<strong>and</strong> visitor inductions.Technical CompetencyThis covers employees working in highrisk activities, such as plant oper<strong>at</strong>ions,working <strong>at</strong> heights, confined spaces <strong>and</strong>other areas, required to demonstr<strong>at</strong>especific competencies to work safely <strong>and</strong>to comply with legisl<strong>at</strong>ive requirements.Evidence of competency is generallyobtained after an assessment by arecognised trainer/ assessor. Once onsite, the verific<strong>at</strong>ion of competenciesmay also be undertaken to comply withlegisl<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>and</strong> client/site requirements.Essentials Risk AwarenessEmployees supervising high riskactivities have the required competencyto manage the work safely <strong>and</strong> to complywith legisl<strong>at</strong>ive requirements.<strong>Safety</strong> Found<strong>at</strong>ion ProgramThe <strong>Safety</strong> Found<strong>at</strong>ion programprovides the Divisional specific trainingfor managers in rel<strong>at</strong>ion to systemimplement<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> basic leadership.To ensure th<strong>at</strong> a consistent approach istaken to the way SH is managed acrossthe company, the <strong>Safety</strong> Found<strong>at</strong>ionProgram should be undertaken byall leaders, from engineer/supervisorupwards, as the initial safety course.The objective of these n<strong>at</strong>ionallyaccredited programs is to ensure th<strong>at</strong>all supervisors can demonstr<strong>at</strong>e therequired competencies to system<strong>at</strong>icallymanage their teams to work safely,through leadership, planning,implement<strong>at</strong>ion, measurement <strong>and</strong>evalu<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>and</strong> management review.These n<strong>at</strong>ionally accredited programsprovide the opportunity to learn how touse the <strong>Leighton</strong> Management System,as detailed on Our Way, to manageSH. A series of courses will cover thecore competencies required <strong>at</strong> variousleadership levels.SH ProfessionalsA specific program will also bedeveloped for safety professionals toensure th<strong>at</strong> our <strong>Safety</strong> Managers <strong>and</strong>Advisors have the required underpinningknowledge of the systems used by<strong>Leighton</strong> <strong>Contractors</strong>, to support theiroper<strong>at</strong>ions.Leadership <strong>and</strong> managementTo ensure th<strong>at</strong> all our managers havethe required competencies to lead,communic<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> manage their teams,a range of leadership programs arebeing developed.The <strong>Leighton</strong> <strong>Contractors</strong>’ LeadershipDevelopment Framework has beenrunning successfully for some time <strong>and</strong>will continue to support our safety <strong>and</strong>health approach.<strong>Safety</strong> Leadership ProgramPrograms have been developedfor all safety critical employees <strong>and</strong>subcontractors ranging from leadingh<strong>and</strong> through to senior managers.23
