CurriculumThe comparative report of Key Stage 1 and 2 Teachers’ Asssessments can be seen inAppendix A and B. Last year we decided to concentrate on raising standards in Welshwriting throughout the school and especially in Year 6. The county’s Welsh advisoryteacher, Mrs Eirlys Eckley, worked closely with the school throughout the year andmoderated the Year 6 children’s work regularly with the Year 6 teacher and the Welshsubject leader. This was very beneficial as the % of level 5 raised from 0% to 23.1%,level 4+ increased from 71% to 84.6%and the core subject indicator from 70.59% to80.8%.We will be concentrating this year on raising standards in Mathematics in KS1 and 2,especially in Shape and Space, and Physical Processes within the Science curriculum.Curriculum 2008Curriculum 2008 is now being implemented in KS2 and during last year the teachersworked hard to prepare for the changes due to the change in some of the subjectorders and the introduction of the Skills Framework incorporating ICT,Communication, Numeracy and Thinking skills into the schemes of work. As part ofthis preparation we welcomed the Happy Puzzle Company to the school for a day’sworkshop with the children and staff, and a fun and educational day was had by all.Foundation PhaseThe Foundation Phase is now being implemented fully in the Nursery and newLearning Support Assistants have been employed accordingly so that we can complywith the ratio of 1 adult to every 8 children.2007 -2008 ActivitiesGreen Flag Award / Healthy Eating WeekIn November 2007 we were awarded with the Green Flag award by Ecoschools forthe school’s projects in promoting healthy eating, reducing litter and saving energyand were visited by Jane Davison Minister for the Environment at the Assembly. Ourthanks goes to Mrs Frances Walker and the school’s Eco Committee for organising allthe hard work carried out. Congratulations to the newly elected Eco Committee –Shannon Trott, Joshua Evans, Matthew Davies, Joshua Boys, Tesni Rowlands, AlfiePayne, Holly Davies, Megan Tucknutt, Ceri Hopkins, Seren Rees, Grace Pontin.We had a successsful week of healthy eating in July 2007 with many parents sayingthat their children had eaten fruit voluntarily at home for the first time during thatweek. We all had fun – especially dressing up as a fruit or vegetable!BT Internet RangersWe were very fortunate to have been invited to take part in this project organised byBT as part of their links with the community. In March 2007 grandparents of Year 6children were invited into the school’s computer suite to receive lessons on computerskills by their grandchildren. It proved to be a very successful session which wasobserved by Mrs Jenny Randerson, the area’s Assembly Member.World Book DayThis year everybody came to school in their pyjamas accompanied by their favouritebedtime reading book and a puppet. Thanks to Mrs Angharad Walpole for organisingyet another eventful day.
