Message from <strong>the</strong> ChairOn <strong>be</strong>half of <strong>the</strong> Governors, I am pleased <strong>to</strong> present <strong>this</strong> <strong>report</strong> <strong>to</strong> you. It isintended <strong>to</strong> provide an overview of <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>’s activities and achievements over<strong>the</strong> last 12 months. It has <strong>be</strong>en ano<strong>the</strong>r busy year. Through <strong>the</strong>ir leadership, Miss Phillips and <strong>the</strong>management team have ensured th<strong>at</strong> all pupils receive <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st quality educ<strong>at</strong>ion,including opportunities <strong>to</strong> experience interesting and varied activities outside <strong>the</strong>classroom environment. In July, <strong>the</strong> School underwent a much-anticip<strong>at</strong>ed Estyn Inspection. Schools areindependently inspected every 6 years and <strong>this</strong> was <strong>the</strong> first inspection under <strong>the</strong>Leadership of Miss Phillips and <strong>the</strong> current leadership team. As you <strong>will</strong> know, <strong>the</strong>School passed in all areas and classed as sec<strong>to</strong>r leading for its learningenvironment and for <strong>the</strong> learning experiences provided <strong>to</strong> our pupils. You canaccess <strong>the</strong> full <strong>report</strong> from <strong>the</strong> School website and from <strong>the</strong> Estyn website.I would like <strong>to</strong> take <strong>this</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> thank Miss Phillips, <strong>the</strong> leadership team, all<strong>the</strong> staff <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> School as well as <strong>the</strong> pupils, parents, partners and stakeholders th<strong>at</strong>met with and answered <strong>the</strong> Inspec<strong>to</strong>rs’ questions as part of <strong>this</strong> process. From its humble <strong>be</strong>ginnings as a classroom in Albany Road School with 10 pupils,<strong>the</strong> School has now reached full capacity. This summer we said farewell <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> firstpupils who <strong>at</strong>tended our Meithrin as <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>to</strong> continue <strong>the</strong>ir educ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> GlanTaf. The introduction of <strong>the</strong> third Welsh Medium School is an excitingdevelopment, though it does leave us with c<strong>hall</strong>enges; as does <strong>the</strong> Council’s wish<strong>to</strong> increase our nursery provision. The Governing Body has voted by a majority <strong>to</strong>reject <strong>the</strong> Council’s request as we wish <strong>to</strong> safeguard <strong>the</strong> quality of educ<strong>at</strong>ion,learning experience and care th<strong>at</strong> we provide those who <strong>at</strong>tend our high qualityNursery.Due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> increase in <strong>school</strong> num<strong>be</strong>rs, we have requested th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council increase<strong>the</strong> size of <strong>the</strong> Governing Body <strong>to</strong> th<strong>at</strong> of c<strong>at</strong>egory C. This means th<strong>at</strong> we can havean additional parent governor as well as an additional LEA, Community andTeacher governor. This <strong>will</strong> ensure a gre<strong>at</strong>er pool of talent and resources for goodgovernance. The term of three parent governors ends <strong>this</strong> June; accordingly, wevery much hope th<strong>at</strong> an election for four parent governors <strong>will</strong> take place in <strong>the</strong>new year. I would like <strong>to</strong> take <strong>this</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> appeal for volunteers <strong>to</strong>undertake <strong>this</strong> rewarding role. The contribution th<strong>at</strong> parents can make in <strong>this</strong> roleis vital <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> effective running of <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>. We all have different skills, eachimportant. It is essential th<strong>at</strong> a truly represent<strong>at</strong>ive Governing Body has a good mixof skills, so we need parents <strong>to</strong> put <strong>the</strong>mselves forward for election. It can <strong>be</strong> anextremely rewarding and enriching experience.

We currently have a vacancy for a Community Governor due <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> resign<strong>at</strong>ion ofRhian Hacker who has <strong>be</strong>en a Governor from <strong>the</strong> very start of <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>’s life. Iwould like <strong>to</strong> take <strong>this</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> thank Rhian for over a decade’s service and<strong>to</strong> wish her well for <strong>the</strong> future. Rhian’s contribution is gre<strong>at</strong>ly appreci<strong>at</strong>ed. If youknow of any individual within <strong>the</strong> Community who would <strong>be</strong> interested/ ready <strong>to</strong>share <strong>the</strong>ir skills in <strong>this</strong> way, please let Miss Phillips or me know.I would like <strong>to</strong> say thank you <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Ffrindiau’ which continues <strong>to</strong> organisewonderful fundraising and social events. The success of <strong>the</strong>se events is a testament<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> hard work put in by many parents and friends of <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong> and is key <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>success of our <strong>school</strong>’s community. We faced numerous c<strong>hall</strong>enges during <strong>the</strong> year and I’m sure we <strong>will</strong> face manymore in <strong>the</strong> year <strong>to</strong> come, however with <strong>the</strong> continuing commitment of all <strong>the</strong> staff, parents and governors, as well as <strong>the</strong> continued enthusiasm of our pupils, I amconfident th<strong>at</strong> our <strong>school</strong> <strong>will</strong> continue <strong>to</strong> flourish. Finally I would like <strong>to</strong> take <strong>this</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> thank all of <strong>the</strong> staff <strong>at</strong> Ysgol yBerllan Deg for <strong>the</strong>ir dedic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> our children’s educ<strong>at</strong>ion and development.Nia Bennett
