Key Findings andRecommendations123Recommendations for Solar – Large Scale SolarGovernmentCurrently in Australia, there is a Melbourne based company ‘Solar Systems’ who aredeveloping, demonstrating and manufacturing solar concentrated technology forimplementation in Australian projects. Companies such as Solar Systems need to besupported, nurtured and assisted in every possible manner. This is essential to ensuringthat this company, and its intellectual property, is not enticed to other parts of the world asmany have gone before them.IndustryAustralia needs to re-engineer its manufacturing capacity, by supporting those companiesthat have been loyal to Australia. This will lead to be the unique solution that we sodesperately need.It is also important to ensure that we do not encounter an increasing scarcity of resourcesas demand increases within the context of reaching the 20% target by 2020. In order toavoid this situation it is imperative to support all technologies rather than putting all our eggsin one basket and then having the technologies all competing for the same resources.Courtesy: Solar SystemsKey Findings for Wind – Offshore WindThe European Parliament has mandated a 20% by 2020 binding renewable energy targetfor all Member States. As can be seen from the table above, interim targets have been set and onshore windcapacity is scheduled to grow by 3 times the 2007 installed capacity by 2020. The offshorewind sector, predicted to increase by approximately 32 times the 2007 installed capacity by2020, then a further major increase by 2030.Another major concern is that much of the current installed capacity, is coming to the endof its life cycle and over the next few years, these systems will need to be re-powered.That is wind turbines, their structures and associated components will need to be replacedand disposed.
