Mayor’smessageLast month this council joined industry leaders, innovators and a futurist at an economic summit. Our aim was to bring these pivotal people and thecouncil together to help us shape an economicstrategy for the Waikato district. We talked about how we generate economicgrowth, where we are going and what we can eachcontribute to the journey. We discussed the bigpicture, the small details and made some importantconnections. It didn’t surprise any of us the recurrent message ofthe day was that we must be more enabling. Weneed to address development with a pragmatic, individual approach. Our customers and theirneeds vary greatly and we are on a growththreshold that requires some forward thinking anda can-do attitude. And, while we need to abide bythe rules of local government, we can listen and wecan respond. The importance of collaboration was anotherhighlight. Our industries need to consider synergiesas they develop in terms of location, transport, technology, education, people and complimentaryindustries to ensure industry growth and supportour population. It all contributes to how weleverage from each other to develop and futureproofthis district. We are living in excitingtimes and what we do now has hugeimplications for shaping our future. This is the start of a conversationwe all need to contribute to.And it’s an ongoing story whichI look forward to progressing inmy term as mayor.Keep safe, stay well and havea wonderful Christmas and ahappy New Year.Marae Tukeretakes on new roleEarlier this year when Marae Tukere left the Waikato-Tainui TeKauhanganui Inc Tribal Development Unit that she helped to establishfive years ago, it was with mixed emotions. She was leaving behind a close-knit team of staff who wereresponsible for, among other things, the tribal register, maraedevelopment and training, and a comprehensive system ofmaatauranga, education and kaumaatua grants. But Mrs Tukere wasexcited to be heading to a senior position within Waikato DistrictCouncil as pouhono iwi ki te haapori (iwi & community partnershipmanager).“It’s a bit of a mouthful,” she laughs, “but what it really means is thata key part of my role is to bring a Maaori perspective to the workof council and to assist my colleagues in their interactions with thetribe.”“That includes everything fromeducating staff about correctpronunciation, to identifyingthe appropriate groups that thecouncil should be consultingwith, to giving advice onparticular issues of significance.”One of Mrs Tukere’s majorfocuses of her role is theimplementation of the JointManagement Agreement withWaikato -Tainui.“It’s a bit of a mouthful, but what (my job title)really means is that akey part of my roleis to bring a Maaoriperspective to thework of council and toassist my colleagues intheir interactions withthe tribe.2LINKAllan SansonMayormayor@waidc.govt.nz“It’s a priority – embeddingMarae Tukerethe relationship principles intothe way council operates andfinalising the seven schedules that specify the areas of co-managementand opportunity.”Mrs Tukere says any ‘free time’ is divided between her whaanau, her marae - Turangawaewae, politics, and sports. She is also activelyinvolved in a number of committees and boards in the district..
