In my heart, I’vealways wanted to be an artist. When I was just3-4 years old, I was always, drawing, drawing, drawing. In summer art classes, I was always so ‘totally there inthe moment.’ Then, as a young-adult at Lakeland Community College,I discovered Ceramics. This defining experience was very joyful.Especially in ceramics, I believe people get to know themselves andfrequently surprise themselves.” Then, around 2004, she says, therewas “a time; a need….and a little opening for me to step in and helpFairmount while I learned my way as a teacher. Now, I’m so connectedto my students, whether 2 years or 102 years old. Everybodyprocesses differently; I love the diversity; and, I respect each person’sindividuality. I try to help each student find their way in their owntime.” A few of Brigitte’s ‘beliefs’: 1.) Important to take care of yourspace and supplies: You must get ready to be creative; make way forthe good; then, go for it. 2.) Diversity is important to learning: work onboth process and skills; learn technique and have time to explore. 3.)About the future: Let it happen AND make it happen. Speaking aboutthe future, in spring 2014 Brigitte, the student, plans to get her BFA inCeramics from Kent State University.Fall 2013 • Fairmount Center For the Arts 17
