ByDAVID BRASCHAT 4.15am every day, Brian Young risesat his Deception Bay home to take his threegreyhounds for a walk. His son Peter and grandson, nine-year-oldJake are there every day as well. The trio have been swept along in a loveof all things greyhound racing. Peter hasalready applied for a license and Jake can'twait to be old enough to get his attendantslicense. When Go Wild Tiger (Go Wild Teddy-Queen Of Tigers) won on debut at Capalabarecently for Brian, it was his first greyhoundwinner for 38 years, but certainly won't behis last.Brian, 63, and wife Eveline stumbled intogreyhound racing back home in New Zealandwhen Brian was 25."I was a marathon runner at the time andso was interested in fitness etc," he told TheJournal.Back in those days greyhound racing waspretty small time in New Zealand, hardly theindustry it is today, and racing was more of apicnic atmosphere."Eveline and I were driving past theKumeu track just north of Auckland, anddecided to stop in and have a look at whatgreyhound racing was like," said Brian. As it happens, an announcement cameover the track PA for a giveaway greyhound, named Phantom Charm, to a good home."We took the dog straight away," saidBrian who admits to knowing nothing aboutthe animal or its feeding and training at thetime."What we did know was that it had a crookback," he said. "So we tossed it into the backpaddock at our home and left it there."The dog's back improved, it startedgalloping about with great zest and Brian andEveline thought seriously about racing it."I got a trainer's license and startedwalking the dog eight or 10 miles a day, aswell as letting it run in the paddock."So what does any newcomer to greyhoundracing do when he's got a greyhound ... raceit, of course."I nominated Phantom Charm for a 780metre race and immediately the guy who hadgiven us the dog rang to tell me it was asprinter and there was no chance it would run780m," said Brian. But in those days, making up a full fieldat greyhound racing in NZ was difficultenough. The club secretary talked Brian andEveline into running Phantom Charm. It won ... by 10 lengths."And we were hooked."So much so that within a very short timeBrian and Eveline had 30 greyhounds."We were taking mostly rejects and from1965 to 1972 did fairly well with them," hesaid."In fact we won six of the eight races runat Inglewood, near Taranaki, one day, and adog of ours called Scottish Command wonthe Auckland Cup Hurdle."Brian even spent time as secretary of theNZ Greyhound Association and regularly putout their monthly magazine. So the Youngs decided to expand. Theybought 15 acres to develop a greyhoundproperty. Fate stepped in a week later."We were on our way home from agreyhound social when we hit a power poleand both of us were in hospital for the nextthree months," said Brian. "When thathappened the dogs had to go."So in 1972 Brian and Eveline weresuddenly out of greyhound racing."Racing in those days was a bit rough andready," he said. "There was no betting butthere was always a couple of 'on-courseBrian'sbackafter38yearbreakGreyhound racingat the Younghousehold is afamily affair.bookies' willing to let you on, but prizemoneywas virtually nothing."The few dogs that were from Australiawon everything. In Christchurch the industrywas going ahead, but up in the North Island itwasn't."With the racing bug firmly installed in theYoungs, Brian decided to get into trotterssome time after."We had moderate success and in 1982we came to Australia with five kids onholidays and stayed," he said. At the timeBrian was breaking in thoroughbreds and heand the family came to Queensland to seeYoung Shaun run in a Queensland Cup.They set up base at Redcliffe and Briancontinued to dabble in trotters while workingat a variety of jobs."Springtime Lady was a good handy horsefor us and we've since had success with horseslike Left Dancing."In 1995 Brian got started in the financebusiness and has since successfully openedhis own property development/investmentbusiness.Todd Woods, one of the part-owners inLeft Dancing, talked Brian into buying a sharein a greyhound called Endless Pit. "Ibought one from Sydney, paid too much forit and it was no good."Since then he has bought Go Wild Tigerfrom the Ipswich Auction and won first-up atCapalaba.Vivacious Spirit is showing potential, andhe has an Elite State dog pup who at 14months is already beating his kennelmates upthe straight at Mango Hill without even beingbroken in."I've also got a Carnage pup being rearedin NSW," said Brian."Peter and Jake help me every day andthey too love greyhound racing. It's been greatfor Jake who never misses a day with thedogs."Brian is also a devoted fan of the GRA'straining guide "So You Want To Be AGreyhound Trainer"."I bought a copy soon after it came outand I've learnt more from reading that bookthan I did in 40 years," he said. The Youngs are devoted to greyhoundracing. Already Peter is talking about buyinga property to get into the industry himself.Brian Young knew 38 years ago he wason a winner.Black dog, Oct '02, 32.5kg.
