Under the agreement theAuthority receives 9.5% of the net distributionmade to Queensland Race Product CompanyLimited (Product Co) by UNiTAB Ltd.Since the EI crisis struck, the turnover onracing on UNiTAB has plummeted (with theClarry Early (Totally Serious-Coonowrin Red) wins a MaidenFinal at Albion Park. Jack haslegion offans(and owners)WHENEVER Jack The Pole goesracing, his fan club is huge and spreadfar and wide. While the dog might be owned by theTAB Beachhouse Syndicate whosemembers comprise Matt, Dan and JohnBowden and Jacquiline Day, hisownership has virtually been taken overby the locals at the Marburg Hotel andthe Beachhouse Hotel at Hervey Bay.Matt Bowden has put the syndicatetogether and it was his and his dad Dan’saim to involve their patrons as much aspossible in the race careers of their dogs, specially Jack The Pole. When the son of Trendy Leigh-Where’s Wendy made the final of therecent Ipswich Young Guns, a couple ofMatt and DanBowden withtheir promisingyoungster JackThe Pole.busloads of Marburg Hotel patrons camealong for the night.“There was no one at home at thepub,” lamented Matt.'Leading All The Way'2007 Group 2IpswichGold CupProudly Sponsored by “Ipswich City Council.”But while the regulars at both pubshave taken a huge interest in the Bowdendogs in recent times, it wasn’t alwaysthat way.In fact, back in 2002 Matt boughthimself a couple of pups from theIpswich Auction, one at $2800, anotherat a cheap $400.“I bought a Yo Yo’s Boy-Who’s ABearing for $2800 and it couldn’t trot,”said Matt.“But I knew Jamie Shelly whotrained Virginia Flyer and she had somepups in the auction as well, so I bought abitch by Master Havoc out of VirginiaFlyer for $400,” he said. The bitch was named Where’s Wendyand from 20 race starts she won 11 times, all over short courses, from the TonyBrett kennel.“She kept coming on season,” saidMatt. “Eventually we decided to breedwith her.”By the time Where’s Wendy got hometo the Marburg Hotel, she was alreadyeight days on season.“We tried a couple of Tony Apap’sBrother FoxGun Law OstiMiss Dusty LeeTrendy LeighNew TearsSobbing SalWee SalJACK THE POLEHead HonchoMaster HavocWee SalWhere’s WendyAcacia AblazeVirginia FlyerHow’s Tarasires but they were booked out, so we puther to Trendy Leigh,” said Matt. “I put$1000 on them and could have sold 20pups. Dogs for Racing OverseasMust be under 26 monthsMatt.Matt Bowden has been a long-timefriend of the Brett family. Every Tuesdayhe, Tony’s father Dave, Ron Ball andMatt’s mate Matt Hill would play golf.“It introduced me to Tony and Istarted helping him out after that,” saidMatt. He also worked regularly at IpswichClub in the kennels at first and then evenhandling a stint as starter.Just about every dog’s name has astory behind it and Jack The Pole is nodifferent.“Les Birnie runs the antique shopacross the road from the MarburgHotel,” said Matt. “He’s a Scotsman whocame from Tomintoul a small town in thenorth east coast of Scotland. And in thattown, just about everyone has anickname.“Jack The Pole runs the local pub,The Pole Inn.”Already winning photos of Jack ThePole (the greyhound version) have beensent back to Scotland and hang proudlyin The Pole Inn at Tomintoul.“The boys at Tomintoul even watchfor the results on the web,” said DanBowden.Greyhound racing has long been apart of the Bowden family.“My father, who was best known asYub, ran the bar at the Rocklea dogtrack during the second world war,” saidDan.And Dan has already been in asuccessful syndication with former GRAchair Ross Lawson, QC the late BobDouglas, Darcy Doyle and Sam Zammitwhich raced Steenie Stomper and VinceCurry runner-up Small Risk. These days Dan spends his timebetween the Hervey Bay TAB and theMarburg Hotel. He’s also been on thecommittee of the Ipswich Turf Club since1991.While high hops are held for JackThe Pole, even higher hopes rest on acouple of other litters Where’s Wendyhas since whelped.“She’s got a litter by Black Enforcerat breaking in and another six monthsold by Surf Lorian,” said Matt.“We’ve kept them all, but Tony Brettand Steve Hawkins have come into theSurf Lorian litter with us. I’ve now got30 greyhounds.“Amazingly all 17 pups Where’sWendy has whelped in her three litters todate have all been black,” said Matt.Jack The Pole might have had littleluck when unplaced behind Spirit Squadin the Young Guns final at Ipswich, butthere is little doubt he is a qualitygalloper destined for the top. He’ll have plenty of “owners” givinghim a cheer along the way … even a fewaround Tomintoul in Scotland.Jack The Pole racesaway to win his heat ofthe recent IpswichYoung Guns.Ph Steve Wilkes(07) 54465112 or 0427 319944RACEREveryday Performance Food For GreyhoundsHaving been involved in greyhounds for over twenty years, with thepast seven of those as a professional trainer. I've found that greyhoundsneed consistency in their diet. With a lot of the big name brands ofkibble rising in price. We were losing a lot of kibble that had turned todust. And after soaking a lot of kibbles just turn to mush.I was just not getting the consistency I was after. We gave "Enduro Racer" a try, containing 8% fat and a high proteinlevel we found it to be just the right combination we were looking for. Itsoaked up a lot of water without turning to mush. The dogs liked thetaste and my greyhounds are racing as well as they ever have. With "Black Enforcer" winning the Group 1 "Topgun", Australia'srichest one out race, "Quidame" running 34.79 seconds, the secondfastest time over the 600 metres at Albion Park, I am only too happy torecommend Enduro Racer as a great kibble for the racing greyhound.Champion Trainer Tony Brett is a proud member of the Enduro Racing TeamFOR THE ULTIMATE CHAMPION RACING DOG, FEED ENDURO RACERTrade enquiries please call Keri on 0427 701 045or Email feedwellstockfeeds@yahoo.com.au100% Australian Made and OwnedTony BrettEnduro Racer is a complete and optimally balanced maintenance Formula targeted at providing a nutritious dietfor racing greyhounds. Bear heads to schoolBy Christine Turner (Prep Teacher)THE Walloon State School Prep class recently held activities centredaround a pet topic. Each child had the opportunity to bring in their pet for show and tell.Logan Simon and his dad Lance brought along their greyhound BarryJohn, or Bear as he is known around the kennels.Bear is pictured above with the class. The purpose of the pet theme was to teach and learn about different petsand their needs. We also set up an area as a vet hospital. In the vet hospital the childrenbrought along their sick toy animals to be “treated”!The Pet Pep program was also held, which involved a real vet and arepresentative of the Ipswich Council visiting the class who showed andexplained how to care for their pet’s health and responsible pet ownership. The children bought in items related to pets for display such as a dogcollar, fish food, animal toys, dog tags and a cat kennel.Activity books and many pet related projects have made this a mostworthwhile learning experience.Generous Gift (above) wins at Albion Park for owner Denise Kavanagh (below).Denisecherishesher 'late'birthday giftA COUPLE of decades ago when Mick Zammit decided to take on professionaltraining himself, Denise Kavanagh was the first to give Mick a dog to train. She continued, providing Mick with a number of high class gallopers over the manyyears since, dogs like Perth Cup winner Brisk Bill.So when Denise turned 60 in April 2005, Mick and his wife Selena gave their loyalclient a birthday present. But Denise had to wait a few months to collect. By DAVID BRASCHGRAHAM Moscow has been goinggreyhound racing since he was five, back inEngland, to the flapping tracks with hisbookmaker dad Lew and mum Gladys. He and his soccer teammates went racingas often as they could when in their teens. He completed a greyhound trainer’scourse in 1989 while living in Adelaide andloved it.He has bred a number of litters withsuccess. But only in the past year, at the age of 52,has he started training himself … and he’sloving every minute of it.That dog is Zay Mocco (Bitability Bale-Bourbon Dancer) an $800 Ipswich Auctionbuy and winner of the Grafton JacarandaMaiden and 10 races in all.Graham, however, has lived a life moreon the go than most, spending working stintsin Australia, Fiji and China all of which haverestricted his greyhound training hopes.Lew Moscow, Graham’s father, ran hisown betting shop in London’s East End wherethe family lived.“My dad loved greyhound racing so much, that when the races had finished and he closedthe betting shop, he would load mum and meinto the car and head to the flapping track atRaleigh near Essex where he had a bookiesstand,” said Graham.“I was 10 at the time.”It was Lew who got his son-in-law JeffDroy interested in greyhound training. Lewraced a number of dogs around Harringay atthe time and all the time it instilled in his sonGraham a love of the chase.Lew died in 1966. Jeff Droy and Graham’ssister Linda had moved to Australia in 1965.Graham’s mum Gladys is 92 and still lives inthe family home in London’s East End.When Graham Moscow was 23, hebrought his family to Australia. “My in-lawslived in Adelaide and they had organised workfor me,” he said.A tailor by trade, Graham got intomanufacturing in 1978 in Adelaide and by1985 had his own factory supplying DavidJones, Jeans West etc. When the stock marketcrash soon after closed his business, Grahammoved to Brisbane in 1992.There he worked as a manager at Bisleyand Pike which produced 3.2 millionenvelopes a day at Rocklea.By 1995, the rag trade called again andhe headed to Fiji to open another factory. “Thebusiness was huge and for seven years we had300 staff and produced a million garments ayear for Target, Coles, K-Mart, Levis, Speedoetc,” he said. “Then came the military coupin Fiji …”The coup was never going to be a goodthing for businesses run by ex-pat Poms.“I held on for another year but eventuallywe paid out the staff and closed up,” he said.“The ACTU put a ban on all goods going intoand coming out of Fiji. We couldn’t getmaterial out of Australia, or send completedgoods into Australia.”That was May 2000. He was back inAustralia in 2001, working a number of jobs, including one for Elite State’s owner JimOsborn.A two year stint in China followed.“Then I was ready for a break, so I camehome in 2005 and worked for a while as aunder-14 zonal development soccer coach inSouth-west Queensland,” he said. All this time he was breeding a few littersof greyhounds and keeping his hand in as anowner. He had some success specially with a bitchcalled Glasgow Doll who Tom Tzouvelis tookto wins at Albion Park, Tweed, the Gold Coastand Ipswich.CredibilityBearabilityKissy BearBitability BaleGrove Whisper*Jindara BaleStar LeeZAY MOCCONew TearsUltimate WishLauren’s DesireBourbon DancerAmerigo ManBourbon QueenBourbon’s IrishThen in October 2005 he headed off tothe Ipswich Auction and paid $800 for theBitability Bale-Bourbon Dancer dog hewould name Zay Mocco. “I remembered hisgranddam Bourbon Queen winning in Sydneyso that’s why I bought him,” said Graham. The dog was named after his grandsonLeaders forthe past 16years in theCollection,Storage andInseminationof FrozenSemen totheGreyhoundRacingIndustryManly Road VetPhone(07) 33969733Zaylan Moscow. Ron Ball watches over DirtyVegas, Berella Diva andWitheren's Girl on thewalking machine.RON Ball, like all top class trainers, iswell aware that they are only as good as thegreyhounds they have in their kennel. But Ball, like so many of the premiertrainers, always seems to come up with thebetter quality greyhound. While Ron’s personality can sometimesbe fiery and impatient, as a greyhound traineris exudes patience with his dogs. And theylove him. You only have to spend a few hoursat his kennels to know that.Every greyhound on the property is aseparate entity, every one of them looks infirst class order, for every one Ball has a planmapped out. He’s that meticulous. His methods are much the same as manytrainers, but vary in subtle ways to most. These are they:FEEDINGBall’s greyhounds, like most having tocope with the heat in Queensland, get plentyof fluids. Breakfast for all greyhounds inBall’s care consists of 500mls of a milkpowder (Ensure) and water. To this is added10mls of Stamezene an electrolyte madespecifically for racehorses.“It is caramel flavoured and it tempts adog to drink the fluid,” said Ball. The milk is given first and when finished, each dog is given a 4x2 biscuit.Dinner is meat and kibble with vitaminsadded, just like most other greyhounds in thecountry.Dogs are fed between 680gms and950gms of meat, bitches get between 550gmsand 580gms. Kibble is only Farrells and variesbetween 100gm and 150gms for each dog.“I have fed Farrells for as long as it hasbeen on the market and have no intention ofchanging,” said Ball.Daily vitamins are 20mls of Sprint Oil,DCP powder, a Beta K tablet and oneMethanine 90 tablet.Feramo D and Kelp are fed every secondnight and Ironcyclen is fed three times a week.“I always put one cup of boiling waterover the kibble, then add the meat andvitamins,” said Ball. “The boiling watermakes the meal warm when it is given to theFor appointmentsor InquiriesPhone Rick FallSpecialists inRearing, BreakingIn, Arm & BoxRe-Education.(For Break InsPlease book at least 2Months ahead.)Lot 13 Wotan RdAtkinson Dam 4311.Ph 07 54264338or 0427 264338Trials byappointmentonly ...Tues, Thurs,Sat, SunMornings.dogs.”Every second night he will grate carrotand apple over the dog’s dinners.“I used to chop spinach and mix it in, butwith 25 dogs in work I don’t have time forthat,” he said. “It hasn’t affected their abilitynot getting it.”WORMINGBall uses Ivomec as an all purposeworming and heartworm prevention on thefirst of every month, and then every secondmonth uses Drontal for tapeworms.PRE/POST RACEDogs racing during the day or at night allreceive their breakfast as normal. If they are racing during the day, no feedin given prior to heading to the track. But if Ball has a runner at a nighttimemeeting, he will cook up 3ozs of meat andmix it with some fluids and feed it to therunner about 2pm at virtually the same timethe rest of the kennel is receiving their mainmeal. After racing, each dog is given its normaldinner. But after that, the dogs that raced will alsobe given 500mls of full cream milk, adessertspoon full of acidophilus yoghurt, anda cube of cheese (half the size of a kennelticket) as a treat.“I heard years ago from a vet that cheeseis good for a dog’s brain,” said Ball. “I’vebeen feeding the cheese treat ever since.”Ball said he used to feed stews to his dogsafter racing but it became too time consumingwhen his dog number grew substantially.Congratulations ...To the connections of our new break-in recordholder, a Collision bitch who ran 17.85.Encounter Kennels &Breaking In ComplexBreak-in Vacancies ...With the completion of our new kennel block forracing dogs, this has given us more space in ourbreaking-in kennel block.Phone us to inquire about a booking forbreaking-in and join the many satisfiedcustomers to have used our services.Trainingcan bea BallDAILY ROUTINEThe Ball kennel is roused into action from7am in winter and earlier in summer.Ball has always built undercover emptyout yards. At his Prenzlau kennels he has fourof these.Six dogs at a time are let out into thesesmall yards. “It’s a must during wet weatherto get the dogs to empty, that’s why I havealways had undercover yards like this, as wellas a couple outside as well,” he said.Once emptied, three dogs are put on thewalking machine for 20 minutes. The dogswalk briskly for 15 minutes, then the speed isincreased to a trot for five minutes, and finallyslowed for a warm-down of two to threeminutes.“Every dog gets warmed up before theygallop,” said Ball.“I don’t have a straight track on my newproperty, but I have two competition runs thatare 130 metres long.”After the warm-up on the walkingmachine, two dogs are put into thecompetition runs.“I like to see them free gallop for 500metres,” he said. “It’s controlled galloping. We have to work out who will gallop withwhom. Some won’t run with certain dogs, some will do too much etc.“Every dog goes into the competition runsevery day.”The entire kennel is finished by 10.30 to11am.Ball is adamant that greyhounds need towork every day.The afternoon work is started at 2.30pmon race days, a little later if there are norunners that night. “We are aware of ourobligations to kennel on time, so that’s whywe start at 2.30 on race days,” said Ball. The dogs are let out to empty and thenfed.EARLY EDUCATIONRon believes this is where he differs frommost trainers.“I believe the initial education of agreyhound is crucial to its fitness and just howlong and constantly it can race,” said Ball.Ball gives his pups a month break afterbreaking in.Once they are brought into the kennels, they are educated to the daily routine and freegalloped for three weeks and taught toexperience the walking machine. Then the pups are put through a six toeight week fitness program galloping up thestraight track behind the lure.Ball starts them off at 150m before thelure every second day and then graduallyincreases the length of the straight gallop. THE fact that Ron Ball has trained three Queensland Greyhounds of the Year (Flying Amy twice,Boronia Blossom and Springtime Magic) speaks volumes about the training ability of Ron Ball. Amywas the first dog inducted into the Australian greyhound Hall of Fame and in the first induction inthe Queensland Hall of Fame.Ball is never without a quality greyhound. He’s proved that in recent times. After a lean trot, he hasbounced back with a line-up of top class stock. Journal Editor DAVID BRASCH sat down with Ronand got an insight into his training methods.straight.“The straight work is six to eight weeksand the pups are really fit by then,” said Ball.“If I’m happy they are coming up well, Iwill go to the circle.”He uses the circle trials track run by JohnCollins at Postman’s Ridge and Rick Fall atEncounter Kennels at Churchable.“I only ever slip the pups on a corner, increasing it the next time before then puttingthem in the boxes about their third or fourthtrial,” he said.“The number of trials all depends on howthe pups are going.”This education period can take betweenthree and four months before the now youngrace dog is ready to start trialling onracetracks.Ball has cut down on the amount of fieldexperience he gives pups these days. “It’sbasically a thing of the past with me,” he said.“Anyway, you can’t field trial dogs like FlyingAmy.”He says that once a dog has been broughtup with this patient education process thereis never any real need to spell the dog.“Once educated I rarely trial a dog,” hesaid. “I believe the less a dog sees a lure, theTHE ORIGINALAUSTRALIAN PLASTICGREYHOUND MUZZLESStop PressThe Original AustralianPlastic (nylon)Muzzleshave beenapprovedfor racingon alltracks inQld byGRA.better it will chase in a race.”He said he now uses the “fantastic”straight track operated by Nigel Rugg atChurchable. “It’s as good as any I’ve seen.My dogs go over there maybe once or twicea week if they are not racing,” said Ball.“But I refuse to have a squeaker in thecatching pen. I don’t want dogs starting tolook for that temptation in the pen. I wantthem looking for where it has gone.”Ball says most trainers he sees do noteducate their dogs enough at this early age.“If you are going to educate them, educatethem properly,” he said.GENERALBall says he has always been fortunate tohave quality race dogs in his kennel. He does all his own muscle work. “I waseducated by the boss himself, Graham Beh,”he said.Ball uses a laser machine only on boneproblems, and sticks religiously to the use ofan ultrasound on muscles. “I also do a lot ofphysio on them,” he said.“I’m looking at my dogs every day, all day.I watch them, and watch them, and watchthem. I always put a lead on my dogs and letthem walk in front of me, never lead them bythe collar.“I can see them walking in front of meand this is so telling for any little problemsthat may be there.”He says he constantly keeps watch onimportant muscles like the hip support, hamstring, calf etc in young dogs. “I believethree sore spots on a dog will cost it threelengths in a race,” he said. “Depending onwhere they are.”Every dog is given a hydrobath on racemorning. “That will surprise a few people,”he said.He also believes stayers need much morework than sprinters. “My stayers definitelyhave a different preparation,” said Ball. “Iwant to see them free gallop at least 800m aday.“Boronia Blossom (winner of twoAre now readilyavailable again ...* Lightweight* Ideal for travelling, kennelling & trialling* Durable * 6 SizesSole Distributor: Miller's Muzzles0418 315790www.millersmuzzles.comNational Distance titles and a Gold Cup atAlbion Park) would be put on my straighttrack and free gallop with the pups on theother side of the track.“Then she would be put up the straightover 300m, and after that allowed to freegallop on the straight as well. You get to knowwhen they’ve had enough.”Ball says many barkyard trainers face adifficult task competing with theprofessionals. “Their dogs are never going toget the consistency of galloping they need. They must use their muscles every day,” hesaid.Ball will get a “gut feeling” about a dogand keep it for as long as he feels necessaryto bring the best out in it.“It is something you feel about a dog, thatmaybe there might be more to it,” he said.“Shining Gazelle took nine months to getgoing and at her fourth race start she brokethe track record at Ipswich,” he said.“My current star Dirty Vegas was sixmonths before I got him going as well as Ithought he should to start.”Ball makes sure every dog racing has thequicks taped on the inside and outside toe onevery foot. “We never have a problem withinfected quicks because we do this every timethey race,” he said.“Often we will leave them on for weeksat a time.”He also has built a type of foot bath forhis dogs.It is about four foot long and three footwide and four inches deep. In it he puts waterto two or three inches deep and with adisinfectant included.Every dog coming back into the kennelsin led through that foot bath to not only cleantheir feet after being outside, but to keep thekennel area free of any infections as well. The kennels are hosed every day.The foot bath is refilled every day.And for his final word.“Champions are born,” said Ron. “Theyare not made by trainers. We only just lookafter them.”Ball should know, he’s had some of thebest and one of the greatest. The Home-Grown Championwith the OUTCROSS pedigreeVesuvioBlack Dog, Dec 2002, 33.8kg. She proceededto win eight races for Irene around countrytracks in Victoria.“But she started jumping the running railafter her races and darting across the track toget the lure,” said Irene. “So we turned herinto a hurdler and she won six hurdle races atSandown.”Around that time, Vic was a pretty astuteman with a greyhound. Irene took over thetraining of one of Vic’s best gallopers, calledStar Myth, after an indiscretion put Vic onthe sidelines for a short while. While with Irene, Star Myth was beatenin a photo finish by Debbie Rose in a featureVictorian race with Rocket Streak in third.By 1970, Irene had headed back toQueensland working as a cook for Qld Rail.In 1972 she married Don Malouf while inBrisbane and the pair hooked a caravan upand headed around Australia. They got to Mount Isa when CycloneTracey devastated Darwin. “I was allowed inbecause I was a cook and I worked in the soupkitchens that were put up to feed the peoplethere,” she said.It wasn’t long after that don died of cancerand Irene herself came down with illnesswhich forced her to Atherton in 1979.“I worked at the Barron Valley Hotel forthe next 13 years,” she said.It was here that she met Bob Drury andhe brought along a team of greyhounds forIrene to train. They married in 1981 and Irene took uptraining again.“Bob had a bitch called Super Galant whowon a lot of races up here and we bred withher and won races with the pups,” she said.“A friend of mine had raced a bitch calledAs an extension of Renzo Park Rearing and Spelling Complex, we are now offeringa transport service for your valuable animals.RenzoParkPET TRANSPORT SERVICE* Pick-up Grafton Saturday (appointment only)* Leaving Casino sunday (early AM)* Returning Casino Sunday PM* Pick-up and Drop off along the way* Other trips available by arrangementInquiries & Bookings: Peter & Helen SimpsonPh: (02) 66335115 Mob: Peter 0438 792348 Helen 0428 302725CALM SAMMonalee ChampionLeaders ChampionLittle LeaderMelkris LadTivoli ChiefGallant AnneRiviera MossBenjamin JohnUngwilla LadSweet DeebanaCanadian LadyArkaroolaBlack BayouBinalong BabeIrene Druryand herfavouritegreyhoundCalm Sam.Canadian Lady who ran second in a DarwinCup. She’s been onthe Cairns Club committee for seven yearsand admires Emma O’Connor for thededication she shows to the presidency andthe club.“That’s club would be in trouble if itwasn’t for Emma,” said Irene.Calm Sammis the best dog she’s had andthe former great Cairns galloper StationMaster, raced by Catholic priest Father Pat,is the best she’s seen, although Tropical Onewent close to toppling him.“I’ve seen a lot of changes in greyhoundracing up here in my time,” said Irene. But the one thing that hasn’t changed forthe past two decades is that Irene Drury hasbeen a stalwart of greyhound racing in town. The (October, 2007) Journal Page 22

Giveaway bitchproves a Blessingfor CaitlynCAITLYN Donnelly is a determinedyoung woman, specially when it comes toher new-found love of greyhound racing. And when Valhalla (Lindale Blue-Solar’s Blessing) won first-up at AlbionPark recently, it justified everything shehas had to go through in the past couple ofyears to get this far.Caitlyn, 20, is the eldest of five childrenin Andrew and Lea Donnelly’s family.Andrew’s dad Frank was a dog man inAdelaide most of his life. Andrew himselfraced a few dogs with limited success. But it is Caitlyn who has got the familyback into greyhound racing in the pastcouple of years.“I spent 14 years in the medical corpsin the Army,” said Andrew. “After I leftthe Army I brought my family to live onsix acres at Pine Mountain (just outsideIpswich).”In the late 90s, Andrew’s dad Frankwas dying but convinced his son he shouldget a greyhound or two.“I got a bitch called Rachel’s Rocketon lease through the old Sporting Globe inVictoria and we won a couple of races atAngle Park with her,” said Andrew. When Andrew and Lea brought theirfamily, Caitlyn, Andria, Robert, Meganand now John, in a station wagon to liveat Pine Mountain in 1997, Rachel’s Rocketwas in the car as well on her way to abreeding career.“When we arrived at our new home,we decided to mate Rachel’s Rocket andshe went to Hanson Diamond, producingeight pups,” said Andrew. “Four went toVictoria and two won, but of our four thebest we did was a third placing at Capalabain a maiden with one bitch.”That cured Andrew … but not Caitlyn.A couple of years ago, Andrew was outplaying golf one Saturday morning. Hisdaughter was at home pouring through thegreyhound classifieds section of TheWeekend Shopper.“I got a phone call to tell me there wasRIGHT: Lea, Andrew and CaitlynDonnelly with Valhalla after her AlbionPark victory. BELOW: Valhalla opens hercareer with a win.a giveaway broodbitch in the paper,” saidAndrew. “I was told the pedigree and thenasked what the bitch had done on the track.“I suggested they forget about it, butCaitlyn and Lea went half way across townand got her anyway.”It was Solar’s Blessing. She was alreadysix and had won a few prizes in the showring.“We had her a week and she came onseason,” said Andrew. The bitch was sent to Tony Apap to bemated to Lindale Blue. “Tony was fabulousin the help he gave Caitlyn. Solar’s Blessinghad eight pups and we sold two, lost oneand have ended up with five.”The expenses of rearing, then breakingin and now training that five-dog kennelhas been Caitlyn’s mission for the past twoyears.Caitlyn is studying law at university, works part-time at the Bank of Queenslandat Goodna, and picked up another parttimejob at Woolworths to help pay for thedogs.“She also saved up to buy a walkingmachine and an ultrasound,” said a proudCorey Pearce Picsdad.“Our hope was that we might win acouple of races and we would be happy, but when Valhalla won at her first racestart, the entire family was overjoyed.“We watched the video on the win 20times that night and Caitlyn watched itherself at least another 20 times after that.”The kennel has particularly high hopesfor a dog in the litter named Par Oneri, named after an Army Corps motto whichmeans “Equal to the Task”.The Donnelly admit they have not beentempted to breed with Solar’s Blessingagain. “We just can’t afford it, but shelooks fantastic and lives a great life aroundour home,” said Andrew. While the greyhound team is Caitlyn’sthing, the rest of the family all help out andall of them celebrated the victory byValhalla.“Caitlyn has done a wonderful job withthose dogs,” said dad. “She loves ‘em all.”81 Glebe Rd, Silkstone Q 4304Phone/Fax:07 3281 1277Delivery AvailableFresh Quality Pet FoodUNDER NEW MANAGEMENTWON ON EVERYCITY TRACKBlackTragically retired dueto hip support injuryLeeWinner Gateway to the Top (Alb Pk)Runner-up 2005 Perth Cup (to Sun Hero)Third 2005 Adelaide Cup (to Collide)Finalist 2005 Silver ChiefWinner Alb Pk 30.19, 30.20 (23 mths), WP 30.20 (24 mths), Mead 29.86,30.19 (26 mths), SP 29.80, 29.82 (28 mths), Ang Pk 29.34 (29 mths),Cannington 30.38 (31 mths). Mackay NewsAs we know it is a great thrill to own agood dog but just imagine how you wouldfeel when you have bred it yourself. Sarinatrainers Reno and Vicki Mifsud areexperiencing that now.A few years ago they raced the top classbitch Good One Cheli. On retirement theydecided to breed from her, so they chosethe sire Royal Assassin. After some bad luck and injury thereare now three of the pups racing.Reno and Vicki train two of these,Royal Avenue who has had 16 starts forsix wins, four seconds and three thirds andFlying Monk who has had 14 starts for fivewins, a second and three thirds.Affectionately known at home asBonnie and Clyde they now have the taskof racing against each other. The Mifsud family are all veryinvolved with their dogs and have alwaysbeen but the most devoted would have tobe the youngest Melina who has beenknown to sit and watch video tapes to thestage she can call the races with no sound. Before and after school she can alwaysbe found with the dogs taking them out tothe run and reading to them while they areon the walker. The third of the litter is So Ha Ha, nowowned and trained by Michelle Brider, whohasn’t been as lucky due to injury but hasmanaged two wins, a second and fourthirds from 14 starts but has plenty ofability. So let’s hope that they can continue toexhibit the brilliance they are currentlyshowing.Gary ClarkNew South WalesBUSTING the scales at 43 kilos, thebiggest dog in training has just contestedhis first Group race in the Canberra Cup.Frisky Jack, the monster in any racehe contests, is of interest every time heraces due to his size, which certainlydoesn’t hamper his results. The power of this giant chaser as hepounds over the sand has seen him win sixraces already at Canberra and WentworthPark..Owned and trained by Leon Jakobasic,Frisky Jack is a blue dog, a colour hisowner was from the start.“When I bought him (Frisky Jack) at10 months old and saw he was a bluecolour, I thought no way, I hate thatcolour,” he said.Fortunately for Leon he had secondthoughts and went against his judgmentand purchased the pup also having no ideahow much growth was to come.Frisky Jack opened his career at Bulliback in January weighing 39.8kg but hisnatural development continued and hisweight at Canberra in July at start number15 was 43kg, which he has been around insix starts since.“When I gave him his first run at BulliI was embarrassed, he looked to light,”Leon explained. There is currently a couple of 40kg pluschasers in Victoria, Tonka Bale (40kg)being one of these and a 29.67 Sandownwinner.Going back to 1995 there was a dog inNSW appropriately named Bean Stalkerwho raced at 42kg and won four races atAppin and Bulli having just 15 starts.I’m sure the historians will be lookingfor record weights but in my memoryFrisky Jack holds the weight record. His action at times indicates he is notstretching out in full stride but that is justan illusion.“Frisky” is continually balancingaround the tight tracks during his racesmaking it hard to fully stride in sartorialelegance. Leon agreed: “He looks that wayto me at times”.Leon started with dogs when he was 15and had a great relationship with his dad,Jacko, which is also Leon’s nickname.“I wish dad was here now, he would beenjoying watching this dog,” Leon said.“I raced a dog with dad, named HotChili, and I’m still learning what it is allabout. IN the early 1990s Kevin Richards wasthe biggest name in Australian greyhoundracing. He stood Chariot Supreme, who toppedthe Victoria sires list for seven years, andRichards was also involved in winning fourof the state’s premier races, the AustralianCup, Melbourne Cup, Silver Chief andLaurels.Richards, 62, had weaned himself fromhis involvement which at one stageincluded eight stud dogs and a 20-strongteam of elite racers. He bought a florist shop which he soldfour years ago and is now working onreducing his golf handicap.Of course he still has still an interest ingreyhound racing. He said he still has a bet on a fewgreyhounds and selects racers he thinks willbe suitable for Western Australian racing.Richards' idea of a quiet punt is a littlefrightening because he has never beenknown to do thinks by half.He said he studies a lot of videos andfollows trainers he respects, trainers likeKelvyn Greenough, Jason Thompson,Stan Wardle and Glen Rounds.“I follow their dogs because theyproduce consistent performances. It’s notjust about backing good dogs, it’s aboutthose dogs being consistent,” he said.“There’s nothing more annoying as apunter than backing good dogs which arenot consistent. I might have a couple ofsolid bets a week.”The dogs Richards has sent to WesternAustralia include Global Warming, out ofthe Betty’s Angel litter (Brett Lee-Leprechaun Yap). The dog was bought for $10,000 andhas won $42,000 in WA.Richards said racing in WesternAustralia had taken off with a grade five atCannington worth $2900 to the winner anda dog can win three grade fives.“You can always send your dog back tocontinue racing elsewhere,” he said.Richards said he had a fair run out ofgreyhounds for a long time.Surgical implants had made the job ofthe studmaster immeasurably easier. He had up to eight stud dogs he wasusing naturally and Chariot Supreme had afull book of then 14 bitches for years. He said splitting services and muchimprovedtesting had reduced the stressload on studmasters.“It was a juggling act. You had to relyon staff, you can’t do it all yourself, andrelying on staff could be stressful,” he said. While Richards was considered the No1 studmaster of his time, his passion hasalways been racing. He won the Silver Chief with HopefulSupreme, Australian Cups with Light OfFire and Fibba and the Melbourne Cup withLight Of Fire. His Laurels success with Labyrinthcame while he was winding down hisinvolvement in the late 1990s.“I fulfilled what I wanted to do _ winthose four races,” he said.“I’ve got no incentive to train, I’mretired and I don’t have any interest inhaving a few pups in the backyard. I’vedone it. I love watching the dogs and that’smy involvement. I’m happy to sit at homeand watch the races on TV.”Richards said he still enjoyed thechallenge of punting.“I still find that stimulating. There’snothing like having your judgement backedup by a greyhound performing as youexpect _ and winning a little bit,” he said.“I watch a lot of videos, slow themdown and go through them frame by frame.Andrew ThomsonI tape every one of the dogs the trainers Ifollow put around. Sometimes I know moreabout their dogs than they do.”One achievement Richards is proud ofis having three greyhounds from the samelitter contesting the Australian Cup, HeadHoncho-Maudie littermates Fibba, Fraudand Superbee.“That was an unbelievable effort _ itmay never be done again and to win it withFibba of course,” he said.Richards said breeders’ pursuit of speedhad led to faster greyhounds but poorerchasers.“We had stud dogs like Second Stage,Chariot Supreme and Bowetzel. They threwa lot of chasers,” he said.“Bombastic Shiraz is probably the beststud dog for throwing chasers. Sometimesyou are better off with a dog that can justrun 30 second dead than a dog that can run29.86 but is not the greatest chaser.”He has always spoken his mind.He said he had last used an importedstud dog in 1986 and international sires hadlittle impact on Australian racing.Richards was disqualified for 12 monthsafter authorities found his stud dog WarySuspect had been substituted for ChariotSupreme.Dual National Distance ChampionBoronia Blossom was one well-performedgreyhound found to be sired by WarySuspect.Chariot SupremeVictoriaRichards said he had beentreated harshly by greyhoundracing authorities.“I was crucified,” he said.“It was very tough.Chariot Supreme never hadhis DNA taken. The fortunatething to come out of all thatwas there are no more no greyareas in breeding any more.”Richards said hesupported surgical implantsand other technologicaladvances since the 1980s.He said as a studmaster he oftencouldn’t read a bitch’s earbrand.“Even back then I was pushing forbitches to be micro-chipped,” he said.“I said back then litters were being rungin and all the blame was being put at thefeet of studmasters.”Richards said a leading breeder twicesent him two bitches at the same time.“They went to Chariot Supreme. Thefirst of the bitches had 13 pups and theAustralia's leading andOldest Greyhound PaperSELL YOUR PUPS OR RACING DOGSSPECIAL RATESRing GARY 1800 677 273other missed. The next time one bitch had12 pups and the other one missed,” he said.“I had to give out two return services. Iwas the only one to lose out of that andthere was no reason there shouldn’t havebeen four litters."There was nothing stopping thebreeder swapping the pups over . . . therewas no check system.’’Richards said one regret he did havewas that The Meadows was not a one-turntrack.Richards was one of three MGRAdirectors who voted for a half-circle tracklike Ballarat, Geelong or the Gold Coast.“The others were Peter Pearson andMax Scott but we got outvoted,” he said.“We were told that a two-turn trackwould be better for betting turnover but Icould never understand that argument. We’ve got so many half-circle tracks inVictoria but both city tracks are two-turn. BELOW: With SeriousHondo his first Albion Park winnersince his kidney transplant.Owen EdmondsGreyhoundsBACK in July, Barry and Sharon Morrishad 22 greyhounds on their property.A 2.10am phone call, a call that came threeyears earlier than expected, changed all that. The Morrises have been amongQueensland leading greyhound identities fora couple of decades now, always with a highclass dog or two, and among the nicest peoplethis industry has.But nine years ago Barry was diagnosedwith chronic kidney failure and from that timehis health has gone down hill.In May 2006 he went on dialysis and hisname was placed on a ever-lengthening listof people needing a replacement kidney. He was told it would be four years at bestbefore a suitable kidney came up. He andSharon went about their greyhound trainingduties with the success and devotion they havealways had.Until that 2.10am phone call on July 16came and shook them up for the next coupleof months.“It was the PA Hospital,” said Barry. “Atfirst they tried to ring on the mobile phonebut we were too slick for them, we had itturned off at that time of the morning.“But they rang the home phone and said aperfect match kidney had been found and Ihad to get to the hospital immediate.”An hour and a half later Barry was beingprepared for surgery. With the new kidney in place, Barry wasconfined to hospital for seven days, but forthe next five weeks he and Sharon had tomove into a unit near the hospital because heneeded a daily check-up.“I had to go in a 7am every day to makesure the kidney was not rejected,” he said.In the meantime, the greyhound racingfraternity came running and moved all 22 dogsfrom the Morris property at Lowood.“Our daughter Tracy came down for thefirst week to look after those that were in theprocess of being moved,” said Barry. “Ninewent to George Zammits, the racing dogs wentto other trainers and we made otherarrangements for the rest.”Fast forward to today and Barry andSharon again have 18 dogs on their property.“We have been 25 years non-stop ingreyhound racing and it was nice to have aBarry, and histeam, buildupagain‘holiday’, if you can call it that,” said Barryof the almost two months away from racing. He’s on 25 pills a day “more tablets someof those footballers” but says he’s living anormal life.“The doctors call it a treatment not acure,” he said. “The tablet numbers willdecrease as time goes on, but some I’ll haveto take forever.“But it has shown Sharon and I that weneed to have a break from the daily routineof greyhound racing and we will endeavourto do that every year at least for a couple ofweeks,” he said.In the meantime they have, as usual, somesmart dogs coming through.“One is by our great old race dog TotallySerious-Coonowrin Red and a brother to thosetwo of Ray Gatti’s that show so muchpotential,” said Barry.“He was ready to start when all this blewup and it will be a while to get him back tohis top again.”But Barry and Sharon aren’t complainingabout the interruption. Pictures courtesyLisa VanderstokFirsts all aroundCARNAGE Maker is a special greyhound, just ask the Hazelgroves, Reg,Noela and son Brett. And when he led throughout to win the recent Group 2 Lismore Cup, heproved that once again. Carnage Maker (Carnage-Midnight Fever) is the firstGroup winner for the kennel in 35 years in the industry."He's a special greyhound alright," said Noela. "In fact, he's the bestnatured dog we've ever had in all those years in the industry. We can't helpbut spoil him."He is only the second Lismore Cup finalist for the Hazelgroves who preparedCyclone Chrissy to make the final a few years ago only to see her chances slipaway after being checked at the start."Reg knew this dog would be suited by the Lismore track and that's whyhe went four weeks in a row to get him used to it," said Noela. "And it worked."Carnage Maker has added to his great record having already won the timehonouredEric Thomson Memorial Maiden at the Gold Coast. He was bred by Brett and is raced by a syndicate of mostly first-time ownersin the Winning Ways Syndicate. They are: John, Anthony and ChrisMontegomery, Mick Jensen, Bruce Fullerton and Terry Bloomer.Reg Hazelgrove was ever aware of the presence of Bogie Blaze in the final, but was confident if his dog could lead, as expected, he would be hard to rundown. MY dad Perc came up in the hardschool when great trials, fast times andhot young pups were the secret of the day.But back in the 1970s our kennel hada leak and dad and I went to great painsto plug that leak.Somehow the smarties were findingout about our dogs' trials and it went onfor months and months.Dad and I had a great chat about itand decided we needed to find the leakand find it fast. It was costing us plenty.Dad was ready to turn his full forceagainst everyone. Our first targets were my mum, andthen my wife Jeanette.Dad said we just had to hold them out… tellem nuthin. When the leak was still not plugged, the old man turned on me.He wanted to know if I was talking tothe footballers at Redcliffe Leagues Club.I knew that wasn’t happening andconvinced dad of it.Next he turned to the then lure driverat Lawnton. Much to my disgust, he evenfronted the lure driver who vehementlydenied it.But dad wasn’t convinced … there wasno one left to accuse.BUT, we finally found out that dad washis own worst enemy. He would love nothing better thanheading to our local muscleman with thedogs each week. And it was dad who was telling themuscleman what times the dogs wererunning, when they would be starting etcetc. The muscleman was then tipping to thesmarties and they were knocking off ourprices every time we thought we had awinner.Mum and Jeanette could finally comein out of the cold, suspicion finally cameoff me, and there was no guiltier personthan Perc Norris about his accusations tothe then Lawnton lure driver. He never got over making thataccusation. I even apologized to theperson myself some years later. One of dad’s greatest thrills ingreyhound racing was the day he “gotunder” one for a mate of his at Capalabain the 50s.Dad and I were winning plenty ofraces at the time.As anyone with a dog on the end of acollar and lead will know, when you arewinning lots and lots of races, your rivalswill immediately want to know “what areyou giving them”.That certainly was the case with aformer Air Force mate of dads.No matter how many times we told thisguy we would NEVER use anything onour dogs other than good tucker and goodpreparation, he would not listen. For months he would pester dad forour “secret recipe”. Perc would ignorehim but with every week, the requestswould continue so finally dad got sick andtired of it.He went to our local chemist andGreyhound DataGreyhound breeders should be aware ofthe value of the fantastic websiteproduced by Gunnar von Boehn inStuttgart, Germany. The site can be accessed viawww.greyhound-data.comIt's well worth a look for theinformation available. The best of its kind.Syd Norrisasked for a small capsule.Dad went home and filled it with icingsugar and promptly arrived at Capalabathe following race meeting. His mate’s dog was just getting fit. Heneeded a few runs. But by the time dad produced the icingsugar “hit”, the dog was right at his peakand ready to win.Dad even went through the process ofinforming the guy how he had to give thedog the “hit”.Along came the race and the dogbolted in. The look on dad’s face couldonly be topped by the look on the face ofthe trainer. For years after that dad and I tried to137JohnstonStreet,Casino,NSW2470Ph (02)66622162Fax (02)66625602MemoriesOur erstwhilecolumnist Syd'Knocka' Norrisnever misses anopportunity forsome personalpublicity. There was no way anyone couldconvince him.I’ve been eating icing sugar for yearsand never felt as good as that dog did atCapalaba back in the 50s.Dad was a great judge of greyhounds, and I know some others who have beenjust as good, and others who weren’t.Dave Palmer, in one instance, wasamong the others.Dave and his right-hand man KevinEllis were among the best in the industryfor years. My neighbours Hedley Petersen andGary Read, owned a little bitch calledKensington Way and Dave made one ofNorthern Rivers Veterinary ServiceScott Brown BVSc (Hons)his regular brash statements about thebitch.“She will NEVER win at Capalaba, she will NEVER win at the Gold Coast, she will NEVER win at Albion Park,” wasDave’s boast.Kensington Way won four out of fourat Capalaba, four out of five at the GoldCoast and won four at Albion Park and 18races in all.One morning at Dave’s straight track,he declared her in a race at Albion Parklater in the week. Dave told me he wouldhave $1000 on the bitch.Normally Kevin would handle all thedogs, but this day Dave was left with thejob. While being loaded into the van for thetrip to Albion Park the bitch slipped hercollar and bolted up and down thestraight, around the paddocks and arrivedback at Dave’s side panting and with hertongue on the ground.Hedley and Gary would always waitfor Dave to come down from Silks to givethem the nod to back the bitch at AlbionPark. There was no way Dave was beingseen, embarrassed about the bitch slippingthe collar at home and ruining herchances for the night.Kensington Way bolted in at 6-1,Hedley, Gary and all their relations wereon her big time.Dave sat up in Silks and sulked.Liz Brown BVSc (Hons)* Camelot Farms accredited* Reliable friendly service from an experienced team* Reliable weekly transport service by Renzo Park and PTS* Large semen storage bank* Excellent pregnancy rate and litter size* Stud dog semen collection, evaluation and storage* Air-conditioned kennels* In-house progesterone and T4 testing* Price (frozen semen insemination)$484 all inclusive (includes GRA registration)The (October, 2007) Journal Page 29

So, the closelybred bitches produced well when bothoutcrossed and when put back to the sameblood.Athol Hodges died in 1992 aged 80.His son Bernard was his right hand man.He lives on the NSW coast and still pines forthe glory days of the Hodges greyhoundbreed.“We lived in Mudgee and had 80 acresand our own slaughter house and butcher shopso the finest food went into thosegreyhounds,” said Bernard.Bernard remembers his dad having topclass greyhounds racing around Harold Parkin the pre-War days.“When the War broke out he gave up thedogs because it was too hard in those toughtimes to look after them properly,” saidBernard.“But by the early 1960s he was keen toget back in. Mum bought a couple of dogscalled Greys Linen and Linney Lane for dadand away we went.”Eric Johnson was a great friend of thefamily and he sold Athol the bitch Ellen’sLane, a close relation to the previous two.Ellen’s Lane (Amazing Chief-China Lane)was a high class broodbitch. To Black Top she threw Daisy Lane andPolly Lane (NSW Country Championship). To Hot Top she got Mickey Lane (top gradeSydney sprinter), Miss Lane (NationalFuturity), Ellen’s Fury and Madam Lane.To Bandar Prince she threw El Caballero(15 wins including six at Wentworth Park). From the third litter, to Spotted Lightning, came Thunder Lane, Ellen’s Lightning andNo Kerbing.“Phillip Davis, who has been a great friendfor many years and a long-time greyhoundvet in Sydney, came to our property one dayand asked dad what his best greyhound was,”said Bernard.“Dad took him to a paddock and pointedto a 10 months old white and black dog, andsaid ‘that’s the best’.“It was Thunder Lane.”Thunder Lane (found three times up closein the pedigree of Acacia Ablaze) broke theBathurst track record at his first trial. “By thetime we had got home from that trial, dad hadreceived five phone calls to buy him.”Thunder Lane ran fifth in the NationalDerby to Roman Earl after entering the seriesas a maiden and winning a semi-final.He ran third as odds-on favourite in theMelbourne Cup (to Cheltenham Lass) andthen ran a tick off the Wentworth Park trackrecord a week later. He had a victory over Roman Earl whowas then regarded as a superstar of the time. The Hodges stood him for a while at theirMudgee property before sending him off toChina Lady before her timeAthol Hodges withFire Lane. The third dam of Ellen’s Lane was Yankee Miss who was the dam of China Ladyone of the greatest greyhounds of her era. In June 1948, China Lady ran a trackrecord 26.8 seconds over the 500yds at Harold Park.In November that year she further reduced the record down to an amazing 26.5secs. This time was later equalled by Macareena (in 1953), Plunkett’s Pride (twice in1954) and Top Linen in 1957, before the latter finally broke it in April 1958.To show her versatility, China Lady also ran a record over 790yds at WentworthPark in March 1950.China Lady appeared in the damline of some smart performers. She was the granddamof Togarra (1959 Lady Mayoress’ Tphy at Wentworth Park); third dam of Jet Vin;the fourth dam of Whisk; the fifth dam of Edenville King, Glinell Mouse and BrotherBee; the sixth dam of Sam Spur and Pearl’s Pride. The (October, 2007) Journal Page 30

Spotlight on BreedingFrank Holmes for stud. Holmes stood BlackTop.With the success of Thunder Lane andother of Ellen’s Lane’s progeny, Athol decidedto heavily in-breed the line.He put Thunder Lane (Spotted Lightning-Ellen’s Lane) over his half sister Madam Lane(Hot Top-Ellen’s Lane) and came up withLady Thunder.Lady Thunder would become, as we said,an outstanding broodbitch but first she earnedherself a reputation on the racetrack. She wasrunner-up in the 1971 National Futurity anda finalist in the Australian Cup.Bernard remembers Lady Thunder like itwas yesterday.“The whole litter was so timid but she wasvery, very timid,” he said. “But she was oneof the fastest greyhounds we ever had.“I remember she was so timid that onenight at Richmond she would not even walkonto the track. I got permission from thestewards to carry her onto the track.“But once she was there, she was allbusiness and a very fast greyhound.“She ran a couple of track records frommemory and won plenty of city races.“But she was the most timid greyhoundI’ve ever seen.”Around this time the Hodges also bredNewmore Lane (Newmore King*-NellieThunder by Thunder Lane).“He was a superstar,” said Bernard.“When he was young, every track we put himon to trial he broke the track record. As if Lady Thunder (the mating of halfbrother to half sister) wasn’t in-bred enough, the Hodges put her to a dog called Fire Lane(a son of Thunder Lane) and she produced abitch called Velvet Fire and the brilliant NSWcountry sprinter Hot Rumble. When it came time to mate Velvet Fire, she went to Newmore Lane, who we havealready seen carried Thunder Lane as hisdamsire. One of the pups raced as Kerry Velvet. The litter thus had Thunder Lane 3x3x3, andhis dam Ellen’s Lane 4x4x4x4.Kerry Velvet, as we have mentioned, wonthe Champagne Stakes at Wentworth Park inbrilliant time. As a broodbitch Kerry Velvetleft the brilliant Sydney sprinter Cassilis Kidand Lady Anarchy (Wyong Oaks). Her line is still producing today withJunoesque the perfect example. The 2005 Potential Stakes winner Mozillais by Elite State-Junoesque, the dam alsoproducing Infinite Beauty (WP MegaMaiden) and Token Chimes (Nowra Oaks). This is also the line of Bazwill (DaptoPuppy Classic) and top Sydney stayer I LoveLucy.“At the time we were breeding between200 and 300 pups every year,” said Bernard.“We sold a lot of them. It was a gift he had.“As I said, he picked out Thunder Lanefrom a very early age. It was a gift that henever told us about or passed onto us.”By the 1980s, Athol was into his 70s andhis sons and daughter were looking to havefamilies, build businesses etc, so greyhoundracing scaled down on the Mudgee property.“We exported some to the US and theywere relatively successful,” said Bernard.“The in-breeding experiment was done overa few years and we didn’t continue with it.As everyone knows, you must put speed tospeed and with in-breeding, while you willalways double-up on the good genes, you alsodouble-up on the bad genes.”Athol still had a dozen dogs in trainingwith locals at the time of his death.Bernard is 65 and two years ago was toldhe had cancer and had just six months to live.He beat it.“I miss greyhound racing,” he said. “Iby David BraschNewmore King*Nellie ThunderFire LaneLady ThunderNewdown HeatherWondermoreThunder LaneNellie MossThunder LaneFire PowerThunder LaneMadam LaneAthol Hodges with hisdogs in 1938.Printer’s PrincePardeePigalle WonderMore CoinsSpotted LightningEllen’s LaneMagic BabeMaggie MossSpotted LightningEllen’s LaneFire BanCoragladeSpotted LightningEllen’s LaneHot TopEllen’s Laneoften thought about getting a dog or two andstill might.“I had to give up because I got married, brought up a family and developed and grewthe butcher shops. Logan: A Perfect HomeIt is fantastic news to hear there is interestfrom the Logan City Council about having agreyhound track within its borders. For a long time many within the industryhave been crying out for a track in the Loganarea and it was also the most popularprospective location for a new track in theQGBOTA survey earlier in the year. The swell of popular opinion now seemsto be synchronising with views shared by theGRAQ and Logan City Council.Hopefully the planets are finally aligningfor Queensland greyhound racing and we canforge a new era for our sport. The QGBOTA actively supports anymoves towards a greyhound track in Loganand we consider it the correct path ourindustry must take to insure its future. The ideal greyhound facilityI have written an article on the idealgreyhound facility, drawing upon thefeedback from the industry from the surveythe QGBOTA conducted on Albion Park andwhat participants want from a new track. This article can be read in the latest issueof our newsletter, which can be found at tracksor on our website. I hope the industry finds itat the least thought provoking. It covers not only discussion on designbut also topics such as promotion, entertainment and business ventures. It highlights the industry’s desire for boththe ideal racing venue but also the idealtraining and support facility. We encourage owners and trainers to writeto the QGBOTA or The Journal to give theirown thoughts and ideas on this issue. With the Gold Coast track to be relocatedand Albion Park either being redeveloped orrelocated, it is vital that we give this issue alot of thought.GRAQ Board MeetingThe QGBOTA attended the latest GRAQboard meeting.POSTMAN'S RIDGEGreyhound ComplexTrialling Daily(Closed Tues & Wed)Winter (May 1- Sept 30) 7.30am to 9amSummer (Oct 1 - April 30) 7am to 9amContact John and Sharyn Collins0437 789076 or 0408 789076Ph (07) 46303688Corey PearcePhotographyBrad NewmanGBOTA NewsThe QGBOTA was represented by myselfand Kevin Galloway. Issues we addressedinclude the future of Albion Park, therelocation of the Gold Coast track, the horseflu and governance.A lot of these issues will no doubt becovered in more detail and depth by theGRAQ in this publication, but we came awayfrom the meeting being very satisfied withprogress. While the Albion Park issue still remainsat a status quo, at least publicly, our main topicof discussion was the future of the Gold Coasttrack with the State Government taking theland for their future Gold Coast hospital.Moving inside the harness track isn’t anoption and with genuine interest from theLogan City Council on having a greyhoundtrack, a greyhound facility in Logan is adistinct possibility. The GRAQ has been shown land thatwould be more than adequate to house agreyhound facility but with plenty of roomfor other sports. This would please many who believe anynew greyhound track should be a multi usefacility to make it more viable and to attract adiverse cliental. The GRAQ hopes it can extract somecompensation from the State Government anduse these funds to build new facilities inLogan. On the subject of the horse flu, while theSaturday meetings at Albion Park have beena fun novelty and a great success, (we need areturn of a Saturday night meeting in QLD)the greyhound industry is really feeling thepinch of the crisis. With our income tied to a share of theoverall turnover of all racing, the absence ofthese horse meetings is hurting us.While Queensland horse racing is shutdown, Queensland greyhounds race on, butwe also carry the burden of paying out fullprizemoney, plus the Saturday meetings whilestill being drained by the crisis. The soonerthis is over the better for all.The draft governance for theincorporation of the GRAQ has been finalizedand the QGBOTA is satisfied with the results.Feedback was supplied by all race clubs andour Association and we feel these concernshave been taken on board. The governance has now been submittedto the State Government for approval andthere shouldn’t be any hold up.The GRAQ, which is currently a statutorybody, will incorporate into a new entity to beknown as Greyhounds Queensland in themiddle of next year. This governance isactually the constitution of the new entity.A full report of our meeting with theGRAQ can be found in the September issueof our newsletter.I would like to thank the GRAQ for onceagain extending their courtesy towards us inallowing us to attend the early Septemberboard meeting.Capalaba Trial DiscountRemember that QGBOTA membersreceive $1 off trials at Capalaba whenpresenting their membership card.Anyone interested in saving some moneyon trialing who isn’t a member, I invite youto join the QGBOTA.MembershipMembership forms are available on ourwebsite QGBOTA.com, in our monthlynewsletter, at our weekly BBQ at Albion Parkon Fridays or by contacting a committeemember.
