Darren BeavisTHE introduction of SMS race informationto trainers has been such a success that wehave now included owners. It worked exceptionally well recently whenthe Gold Coast meeting had to be abandonedbecause of wet weather and the majority oftrainers could be notified through their mobilephones. If we have your mobile phone numberrecorded on our database, we will utilise thisinformation to send you any relevant detailsof your dogs racing etc.If you do not require this service, pleasecontact the GRA.We will look to extend this service toinclude trainers who have a greyhound as areserve and which gains a start through ascratching.AT time of writing a report into thereplacement of the Gold Coast track with aLogan City complex has just been completed. This will incorporate what will be neededat the new complex to replace the existinggreyhound racing infrastructure at the GoldCoast.General ManagerDanny RyanChairman of StewardsFollowing a post out to all licensees inQueensland, you should by now have yournew Rule Book which is effective January1.You should most certainly read thisbook carefully as there are number ofsubtle changes to rules in various areas.Unfortunately, most people do not checktheir rules and have little interest until therules apply to you, and then you haveproblems and do not agree with them.Should for some reason you do not haveone, contact the offices of the GRA andrequest a book or collect one at yourespective club. The failure of people to carry out theirobligations with regard to completetransfer of a greyhound’s ownership orsimply a change of kennel can cause agreat deal of unnecessary hardship tothose concerned. It is your obligation to immediatelynotify the GRA should a greyhound leave orjoin your kennels. R105 (4)I raise an important issue with regardto greyhounds having to be put down forwhatever reason. We will now be taking this report to therelevant State Government departments whichinclude the Department of Health andDepartment of Infrastructure.Racing Minister Andrew Fraser will alsobe provided a copy of the report. The report has been prepared by suitablyqualified engineers, architects and quantitysurveyors. It is very detailed and takes ingrandstand, racetrack, kennels, car parkingetc. At this stage we cannot give a time frameof when works will start due to the need forfurther discussions with the relative stategovernment departments.BY this time all owners and trainers willhave a copy of the new Rule Book which cameinto effect by January 1.I encourage all owners and trainers to readthroughout these rules and be well aware ofyour obligations. If anyone else would require a copy, contact the GRA offices. There is also a PDF copy on the GRA’swebsite under forms to download.Should this be as a result of a racingincident or illness, you as a trainer shouldhave a CLEAR AGREEMENT WITH THEOWNER OF THE GREYHOUND as to theirinvolvement should this decision need to bemade in an emergency situation.Your actions will be questioned bystewards.Golden ViewGreyhoundComplex1169 Atkinsons Dam RoadAtkinsons DamWITH thoroughbred and harness racinggetting back on track from December 1, theon-flow of turnover to greyhound racing willhelp in the coming months. The Board will review the payment ofunplaced prizemoney at its February meeting. We will by then have December andJanuary turnover figures to guide us on adecision about unplaced prizemoney.Early indication is that turnover hasreturned to pre-EI levels.ClarificationGreyhounds Australasia (GA) hasclarified its position in relation to theendorsement of further improvements todrug testing protocols for AustralianGreyhound Controlling Bodies.Greyhounds Australasia ChiefExecutive Officer, Mr Craig Tabernersaid: “All sports face significantchallenges in dealing with the illicit use ofdrugs."In our case, continuous improvementsin drug testing machinery, analyses andprocesses are designed to maintaingreyhound racings integrity andtransparency and to ensure thatgreyhounds compete on a level playingfield.“All Controlling Bodies atGreyhounds Australasia’s Novembermeeting confirmed that they do notendorse the use of anabolic steroids ingreyhound racing."They did however agree that anamendment be made to the definition ofdrugs by excluding 'Ethyloestrenol' whenadministered orally to greyhound bitchesand where it has been prescribed by aveterinary surgeon for the sole purpose ofregulating or preventing oestrus, effectiveMarch 1st 2008,” Taberner said.Break-ins$60 per weekRearing$30 per week* Breaking-in * Rearing* Spelling * Public Trialling(Trials Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon, Tues. Wed appointment only)(07) 54264227Contact:Alan and Casey DarguschAGVA dispelmyths on newdrug protocolsBy Dr Ray FergusonALL sports face a significant challengein keeping out performance enhancingdrugs and the recent announcement byGreyhounds Australasia endorsingimproved drug testing is a positive step.It is shared by many vets to ensure thecode maintains credibility. While debate may be occurring fromsome participants on the matter, it isimportant to recognise greyhound racingneeds to keep pace with drug testingprotocols. The Australian Greyhound VeterinaryAssociation (AGVA) is an associated bodyof vets with a special interest ingreyhounds and it has more than 100members throughout Australasia. The AGVA provides advice to othervets on the treatment of greyhounds andhelps advise greyhound racing bodies onwelfare policy. The AGVA’s role on this subject hasbeen to help GA and Controlling Bodieskeep pace with the changes to testingprotocols and maximise the opportunity fordetection, particularly for AnabolicSteroids. At the same time, GA also wanted tokeep bitches racing and sought advice onwhich products may be permissible to keepthem off season, continue to race and haveminimal performance enhancingcharacteristics. As a result, the AGVA reviewed thesituation and after months of investigationand sourcing feedback from variousmembers, the AGVA executiverecommended the use of “Ethyloestrenol”for racing bitches. When administered orally to greyhoundbitches, Ethyloestrenol regulates theirreproductive cycle.Ethyloestrenol was chosen becausethere is sufficient evidence to suggest itdoes not enhance a greyhound’sperformance and has minimal impact on thewelfare of the female greyhound. Also, there is evidence at theappropriate dose, Ethyloestrenol is a safedrug formulation and effective in regulatingthe reproductive cycle. The AGVA is not aware of any recordedcases where adverse effects have beenrecorded using Ethyloestrenol because ifreactions had occurred vets are obligatedto report them to the Australian Pesticidesand Veterinary Medicines Authority.Improvements to drug testingprotocols are in line with changes beingmade in other sports and racing codes soas to keep pace with the changing natureof drugs and their composition. The new testing protocols will bephased in to make sure the variouslaboratories have testing operational fromMarch 1.All sports face a significant challengein keeping out performance enhancingdrugs and these measures are designed tomaintain greyhound racing’s credibilityand ensure all greyhounds compete on alevel playing field. If participants have any concerns inthis area it is recommended they consulttheir vet.The (February, 2008) Journal Page 3

Lucky Alive andlittermate Pump It Up had been unplaced inthe Ipswich Gold Cup late last year. The dog is raced by Cole, his brother-inlawMark Muscat and former brother-in-lawKen Elleray. “I’m the friend,” said Ken.While Cole is down as the trainer and hedoes most of the work, “Nanny Fay” makessure everything is done around the kennels.“Nanny Fay” is Cole’s mum FaySherwood. The family has been in greyhoundracing as long as they can remember.Fay’s late husband Alan was as wellknown around Queensland greyhound tracksin the 1970s and 80s as the Gabba itself.Lucky Alive has to be among the bestnamed greyhounds racing. As a pup, Cole had him in the back of hisstation wagon while taking Carbrook trainerRex Marshall to Brisbane Airport. They were on the Gateway Arterial whenSilver squeezed through a gap above the carwindow and fell onto the roadway. He dodgeda couple of on-coming trucks. When Cole frantically coaxed him backacross the road and to the car, Silver againhad to dodge traffic on the busy roadway.“Lucky Alive” just had to be his racingname.“Silver” Malone would be impressed.Young Guns (457m)Gold Coast1 LUCKY ALIVE $6.50(Excite Ability-Split The Mist)Owners: Cole Sherwood, Mark Muscat,Ken Elleray.Trainer: Cole Sherwood.2 CANDY TIGER $4.20(Late Late Show-Tokay Tears)3 DISORDERLY $2.60(Whisky Assassin-Must Command)Others: 4 Silk Moon $5.40, 5 AtomicAttitude $18, 6 Lawvek $38, 7 SeriousDreams $11, 8 Mush Mush $22. His son Mathewdragged him back into the industry recentlyand Warren and his family have benefitedfrom that.Dennis sold the Kempshall family acouple of Go Wild Teddy-Twirly Girl bitcheswhich he reared for them on his Old Bonalboproperty and are now to be trained on theNorthern Rivers by Warren’s brother Col.Warren, 47, is back in greyhound racingafter a break of 15 years and is puttingtogether a small team on his acreage propertyjust outside Townsville.“I’m planning on coming down to theNorthern Rivers shortly and want to headout to Dennis’ property to have a look at histraining and rearing set-up,” said Warren.SyndicationopportunitiesContact usfor theopportunityto join insyndicatesto purchaserace dogs.Warren’s shift back into greyhoundracing has been headed by English Pirate, aRapid Journey dog he bought through theInternet. A shortcourser he has been greatfor Warren’s re-entry into the sport after 15years.He also has a couple of 14 month old pupsby Coal Fire, a brother to former stargalloper and now English-based stud dogDutchy’s Angel.“I’m really enjoying it again and my wifeMargie and kids Kade (11) and Brianna (nine)do as well,” he said.Warren was 16 and working and livingon his uncle’s cane farm in Ayr when he gothis first greyhound, even though he didn’thave a driver’s license to be able to take thedog to the track.“I got my first dog from Joe White whoraced Gardenvale Boy with such success inTownsville,” he said. “It was a bitch calledStatic Vision and she won one race.”Ken Francis, then a NSW GRA boardmember, sent Warren am Overflow Eagle dogpup and Phil Wode broke him in with greatreports. The dog broke a hock and never gotto the track.“I plodded along with a few giveawaysafter that,” said Warren. By 19 he was backin Townville and purchased a FFA dog fromAlbury. But the dog got sick and had to be putdown before he could make the trip toTownsville.“The people in Albury offered me a bitchcalled Lady Lancia who had not won in two orthree starts,” he said. She won five straightwhen she got to Townsville and became a topgrade galloper over 600m, winning her lastrace at five and a half years old.Warren won with a dog called Thor, abrother to Townsville champ Victory King, won 10 races with Like Short a giveaway fromNSW, and had success with dogs like MotorHead and Pumpkin Head. The latter was by Toss The Teddy-TrueLies and he made two Townsville Derby finals.Warren’s brother Col won a free service toToss The Teddy with True Lies and Warrengot Pumpkin Head from the litter. But like some do, Warren drifted out ofthe industry. Work commitments gave himno time to spend on greyhounds until justrecently when he and another brother, Stan, established a patio business. He and Margie have five acres at BlackRiver and Brianna is on hand every day tohelp around the kennels. The Kempshalls are back in greyhoundracing … and loving it.The (February, 2008) Journal Page 8

Terry Aukrum, Phil Jarvis andAlec Stevens with Strictly Bizness.Biznessmatesfind atop youngFOUR mates, drinking buddies, all keenon racing have been out for a bit of fun inrecent times but it’s Strictly Bizness.Which is the name of their highlypromising young dog, a son of BitabilityBale-Girl Diamond. Those mates are Terry Aukram, PhilGracie, Danny Slack and Terry Morrow.Terry was for eight years proprietor ofCapalaba Pet Food, Phil runs Evergreen,Danny the Browns Plains Motel and Terrythe Landsborough Pub.Since August 2007, Terry has been exportmanager for a kangaroo meat business in StGeorge 600km from Brisbane. So what are those four doing in greyhoundracing? They love it of course, and late in 2007when Strictly Bizness started racing, theyhead straight for Capalaba and the Gold Coastwhere their new found pride and joy has beenmaking a name for himself.Strictly Bizness landed the Ken SmithMemorial at Capalaba in style and trainerAlec Stevens, as president of the club, waspupfaced with the dilemma of presenting himselfand his owners with the trophy for the race.Phil, Danny and Terry are relativenewcomers into the industry, but Terry raceda dog called Mister Tiz some years ago.“I went through the very first trainerscourse put on by the GRA,” said Terry.“I trained Mister Tiz late in his careerand from the time he ran 23.56 to win hismaiden at the Tweed, he was always a handydog.“He won his last race as a five-year-oldand 13 races in all even though we never sawthe best of him.”As a regular sponsor at Capalaba, Terrydecided a little more than a year ago to buyanother pup.“I had been delivering meat to JohnEdwards for a while and wanted a pup out ofhis great broodbitch Girl Diamond,” saidTerry.“I bought this dog pup and saw him growup every week while delivering meat to John’sproperty.“John did a fantastic job on the pup’srearing. Every week I took along a sausageroll for the pup.”At first the syndicate was a partnershipbetween Terry and Phil, but Danny and TerryMorrow insisted they join up. Terry Morrowhas a couple of racehorses including the veryhandy Growser.Strictly Bizness joined the Stevenskennel when it became obvious Terry couldnot train his dog from St George.“He broke in well and they talked me intotaking him,” said Alec. “I don’t normallytrain for other people but I’ve known Terryfor a long time with his sponsorship of theclub.”Strictly Bizness won his Capalaba debutby eight and a half lengths. His victory in the Ken Smith Memorialwas done tough and with strength on the line.“He broke in exceptionally well at JohnMartin’s complex at Casino,” said Terry.“He’s showing a lot of promise.”Strictly Bizness is an Ipswich Auctiondog and Alec and his owners are aiming thatway with the 431m series run early in theyear now followed by the 520m series late inthe year.Terry loves the Girl Diamond line andhas long been a follower of the great Ellie’sDiamond, her best offspring and an IpswichGold Cup winner for John and Lil Edwards.“I’ve already put an order in for a pup outof Ellie’s Diamond,” said Terry. When Strictly Bizness wins, thesyndicate boys are there to cheer him on andcelebrate the success. Here’s plenty more to come with a doglike Strictly Bizness.Winner: * Dave Brett Memorial * Ipswich YoungGuns. The opportunity to match a perfectlysex balanced sire, line bred to the mostinfluential dams and damsires we haveseen, suitable to a number of bloodlinesthat have worked well with Go Wild Teddy,Head Honcho, Token Prince and Malawi’sPrince. Pinch Bar has a double of Malawi’sPrince, so linescompatible with himshould be quiteimportant ...JUST THE BESTbloodlines should be verycompatible. GoMakatam, Bralyn Meland Billion Boy are byGo Wild Teddy out ofJust The Best bitches.JTB crosses brilliantlywith Token Princedoubling up Bay RoadQueen and Amerigo Man producingBuckingham Chuck, Bluezella, Cool Effortetc.AWESOME ASSASSIN and LIGHT OFFIRE lines should go really well. AwesomeAssassin bitches clicked with Go WildTeddy to produce Satanic Miss and Told YaSo while Light of Fire bitches to Go WildTeddy produced Ten Tornados, Tamala Parkand Teddy Allfire.Awesome Assassin and Head Honcho alsocombined to give us Delta White Boy,Migrate, Path To Power and Proven Alias.Other Light of Fire lines have also workedwith Head Honcho to produce Black Anvil,Bothing, Lochinvar Jet and Panicked. And theAwesome Assassin/Malawi’s Prince cross hasbeen one of the best going round in recentyears with Collision, Modern Assassin,Awesome Machine, Runs House etc.Of particular interest regarding Pinch Bar'ssuitability to Awesome Assassin/Light Of Firelines would be the pedigrees of Black Enforcer,Knockabout Cher and Maureen Shirley.BLACK SHIRAZ has crossed well with HeadHoncho in a number of good performers inBig Wave Dave, Brandeen, In Flew Enza, RunThe Risk etc.And with Token Prince the likes of Bim BamBoom, Mandagery Man, Token Excuse etc. Andnot forgetting that Bombastic Shiraz was byBlack Shiraz out of a Malawi’s Prince bitch.Black Shiraz also has Buka Sunset (Malawi’sbrother) in his pedigree which will give someinteresting linebreeding.Bitches with SHINING CHARIOT in thereblood should suit Pinch Bar. Shining Chariothad an excellent litter to Newdown Sarah(containing Pacy Pearl, Soho Strip, Winlakeetc) who comes from the same Sabby’s Imagedamline as Pinch Bar.In addition his son Golden Currency hashad some daughters who have worked well withGo Wild Teddy to get top class progeny such asJinderra Flame and Bush Legend. AndShining Chariot's sister produced Light Of'PINCH BAR was headed to the top! The improvement in this dog from whenhe came into the kennels was simply unbelievable. He was one of the happiest dogsI have seen, his tail never stopped wagging.PINCH BAR is the strongest Go Wild Teddy dog I have raced and with thetimes he was running and the fact he was improving with every start, I have nodoubt he would have been a very competitive Group racing dog.'Pinch Bar's trainer TONY BRETTFire who appears to be very compatible withPinch Bar’s pedigree. There are just too manytop class dogs to list with Shining Chariot andMalawi’s Prince in their pedigree.A number of good Go Wild Teddy’s haveGROVE WHISPER in their pedigree’s such asTambray Gravy, Jinderra Flame, Teddy Allfireand Don Paco. Token Prince over bitchescontaining Grove Whisper produced EddieBeauchamp, Lord Monelli, Pure Burst etc.BARNEYS ALARM was another import whoclicked with Go Wild Teddy producing KhaliaKeroma, Still Shaking and Wild Black Rose. The outstanding brood Doll’s Me Mumis by Token Prince over a Barneys Alarmbitch while Gunnadoo Saint also has theselines. From a damline point of view, the OSTILEE line keeps bobbing up in a lot of goodGo Wild Teddy progeny ... WildlyContended, Ten Tornados, Tamala Park,Regal Jasper, Regal Ricky etc. Token Princealso combined well with Osti Lee producingBest Quoted, Last Quoted,Pure Octane, Smart AndSassy etc. This suggestsBrett Lee bitches shouldwork well with Pinch Bar asBrett Lee produced LauriesBanner and Give Me Five toToken Prince bitches,Collide, Arvo’s Athena andOverflow to bitchescontaining Malawi’s Princeand Superman, Meticulous,Trewly Special and StrikeAttack to those with HeadHoncho. PINCH BAR has a Malawi’s Princedouble and also comes from the sameSabby’s Image damline which wouldsuggest linebreeding to BAY ROADQUEEN which has produced outstandingresults in the past. Linebreeding to DELBAIRN BABE or VAL MATESE (throughGolden Currency). The opportunity tocombine Pinch Bar's temperament, strength, speed and field sense he showedin his short career, matched to his pedigreeof proven nicks, makes him an ideal choicefor your brood. The (February, 2008) Journal Page 9

ALBION Park raceway is losing $1 milliona year and neither the greyhound nor harnessindustry can sustain such losses even at aredeveloped complex. That is the opinion of Brisbane Clubgeneral manager Luke Gatehouse who seesno future for greyhound racing at the site.“The business model at Albion Park is allwrong,” said Gatehouse who has been behinda dramatic turnaround of industry confidenceat the club, turnover increases, patronagerises and function business success.“Just look at the set-up at Albion Park. There are six CEOs, one each for thegreyhound and harness regulatory bodies, one each for the race clubs, one for theraceway management and a sixth for thecatering company.“All six have their own business goalsand more often than not, they are not alwaysin alignment.”The Brisbane Club receives $4.7 millionWITH greyhound racing all abuzz about the prospective development of a glamour new racetrack at Logan City, talk also swings tojust what will happen at Albion Park. Brisbane club president Michael Byrne has already made his thoughts well known that he and hisclub no longer want to stay at the site. The complex is half owned by the Greyhound Racing Authority and the Harness Board andredevelopment plans have been on the drawing board for the past year or so. The Harness Board is all for the redevelopment. There is nothing in it for the greyhound racing industry. The possibility to grow our industry is virtually nil once the Albion Parkredevelopment in completed. All greyhound racing is behind the move to our own complex. Journal Editor, DAVID BRASCH, spoke toBrisbane Club general manager Luke Gatehouse about his views on Logan City and the possibility of staying at Albion Park.each year to conduct a business and run threerace meetings each week.“Wherever we look to grow our businessit is almost impossible,” said Gatehouse.“The only benefits we get are from ourUniTAB on-course tote turnover andfunctions which we have been runningourselves from the one room, the committeeroom.“Any revenue that is brought in throughthe restaurant, on-course use of the complex,we get nothing from that.”RACEREveryday Performance Food For GreyhoundsHaving been involved in greyhounds for over twenty years, with thepast seven of those as a professional trainer. I've found that greyhoundsneed consistency in their diet. With a lot of the big name brands ofkibble rising in price. We were losing a lot of kibble that had turned todust. And after soaking a lot of kibbles just turn to mush.I was just not getting the consistency I was after. We gave "Enduro Racer" a try, containing 8% fat and a high proteinlevel we found it to be just the right combination we were looking for. Itsoaked up a lot of water without turning to mush. The dogs liked thetaste and my greyhounds are racing as well as they ever have. With "Black Enforcer" winning the Group 1 "Topgun", Australia'srichest one out race, "Quidame" running 34.79 seconds, the secondfastest time over the 600 metres at Albion Park, I am only too happy torecommend Enduro Racer as a great kibble for the racing greyhound.Tony BrettChampion Trainer Tony Brett is a proud member of the Enduro Racing TeamFOR THE ULTIMATE CHAMPION RACING DOG, FEED ENDURO RACEREnduro Racer is a complete and optimally balanced maintenance Formula targeted at providing a nutritious dietfor racing greyhounds. Enduro Racer provides the greyhound with a total nutritional package helping it towithstand the rigors of training and racing regime.Enduro Racer is comprised of a blend of cereals giving a mixture of carbohydrates. These carbohydrates willgive the animal a controlled release of energy. This is particularly important, as greyhounds require a short burstof energy during racing. The release of the energy in this recipe is controlled by ensuring the animal consumesslow release carbohydrates such as the starch from the grain in the kibble.Enduro Racer contains real chicken ensuring the product has a very high palatability. A blend of speciallyselected beef and poultry proteins provides the perfect amount of amino acids for muscle development andgrowth. The polyunsaturated vegetable oil in the product promotes a healthy skin and coat.Enduro Racer has balanced calcium and phosphorous levels for maintaining strong bones and teeth and is avitamin and mineral enriched formula ensuring the greyhound receives all the vitamins and minerals needed tomaintain its peak condition.Trade enquiries please call Keri on 0427 701 045or Email feedwellstockfeeds@yahoo.com.au100% Australian Made and OwnedIt is no secret the Albion Park Raceway islosing $1 million each year a loss of which alittle more than 50 percent is made up bydepreciation, but one that needs to be met byboth the Greyhound and Harness Boards.“It shows you then with this loss of $1million that the business model at Albion Parkin not working,” said Gatehouse. “Just howlong can we sustain this $1 million loss?”Gatehouse is skeptical of the worth of anyAlbion Park redevelopment.Among the plans are to sell off a 4ha area,The (February, 2008) Journal Page 10at the front of the complex nearest to theBreakfast Creek Hotel, to developers.Monies raised from this sale would thengo to re-building the greyhound and harnesstracks, kennels and stables, and a grandstandat the back of the current property, as well asrelocate the Racing Science Centre.Gatehouse says that while he is not awareof any agreement within the redevelopment,he asks what, if any, income would come tothe greyhound and harness industries thatrace there five times a week.“Or is it just going to give us what wealready have but in a different area of thecomplex,” asked Gatehouse. “Same dunny …different door.“If we perpetuate an existing poorbusiness model, then we will continue withthe same poor result.”Gatehouse believes greyhound andharness racing are just not suited to a jointpartnership or a joint complex. “We are notcompatible.“In February this year we have been atAlbion Park for 15 years,” he said. “We haveentirely different needs and interests.“There is enough internal politics amongthe three racing codes without our own. Lookat what has transpired between Eagle Farmand Doomben. And 73 percent of Doombenmembers want to merge the two clubs.”He said greyhound racing was a highvolume business and a single business model.“Our tracks are suitable for high volumeoperations,” he said.“Since we converted most tracks fromgrass to loam we have been able to use ourtracks as often as possible.“We are set up to run a high volumeoperation and our facilities are the same. Thisclub could race five times a week, if we havetwo tracks … just like that suggested at LoganCity.“But this is not achievable when we haveto share the complex with a harness club. It isdefeating our entire business purpose,” hesaid. There has been much speculation overjust what the Albion Park complex is worthon the real estate market.Late in 2007 a 5600 square metre blockacross the road from Albion Park was sold for$11 million.“So what does that make Albion Parkworth?,” said Gatehouse. “By my calculationsit is worth about $225 million give or take afew million.“It is prime inner city real estate. And justtry and buy prime inner city real estate theseRules of greyhound racingA review of the rules has been undertakenby all Greyhounds Australasia member bodiesand legal advice obtained on the new rules. ADraft copy of the rules was advertised forindustry consultation. The Board has now approved the ruleswhich incorporate Greyhound's Australasiaand Queensland Local Rules. The new rules came into operation onJanuary 1.A copy of the rules will be posted toregistered/licensed persons (one perhousehold).Copies of the rulebook will are availableat the Authority.

With a $1m loss each year, and little prospect of aturnaround, the only option is to ...Sell Albion Parkdays. There is none.“The developers know that.”But as Gatehouse points out, in terms ofany redevelopment, greyhound racing doesnot end up with anywhere near $112 million, its half of the worth of the complex.“Albion has been pinpointed as one ofthis city’s prime development areas, and theBrisbane City Council has already said it doesnot want the racing complex to stay,” he said. The Brisbane Club received considerable“flak” some time ago when asked by theHarness Club to be part of a proposedlicensed club development at Albion Park.“We have not yet seen a business case toprove it would be viable to open a licensedclub at Albion Park. On the contrary, we havea few harsh facts and figures about the riseand fall of these clubs around town,” saidGatehouse. It has recently been mooted theBookmakers Club would relocate from its citypremises (tipped to be sold) to an area in thegrandstand at Albion Park.“The club has been going broke for ages,”said Gatehouse. “So what says it will be asuccess by coming to Albion Park?”Licensed clubs draw the majority of theircustomers from a base within a 5km radius oftheir site. “Now look at the population within5km of Albion Park,” said Gatehouse.“The millionaires and upper market youngpeople of Ascot, Clayfield, Teneriffe etc donot come and play pokies. Crowds on Thursday nights are on therise. On-course tote is up 22 percent comparedto the previous 12 months,” he said.“Betting on big race nights is up. Breedersget SeriousEVEN his greatest fans Col Belland Barry Morris were not preparedfor the response to the initial successat stud of their iron dog TotallySerious. The son of Ashigga-O’Shantiwent to stud after a great career, onethat included 33 wins, 20 of thosearound Albion Park.He also won seven at Ipswich, three at Capalaba, two at Tweed andone at the Gold Coast and raced allhis career without injury … or noneworth talking about. When Totally Serious retired, Colwanted to get him started so he gotthe handy Albion Park performerShe’s Travelling and put her to him.A free service won at Bundabergwas used by veteran dog man RayGatti. And from those two litters havecome some outstanding youngsters, winners already from 380m to630m.He’s got the classy Bosanova Bluea 30.29 winner at Albion Park, andonly recently four of his progeny wonat Ipswich on the one night. Thatfrom just two litters to race.In response to that, inquiries havecome thick and fast for matings toTotally Serious. Breeders as faraway as Tasmania and NewZealand have chased frozen semenfrom the dog.Among the bitches to go to himinclude Ipswich greyhound of theyear Pure Torque and Col recentlygot the eight-time Albion Park winnerCrossword Lizzy for him. She hasjust whelped 12 pups.Totally Serious’ third litter bornare now just 12 months old.“If you are looking for tough, sound and honest dogs, then TotallySerious is the way to go,” said ColBell who admits to being just a littlebiased.By DAVID BRASCHTHEY say you had to be at the Gold Coastthe day American Zepha won first up in a401m Maiden. To see owner-trainer Josh Allen, wifeKathy, their kids Ben, Matt and Meg, and theswarm of family and friends was somethingto behold.Even Tony Brett got excited. That’s because American Zepha (WWApple Jax-Watusi Zepha) is the first dog Joshhas trained and he’s been waiting for thismoment since he was 10 when he was touchedby the greyhound Gods and became hookedon the sport.“I’ve never been more excited in my life,”said Josh.“Standing behind the boxes, I could hearmy wife Kathy cheering her on down thestraight. It was something.”That something has been 22 years in theplanning.Josh’s uncle is George Allen, who withwife Claudia, had been one of the most astutegreyhound men in Sydney for a couple ofdecades before he moved to the Gold Coastin a bid to lower his golf handicap and keephis hand in with a dog or two.Josh was 10 when his mum and dad Kateand Jim headed from Roma (Greg Brennanterritory) in outback Queensland to Sydneyfor a couple of weeks holiday staying withGeorge and Claudia.“It was just before George and Claudiagot Railway Road and Warragul Road,” saidJosh. “But they had dogs in training like LadyAnnaleith and I got to walk her every day.“I absolutely fell in love withgreyhounds.”Lady Annaleith might not have known it,but she unearthed a passion for the sport inJosh that burns brighter today.“I always kept in touch with George andAmerican Zepha and her fan club ... JoshAllen and his kids Ben, Matt and Meg.Claudia after that, having $2 each way theirdogs.”By the time Josh was 17, his puntingexploits thrived just as George and Claudiaproduced big race stars Railway Road andWarragul Road.“I backed Warragul Road in a big race atWentworth Park when he beat Tenthill Dolland paid $66,” he said.Josh was marking time by then. He justhad to have a greyhound.“It just wasn’t feasible to have a dog outin Roma.”Fate stepped in about five years ago. Joshwas already married to Kathy and workingfor Centrelink in Roma.“I went to Brisbane for a holiday and uncleGeorge took me to Albion Park for the firsttime,” he said. “I got to meet Tony Brett andhe happened to have Bogie Leigh racing thatnight.GoodLuckfor theFinalGirls!Stud Fee $2800(to assist breeders forinsemination costs)Whisky'sYoungsters makeGroup 1 Adelaide Cup finalBULLETPROOF GIRL ex Al FrescoBeat seasoned performer Train A Journey by 2.5 lengths in 29.73.Led early, too strong. Zepha haswon overJosh andhis crew“Bogie Leigh bolted in. She killed ‘em. Iwas absolutely gone by then.“I went straight home and said to Kathythat we just had to get a dog.”That meant getting out of Roma.In the meantime he and a few Roma matesformed a syndicate and bought a couple ofpups. One, Go Roma Girl, won at Albion Parkwhen trained by Steve Tribe. She had beenbought as a pup from Victorian breeders Desand June Anthony. At the start of 2007, Josh started work atCentrelink in Toowoomba and he and hisfamily had bought an acre property atWithcott. The greyhound training plan waswell underway.“I’d followed the progeny of WatusiZepha for some time and kept in touch withDes and June after they sold us Go RoamGirl,” he said. “I asked if they had a bitch outof Watusi Zepha and they sold me one at 12months by US sire WW Apple Jax.”Josh was already looking ahead, planningfor his future broodbitch.“I’d noticed lately that so many great dogshad mothers with an outcross in their pedigreeand I thought this bitch suited me perfectly,”he said.So the bitch came to Withcott, on Kathy’sproviso that she would be trained bysomeone else. “That was never going tohappen,” admits Josh. After meeting up with Tony Brett atAlbion Park four years previous, Josh gotback in touch early in 2007 and asked if hecould come out to Brett’s kennels and “pickhis brains” and get some hands-ongreyhound time.Every Sunday he was there, catchingdogs, handling dogs, and generally askinglots of questions. Tony was only too willingto help.So was Brian Kutner the larger than lifeveteran trainer who was riding the crest of awinning wave at the time with his grandAlbion Park performer Token Jet.“Before I knew it I was going to the raceswith Brian and Yvonne with Token Jet bin theback of the car,” he said. “I couldn’t believeit.”When Josh’s bitch was broken in and putinto work, he started slipping her up Brett’sstraight. “Every time I took her over to Tony’she would get up me about her being too fat.”Josh sent the bitch to Steve Tribe for threeweeks while he was in Charleville on a stintfor work. When he came back Steve hadstripped almost four kilos from the bitch.“I realized I had to get serious with herthen, and did,” he said. Now named American Zepha, the bitchstarted trialling well. She’d shown promise ofhandling the Gold Coast in an earlier trial soher first race was set for there.“We had 15 people there to watch her race, family and friends,” said Josh. “And she won.Everyone at work in Toowoomba backed herat $12.50.”His immediate family’s reaction was oneof shock and then ecstasy.Josh now has a Premier County-RapidHoncho dog in training but he has been hurtand is out for a while. Ironically the dam is byRapid Journey. George Allen bred RapidJourney’s sire Amerigo Magic and sold himto the Carruthers.Josh reckons his education, while still witha long way to go, has been in the hands ofexperts. “I talk to Tony Brett and Brian Kutnerevery week but I’ve stopped going to theWithcott Hotel with Brian. It’s a tough schoolthat one.”Matt and Meg, Josh and Kathy’syoungest kids, are regulars at trialling withtheir dad and debate every merit of the dog’sperformances. And uncle George is as proud as punch. He should be, he started it all. Some PictureDerby DayWise FlyerWW Apple JaxGreys StatesmanWW RoyalprincessDutchess MelonyAMERICAN ZEPHAAcacia ParkAcacia AblazeWatusi RoseWatusi ZephaStar ChariotGabby’s GirlPahurehure LassThe BeefSpecialistUnit 5-63 JacquesCrtLawnton,Qld, 4501(Off Paisley Drive)Phone07 32857444Bulk Beef MinceFrozen Bulk Beef20kg, minced, approx 10% fatFrozen Beef Mix20kg, minced, approx 10% fat$2.40 per kg$2.40 per kg$2.00 per kgThe (February, 2008) Journal Page 13

HE might not be a Surf Lorian, but to DaveSchmidt and Cynthia Suttle he’s prettyspecial. He is Pagan Lee (No Intent-Mabilis Babe)and he’s the 2007 Capalaba greyhound of theyear. The dog was bred and originally raced byPeter Bellamy and his mum Mavis. While heand his litter brother Sheer Intent showedability, they were a far cry from the loftyheights of a Surf Lorian so the Bellamy’s werehappy to let them go.That’s when Dave stepped in.“Cynthia was training the dogs for Peterand Mavis and I’ve known Cynthia for many, many years,” said Dave Schmidt.“In fact I first knew her dad.”Dave’s a regular at the Redland Bay Hotelwhere Cynthia works.“I put together a syndicate of blokes afew years ago to buy a few pups for aninterest, but when they were no good, Ibecame the only syndicate member,” he said.Pagan Lee has been a stylish performerfrom Cynthia’s kennel all year.He has now won 11 races, seven of thenat Capalaba but his eight placings at thestraight track helped him take the award.Dave Schmidt is no stranger to award likethis.Back in 1977 he raced in partnership withhis uncle Billy the former star pacer Hard Roadthe winner of 30 races and a Horse of the Yearin Queensland.“We bought him from ChickaPete's pride and joyTHREE days before Peter Bryers cameback to Australia for a brief visit over theChristmas holidays, he decided to get apicture taken of himself with his pride andjoy. With all due respect to Peter’s wife andfamily, his pride and joy for the past decadehas been a black greyhound bitch called HypoHavoc. She was Peter’s first greyhound and shewas a star. She took him to heights he had notbelieved possible when he first bought her asa Cry Havoc-Gracie’s Image puppy. After 32 victories, 25 of them at AlbionPark, she retired and reached even greaterheights as the dam of Hall of Famer BogieLeigh from her first litter, to Just The Best.Unfortunately, just three days after Peterleft Hypo Havoc with a Cambridge trainer, the bitch had a heart attack and died at theage of 11."You have no idea how much a loss this isfor us," said Peter. She had done everything Peter Bryershad asked and much more.“When she ran 29.94 at Albion Park shebecame the second fastest bitch ever at thetrack,” he said.“When Bogie Leigh broke secondsaround Albion Park, she became the secondfastest bitch ever at the track.“Bogie Leigh’s sire was a sub-30 secondwinner at Albion Park, and his dam was asub-30 second winner at Albion Park.“In one year she won 19 races at AlbionPark.“It was the year Winged Runner wongreyhound of the year but won only 15 raceson the track.“My biggest disappointment with her wasthe fact she never made the final three forgreyhound of the year in the year WingedRunner won it and fully deserved to win it.”Bryers has not even been greyhoundracing since he headed home to New Zealand,at Taranga an hour and a half south ofAuckland in the North Island, 18 months ago.But he has retained a couple ofbroodbitches, Hyponui and Tizza Hypo bothdaughters of Hypo Havoc, in Queensland.Hyponui has litters by Black Enforcerand Bond, and Tizza Hypo has a litter to SurfLorian.“I reckon my wife and I will be back inQueensland eventually,” said Bryers.Unfortunately it will be without HypoHavoc. Now at stud ...Token JetAlbion Park 29.91(4 times under 30.00)Ipswich 30.69Lismore 29.93 (Trk Rec)26 wins at Albion ParkWon 10 FFAs in row atAlbion ParkCharlewood,” said Dave. “My uncle Billy hadalso raced Field Master who was a championaround the Exhibition.”Now 60, Dave has become a regular dogman at Capalaba in recent years.“We kept him going specifically to winthe award but it got to him a bit by the end ofthe year and he’s been spelling for a month orso,” said Dave.“There is plenty of racing left in him yet.”Pagan Lee was a regular at Capalaba andthe Gold Coast mid-week throughout the year.Dave has a young dog showing plenty ofability in Bombalong and he and Cynthia havehigh hopes for it.The greyhound of the year title atCapalaba was a “big thrill” for Schmidt andhis one-man syndicate.White & Black dog, June '03, 33.6kgToken Prince-Miss Corleone by Head Honcho90 starts, 30 wins, 21 2nds, 9 3rds, $100,000Won: Clem Jones Cup (Alb Pk in race record), Vince CurryConsolation, Albion Park Young Guns. 2nd: Brisbane Cup Consolation.3rd: Lismore Cup; 3rd Ipswich Gold Cup (2005 & 2006). Christine got toabout the third or fourth foetus when she waspaying particular attention to two when shefound they were TWINS - two pups sharingthe same sack.”Kelly and Christine recorded theultrasound to disk and scanned Fergie againa week later to check the progress of the twinsand the rest of the litter.By week five of Fergie’s pregnancy thetwins were still alive and growing at the samerate as the rest of the litter.Christine performed a c-section on Fergieand Alana Grimes (reproduction assistant)delivered the twins - two girls. In all, the Bombastic Shiraz-Indigo Creeklitter numbered 11.“Twin pups are a rarity, but who knowshow often this does occur as every bitch bredisn’t scanned, so it may occur more than weknow,” said Kelly.“This is our second known set of twinswe have bred at the hospital. We had a showdog last year with twins from a chilled semeninsemination.”Dennis has been worse than an expectantfather.“It’s her third litter,” he said. “She’s hadlitters to US dogs Flying Penske and CraigieWhistler and those that have raced areshowing ability.“Kelly said the Hospital had never seen itin a greyhound before, but I was talking toAnne Southee since and she said a bitch ofhers had delivered twins but one died.”Dennis says the twins are “as good asgold”, two brindle bitches.“I’ve got orders for seven of the pupsand I’m not sure what will happen to thetwins. They are healthy and as strong andbig as the rest of the litter.“They just happen to be a bit special.”The (February, 2008) Journal Page 16

ErroltrotsoutsomeMagicTHE first time Errol Kleinhans sawNinderry Magic as a puppy he fell in lovewith her.But he wasn’t about to give breederRon Glover the $3000 he wanted for her as apup.Errol, 60, had more than a passinginterest in the little black Token Prince-LittleJetson pup. Johnhaslearnedhis tradefrom thevery bestTHERE have been few more astutegreyhound trainers in Queensland thanJohn Allison.John could “always get a quid” out ofhis dogs, and had raced some outstandinggallopers at the Gabba and early AlbionPark days before work commitments forcedhe and wife Maureen to become small-timeowners.The Allisons still race that top gradeAlbion Park performer Angel Flight from theTom Noble kennel and will retain theirinterest in her with litters to come in thefuture. One person quick to pick up on theknowledge of John Allison, was JohnMoore the now Bundaberg based trainer.“He taught me everything I know aboutgreyhounds,” said Moore of Allison.“It was in the early 1980s and I followedhim through the forest at Deception Baypicking up valuable info from him.”Moore had one early venture into theindustry, a dog called Supreme Rival whichwas initially trained by David Keep but itshowed little ability.Allison got Moore his first couple ofsmart gallopers and trained both of theminitially before Moore took over for goodsuccess. The first was Autumn Zip (Son Of Ella-Autumn Beacon) who is the best dogMoore has raced.“He was a very good dog who won afew at the Gabba and ran second in a PuppyStakes at Lawnton … beaten 10 lengths inthe final but we don’t tell anyone that,” saidMoore.Boral Boy was another handy dog, andAllison also trained Cest Nedra (WorthDoing-Mocka Cream) for Moore initiallybefore the owner took over.“She was a very good bitch and wonquite a few races for us,” said Moore.“She had a couple of litters but theydidn’t do much.”Bundaberg Derby (550m)1 DIRTY MONEY $2.50(Big Smig-Yo Yo’s Gem)Owner-trainer: John Moore.2 HAPPY FOR US $3.20(Bright Ebony-Sweet Alabama)3 SNOWY STANLEY $3(Scottish Express-Tillack’s Pride)Others: 4 Bitumen Jack $3.10, 5 CogswellCog $8. Lucky, Jan andthe BabeGnarley Babe stretches out to win aFuture Stars semi-final.Lisa Vanderstok pics.BILL Warner has been in greyhoundracing from the moment he arrived for his firstday of work at Telstra a few decades ago.His first boss was Doug Helton at the timeas keen a greyhound man as any around.Doug dragged Bill, willingly, into the industryand he has stayed. But a couple of years ago “Lucky” Bill, ashe is known to everyone around the tracks, looked like his training career had come to anend.“I had one dog in training at the time, abitch called Little Bloop, and my wife Jan wasadamant she was going to be our last dog,”Bill told The Journal.Which had “Lucky” in a bit of a quandarybecause he was desperate to buy a bitch froma Surf Lorian-Cool Kissy litter just bred byhis long-time mate Denis Comerford.“Cool Kissy had been trained by DeniseRobinson and she went close to a track recordon the track and from memory I think she wonnine of her first 10,” said Bill.Bill had long been mates with Comerford,Ken Mew and Dave “Snowy” Welge.“Snowy and I even looked after Denis’property for a year or two while he wasworking at Kepple Island,” said Bill.“I knew there were two pups left in thelitter of seven, two bitches.”But Jan also had a surprise for Bill.“Jan and I were sitting at home oneSunday when out of the blue, she said we137JohnstonStreet,Casino,NSW2470Ph (02)66622162Fax (02)66625602should go and have a look at the pups,” saidBill. He bought “Gemma” for $2000.But then Jan came up with an even biggersurprise. “If we’ve got one, we may as wellhave another one for company,” she told Bill. The Warners answered a Journaladvertisement for pups by Just The Best-Nanciloo and came away with two of them. All of a sudden, instead of having justNorthern Rivers Veterinary ServiceScott Brown BVSc (Hons)Bill and Jan Warner and their Babe.one racing dog that was to be the Warner’slast, they had four.Barry and Kay Dull reared all three. For about 15 years “Lucky” Bill haswanted a dog with “Gnarley” somewhere inits name.“Gnarley is a surfing term that meansawesome and I’d had it in the back of mymind to use it,” said Bill. With a pup by SurfLorian, it was a natural.Liz Brown BVSc (Hons)* Camelot Farms accredited* Reliable friendly service from an experienced team* Reliable weekly transport service by Renzo Park and PTS* Large semen storage bank* Excellent pregnancy rate and litter size* Stud dog semen collection, evaluation and storage* Air-conditioned kennels* In-house progesterone and T4 testing* Price (frozen semen insemination)$484 all inclusive (includes GRA registration)So Bill and Jan submitted and got GnarleyBabe for the black bitch. She broke in“awesome” at Postman’s Ridge.“John Collins said she had broken in thebest in the shed at that time and he could getme $10,000 for her immediately. We declinedthe offer,” said Bill.“But as soon as the Warner polish wenton her she started to slip backwards.”She was trialling at least six lengths worsethan she should have. A vet check and asevere case of tonsillitis was found. She’dhad the problem for a while. So on a very limited preparation, GnarleyBabe, the dog Bill Warner was not supposedto have, quickly showed her worth with aRenzo Park Future Stars semi-final victory anda luckless run in the rich final.Bill and Jan even bought a photo fromtrack photographer Lisa Vanderstok tocelebrate the semi-final win, Bill’s first winningphoto since Linda’s Liberty had broken theIpswich 431m track record in 1983.They even bought Dennis Moore apicture of the victory. “He’s helped us out alot,” said Bill. The sky is the limit of Gnarley Babe’sfuture and Bill and Jan know it.They are back in greyhound racing forthe long-term once again, even to the stagethat they have since bought a Black Enforcer-Black Eyed Dooley pup from the Dulls. Thatpup was bought after the Warners suffered agreyhound training low with the loss througha broken leg of Little Bloop a householdfavourite.Warner has tasted success in the past witha small number of dogs he’s raced over theyears. Gally Ho was a multiple Albion Parkwinner and her daughter Gally’s Girl ran thirdin an Ipswich Auction final.Bill and Jan are greyhound lovers. They make sure all their dogs find homesafter their race careers. Gally’s Lad is thedarling of the Wilston café set in recent timesafter GAP found him a home. Now all that is needed in the Warnertransformation is a move to acreage living torear Gnarley Babe’s future litters of pups.“Hold on a minute,” said Bill. “Jan would, but I’m quite happy in the city.”Gnarley Babe might change all that in thenext couple of years.CredibilityJust The BestFlying AmySurf LorianWest CapeBarrio FiestaDee BeeGNARLEY BABEOsti’s IdolElle’s CommandoElle ShantyCool KissyHead HonchoHead DirectKissy BearThe (February, 2008) Journal Page 22

Mark'smatehadto beconvincedMARK Alder and Jason Thompson havebeen mates for a long, long time. But when it came time for Mark to askJason to train a pup by Primo Uno-Stumbler’sLass, Jason stumbled over a “yes” reply.“It was only that I was a mate of his thathe finally took the dog,” Mark told TheJournal.“Alright, OK,” was Jason’s ultimateanswer. So the dog, soon to be named Uno Joel, headed to Pearcedale and into Group 1 glorywith a final berth initially in the MelbourneCup and then a narrow victory in the BrisbaneCup at Albion Park. The Uno Joel story starts some yearsbefore when Mark bought his dam “thebiggest bitch to ever race in Australia”.“I bought her as a pup from DannyCorcoran who had raced the dam Pride OfDalmore and she was a pretty smart racebitch,” said Mark.Stumbler’s Lass weighed 37kgs and whileshe won eight races, was a shortcourser whocame closest to victory on a city track when anose second at Sandown after leadingeverywhere except the finish line.“She just couldn’t get 500 metres,” saidMark.Alder is a racing man. He’s had for years and still has racehorsesthat have been successful, Dawn Stormwinning $100,000.A mate he shared ownership in a coupleof horses years ago now owns top WFAgalloper Apache Cat.He decided to give Stumbler’s Lass herchance at stud and because Jason is his mate, sent her to No Intent who stands stud dutiesat Awesome Lodge. The litter included a dog called Alderwaywho had the misfortune of catching the lureduring a trial at Warragul, the lure ending upembedded in his chest.“To this day we don’t know how hesurvived,” said Mark. “He was anything. Wegot him back to the races and eventually hefinished third in a Healesville Cup and thatmeant a lot to me.“But he was nothing like he was going tobe.”With the first litter able to gallop, MarkBrisbane Cup (520m)Albion Park1 UNO JOEL $8(Primo Uno-Stumbler’s Lass)Owner: Mark AlderTrainer: Jason Thompson2 MANDAGERY MAN $2.40(Token Prince-Eriskay)3 HOT TO RUMBLE $2.40(Where’s Pedro-Vintage Rumble)Others: 4 Anarchy $26, 5 Super Hornet $8, 6Inastare $21, 7 Gozo Smile $7.50, 8 El Galo$11. From it cameUno Joel.“George and Sharon reared them atCranbourne and they did a marvellous job,”said Mark. When the dog broke in “showing ability”,Mark had plenty of trouble convincing hismate Jason to take him on.“He only did it because we are mates,”said Mark. “I’ve had other dogs with othertrainers, but I wanted Jason to have thisbloke.”Jason would have been the first to thinkhe had made a mistake when he first startedwork on Uno Joel.“He won his first couple of starts withoutshowing much, but he got quicker and quickeras he went on,” said Mark. “In fact, Jasonreckons he’s the slowest dog in his kennelbut has the biggest heart.“He just doesn’t know when to quit.”In the past few months Mark has had theride of his greyhound racing lifetime.“I’ve had horses for years and when I tellpeople in that game I’ve just won a Group 1some of them seem to dismiss it a bit,” hesaid.“But I can tell you, I was so excited. It wasthe thrill of a lifetime when he won.”Mark and his family headed to Albion Parkand were won over by the hospitality theyreceived from the club. “That Sharon andLuke at the Brisbane Club deserve a hugethank you. They were unbelievable to us.”The Alder family is still coming to gripswith the victory.“It’s my biggest thrill in racing of course. To win a Group 1 is something special in anyform of racing,” said Mark.“It’s my pinnacle at the moment.”“At the moment” means Mark and Jasonhave big plans ahead. To time of writing the dog was to be amongthe Rob Britton team to go to the US for theDerby Lane Millions late in February andMarch. (This has since been shelved)“Rob approached Jason at first and thenphoned me about taking Uno Joel in his teamfor the US,” said Mark.“Jason was fantastic about it andrecommended we give the dog his chanceover there. He will not come back from theUS, but will continue to race there after themillion dollar race.”Thompson reasoned that Uno Joel, themental chaser that he is, would not be an idealhouse pet for the Alders, or anyone for thatmatter.“If he happened to show his best form inthe US and even win a big race over there, itmight give him a stud career,” said Mark.“Jason convinced us he would not have astud career here at the moment but that couldeventuate in the States.Uno Joel's Group 1 victory(above) and Mark Alderand family celebrate (right)Corey Pearce pics.“It’s a huge thing for us to have a dogconsidered good enough to go to the States,”he said.If Uno Joel happens to get to the$US500,000 to the winner final at Derby Lane,Mark will pack up his family and be tracksidefor the race.Just like they all did when Uno Joel tookon some glamour sprinters in the BrisbaneCup … and won.MARK Alder was blown away with howthe Brisbane Club treated he and his familyduring the Brisbane Cup carnival. But local dog man Ben Shepherd madehis night.“A few years ago I sent a bitch calledIntent Lass (No Intent-Stumbler’s Lass) toFEBRUARY 2Australia Day Maiden Final (420m) $685Maiden (420m) $300Maiden (520m) $300Tweed Valley Sprint (520m) Best 8, $450Stayers Stake (652m) Best 8, $450FEBRUARY 9Maiden (420m) $300Maiden (520m) $300Blue Paws Sprint (420m) 5th Grade $450, registeredwinner $600 bonusCoolangatta Sprint (420m) Best 8, $450Tweed Valley Sprint (520m) Best 8, $450Stayers Stake (652m) 1-4 wins, $450FEBRUARY 164 x February Novice Heats (420m) $4502 x February Novice Heats (520m) $450Maiden (420m) $300Tweed Valley Stake (520m) Best 8, $450Stayers Stake (652m) Best 8, $450FEBRUARY 23February Novice Final (420m) $645February Novice Final (520m) $645Blue Paws Maiden (420m) $300, registered winnerbonus $600Maiden (520m) $300Stayers Stake (652m) 1-4 wins, $450Brisbane to a guy called Ben Shepherd,” saidMark.“Ben has decided to breed with the bitch.“On Cup night, Ben came down andintroduced himself to us. THE thrill of your first city win is a memoryyou take with you for the rest of your life andfor Scott Reed it came off a gamble topurchase a bitch from South Australia forbreeding, by his owner and now close friendJamie Hall. The decision to purchase Miss Armanihas resulted in unexpected delight for Reed.Hall was looking long term to breed with abitch that had the bloodlines to throw winnersand hopefully give him success.Miss Armani is by Token Prince-MissAngelique the dam a champion producer andout of the brilliant stayer Miss Cruise.“With breeding like that you would expectto get some results,” Reed explained.Reed met up with Jamie after beingintroduced by friends.”Jamie raced horses for a while and whenthat was not successful he decided to getinvolved with the dogs,” said Scott.“Jamie saw her ( Miss Armani) race inAdelaide and went over to buy her along withanother bitch called Senza Nome (SouthernChamp-Lucky Penna) both bred by SarahPringle.“He (Jamie) wanted to help his dad, Leswho suffered a back injury, by giving himinterest in the dogs.”Reed took over the training of MissArmani in November and won first up atRichmond.“She trialled brilliantly for me and we hada good go at her.”Since then the bitch has raced seven timesfor two city wins, the first a week beforeChristmas, giving Reed his first city winnerafter 10 years.“My first dog was a giveaway (LoneReport) who had 13 starts and he ran third ondebut for me then won at Bathurst,” he recalls.Reed in his first few years started fromGary ClarkNew South Walesthe bottom training dogs with little ability whostruggled to win.Eventually he prepared TAB winners andfinally his thrill came in December with MissArmani. He has four in work and anumber of well bred pups bySurf Lorian and Go Wild Teddywhile the aim is to developstage by stage.”Along with Jamie, we arelooking to eventually moveonto a few acres and increasethe size of our operationparticularly now that we havethe broodbitches,” Reed said.Reed pays tribute to TonyGannon who has helped himthrough the early years.“I’ve done myapprenticeship, now I’m readyto move to the next level.”Reed is married to Melissa who has takento the dogs (now that they’re winning, Scottsaid) and they have four children, Nathan (15and loves helping with the dogs), Andrew,12, Tegan, 6, and the youngest Jordyn, 4.After working with Dairy Farmers, Scottis now a forklift driver and his shifts havebeen favourable to him for training the dogs. While Miss Armani will be given a chanceas a stayer, and why not with her bloodlines,it has been an astute purchase by Jamie andlooks like his teaming with Scott is going totake them on one big adventure.Scott summed his expectations uprealistically.“I used to go to Wenwtorth Park to see ifI really fitted in, if I should be here or not, ifthere was a place for me, now I know I have afuture in the sport,” he said.Scott Reed did not expect to be at the toplevel instantly. His attitude will take him a long way inlife, a supporting family and a goal to workwith close friend Jamie to one day succeedhis dreams.Dapto Greyhound Racing Clubis now calling for nominations for the 10th Country Winnebago PuppyAuction to be conducted by the Dapto Greyhound Racing ClubOnly pups soldthrough the Auctionwill be eligible forthe $80,000 CountryWinnebago PuppyClassic Series (520m)to be held at Dapto inOctober/November/December 2009.2009 Auction Final will beworth $50,000 to the winner!Auction: May 4, 2008Closing date for nominations, Monday February 11 at 4pm.Eligibility: For pups whelped between July 1, 2007 and January 8, 2008.Please Note: Dapto Greyhound Racing Club reserves the right not to acceptall nominations. At the 9th (2007)Auction, Lotsfetched a total ofover $670,000.For nomination forms and further information, please contact Dapto Greyhounds on (02) 4261 1080Visit our websitewww.daptodogs.org.auorwww.daptopuppyauction.com.auThe (February, 2008) Journal Page 24

Sounds exciting, so if this does eventuate what sort ofgreyhound racing track will be built? There are rumours around that it will be two tracks, one Gold Coast size track with anAlbion Park size track inside it. It is highly unlikely the powers that be would go to thatexpense. The Queensland Government is already carrying a massive debt.We have been racing inside a harness racing track at Albion Park a situation not too manylicensees were ever happy with. How would racing inside another greyhound track be muchdifferent? Why not build one good track and make it the best greyhound racing track everbuilt. Please don’t build another track with starting boxes only a short distance to the first turn.Everyone knows the greater distance to the first turn the less important the box draw. Wedefinitely don‘t need starts like 395m and 600m at Albion Park and 431m at Ipswich. When the story about the Logan site broke it was said there was plenty of land available.Would it be possible to build a track with two starting shutes like the plan enclosed. There goes a tale that could be true, One will never knowIt has it’s likeness in the rouge, as this will surely showI speak of one that’s done it all, with greyhounds so they sayNone other than the Gatti lad, from up the Glasshouse wayThe story goes that “way way” back, he bred this super litterThe welping box was chock a block, twelve or maybe betterBut like our Ray he didn’t count, that was close enoughHe’d check ‘em out come break in time, if they all stood upRay’s method of a rearing farm, was the forest up the backHe’d hang the tucker on the fence, down they’d come in packsThe toughest ones would get the best, the others got their shareAnd he would watch the mob each day, to pick the toughest pairWell every day for fourteen months, this ritual came aboutAnd every day for fourteen months, the same two dogs stood outTwo red fawns with pointed ears, would always lead the packThey’d have their fill then walk away, the others just stood backBack them days they branded ears after breaking in was doneNo DNA, no final checks, Rafferty’s rules could runAnd red fawn dogs in them days were, pretty common placeLeft no doubt in Gatti’s mind, that these two dogs he’d raceWell this is where the fun began, was lead and collar timeFreedom was the dogs intent, Gatti’s was [your mine]They snapped and snarled at Gatti, rage was in their eyesBut pick a fight with this bloke mate wasn’t very wiseThank Youfrom RayRAY Gatti would liketo thank allgreyhound racing fortheir condolences onthe recent death ofhis wife Margaret whowas best known to allas "Blue".Owen EdmondsRed FawnDogsThe kennel block with them inside, became a living hellThe rationed feed was not enough, they howled all night as wellRay’s patience quickly running out, but to back off was a sinHe made a promise to himself, I’ll break these bastards inAnd so he did and he was proud, they chased the lure real goodThe hunger pains made them chase, to them the lure was foodThe problem came when they found, the lure was not to eatThen trying to catch them in the pen, became a wondrous featYesteryear's ChampsGREAT HEARTA fawn dog whelped in 1900 he was by Lindsay Gordon-Gypsy Green and bred atBathurst by Mr R Gowland. He debuted with victory in the NSW Derby at Rooty Hill as apuppy. He also won the Grand Challenge Stakes soon after. He finished runner-up toKilronan in the 1903 Waterloo Cup. His greatest year came in 1904 when he won histhird Orange Cup and second Grand Challenge and then took out the Waterloo Cup atMoonee Valley. He ran up in the Waterloo Cup in 1905. In all he had 69 wins, four defeatsand was only six times led. In one course he scored a remarkable 14 points without lettinghis rival earn a point. So on they went till naming time, and Ray began to bragThe fastest dogs he’d ever bred, the money’s in the bagUntil he checked the litter list, no red dogs could be foundA problem even back them days, you couldn’t get aroundAnd then he woke to what was wrong, he’d made a terrible blueThe other dogs were all jet black, except his favourite twoSomeone had slipped the two reds in, at whelping time for funThen sent the whelping notice in, that’s where the joke begunRay hadn’t cared or gave a thought, as to the colour redAnd though they seemed a little odd, he favoured them insteadAnd when he twigged to what they were, he turned to Aussie lingoThe fastest dogs he ever broke, two pure bred bloody dingos! So You Want to be aGreyhoundTrainerAll New!GreyhoundTraining BookCoominya Lodge280 LARSENS RD, COOMINYAWHELPING - Heated whelping bays with experienced mid-wife on hand. Open to all Teams. NominationFree.A GALA DAY ofSPORT, SPEED & THRILLSReserve the day and be there.Nominations for Greyhound Events closeTuesday night, April 3rd, 1928.Important NoticeOwing to the above fixture being held atIpswich on Easter Monday no meeting willbe held at Woolloongabba on Saturdaynight, April 7th.That’s the advertisement that heralded ina huge day of fun in the very early days ofgreyhound racing.OK, I wasn’t there for that Gala Day. But Ithought what a great idea to have a Tug-of-War at Albion Park one night. The teams could be, the GRA verses TheTable of Knowledge.Pick your own teams, but I reckon the GRAwould have to include Danny Ryan, DarrenBeavis, our own Editor David Brasch, graderEddie Little, Chris Williams and even KerryWatson could get a spot as anchor. The Table of Knowledge team would haveto be captained by Lemonade Tom.He would be ably assisted by BobbyBelford, Ned Snow, Jimmy Konoski, MickThrupp, Johnny Dart, the giant of greyhoundtrainers Ray Gatti, and what about theiranchor being Margaret Quarrell.I reckon Haydn Flynn would bet 4-6 theGRA and evens the Table of Knowledge. All “tuggers” to be swabbed pre-race.That Lemonade Tommy hasn’t been theSMS TECHNOLOGYThe GRA in the New Year introduced SMStechnology, an exciting new service fortrainers racing at TAB meetings. On the completion of a box draw for a TABmeeting, a “text” message will be sent to thetrainer’s mobile phone advising that theirgreyhound is drawn at a particular meeting, the date, race, box no. and at no cost to thetrainer. An example of the message will be:Your greyhound “BOGIE LEIGH” isdrawn at BNE1 25/12/07 in Race 1 Box 1.GRAQ.Trainers who have multiple greyhoundsdrawn at a meeting will receive an individualSMS message per greyhound. The GRA islooking to extend the service to includenotifying trainers whose greyhounds wereoriginally drawn as a reserve and gain a startas a result of a scratching.Should you not wish to receive messagesvia SMS to your mobile phone, please advisethe GRA as soon as possible. For any queries regarding this serviceplease contact the Authority.Memoriessame towards me since I got a championnamed after me … Knocka Norris. Tom’s isn’tthe only one with a famous nickname. While the Bundamba day was a beauty, Ifound something very entertaining about aGabba Great Variety Handicap run over 550yards in the early 1900s.The line-up was:1 Lady runner Miss A King off 340 yards2 Man runner Bob Lindsay 290 yards3 Cyclist Cecile Weaver 130 yards4 Boy runner C Ackerman 340 yards5 Greyhound Finette Scratch6 Whippet Gowrie Maid 60 yards7 Goat Brownie 350 yardsThe result was: C Ackerman 1, Miss AKing 2, Bob Lindsay 3.The winner received three pound. While this is off topic of those greatvariety days of years gone by, it is amazinghow greyhound racing is such a great topicfor anyone.Because of my ties with rugby league, Iwas at a Men Of League reunion at BroncosLeagues Club recently and ran into SteeleDavis. He played with Easts in my time on thefooty field in the 1950s. Steele has become avery successful businessman but I had notseen him for almost 20 or 30 years.Instead of asking about old footy times, the first thing we started talking about wasgreyhound racing.Steele was one of the first into the LedlieConfederacy. He was there when the groupraced such stars as Black Stout, Half Stoutand others during the Gabba days.I’ve since brought it up with JohnnyReimer who remembers well the boys evenhiring a light plane to fly to Brisbane to backConfederacy dogs. And Johnny reckons they would love abet, a big bet. After Steele, I ran into Greg Cannon whois well known these days to everyone as avery astute trainer with Buckingham Chuckbeing his star lately.Greg was enjoying a cold one during theday. Not many in greyhound racing wouldknow, but Greg had a long involvement inrugby league and coached the Berrigan boysin their young days and “put them on thepath to greatness”.When nominating for specialevents e.g. Novice, Time Trial,Young Guns etc, and it is the onlyevent you wish your greyhound tobe considered for please ensureyou advise or state ONLY e.g.Novice Only, Time Trial only.Should you not indicate ONLY,the grading panel will thenconsider and include you in otherevents should your greyhound beeligible to compete in them.WILD VOODOO(Go Wild Teddy x Voodoo Princess)ex Voodoo Lady17 wins, his first 8 straight. The night she won$1800 in a trifecta at Albion Park. The money was burning a hole in JulieEdmondson’s pocket. So she went lookingfor a greyhound.“I had raced dogs many years ago, butwanted to get back into it,” Julie told TheJournal.“So I rang Sam Apap the next day andasked him where I can buy a puppy. I toldSam all I had to spend was $1000.”As fate would have it, Sam had a litter ofpups by Deep North-Ultra Queen and he wasabout to do Julie two HUGE favours.First, the pups were by this time 10 monthsold and Sam wanted $5000 each for them. Juliehad just $1000 to spend. Sam let her take herpick for $1000. “He succumbed to my charms,”said Julie. They were by the brilliant sprinter DeepNorth who was runner-up in the NationalDerby. Their dam Ultra Queen was a multipleAlbion Park winner, over 520m and 600m, andwon a number of provincial races in 1994.“I decided to buy the blue brindle dogthat I liked from the litter.”But a day later, Sam rang and said he haddecided to sell that particular dog to someclients. He would race as Ima Monarchist andwin a country cup, land a few Albion Parkwins and acquit himself admirably while on aVictorian campaign.Brisbane Club president Michael Byrnewould race him with some friends.“Sam said I could have the bitch that wasleft,” said Julie. “I had actually picked her outfirst. She was fawn and very stocky … classylooking.”Two dogs in the litter Julie sidesteppedwould later be named Short Model and KeenModel. Tom Patterson would buy them for aclient and turn them into superstars.Short Model would become a Group 1winner at Albion Park.Julie was happy to take the fawn bitch.“But when I went over to pick her up it tookhalf an hour to catch her,” she said. “She wasa wild thing.”Julie was living at Boronia Heights at thetime. She took the fawn bitch home and fourweeks later she shattered bones in her wrist.“I took her to (vet) Graham Beh and hedidn’t give her much chance of getting to theraces, 50-50 was the odds,” said Julie.“I couldn’t afford the operation so wedecided to leave the chips of bones floatingin her wrist so it would heal naturally. I wasgoing to keep her for breeding anyway so itdidn’t matter about the racing career.”Julie broke in the bitch, now named QueenSize, herself and set her for the Vince Curryseries at Ipswich. “But every time I trialledher she would pull up lame,” she said.So in desperation she took the bitch backto Sam who used “and old remedy” on herand within eight weeks she was back on thetrack. She ran second in her Vince Curry quallyand fell over in the quarter-final.“She was showing lots of ability in trialsat Tweed, Beenleigh and then Ipswich,” saidJulie.Eventually Queen Size would win fourraces, run 12 placings, and retire after about35 starts spread over 14 months on the track.“Eventually the wrist got so bad I justhad to retire her,” said Julie.“She showed her ability by winning firstup at Albion Park in 30.39 which was the bestof the day.“I took her back to Graham Beh and hisadvice was that she was finished. She wasretired very young and would be the first bitchI had ever bred with.”Queen Size was destined, and determined,AUSTRALIAN WINNING LINESVolume 15 - 2006 $55 (inc postage & handling)Containing all the usual features of the greyhound year: City Winners; Sires, Dams& Maternal Grandsires of City Winners; Western Australia; Australian Feature RaceWinners; Sires, Dams, Maternal Grandsires and Pedigrees of Feature Race Winners;Australian Track Records and Overseas Feature Winners.Cheques/Money Orders payable to:Peter Rose, PO Box 330, Jimboomba, Qld, 4280.Ph (07) 5548 6687The (February, 2008) Journal Page 30

According to figuresprovided in the GRA Annual Report 2007administration expenses of some clubscontinue to increase.Limited opportunities to produce incomestreams other than TAB turnover meansincreased expenses have to be off set byreduced prizemoney levels. The table below sets out the prize moneypaid by each club in 2007 and 2006 as per theGRA 2007 Annual Report.Although some clubs managed to increasethe amount of prizemoney paid, there was anoverall reduction in prizemoney statewide of5.25%.Many in our industry will feel a 5%reduction in prizemoney combined with a 3%inflation rate.Club 2007 2006 DifferenceBrisbane $3,869,005 $4,293,815 -$424,810Gold Coast $1,147,770 $1,169,220 -$21,450Ipswich $1,209,900 $1,178,500 +$31,400Bundaberg $143,605 $154,815 -$11,210Cairns $139,155 $132,160 +$6,995Capalaba $211,385 $198,615 +$12,770Mackay $136,500 $141,705 -$5,205Rockhampton $172,212 $170,095 +$2117Townsville $311,140 $299,300 +$11,840Totals $7,340,672 $7,747,225 -$406,553As the table shows prizemoney for thefinancial year 2006-07 dropped acrossQueensland by $406,553.This was before the Equine Influenzacrisis that cost the greyhound industryapproximately $900,000 which was partiallyoffset by a grant from the State Governmentof $250,000.I would expect that total prizemoney paidout in 2007-08 would again be decreasedprimarily because of the EI crisis. The possibility of higher inflation, reduced prizemoney and a recession will leadto serious problems in our industry in theimmediate future.Participation rates and levels will comeunder review for most owners, trainers andAwesome Assassin x Highland Bride (Irish damline)A seriously fast greyhound.Short listed 2003 Topgun.Free progesterone testingAlbion Park 30.05Stud fee $880Ipswich 30.58 (track record)Wenty Pk 30.16, best 30.11Pat Hennessy: 0408 468612Sandown 29.76Meadows 29.88Producing fast pups winning at City & TAB venuesfrom only 5 litters racing, a second to none strike rate. The (February, 2008) Journal Page 32breeders.Clubs need to review their expenditure andtake the necessary steps now beforeprizemoney reductions hit crisis point. The table below shows that of the$9,868,429 allocated by the GRA, $2,527,757was not allocated by clubs as prizemoneytherefore it can only have gone intoadministration.More than 25.61% of allocation (orapproximately $1 in every $4 allocated)throughout the state is being used to payexpenses. In order to keep faith with the industryeach club needs to do an urgent review ofthese expenses.Club Allocation Prize money DifferenceBrisbane $5,016,194 $3,869,005 $1,147,189Gold Coast $1,661,169 $1,147,770 $513,399Ipswich $1,542,746 $1,209,900 $332,846Bundaberg $229,720 $143,605 $86,115Cairns $204,603 $139,155 $65,448Capalaba $323,000 $211,385 $111,615Mackay $223,371 $136,500 $86,871Rockhampton $238,920 $172,212 $66,708Townsville $428,701 $311,140 $117,561Totals $9,868,429 $7,340,672 $2,527,757To get a clearer picture of expenses and abasis for comparison it is necessary to lookat costs in relation the number of meetingsconducted. Food suppliedto GAP dogsby Big DogPet FoodsOur visit toSt John’sNursing HomeKirsty O'BrienGAP NewsBy SANDRA OHMSENAbout two months back I had thepleasure of visiting a nursing home atChermside.I had worked in the area for more than20 years and it was good catching up withpeople I had associated with in a workingcapacity. My reason for my visit was to discusmy coming to the home on regular visitswith my greyhound Sharkey (LochinvarAgent).Sharkey’s first day at work was a hugesuccess.Sharkey may not have thought so atfirst, as his first encounter was with one ofthe resident cats. Sharkey came off theworst, pussy cat decided he would latch onand scratch the side of Sharkey’s nose.Everyone heard this big blackgreyhound cry, so each time Sharkey visits, the cats are put into their room. Sharkey hasnever forgotten and is looking for them allthe time.St John’s nursing home has dementiapatients and a visit to them by a big doghas been a huge success.I have trained Sharkey to walk down thehallway without me holding onto his leadand to wait at each door until I gather uphis lead and then to go in to visit thepatients. In the short time wehave been going there, StJohn’s have noticed a bigdifference in the patients, their responses to bothSharkey and I have beenvery good andencouraging. When Sharkey and Ienter the building a lot ofthe patients are sittingresting and as soon asthey see us coming alongthey become veryattentive and their smilesare great.Sharkey is very happy to be patted andcuddled by them and at times has tried toget into bed with them.He is so gentle and calming and oftenwill stand beside them and wait for a pat.Sharkey has some favourites, especiallythose with food “fruit and biscuits”.Sharkey has also met a patient’s little foxterrier called Timmy and at first Timmy wasnot too keen on Sharkey visiting his mother. However, now they are good friendsand greet each other in the usual manner“big tall dog to short little dog”.The staff love Sharkey and they toocome looking for him and again he gets theattention. This is very rewarding to me to seethese patients smile and want to interactwith Sharkey and I, they do get pleasureand comfort out of patting a dog.On our return home this big dog calledSharkey is tired himself and I wonder whathe tells the other two greys we have in ourcare.Greyhounds really do make great pets.I recommend visiting patients in nursinghomes, as the tremendous feeling that youget giving something very special to eachof them … A SMILE, A HUG.Ipswich Greyhound RacingIGRCClub 'Leading allthe Way'Major Race Date2008 HIGHLAND SMASH REPAIRVINCE CURRY MEMORIALMAIDEN SERIES 520m“Australia’s Richest Maiden Series”$25,000 Winner of the FinalSaturday February 9 Qualifying HeatsTuesday February 19 Heats*Tuesday February 26 Semi-finals*Tuesday March 4 Final*Number Subject to Noms received.Additional Information Available by Contacting the Club.$33 Nomination Fee Payable Qualifying Heat NightBOOKMAKER RETURNS FORTUESDAY NIGHTSStarts Tuesday February 5“See the return of the Bookmaker to Ipswich.”Ipswich Greyhound Racing ClubPh: 07 3202 2977 Fax: 07 3202 2510 Email:igrc@gil.com.auDogs for Racing OverseasMust be under 26 monthsPh Steve Wilkes(07) 54465112 or 0427 319944ShiokazeBlue Fawn, Sept '03, 33.1kgs(Yo Yo's Boy-Alanna Princess)28 starts, 18 wins, 3 2nds, 2 3rds.Track RecordsGold Coast 401m 22.64 (ht)Albion Park 395m 22.55Gold Coast 457m 25.58Won Awesome FouresomeCapalaba (19.67)Albion Park 30.14Trainer Ron Ball declared him asfast as any dog he has trained.Fee: $300.
