Until recently, Ahmad Fawzi was Director of the UN News and Media Division. As a UN
spokesman, he served in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, and travelled the world with
three Secretaries-General. He directed the UN Information Centre in London for six years.
He joined the UN in 1992 as Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, after forging a
career in broadcast journalism, government and academia.
GrAhAm FrAser
Graham Fraser is Canada’s Commissioner of Official Languages and an author with 40 years
of experience in the field of journalism. He studied at the University of Toronto, where he
earned a BA and an MA in history. Over the years, he has held positions of ever-greater
responsibility at various newspapers.
He has been awarded honorary PhDs by the Université Sainte-Anne and the University of
Ottawa, and has received the Public Policy Forum’s Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in
Public Policy Journalism.

The Alliance of Civilizations is an initiative proposed by the President of the Government of
Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, at the 59th General Assembly of the United Nations
in 2005. The initiative seeks to galvanize international action against extremism through
the forging of international, intercultural and interreligious dialogue and cooperation. The
Alliance places a particular emphasis on defusing tensions between the Western and
Islamic worlds. Isabelle Legare is the Alliance’s Youth Program Manager. One of their goals is
to have a youth perspective in the media debate, on cross-cultural and interreligious issues.
Aly mAher
Aly Maher is an Egyptian diplomat and intellectual. After serving as an ambassador to
France, he was appointed Secretary-General of the Arab Thought Foundation, where he
played an important role in improving cross-cultural dialogue and presenting a global view
of the Arab culture. From 2006 to 2008, he directed the Institute for Peace Studies, which is
part of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement.
