Until recently, Ahmad Fawzi was Director of the UN News and Media Division. As a UN<br />

spokesman, he served in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, and travelled the world with<br />

three Secretaries-General. He directed the UN Information Centre in London for six years.<br />

He joined the UN in 1992 as Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, after forging a<br />

career in broadcast journalism, government and academia.<br />

GrAhAm FrAser<br />

Graham Fraser is Canada’s Commissioner of Official Languages and an author with 40 years<br />

of experience in the field of journalism. He studied at the <strong>University</strong> of Toronto, where he<br />

earned a BA and an MA in history. Over the years, he has held positions of ever-greater<br />

responsibility at various newspapers.<br />

He has been awarded honorary PhDs by the Université Sainte-Anne and the <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Ottawa, and has received the Public Policy Forum’s Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in<br />

Public Policy Journalism.<br />

isAbelle leGAre<br />

The Alliance of Civilizations is an initiative proposed by the President of the Government of<br />

Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, at the 59th General Assembly of the United Nations<br />

in 2005. The initiative seeks to galvanize international action against extremism through<br />

the forging of international, intercultural and interreligious dialogue and cooperation. The<br />

Alliance places a particular emphasis on defusing tensions between the Western and<br />

Islamic worlds. Isabelle Legare is the Alliance’s Youth Program Manager. One of their goals is<br />

to have a youth perspective in the media debate, on cross-cultural and interreligious issues.<br />

Aly mAher<br />

Aly Maher is an Egyptian diplomat and intellectual. After serving as an ambassador to<br />

France, he was appointed Secretary-General of the Arab Thought Foundation, where he<br />

played an important role in improving cross-cultural dialogue and presenting a global view<br />

of the Arab culture. From 2006 to 2008, he directed the Institute for Peace Studies, which is<br />

part of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement.<br />
