I N M E M O R YWalt WardFor nearly four decades, Walt Ward was part <strong>of</strong> the foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ferrari</strong> enthusiasts<strong>of</strong> southern California and was instrumental in the growth <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ferrari</strong> community.Walt joined the <strong>Ferrari</strong> Owners <strong>Club</strong> in 1966 as member #46 where he and hiswonderful wife Carolyn have been two <strong>of</strong> the hardest working members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Club</strong>.Walt had served on the board since the sixties holding nearly board position includingtwo-time President in 1974 and 1986. He had served as both Membership and <strong>Region</strong>Chairperson for years and served on countless nominating committees. Walt also wasawarded the very prestigious Hans Tanner award which he was also first honored within 1987. In 2002 he received the Lifetime Achievement Recognition.Many <strong>of</strong> the events that are enjoyed today were conceived and initiated by Walt.He organized the first Laguna Seca Monterey Historic Automobile Races in collaborationwith Steve Earle. Walt also pioneered the Virginia City Hill Climb with HansTanner. With the help <strong>of</strong> his devoted wife Carolyn, the first Ride & Drive to TheGiant Forest redwoods. Walt with the assistance <strong>of</strong> his wife were also instrumental inthe launch <strong>of</strong> the Palm Springs Races.32J. B. Nethercutt‘The recognition andpreservation <strong>of</strong> beautyhas been a major focus<strong>of</strong> my life, it would suitme well if what peopleremembered about mewas "Where he went heleft beauty behind.”’J.B. NethercuttJ. B. Nethercutt co-founder <strong>of</strong> Merle Norman Cosmetics & founder <strong>of</strong> TheNethercutt Collection & Museum passed-away December 6, 2004. He was 91 yearsold. Mr. Nethercutt was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1913. He moved to SantaMonica, California to live with his maternal aunt Merle Norman after his mother’sdeath when he was only nine years old. Mrs. Norman, in the 1920’s, had begun asmall business producing cosmetics for sale locally and opened her first Merle NormanCosmetic studio in Ocean Park, California in the 1930’s. Mr. Nethercutt was then astudent at Cal Tech but decided toquit school to go into business with Mrs. Norman.J.B. Nethercutt's ideas, attention to detail and a great business instinct led to his c<strong>of</strong>oundingwith Mrs. Norman <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>America</strong>'s most successful and respected businesses.J. B. Nethercutt married his childhood sweetheart Dorothy Sykes in 1933. Themarriage lasted over 70 years until her death on October 8, 2004. It was during theearly part <strong>of</strong> their life together that J.B. & Dorothy Nethercutt began their love affairwith old cars, back then <strong>of</strong> course they were new cars. J.B. said “When we were outdriving we would see the gleaming monsters that we call Classics today, and we studiedthem, visited the automobile showrooms, we bugged the salesmen to death.” He saidwith a smile. “We got to a point where we could identify a car two blocks away andpretty well quote the specifications on it. Years later when I had become successful inthe business I had started, we were affluent enough to afford one <strong>of</strong> those gleamingmonsters we remembered so well, we found that most <strong>of</strong> them were in dreadful condition.”This was the beginning <strong>of</strong> a lifelong passion to preserve and protect those wonderfulautomobiles from their youth, a passion that continues today. And, the founding<strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the world’s finest collections <strong>of</strong> Antique and Classic automobile collections:The Nethercutt Collection & Museum now numbering over 240 automobiles anddozens <strong>of</strong> mechanical musical devices. Since1958, Mr. Nethercutt has won the PebbleBeach Concours d’Elegance six times, more than any other individual.To ensure the future <strong>of</strong> the collection and museum, which as in the past are openfree to the public, J. B. Nethercutt has established a perpetual endowment. Mr.Nethercutt commented recently “It is my intention that this collection will be availablefor the public, that it shall be preserved and perpetuated as far as the human mind canconceive.”
