Structure <strong>of</strong> Case ReviewFacilitating Case ReviewsOne person should be identified to coordinate and facilitate <strong>the</strong> case review discussionprocess. Having one person adds to <strong>the</strong> effectiveness and efficiency <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> process.Team members will value <strong>the</strong> review process if <strong>the</strong> facilitator makes <strong>the</strong> revieworganized and purposeful. Case reviews may be facilitated by a designated teammember as a regular assignment or may be assigned on a rotating basis. Prosecutorswho serve as team members <strong>of</strong>ten serve in <strong>the</strong> capacity <strong>of</strong> facilitator <strong>for</strong> case reviews.Which Cases Are ReviewedAll reported cases <strong>of</strong> child sexual abuse shall be reviewed by <strong>the</strong> multidisciplinary team(KRS 431.600). Cases should be reviewed by <strong>the</strong> team on a regular basis from <strong>the</strong>initiating report through all court proceedings (both criminal and/or dependency.) Casesin which <strong>the</strong>re is no court action shall be regularly reviewed until <strong>the</strong> agencies involvedclose <strong>the</strong> case and <strong>the</strong> team determines that all review objectives have been met.<strong>Teams</strong> may also include <strong>the</strong> review <strong>of</strong> cases involving <strong>the</strong> serious physical injury ordeath <strong>of</strong> a child in <strong>the</strong>ir local protocol.Who Brings Cases ForwardAll team members shall be equally empowered and encouraged to bring cases be<strong>for</strong>e<strong>the</strong> team <strong>for</strong> review. Because KRS 620.030 allows <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> reporting <strong>of</strong> child sexualabuse to multiple reporting agencies, <strong>the</strong> team should decide which reports eachagency will be responsible <strong>for</strong> presenting to <strong>the</strong> team as new cases <strong>for</strong> review.Process <strong>of</strong> Case ReviewThe case review process should include <strong>the</strong> following:• The presentation <strong>of</strong> newly reported allegations <strong>of</strong> child sexual abuse since <strong>the</strong>last team meeting;• The review <strong>of</strong> pending cases and a plan <strong>for</strong> future action;• The development <strong>of</strong> strategies <strong>for</strong> meeting <strong>the</strong> emotional support and treatmentneeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> child and non-<strong>of</strong>fending family members;• The consideration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> child's protection and o<strong>the</strong>r safety issues;• The promotion <strong>of</strong> efficient and appropriate disposition <strong>of</strong> cases as <strong>the</strong>y proceedthrough <strong>the</strong> criminal justice system (KRS 620.040(7)(c)) and/or proceedingsunder KRS Chapter 620;• The input <strong>of</strong> team members regarding prosecution and sentencing decisions.32
