RELIGIOUS ISSUES
Manfred Lütz
God
320 pages, 3-629-02158-1
September 2007
God doesn’t exist, thank God. But
what if – God forbid – God does exist?
Manfred Lütz analyzes the return of God.
Hardcore agnostics and absolute atheists
will have to be ready for a fight, because
this is the work of a no-holds-barred analyst
of the zeitgeist – his main weapon is
humor, and his persuasiveness is inescapable.
“Psychiatrists tend to have delusions of
grandeur,” writes the author, himself a
psychiatrist. His book mentions the likes
of Elton John, Princess Di and the pharaoh
Echnaton, but his main topic is
GOD. In this briskly-paced tour-de-force,
Lütz once again poses the question of
questions: Is there a God? Or do we have
to spend our entire lives in a senseless
world? Questions of modern physics are
fair game, as is the theory of evolution or
research into the human brain. But what
really makes this a satisfying read is that
he interrupts his reflections again and
again to present compelling stories of
people who wrestled with the subject of
God, and for certain reasons said YES or
NO to a benign creator of all things.
Manfred Lütz is a psychiatrist and
neurologist, but also a theologian. The
head physician of a Cologne hospital,
Lütz is also much in demand as a speaker
and talk show guest.
The comprehensive book on Jesus
by a leading international New Testament
theologian
The publication of Klaus Berger’s extensive,
accessible book on Jesus was the
international theological event in autumn
of 2004 for all Christians and all people
who want to find a way to God through
Jesus Christ. After the demythologizing of
Scripture in the 1950s and the admission
that “practically nothing“ had been scientifically
documented about Jesus of Nazareth,
Klaus Berger represents a new
generation of theologians who do not try
to rationalize all that is difficult or foreign
in the biblical accounts, but let them
stand as is.
Klaus Berger, Professor of New Testament
Theology at the University of
Heidelberg, enjoys an international reputation
as one of the leading experts on
the New Testament. The theologian is
considered a brilliant author, whose
many books and controversial articles
have sought to spark public debate time
and again.
The Surprising Book of Church Lists
The funniest book ever written about
the Church!
A book of lists in the tradition of Schott’s
Original Miscellany, but all about the
Church: an amazing collection of religious
world records, curiosities, miracles,
and facts: from the best-smelling kinds of
incense to the popes with the most “output,”
to the strictest monasteries (and
the most fun-loving ones too). The oddest
miracle healings, the sexiest parts of the
Bible, etc. etc.
This is a funny but also very informative
book about the over 2,000 year-old
Catholic Church. Even the non-Catholic
reader will enjoy the chance to “peek
through the keyhole” at a whole new
world.
Author and journalist Peter Seewald,
a converted Catholic, has written for
Stern, Der Spiegel, and the Süddeutsche
Zeitung.
