BVP-E30 SeriesExperience the Superb Picture Quality ofSony's 14-bit SDTV Portable CamerasThe BVP-E30P/E30WSP digital portablecameras are the next generation of Sony'sBVP Series. Specifically designed for evengreater picture quality and enhanced operationalconvenience, there are two differentcameras available: the BVP-E30P 4:3 modeland the BVP-E30WSP 16:9/4:3 switchablemodel. Both models use lead-free solder andno halogenated flame-retardants are usedin the printed wiring boards, making theBVP-E30P/E30WSP highly eco-friendlycameras.At the heart of the outstanding picture performancedelivered by the BVP-E30 Series are thefield-proven Power HAD EX CCDs and atotally new 14-bit A/D conversion circuit. Thesecore devices offer switchable operationbetween progressive and interlace scanningwhile also giving excellent sensitivity, noise, andsmear performance. A range of sophisticatedfeatures is incorporated in the BVP-E30 Series, providing highly creative yet easy-to-usefunctions. In addition, the BVP-E30 Serieshas outstanding system versatility. When combinedwith the Sony CA-590P Camera Adaptorand CCU-590P or CCU-790P Camera ControlUnit, both models integrate seamlessly intocurrent Sony camera systems from the verybasic to the most complex. What's more, the BVP-E30 Series is compatible with theWLL-CA55 Wireless Camera Transmitter, providingthe exceptional mobility to cover liveevents without the hassle of cables. With excellent performance, a range of sophisticatedfeatures, and system versatility,BVP-E30 Series digital portable camerasare an ideal and affordable solution for the originationof a wide range of SDTV programmesin the studio and for outside broadcasts.2

FeaturesPower HAD EX CCDand an Innovative LSIExcellent Picture QualityPower HAD EX CCDsThe BVP-E30 Series is equipped withthree state-of-the-art 2/3-inch SonyPower HAD EX CCDs for enhancedhorizontal resolution of 900 TV lines. This CCD imager also achieves ahigh sensitivity of F11, an excellentS/N ratio of 65 dB (typical) anda remarkably low smear level of-145 dB – allowing the BVP-E30Series to achieve spectacular pictureseven in the most difficult shootingenvironments.14-bit A/D ConversionThe BVP-E30 Series incorporates a high-resolution 14-bitA/D conversion circuit so that images captured by thePower HAD EX CCDs are processed with four timesthe precision of 10-bit A/D converters. In particular, thishigh-resolution A/D conversion allows the contrast to bereproduced more faithfully in both mid-to-dark-tone andbright areas of the picture.Advanced Digital Signal Processing (ADSP)The ADSP of the BVP-E30 Series uses morethan 30 bits in its nonlinear process, minimisingrounding-off errors to maintain the high quality of thePower HAD EX CCDs. The ADSP also enableshighly sophisticated image controls, such as kneesaturation, adaptive highlight control and multi-matrixfunctions.Stable Image CorrectionThanks to the inclusion of the 14-bit A/D converter, functions such as white balance, 3D white shading, and linear saturation can be digitally corrected, allowing for greater stability. For example, theBVP-E30 Series replaces the traditional useof vertical and horizontal saw-tooth and parabolawaveforms for white-shading correction with digital3D white-shading correction. A digital 3D multi-zonesystem, using numerous data points over the raster, creates a smooth correction topography that canhandle the variations over many more lens types.Lens, viewfinder and camera adaptor are optional3

Creative Image ControlKnee Saturation ControlTraditionally, shooting very bright portions ofan object (such as key light reflections from aperson's forehead) can often reduce coloursaturation and change the hue. The BVP-E30Series adopts a knee saturation control functionin which this 'wash-out' effect onsaturation and hue change is reduced to aminimum, providing a far more natural colourreproduction in areas of high light.Low Key SaturationWith conventional cameras, low-light areascan be subject to a reduction in saturation. This can result in the colour in these areasbeing “washed out”. The low key saturationfunction on the BVP-E30 Series eliminatesthis problem by optimising the amplification ofcolour saturation at low light levels, providingmore natural colour reproduction.Knee Saturation OffKnee Saturation OnLow Key Saturation OffLow Key Saturation OnAdaptive Highlight Control(Auto Knee Mode)In conventional cameras, only a single knee-point/slope isavailable for control over highlights. The BVP-E30 Series, however, provides multiple knee-points/slopes for superboverexposure control. The camera detects the highly-litareas of a scene and automatically sets and optimisesmultiple knee points/slopes accordingly. This allows thereproduction of extremely difficult images (such as aninterior scene with a brightly sunlit window) with muchmore overexposure latitude. This function applies onlyto input video levels in excess of the knee point; themiddle and low luminance parts of the video signal areunaffected.Multi-Matrix FunctionThe multi-matrix function of the BVP-E30 Series allows colouradjustments to be applied over the colour range specified bythe operator. The colour spectrum is divided into 16 areas ofadjustment, where the hue and/or saturation of each area canbe modified. This function is especially useful when only the hueof certain colours needs to be adjusted for special-effects work.Input signal levelWhite clipAuto slopeknee point nknee point 3knee point 2knee point 1knee point 0Output signal levelKnee Curve Image4

Enhanced Vertical Detail(Non-Additive Mix)In conventional cameras, vertical detail signals arecreated using the Y-channel, G-channel or, morecommonly, the R/G channels combined. Each methodhas its limitations, such as when the colour channelselected to create the detail signal is at a low level. TheBVP-E30 Series uses an adaptive image-enhancementmethod. This creates detail signals from each of theR/G/B components of the video signal, comparesthem, and then automatically selects the channel withthe highest contrast level for use as the detail signal(Non-Additive Mix). This avoids the conventionalrestrictions of image enhancement observed above. The BVP-E30 Series can automatically correct theenhanced vertical detail but, if required, operators maymanually select from the Y, G, or R/G image enhancementmodes.Enhanced Vertical Detail(Non-Additive Mix) OffEnhanced Vertical Detail(Non-Additive Mix) OnAdaptive Detail Control OffAdaptive Detail Control OnMulti-matrix OffMulti-matrix OnLow Light ShootingThe BVP-E30 Series offers two convenient functionsfor capturing clear images in low-light environments –a slow shutter mode and gain function – which canbe used separately or together. The slow shutter modeallows the charge accumulation period of the CCDto be extended to seven frames. The gain functionallows the camera gain to be boosted to +42 dB.When used together, the camera offers a minimumillumination of 0.035 lx.Adaptive Detail ControlThe adaptive detail control automatically optimises theamplitude of the detail signal for high-contrastpicture edges. It also eliminates digital aliasing effects, offering very “natural” image enhancement duringscenes in which there are severe changes in contrast.Triple Skin Tone Detail ControlThe BVP-E30 Series Skin Tone Detail function enablescontrol of image enhancement within user-specifiedcolour tones. The BVP-E30 Series allows enhancementto be set independently for up to three distinctcolour and/or hue ranges. Skin Tone Detail correctionis conventionally used to reduce the amount of detailcontrol in areas of skin tone. With the BVP-E30 Series, correction is not restricted to skin tone and can beapplied to any area of colour. Image enhancementwithin the three areas can be increased or decreasedrelative to the overall image enhancement of a givenscene.Electronic Soft FocusThe BVP-E30 Series' electronic soft focus appliesa similar effect to that of an optical soft-focus filter -but in a much more convenient way. Rather thanincreasing the level of the detail signal, this functionreduces it - providing a picture that is "softer" thanthat achieved when detail is switched off completely.Electronic soft focus is also effective when used inconjunction with skin-tone detail to only change thesharpness within a specific colour or hue range.5

Operational Convenience1 Electronic and OpticalCC FilterThe BVP-E30 Series cameras comeequipped with electronic Colour Correction, which replaces the need for opticalColour Correction (CC) filters. So in thecase of the BVP-30P, all the filters in the filterwheel can be Neutral Density (ND)types, providing the operator with greaterflexibility in depth of field and exposurecontrol. The BVP-E30WSP camera hasdual filter wheels with both ND and CCfilters, which gives operators the choiceof correcting colour temperature opticallyor electronically, according to their needs. The filter of the BVP-E30WSP is servocontrolled, while the BVP-E30P isequipped with a manual filter wheel.2 Assignable SwitchThe BVP-E30 Series has a dedicated'assignable switch' available for functionsfrequently used in the field.Located near the filter wheel dial, thisswitch allows functions such as 5600KOn/Off, 4:3/16:9 mode selection(BVP-E30WSP only), and ATW On/Offto be assigned as required. Addingfurther operational convenience, thereturn viewfinder and intercom buttonslocated on the camera handle can beassigned to the servo zoom in/outfunction*. Assignment of all of theabove functions is implemented via themenu system.* Only lenses with a digital interface supportthis function.122 233 Ergonomic HandleA newly designed carrying handle offersimproved operator comfort and ensuresoptimum balance of the camera. Thehandle is made of light but highly durabledie-cast material and includes a non-slipleather finish. In addition, the sophisticateddesign allows easy operation when thecamera is docked with a camera adaptor, dockable VTR, and even with a studio-typelens and large viewfinder.4 Auto Tracing White Balance(ATW)5 File Operation UsingMemory Stick MediaCardThe BVP-E30 Series incorporatesthe Sony Memory Stick system forthe storage and recall of setupparameters. This is an effective,easy-to-use system for storingand recalling camera parameters forindividual scenes or the individualpreferences of a camera operator, including the settings of assignableswitches. The BVP-E30 Series features a convenientAuto Tracing White Balance (ATW)function, which automatically adjusts whitebalance as lighting conditions change.ATW is useful when shooting in rapidlychanging lighting conditions, such aswhen moving from indoor to outdoorlocations.6

32175466 Adjustable Shoulder PadThe position of the shoulder pad on theBVP-E30 Series cameras can be easilyadjusted without using a screwdriver- both forwards and backwards - toalways provide the operator with acomfortable and well-balanced cameraposition, even when docked with arange of lenses or camera adaptors.7 Backlit Rear PanelThe rear panel of the CA-590Pis backlit, allowing operators to seeswitch positions in dark environments.A versatile intercom system includesindependent engineering and productiontalkback, two-channel programmeaudio and tracker talkback.5 6 77
