Adaptive Highlight ControlThe MSW-970 camcorder provides multipleknee-points/slopes for superior overexposure control.The camcorder analyzes the highlight areas of a scene andautomatically sets and optimizes multiple kneepoints/slopes accordingly. This enables the reproductionof extremely difficult images (such as an interior scene thatincludes a brightly sunlit window) with much moreoverexposure latitude. This enhances the capability ofSkin Tone Detail correction - enabling one color selectionto be used for reducing the detail level of skin color, andtwo other selections to be used for either increasing ordecreasing the detail level of two other objects.Variable Black Gamma RangeThe Variable Black Gamma Range function allows for fineadjustment of tonal reproduction in the shadow area. Thisfeature can help to bring out details from the dark parts ofthe picture without affecting mid-tones while maintainingthe absolute black level. The variable range is LOW, LowMID, High MID, and HIGH.Multi-matrix ONSimulated imageElectronic Soft FocusThe Electronic Soft Focus included in the camcorder appliesan effect similar to using an optical soft-focus filter – but in amuch more convenient way. Electronic Soft Focus uses thedetail signal to reduce, rather than increase, the sharpnessof the picture. By subtracting the detail signal from theoriginal signal (as opposed to adding it as in conventionalimage enhancement), Electronic Soft Focus is able toprovide a picture that is “softer” than that achieved whendetail is switched off completely. Electronic Soft Focus canbe used in conjunction with Skin Tone Detail to change onlythe sharpness within a specific color or hue range.Color Temperature ControlIt is possible to dial in the required color temperature ofthe camera. The overall color balance of the picture canbe changed to make it warmer or cooler. This feature canbe used very creatively, particularly in scenes with mixedcolor lighting.7

Metadata handlingUMID* 1 RecordingThe UMID is a globally unique identifier for created picture,audio, and data material. The MSW-970 automaticallygenerates and records UMID information on tape at everyscene change. By adding UMID information during theacquisition process, it is far easier to search for materialduring editing and archiving. Sony supports UMID as wellas Extended UMID* 2 for further operational convenience.*1 UMID is recognized as a standard under SMPTE 330M.*2 Extended UMID adds signature metadata, time, positioning, and userinformation to the Basic UMID.Tele-File TMSystemThe Sony Tele-File system stores and recalls various typesof production data, such as shot data and shot marks, ontoand from a cassette label with a built-in memory IC. TheMSW-970 camcorder is equipped with a Tele-Filereader/writer module as standard, allowing for thisinformation to be managed electronically.
