FreeSpeak ® Digital Wireless Intercom SystemsInternal MenusA variety of beltpack menus areaccessible via the display using the scrolland enter buttons. Audio options such asheadset levels, microphone levels, andlocal sidetone can all be adjusted. Thethresholds of the alerts for low batterystrength can be set by the user.Answer-backThe beltpack has an answer-backcapability, using the large center buttonon the front of the beltpack. The answerbackkey can be used to answer anyincoming call to the beltpack, even ifthere is no identification label assignedto that caller. The caller can then beanswered and conversed with bypressing and holding the answer-backkey. The label of the caller appears onthe display above this key.PowerThe FreeSpeak beltpack is poweredwith a clip of four rechargeable AA sizeNiMH batteries. They will power thebeltpack for approximately 8-10 hours ofcontinuous use. Disposable Alkaline AAbatteries can also be used. The beltpackscan be charged in two ways. First, byusing the beltpacks internal chargercircuitry, allowing NiMH batteries tobe charged while still in the beltpack.Secondly, by using the specificallydesigned 5-way multi-bay batteryrecharger allowing standby rechargeablebattery packs to be available. This allowsthe continued use of the beltpackswhile the next set of batteries are beingcharged.Connection and CoverageThe connection between the FreeSpeakbeltpack and the heart of the system(either the Base Station or E-Que card)is made through the Active Antennas, where the receive and transmit functionstake place. Each Active Antennasupports up to five full-duplex wirelessconnections with FreeSpeak beltpacksin one coverage area. By co-locatingadditional Active Antennas, more than5 beltpacks can be supported in aparticular area. The omni-directional coverage areamay be up to 800 ft (50 to 150m typical)in radius, although typical distances inproduction environments range fromapproximately 160 to 640 ft (50 to 200m). 4-pair screened CAT-5 cable is usedto connect the Active Antennas, eitherdirectly to the two antenna ports on thebase, or via a 5-way splitter unit. Locallypowered Antennas may be located up to3,200 ft (1,000 m) away or 800 ft (250 m)when centrally powered from the basestation. The E-Que card does not powerits antennas centrally, but the splitter unitcan be powered to centralize the powerneeded for the antennas.Programmable Pushbutton 1with built-in rotary level control• Turn to adjust volumefor audio route 1• Depress Pushbutton 1to activate audio route 1• Depress Pushbutton 1and hold then depressPushbutton 3 to send a callalert to audio route 1Talk and Listen LED talliesfor audio routes 1, 2 and 3Programmable Pushbutton 3can also be used as a Reply key• Depress Pushbutton 3to activate audio route 3Power-On SwitchProgrammable in built headsetlimiter to protect userHeadset Connection (XLR-4M)Programmable Pushbutton 2with built-in rotary level control• Turn to adjust volumefor audio route 2• Depress Pushbutton 2to activate audio route 2• Depress Pushbutton 2and hold then depressPushbutton 3 to send a callalert to audio route 2Internal antenna - no problemswith a fragile aerial that couldeasily bend or break offHigh-contrast, back-lit LCDgraphical user interface forquick and easy operationMenu facility for quick andeasy key configurationConnection to battery charger3

FreeSpeak ® Digital Wireless Intercom SystemsFreeSpeakBase Station with BeltpacksThe FreeSpeak base station serves asthe heart of the wireless communicationsystem for all digital wireless beltpackusers. All wired and wirelesscommunications flow through the basestation. Each wireless beltpack and wiredintercom connection on the rear panelhas its own full-duplex port, and the voicecommunication from each is sampled, mixed, and re-routed throughout thesystem as desired. The base station supports up to 20wireless beltpacks, with a front-panelvacuum fluorescent display showingstatus and battery information. Eachbeltpack has its own timeslot and canbe individually addressed by the base, allowing multiple combinations ofbeltpack-to-beltpack and small-groupconversations to happen simultaneously.Highly ProgrammableFreeSpeak is highly programmable withsoftware menus on the base, accessiblevia the display and a push-to-enter rotaryencoder. Alternatively the base stationand beltpacks can be programmed by thePC-based software and then uploaded tothe system via a standard CAT-5 Ethernetcable. All aspects of the beltpacks, the rear-panel connectors, creation ofcommunication routes and groups can beconfigured to meet the user’s needs. Eachbeltpack, group and rear-panel connectorcan be labeled with a 5-character name, which appears on the base station andbeltpack displays. Relative audio levelsamong beltpacks, and input and outputlevels for the wired connections are alsounder software control.Registering Beltpacksto the Base StationEven in the most crowded RFenvironments, FreeSpeak remainsa closed system to interference andeavesdropping. Each beltpack’s uniqueID is registered with the base station andonly those beltpacks that are registeredcan communicate with the base station.Connectivity withWired CommunicationsThe system has 4-wire and party-lineintercom connectivity on the rear panelof the FreeSpeak base station. This allowscommunication with other wired intercomsystems.• Two party-line connectors(with loop-through)• Four 4-wire connections(transformer-isolated input/output)• Program feed input• Stage announce output• Stage announce relay outputFreeSpeak, Base StationFeatures at a Glance• License-free 1.8 - 1.9 GHz DECToperations• Supports up to 20 wireless beltpacks• Point-to-point and small group wirelesscommunications• Creates user placed coverage zoneswith up to 10 remote antennas• 10 LED active antenna indicators• Locate active antennas up to3,200 ft (1,000 m) from base station• Create, name, and assign groups• Two party-line and five 4-wireconnectors• Frequency and channel-hoppingtechnology automatically finds clearspectrum• Interrupted fold-back (IFB)functionality for on screen talents• 5 wireless party-line groups• Party-line call alert functionality4

FreeSpeak ® Digital Wireless Intercom SystemsFreeSpeak IntegraFreeSpeak Integrated WirelessThe FreeSpeak Beltpack is designedto seamlessly integrate with theClear-Com Eclipse Matrix Systems bydirectly fitting a Cell Controller card(E-Que card) into the matrix frames. The E-Que card provides connectivitybetween the beltpacks and any numberof ports within the matrix system, therefore creating a truely seamlessenvironment. This method allows upto 40 wireless beltpacks (dependingon environment) to communicate on awireless system.FreeSpeak cellular auto-roamingtechnology enables beltpacks tocontinuously detect and automaticallyselect the best connection to the matrixvia the Active Antennas. In addition,FreeSpeak provides a role-basedoperation so that any beltpack can beswitched to use the key settings saved fora particular user type or role.FreeSpeak IntegratedWireless ArchitectureFreeSpeak Integrated Wireless operatesusing a cellular network of DECT 1.8-1.9GHz Active Antennas that are locatedaround the production environment. TheActive Antennas are connected directly tothe Eclipse Matrix and provide a radio cellsupporting up to 5 full-duplex beltpackusers. An Antenna Splitter can connect to5 Active Antennas. To add users, simplyadd another Antenna, which connectsdirectly back to the matrix that maybe 3,200 ft (1,000m) away using aCAT-5 connection – no special RFcabling is required. The rear of the E-Que has 8 x RJ45connectors. The Eclipse ConfigurationSoftware (ECS) can run the E-Que intwo modes: Direct or Splitter. In directmode, all 8 RJ-45s are available for directconnection of Active Antennas. In Splittermode, two RJ45 connectors are availablefor connection to PD2203 AntennaSplitters supporting up to five ActiveAntennas. The other RJ45 connectorscannot work antennas. All antennas andsplitters will require local power fromsupplied AC adaptors.FreeSpeak Integra, IntegratedWireless at a Glance• License-free 1.8 - 1.9 GHz DECToperation• No frequency management required• Up to 40 users per E-Que card(depending on the environment)• Up to 4 E-Que cards can be used in onematrix (expanding up to 40 antennaper system)• Up to 200 pre-set roles can be defined inthe ECS management system• Up to 800ft (50 to 150m typical)range under good radio frequencyconditions.
