IN THE GÖTEBORG REGION 09<br />

This report is based on statistics from the Swedish<br />

Institute for Growth Policy Studies (ITPS), Statistics<br />

Sweden (SCB) and input from the 13 municipalities in<br />

the <strong>Göteborg</strong> <strong>Region</strong>. The 13 municipalities are:<br />

DEFINITIONS<br />

FOREIGN OWNED COMPANy A company is defined as<br />

foreign owned, in this context, if more than half of the<br />

company’s voting rights are controlled by a foreign owner.<br />

If the company belongs to a company group where<br />

the mother company, of this group, is foreign owned,<br />

this company is also considered foreign owned. If the<br />

company has several owners, it is the highest ranked<br />

owner in the company’s hierarchy (meaning the mother<br />

company, which in turn does not control more than 50%<br />

of the voting rights in some other company) that determines<br />

the nationality of the company.<br />

MERGER The union or joining together of two or more<br />

companies.<br />

FOREIGN OWNED COMPANIES 5<br />

ACqUISITION A company buy-out of another company.<br />

jOINT vENTURE A business project where two or more<br />

companies join together, often forming a new joint company,<br />

to manage the project.<br />

NEW ESTABLISHMENT A company is considered a new<br />

establishment when activities are either newly started or<br />

when activities are re-started after having been inactive<br />

for at least two years. A change in neither company ownership<br />

nor legal form, qualify as a new establishment.<br />

Statistics concerning foreign ownership are volatile. This<br />

document, therefore, should be used as a reference or<br />

guide with the understanding that not all company changes<br />

can be reflected. Moreover, the branch sector codes<br />

applied, in this context, are representative of the activities<br />

in the company’s regional office and/or its largest operation<br />

in the <strong>Göteborg</strong> <strong>Region</strong>, and thus are not always<br />

representative of the activities of the company group as<br />

a whole.<br />

HEAD OFFICE The number of foreign owned companies<br />

with a head office in the <strong>Göteborg</strong> <strong>Region</strong> is nearly<br />

1,400. Head office constituting the registered office of<br />

the company where activities are organized from. This<br />

includes Scandinavian, Nordic and General Head office.
