Name ________________________________11For thousands of years, peopleliving at northern latitudes had no ideahow high up the Aurora Borealis waslocated. Before the advent ofphotography in the 1880's, auroralobservers tried to determine the height ofaurora by the method of triangulation.One of the earliest of thesemeasurements was made by the Frenchscientist Jean-Jacques d'Ortous deMairan between 1731 and 1751. Fromtwo stations 20 km apart, observersmeasured the angles A and B betweenthe ground and a specific spot on anaurora. From the geometry of thetriangle, they estimated that aurora’sheight was between 650 - 1,000 kmabove the ground.
