The wintersemester extends from October 1 to March 31, the summer semester fromApril 1 to September 30. However, the actual teaching periods are shorter,stretching from mid-October to mid-February in the winter semester <strong>an</strong>dfrom mid-April to mid-July in the summer semester. During the interimsemester break periods, usually, no courses are taught <strong>an</strong>d students studyfor exams or undertake internships. <strong>International</strong> Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)/Diplôme du Baccalauréat<strong>International</strong> (BI)The University of Freiburg accepts the IB/BI <strong>as</strong> higher education entr<strong>an</strong>cequalification if it w<strong>as</strong> acquired on the b<strong>as</strong>is of at le<strong>as</strong>t 12 sequential years ata school with full-time instruction <strong>an</strong>d if it fulfills several other requirements. The course includes bothl<strong>an</strong>guage instruction <strong>an</strong>d general education instruction.Although the University of Freiburg does not have its own Studienkolleg, <strong>an</strong>arr<strong>an</strong>gement with the Studienkolleg of the University of Heidelberg allowsapplic<strong>an</strong>ts to complete the course there. However, applic<strong>an</strong>ts for admissionto Freiburg must apply directly to the University of Freiburg (see the section“<strong>Applying</strong> for Admission to the Studienkolleg”). To gain admission to the Studienkolleg in Heidelberg, you must provideevidence of adv<strong>an</strong>ced Germ<strong>an</strong>-l<strong>an</strong>guage skills. Your skills mustcorrespond to at le<strong>as</strong>t level C1 in the Common Europe<strong>an</strong> Frameworkof Reference for L<strong>an</strong>guages (CEFR).16
