Alumni Spotlight:
Campbell lodge boys’ Home
Father raymond nieman founded Campbell lodge Boys’ Home in 1958
as a residential alternative for neglected or dependent young men. since
its inception, over 1,500 young men have called Campbell lodge home.
The organization provides a year-round residential facility for pre-adolescent
and adolescent boys aged ten to eighteen.
The lodge is proud of a long lasting and sustained relationship with
Covington Catholic High school. For many years, all the young men
who lived at the Campbell lodge Boys’ Home attended either newport
Central Catholic or Covington Catholic.
Beyond a long-standing relationship with Covington Catholic, Campbell
lodge Boys’ Home also boasts four current staff members and two current board members who are CCH alums. Included
in this impressive line-up is executive director Barry Jones (’91), matt lanham (’96), michael Johannemann (’98) and
nick Dikeos (’01) and board members nate
roedig (’91) and michael Bessler (’91). since its
beginning in 1958, the Campbell lodge Boys’
Home has had at least one Covington Catholic
alumnus serving on the board, working on the
staff or donating to the lodge.
reflecting on his time working for the Boys’
Home, Barry Jones said, “When I started
here nine years ago, there were only sixteen
employees. now we have forty. The Campbell
lodge Boys’ Home has grown and changed
substantially, and I credit some of that change
to the experiences that many of the staff had at
Covington Catholic. We came to work here with
a deep respect for an all – male environment
and the potential that it provides to
create camaraderie and brotherhood.
We grew up in that environment at
Covington Catholic and want the same
for the boys here. We would like for
this to be a safe place where they can
learn to trust one another.”
Barry also added, “We value the relationship
that we continue to have with
Covington Catholic. several of our
major donors are graduates, including
some of the young men who lived at
the home while attending CCH.”
CCH is proud of our history and our
continued connections with the Campbell
lodge Boys’ Home.

Dear alumni,
Fall is presently very much in evidence
with the leaves changing, a chill in the air, and the
appearance of autumn decorations. The changing
of the seasons also coincides with the end of the
1st quarter for our learning community. as our
students work on their studies, foster their faith
and make friends, the faculty and administration
continue to find ways to improve our methods of
preparing our Colonels for post-secondary success
and the fulfillment of the complete faith-based life
which lies ahead of them. It is our belief that every
activity in which our students partake, be it in the
chapel, the classroom, on the stage, during freeperiods,
or on the field of play, present teaching
and learning opportunities. These are experiences that they will
remember and can serve as a positive influence for the remainder
of their lives. Keeping this in mind, I thought it might be
instructive to share with you a typical day in the life of a Colonel.
at 7:10 am, on a Friday morning a few weeks into
the new school year, I have just spent the last several minutes
mingling with our students in the cafeteria area, where they
gather to study or socialize prior to the beginning of their school
day. I then join them in attending our weekly Friday mass in
the chapel, where alumni, students, faculty, and parents come
to pray together as a community. This is just one of the many
opportunities that exist for our young men to form a closer bond
between themselves and god.
upon ascending to the 2nd floor I again walk among
students, many still attached to their I-pods, hanging out by
their lockers, interacting with each other and taking care of
any unfinished homework that remains from the previous
night. as I glance into each classroom I pass, it is not unusual
to discover teachers hard at work tutoring students who require
extra attention. I am also gratified to see many students taking
advantage of our library/resource Center, using our new pC
workstations to complete assignments or working on projects.
on the 3rd floor members of mr. Krumpelbeck’s Biology
class’ B.u.g. Club are busy at work taking care of their animals,
learning responsibility firsthand by tending to their well-being
and care. across the hall, mr. parrott has been teaching our 8th
grade algebra I Honors course to our local feeder parish students
since 7:30am, giving them a head start on future academic
pursuits.
The onset of a new school day is always exciting and
invigorating, full of expectations and anticipation. It is rewarding
to see our students so full of life. They are enjoying each other’s
friendships as they learn together and progress through another
day, moving closer to realizing and achieving their goals, hopes,
and dreams.
There is a distinct buzz in the air on this particular day,
as the students progress through their seven courses of study. It
is a football Friday and everyone is excited about taking on our
neighborhood rivals, the Beechwood tigers, on the gridiron
later on this evening. During their respective lunch periods, our
Covington Catholic Journal 3
students spontaneously break out with the school
fight song, fueling our school spirit for later in the
evening.
During those seven periods I note:
mr. Haders’ art room is one of our more popular
and active classes. He offers constructive criticism
and encouragement to the creators of the different
“masterpieces” being produced over the course of
many weeks.
mr. Kaelin speaking german to the german III
students and mrs. rasp working in the language
lab with her spanish II students, both teaching
invaluable second language skills to our students.
CaD/graphic Design lab being utilized to
its full potential with enthusiasm by our students
immersing themselves in the designs they are creating.
mr. Hertsenberg teaching our seniors the most
important life skills – moral choices and the values of free will
relating to real life situations.
mr. parrott, mr. lubbers, and other teachers utilizing
our smart board technology. These educational devices allow our
teachers to interact with content on the board, using their finger
as a mouse, and offer the ability to physically overwrite material
appearing on the board through the use of digital “ink.”
The majority of our students participate in extracurricular
activities after school—they work on a project, prepare
for a play, practice for an upcoming game or season. on this day
however our students forego many of those after-school activities
and head to Bayer and Becker engineers (Jay Bayer’s son John
is a senior), where a pep rally, organized by our student senate,
has been scheduled. over 300 students turn out to partake in
the hot dogs and soda pop, while tossing Frisbees and footballs,
before applying their war paint in support of their football
team – it is Braveheart night!!! The rally concludes with the
CovCath entourage, the envy of the state, demonstrating their
renowned spirit, marching the two miles to mcnabb stadium in
Fort mitchell, where they root our team on to victory. They are
carrying on of a tradition passed down from one class to another -
a big part of your own personal Covington Catholic legacy.
This scene is, for the most part, reenacted on a daily
basis. It is an awesome sight - the variety of students with
different backgrounds, marked by each individual’s distinctive
personality and interests, with the sights and sounds of a typical
school day at CovCath. I consider myself to be so fortunate to be
a small part of these boys’ most influential years, allowing them
to maximize the fulfillment that you yourself experienced during
your days here on the campus of Covington Catholic
High school.
Covington Catholic seeks to be true to our
Marianist Catholic roots and the call to
love our neighbors. A new manifestation
of this call will be found in the student
Philanthropy Club, which had its first
meeting in October. The Philanthropy Club
comes as a result of a multi-year study by
the Mayerson Foundation, in partnership
with Northern Kentucky University.
Originally intended as a college course,
this club has now spread to high schools
due to its overwhelming success at colleges
and universities. The club creates the
opportunity for students to receive funds
which they will in turn award to a local nonprofit
in the form of a grant.
This year’s grant money, given to
Covington Catholic by Mr. Dennis Doyle,
will total $1,000. Students in the club will
be charged with contacting, researching,
and ultimately deciding on a local 501
c3 nonprofit organization that they deem
worthy to receive the funds. In the process,
students will make site visits, invite
speakers to come to campus, and engage
in advanced research on the viability,
sustainability, and effectiveness of each
organization. Club sponsor and religion
Covington Catholic is pleased to announce
the launching of its first “pre-professional”
club. The Engineering Club has already
met several times this year and is being
overseen by Mr. Charles Hartman and Mr.
Ryan Lubbers, teachers at CCH. Students
who participate in this club will have the
opportunity to meet professionals in several
fields of engineering, as well as architecture
and design. Mr. Hartman noted, “We have
so many guys who go into engineering and
the building trades. We want to encourage
these students to fully understand all that
these fields have to offer. We also hope
that more exposure will open students to
both the possibilities and challenges of
engineering.”
Philanthropy Club
teacher Rich Andolina says, “I hope this
will be more than a way for Covington
Catholic students to give to a local charity.
Our vision is that these students, who
one day will be in positions of influence
throughout Northern Kentucky, will learn
the benefits of philanthropy. They will
eventually sit on non-profit boards, serve
as directors of organizations and make
informed decisions for the betterment of
those who are less fortunate.” Students will
begin their research and discernment in the
spring of 2011. If you are affiliated with a
Engineering Club
Thus far three professionals, including
two alumni, have come in to speak with
CCH students. Mr. Eugene Rutz from the
University of Cincinnati came to present
engineering options available at UC. Mr.
Ben Barlage ’92 and Mr. Ben Eilerman
’98 came to speak about the connection
between architecture and engineering. They
also presented on AutoCAD and Revit,
two popular design programs that are
available to our students as a result of recent
technology upgrades.
In late October, the students were presented
with their own design challenge: given two
rolls of duct tape, they were asked to create
a new product. Their creations will be
local non-profit that you would like to be
considered for the grant, please contact
Mr. Andolina at randolina@covcath.org.
Engineering Club starts strong with 23 members and alumni support
judged by a panel at the end of the semester.
In the spring, CCH students that are part of
the club will have the opportunity to tour
the University of Cincinnati and shadow
students through a day of engineering
classes.
If you are interested in coming to speak
to the Engineering Club or have an
engineering opportunity for CCH students,
please contact Mr. Charles Hartman at
Log In to the Alumni Portal
CCH was thrilled to launch the new and
improved www.covcath.org this fall.
If you have not checked it out, please
do so! One of the most impressive new
features is the “alumni portal” which
allows alumni to update information
and connect with other alums. This
feature can be used to announce
reunions, network, and more. Alumni
received user IDs and passwords
to their home mailing addresses in
October. Please use this information
to log in and share your latest news.
Covington Catholic wants to keep in
touch with our alumni, and will be
offering even more ways to come back
and visit the school as we renovate the
Griffin Alumni Centre. If you need your
user ID and password, please contact
our alumni Coordinator annette
restle at arestle@covcath.org.
The Griffin Centre in need of some “TLC”
Covington Catholic received a generous donation for the creation of the “griffin alumni Centre” in 2009, which will be
housed in the former nazarene Church north of the CCH property. In order to make the griffin Centre hospitable for
school and alumni events, we would like to do some tlC and ‘sprucing up.’ If you have any of the following skills that
you would like to donate, please contact the Development office at 859-448-2247 or development@covcath.org.
• Painting
• Cleaning
• Light Construction / Carpentry
• Plumbing
• Electrical Work
a Homecoming reception at the griffin Centre was held on
october 23, before the varsity football game. We invited alumni
to come back and tour the building. several came through
looking at the space and the renderings of the potential improvements
to the facility. everyone was amazed at the size of
the building and the potential for alumni gatherings and other
events. Thanks to the boosters who provided food and drinks
and the alumni Committee that hosted the event.
‘marketing blitz.’
soon everyone in northern Kentucky
“He’s worth it: a Covington Catholic
increasingly on the chopping block for
many families, this campaign aims to
counteract that very line of thinking.
i’m worth it, he’s worth it, it was worth it:
a Covington Catholic Education
feeder school students began in early
october with a postcard inviting 6 th ,
7 th and 8 th graders to “be a colonel for a
day”. an enclosed “colonel card” is good
for free concessions and admissions to a
football and basketball game.
The blitz includes a great advertising
package with The enquirer and local
newspapers. Half page color ads in the
papers will help to promote the open
house and the high school placement
test. CCH will have internet banners
on nky.com. The messenger, a diocesan
publication, will carry a black and white
advertisement. a free radio ad on real
talk 1160am will air during university
of notre Dame football games. also
a donated digital billboard will help
promote the open house. look for it at
the 12th st. exit, southbound. all of this
advertising is a big investment but the
payoff promises to be higher enrollment,
strengthening our budget and allowing
for growth.
We hope that this message “He’s
worth it” also resonates with current
students and alums. Covington Catholic
graduates are being asked to reflect on
the value of their education with our
annual appeal, “It was worth it.” The
future of Covington Catholic depends
on the willingness of our past, present
and future students to exclaim loudly
“It’s worth it!”

1958 Robert Michael Morris has been cast in the new show
Running Wilde alongside Will Arnett and Kerri Russell on
the FOX network. He will be playing the role of Mr. Lunt, a
private secretary and former nanny to Will Arnett. The show
airs on Wednesday s at 9:30.
1961 The Class of 1961 had a grill out at Jerry Biedenharn’s
house on Sunday, September 19th. The menu included
some of Freddie’s famous ribs. Thanks to everyone that
came out. It was great to see you again!
1964 Edward J. Stambush was inducted into the Kentucky
Firefighters Hall of Fame on August 3 in Louisville, KY.
Stambush began his fire service career in 1958 as a Junior
Firefighter with the Bromley Fire Department at the age of
12. Later to be known throughout the NKY communities
he served as “Fireman Joe, “ Stambush was noted for
doing Fire and Life Safety Education Programs for the
fire departments of Edgewood, Erlanger, Point Pleasant,
Bellevue-Dayton, and Fire District One. He also led the
KFA’s public education movement to national prominence
during his 14 years as chair of that committee. After 52
years in the fire service, Stambush’s commitment to the
field of safety education has influenced many to take up this
cause. Without a doubt, Kentucky is a safer place due to
his effort.
1968 Jerome Schaper, Jr recently provided the following
information: “I retired from United States Postal Service
on Nov. 1, 2009, after 34 years as a clerk, the last 20 spent
at CVG Airport Mail Facility. I am spending my free time
selling on ebay and attending antique shows, military relic
shows and flea markets in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.”
Reunions:
1965
The Class of ’65 held its reunion over the weekend of Sept.
10-11. The festivities began with a golf outing on Friday
morning and was well attended. A stag was held on the night of the 10th at the Villa Hills Civic Center, and about 50 class members attended. On
Sat. Sept. 11, we met at the new school for a tour of the campus given by
Sue Finke. Our class then attended the game vs. Campbell County (which
the Colonels won!) and we were introduced to the crowd at halftime. That
evening we reconvened at the Drawbridge for a dinner dance with wives
and girlfriends. About 45 couples attended and a great time was had by all.
The waist lines have expanded, there is a bit less hair, the stories are a bit
grander, but after 45 years, our Colonel Pride has only grown.
1970 The class of ’70 held a stag Friday, Sept 10th at Covington
Catholic. There were about 65 to 70 alumni in attendance.
It was great to see so many Saturday afternoon, and a hand full of the class
attended the CCH vs. Campbell County football game. To kick the night
off, the Colonels beat the Camels 49-14! Later that evening, there was a
dinner at the Devou Park Golf Club House. A great night was had by all.
There were about 50 alumni in attendance. Thanks to the committee for
planning a great weekend!
1975 The class of ’75 had their 35th reunion on Friday, October
22nd , and Saturday, October 23rd , 2010.On Friday, 15
classmates went to beautiful Keeneland Race Course in Lexington and
enjoyed a day at the races. The weather was great and the luck was fair.
Jockey Robby Albarado (friend of Rick Lux) joined the group after the
races for some tailgating and pictures. On Saturday, the class attended the
Cov Cath vs. Dixie Home Coming Game (a 40 -36 CCH victory) and had a
party that evening at PEE WEE’s. Altogether, 45 classmates attended.
1980
We had a great weekend! Friday was spent golfing and
getting together at Dickmann’s sports cafe. Saturday
started with a prayer service with the football team. There was a victory
on the football field later in the day to make the weekend even sweeter.
The Colonels beat the Campbell County Camels 49-14. The weekend
concluded with a fantastic pig roast at Kroth’s farm courtesy of Dave
Kroth’s family. We had great attendance for the weekend. We offer a huge
thanks to Pat McGinnis, Dave Kroth and families for a great 30 yr reunion.
We have some commemorative cut crystal glasses still available. If you
would like one give Greg Moser a call at 513 608 6688.
1985 On September 11th , the class of ’85 celebrated our 25 th
year reunion by enjoying a Colonels football win over
Campbell County, highlighted by the chance to go out on the field at
halftime for a class photo at the 50 yard line. After the game, those who
attended the game gathered in the cafeteria for a post-game reception
where we met and heard the latest on the school’s activities from Principal
Bob Rowe. That evening, a large group of ’85 grads (and wives) enjoyed
a Reds walk-off win from the Cincinnati Bell Riverboat Deck at Great
American Ball Park. It was great to see everyone, as several had not seen
each other in many years… Special thanks to Aaron Fausz for traveling all
the way from Atlanta and to honorary grad Pat Coyne for traveling from St.
Louis. Kudos to David Geis for sporting the C-Coat (and having it fit) the
entire day. Most frequent comment was that many were surprised that we
already have guys in our class who have retired! Everyone who attended
looks forward to getting back together for the 30 year reunion, and we hope
that even more of our classmates can join us then.
1990
The class of ’90 chartered a bus and went to Keeneland
on October 9th. We had perfect weather and had a great
time. It was great catching up with some old classmates.
1995
On the weekend of October 8th & 9th, the Class of 1995
celebrated their 15-year reunion. On Friday night the guys
gathered to watch the CCH vs. Scott football game and then continued the
night at Pee-Wee’s, sharing some great laughs and memories. On Saturday
night, the guys joined the 1995 seniors from NDA in a joint dinner and
dancing event with their spouses at The Florentine in Florence. It was a
great event DJ’d by classmate Tim Gleason; a great time was had by all.
It was definitely fun seeing everyone again and we’re already looking
forward to our 20-year reunion in 2015!
2000
The class of ’00 celebrated their 10th year reunion the
weekend of October 23 and 24. The reunion was attended
by 50 alumni over the two day celebration. Friday night was spent at
Molly Malone’s in Covington catching up with old classmates. Saturday
the alumni watched the Cov Cath football team beat the little Colonels of
Dixie in a thrilling come from behind victory. After the game, the alumni
enjoyed a grill out and a corn hole tournament at the school cafeteria.
Thanks to all who helped make the reunion such a fun weekend!
Covington Catholic Journal 15
Our 5 year consisted of dollar beers down at The Beer
Sellar in Newport. We had a fairly good turn out and it was
great to see so many old faces. Some of the NDA girls from ’05 came over
to join us after their celebration in Mt. Adams. Big thanks to Travis Burns
for all of his help to make the 5 year reunion possible.

Annual Appeal Campaign:
October 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011 • Goal: $250,000
This year’s honorary chairs for the Annual Appeal are the
Summes. The Summe family sent all ten of their children to
Catholic schools. Their six sons attended Covington Catholic
between the years of 1978 and 1998. To do so required
sacrifice, but looking back the Summes all agree, “It was worth
it.” Chad, the youngest of the Summes, reflects on Covington
Catholic: “High School is a pivotal stage in one’s development
and sets the foundation for success. My time at CCH went
beyond just preparing me for my next step, attending the
United States Naval Academy; it provided me the tools to
succeed in life...spiritually, mentally, and physically.“
Please consider giving to this year’s annual appeal.
the need is greater than ever.
100% of funds raised
from the annual appeal
In the words of Mrs. Jane Summe, mother of ten and grandmother of thirty four:
“I can’t emphasize enough how important Catholic education is. I definitely agree that it was worth it.
We would have given up anything to afford the schools. We did it because Covington Catholic upheld what we
were teaching at home. I would see teachers like Dan Tieman going to mass on his lunch hour, dedicating his
life to the school, and I wanted my sons to be around men like that. “
Your gift will allow students with financial need to attend Covington Catholic but who cannot afford to pay full tuition to attend
Covington Catholic. One in every nine students receives financial aid to attend CCH. Put simply, without the annual appeal,
these students could not be Colonels. Gifts can be mailed directly to Covington Catholic c/o the Development
office or NOW donate online at www.covcath.org by clicking the “Annual Appeal” button.
this year Covington Catholic
offered $240,000 in tuition
assistance.
