Covington Catholic seeks to be true to our
Marianist Catholic roots and the call to
love our neighbors. A new manifestation
of this call will be found in the student
Philanthropy Club, which had its first
meeting in October. The Philanthropy Club
comes as a result of a multi-year study by
the Mayerson Foundation, in partnership
with Northern Kentucky University.
Originally intended as a college course,
this club has now spread to high schools
due to its overwhelming success at colleges
and universities. The club creates the
opportunity for students to receive funds
which they will in turn award to a local nonprofit
in the form of a grant.
This year’s grant money, given to
Covington Catholic by Mr. Dennis Doyle,
will total $1,000. Students in the club will
be charged with contacting, researching,
and ultimately deciding on a local 501
c3 nonprofit organization that they deem
worthy to receive the funds. In the process,
students will make site visits, invite
speakers to come to campus, and engage
in advanced research on the viability,
sustainability, and effectiveness of each
organization. Club sponsor and religion
Covington Catholic is pleased to announce
the launching of its first “pre-professional”
club. The Engineering Club has already
met several times this year and is being
overseen by Mr. Charles Hartman and Mr.
Ryan Lubbers, teachers at CCH. Students
who participate in this club will have the
opportunity to meet professionals in several
fields of engineering, as well as architecture
and design. Mr. Hartman noted, “We have
so many guys who go into engineering and
the building trades. We want to encourage
these students to fully understand all that
these fields have to offer. We also hope
that more exposure will open students to
both the possibilities and challenges of
engineering.”
Philanthropy Club
teacher Rich Andolina says, “I hope this
will be more than a way for Covington
Catholic students to give to a local charity.
Our vision is that these students, who
one day will be in positions of influence
throughout Northern Kentucky, will learn
the benefits of philanthropy. They will
eventually sit on non-profit boards, serve
as directors of organizations and make
informed decisions for the betterment of
those who are less fortunate.” Students will
begin their research and discernment in the
spring of 2011. If you are affiliated with a
Engineering Club
Thus far three professionals, including
two alumni, have come in to speak with
CCH students. Mr. Eugene Rutz from the
University of Cincinnati came to present
engineering options available at UC. Mr.
Ben Barlage ’92 and Mr. Ben Eilerman
’98 came to speak about the connection
between architecture and engineering. They
also presented on AutoCAD and Revit,
two popular design programs that are
available to our students as a result of recent
technology upgrades.
In late October, the students were presented
with their own design challenge: given two
rolls of duct tape, they were asked to create
a new product. Their creations will be
local non-profit that you would like to be
considered for the grant, please contact
Mr. Andolina at randolina@covcath.org.
Engineering Club starts strong with 23 members and alumni support
judged by a panel at the end of the semester.
In the spring, CCH students that are part of
the club will have the opportunity to tour
the University of Cincinnati and shadow
students through a day of engineering
classes.
If you are interested in coming to speak
to the Engineering Club or have an
engineering opportunity for CCH students,
please contact Mr. Charles Hartman at
