<strong>Covington</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> seeks to be true to our<br />
Marianist <strong>Catholic</strong> roots and the call to<br />
love our neighbors. A new manifestation<br />
of this call will be found in the student<br />
Philanthropy Club, which had its first<br />
meeting in October. The Philanthropy Club<br />
comes as a result of a multi-year study by<br />
the Mayerson Foundation, in partnership<br />
with Northern Kentucky University.<br />
Originally intended as a college course,<br />
this club has now spread to high schools<br />
due to its overwhelming success at colleges<br />
and universities. The club creates the<br />
opportunity for students to receive funds<br />
which they will in turn award to a local nonprofit<br />
in the form of a grant.<br />
This year’s grant money, given to<br />
<strong>Covington</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> by Mr. Dennis Doyle,<br />
will total $1,000. Students in the club will<br />
be charged with contacting, researching,<br />
and ultimately deciding on a local 501<br />
c3 nonprofit organization that they deem<br />
worthy to receive the funds. In the process,<br />
students will make site visits, invite<br />
speakers to come to campus, and engage<br />
in advanced research on the viability,<br />
sustainability, and effectiveness of each<br />
organization. Club sponsor and religion<br />
<strong>Covington</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> is pleased to announce<br />
the launching of its first “pre-professional”<br />
club. The Engineering Club has already<br />
met several times this year and is being<br />
overseen by Mr. Charles Hartman and Mr.<br />
Ryan Lubbers, teachers at CCH. Students<br />
who participate in this club will have the<br />
opportunity to meet professionals in several<br />
fields of engineering, as well as architecture<br />
and design. Mr. Hartman noted, “We have<br />
so many guys who go into engineering and<br />
the building trades. We want to encourage<br />
these students to fully understand all that<br />
these fields have to offer. We also hope<br />
that more exposure will open students to<br />
both the possibilities and challenges of<br />
engineering.”<br />
Philanthropy Club<br />
teacher Rich Andolina says, “I hope this<br />
will be more than a way for <strong>Covington</strong><br />
<strong>Catholic</strong> students to give to a local charity.<br />
Our vision is that these students, who<br />
one day will be in positions of influence<br />
throughout Northern Kentucky, will learn<br />
the benefits of philanthropy. They will<br />
eventually sit on non-profit boards, serve<br />
as directors of organizations and make<br />
informed decisions for the betterment of<br />
those who are less fortunate.” Students will<br />
begin their research and discernment in the<br />

Thus far three professionals, including<br />
two alumni, have come in to speak with<br />
CCH students. Mr. Eugene Rutz from the<br />
University of Cincinnati came to present<br />
engineering options available at UC. Mr.<br />
Ben Barlage ’92 and Mr. Ben Eilerman<br />
’98 came to speak about the connection<br />
between architecture and engineering. They<br />
also presented on AutoCAD and Revit,<br />
two popular design programs that are<br />
available to our students as a result of recent<br />
technology upgrades.<br />
In late October, the students were presented<br />
with their own design challenge: given two<br />
rolls of duct tape, they were asked to create<br />
a new product. Their creations will be<br />
local non-profit that you would like to be<br />
considered for the grant, please contact<br />

Engineering Club starts strong with 23 members and alumni support<br />
judged by a panel at the end of the semester.<br />
In the spring, CCH students that are part of<br />
the club will have the opportunity to tour<br />
the University of Cincinnati and shadow<br />
students through a day of engineering<br />
classes.<br />
