AREA FIREFIGHTERS ... who are taking the Firefighter I class had an opportunity to practice their skills
last week when an abandoned house in Rake was artificially filled with smoke. Rake Fire Chief Matt
Duve said that firefighters from departments in Forest City, Woden, Crystal Lake, Thompson and Rake
participated. The house, located at 302 1st St. SW, will be burned on March 31 in another practice
opportunity for area firefighters.
“Pass it Forward” During Extension Week
Iowa State University Extension
will celebrate Extension Week
throughout the state the week of
March 21-25. Extension is part of
an educational network supported
by Iowa State University, local
county governments and the United
States Department of Agriculture.
Every county in Iowa has an elected
extension council that decides
how local tax dollars are spent to
support ISU Extension educational
programs at the county level.
Extension Council members are
elected citizens around the county.
Winnebago County Council
members are: Sheryl Davids and
John Laflen of Buffalo Center; Julie
Hagenson, Mary Walk and Gary
Wunder of Thompson; Matt Storby
of Leland; Mary Peterson of Lake
Mills; Dona Paulson and H.P
Kobriger of Forest City.
The theme for Extension Week
is “It Starts with Each of Us”. The
Winnebago County Extension
Council and staff will be visiting
three communities throughout the
week promoting Extension and
encouraging residence to “Pass it
forward…An Act of Kindness.”
The council would like to encourage
people to do something kind for
someone to repay the good that has
happened to them. When that happens
you pass on the wooden nickel
asking them to do an act of kindness
and pass the nickel on.
Extension Council members and
staff will be at Johnson’s Food
Center in Buffalo Center on Tues.,
Another Month, Another Delay for Heritage Town Center
The low bidders say they’re still
on board, but the Heritage Town
Center project is stuck in limbo for
the third month in a row. Bids for
the project were unsealed at the
January Buffalo Center City
Council meeting, but the awarding
of contracts has been delayed several
times. The Council expected to
award the contracts at their meeting
last Wednesday, Marcy 9, but that
step was put on hold once again.
Project engineer Rick Hopper
explained that paperwork requests
from USDA Rural Development
have slowed things down, along
with issues brought up by the state
fire marshal. Hopper says the fire
marshal insists that a Type 1 hood
with fire suppression is needed for
any cooking done on a range in the
building’s kitchen. This equipment
would be prohibitively expensive
for the project, so HTC committee
chairman Rod Hansen says they
will most likely forego installing
ranges in the kitchen for the time
being.
Also at issue is whether the
installation of a fire wall, which
was being planned to reduce costs
of a sprinkler system, will actually
save any money. Hopper hopes to
have the remaining issues resolved
in about a week.
Hansen informed the council
that the combined total of the bids
is about $485,000, and that the
committe has thus far collected all
but about $45,000 of that amount.
He notes that about $77,000 in
addional funding has been pledged
to the project, and that the committee
can most likely call on donors
to collect about $40,000 of that
within a week.
This still leaves the possibility
of a shortfall, however, and Hansen
says USDA Rural Development
would like the city to authorize the
bank to make a construction loan of
up to $40,000. “I would not expect
that we are going to need a loan,”
said Hansen. The Council agreed to
authorize a loan with Farmers Trust
and Savings Bank.
Judy Wiedemeier of the Buffalo
Center Community Club addressed
the Council with two items for the
improvement of downtown. She
says the Community Club would
like to provide several garbage cans
for downtown and asked if the City
had any recommendations and if
the City would be willing to collect
the garbage. With the Council’s
approval, the Community Club
plans to look for suitable garbage
cans to purchase.
Wiedemeier also asked the
Council if they would consider
repairing rust damage on the City’s
street light poles, checking the electrical
outlets and painting the light
poles on Main Street black. She
noted that the improvements would
extend the life of the lights, make
Main Street look more appealing
and postpone the expense of buying
new street lights. The Council will
look into getting contractors to
repair and paint the lights.
Police Chief Pat Conroy requested
that the City approve a new
phone contract for the Police
Department, as the current service
provider does not offer a plan to
meet the department’s needs. He
also suggested terminating the
department’s fax line to save
money, as he no longer sees a need
for it. The council approved both
items.
The Council voted to fill a number
of summer employment positions
for the City. Hired for the girls
little league program were Amber
Paden and Becca Siemens. For the
boys little league program, the City
hired Sarah Paulson and Sue
Armstrong.
Cindy Bolie was hired as shelterhouse
caretaker. Kory Hobbs,
Kaylan Hobbs and Marty Schaefer
were hired as T-ball instructors. Jim
Hofbauer and David Bolie were
hired as mowers. Kim Ostermann
was hired as the consultant for the
Buffalo Center Swimming Pool,
and Sarah Paulson was hired as
manager at the pool.
The Council approved a building
permit and variance for Farmers
Trust and Savings Bank, who plans
to construct a 34’ x 33’ addition to
their building on Main Street.
A permit was approved for the
Buffalo Center Development
Corporation and Bison Limited to
demolish the Mr. K’s buildings
located on Main Street.
The Council also approved a
permit for Darrel Sonnenberg to
demolish a house and storage shed
located at 402 7th Ave. SW.
The Council approved the purchase
of three 8-foot picnic tables
and three 6-foot picnic tables for
South Park. Councilman Silber will
look into putting concrete curbing
around the South Park playground
equipment as edging.
The Council moved to replace
11 underwater lights at the swimming
pool at a cost of $12,100.
The Council also adopted the
2011-2012 budget.
are back! North Iowa’s musical production, Back to the 80’s: the Totally
Awesome Musical, tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High
School that graduated in the 1980’s, as remembered and seen through the
eyes of Corey Palmer, who is now a 30-something. There is the plot we all
National Ag Day
2011 – Honoring
“Homegrown
Security”
In the past few weeks, there has
been much talk and media coverage
about unrest in the Middle East
driving up the prices of fuel in the
U.S. There is a certain sense of vulnerability
when we realize events
that occur half a world away affects
our quality of life right here at
home... in our own backyard.
However, when it comes to food,
fiber and yes, biofuels, we suffer no
sense of vulnerability – Why?
Because, thanks to America’s farmers
and ranchers, we have what I
refer to as, “Homegrown Security.”
Food, fiber and alternative fuel
sources are affordable and abundant
right here in the United States.
Agriculture is the backbone of our
nation. Our ability to provide for
our own plus a significant percent
of the world’s growing population
is the envy of all other nations. For
this reason alone, it is appropriate
that we recognize farmers and
ranchers on National Ag Day,
which we celebrate March 15,
2011.
But let me make my point
stronger. The agriculture industry
has made significant progress in the
past century. That progress has
made the United States the most
self sufficient country in modern
civilization. Take for instance the
most common commodity - grown
in nearly every state of the union -
Corn…
In 73 years (the average length
of human life) agriculture has made
America so productive and secure
that its fundamentals are seemingly
invincible. In that time, corn has
become more than a food product
or sweetener. It is an alternative
fuel, a source for plastics and an
Banking Needs!

icon for the industry. But it is just
one of many as most commodities
have seen similar successes, technological
advances and alternative
uses.
Because of agricultural ingenuity,
we can feed, clothe and shelter
ourselves and provide life’s necessities
to all U.S. citizens at home
and to our armed forces worldwide.
Agriculture is the first line of
defense IN America. It is the first
line of defense OF America. We
owe the proud men and women
involved in agriculture an enormous
debt of gratitude.
I hope you will join me in making
good on that debt as I extend a
much deserved, “Thank You” to
America’s farmers and ranchers on
National Ag Day.
I, as well as the 715 USDA Farm
Service Agency (FSA) employees
in Iowa, understand and appreciate
the amount of work that farmers
and ranchers do on a daily basis to
protect our natural resources and
produce the nation’s supply of
food, fiber and fuel, and I encourage
consumers to learn more about
agriculture and the people involved
in the industry.
We never want to find ourselves
dependent on a foreign food supply.
It’s America’s farmers and ranchers
who make sure our nation stays
independent from the ground up.
And as long as America’s farmers
and ranchers remain steadfast in
their stewardship and productivity,
America will remain strong. Please
take time on National Ag Day to
show your appreciation for
American Agriculture… our
Homegrown Security.
Operation ReLeaf
Now Taking Orders
The Winnebago County
working with Alliant Energy and
the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources to host an Operation
ReLeaf event. Operation ReLeaf
allows people to purchase highquality,
potted trees for a greatly
discounted price. The WCCB is
orders for a May 4 distribution
date.
This year’s tree species include
honey locust, river birch, sugar
maple, service berry, white oak,
flowering crabapple, and burr oak.
All trees will be 6’-8’ tall, except
for the crabapples and service
berries, which may be a bit shorter.
Normally, these trees would sell for
$65-$75 a piece, but each tree only
costs $25 through the Operation
ReLeaf League program. Results
To order trees, atpeople
must first
THE DESTINATION DC ... organization, consisting of members of
the 8th grade class at North Iowa Middle School, teamed up with
WCTA earlier this year to deliver the 2011 telephone directories. It is
one of the many ways the students have been raising money for
their trip to the nation’s capital, scheduled for March 27 through April
8th Graders Help Deliver Directories
Students from three local
schools recently partnered with
Winnebago Cooperative Telecom
Association (WCTA) to deliver
directories in 11 area communities.
Each year, WCTA distributes
approximately 15,000 directories to
members. In the past, those deliveries
were made by mail, but a few
years ago, the idea came about to
partner with a local organization. It
started with just one organization in
Lake Mills, and has grown to
include the Lake Mills Community
School District., the Forest City
Community School District and the
Olson Fundraiser a Success in Garner
The Rodney Olson Fundraiser
held on Saturday, March 5 was a
success, according to event organizers
from Mat's Bar & Grill in
Garner. Many friends and relatives,
and former Thompson classmates
attended the event.
The Fundraiser was held to help
with Rodney's expenses for his
medical condition, which requires
him to utilize a wheelchair and
walker to mobilize. The event
raised nearly $8,000 with a raffle,
silent & live auction, bake sale, and
freewill offering baked ham dinner.
Donations have continued to come
due to the generosity of many people.
Many area businesses contributed
items for the auction, and
the event planners were very
pleased with the number of people
attending the event who contributed
their efforts (and money) for the
Olsons.
