A Success in
Buffalo Center
Four Buffalo Center churches
came together to provide Vacation
Bible School for the children of the
community the week of July 12-16.
First Reformed, United Methodist,
First Congregational, and
Bethlehem Lutheran worked
together, once again, to provide an
exciting learning time for the children.
This year’s theme was “Hero
Headquarters”, and the kids learned
that they can be heroes for God in
their everyday activities. Each
evening began at 5:30 p.m. with a
meal. The programming began at
6:00 p.m. with an opening where
three heroes showed up — Water
Woman, Pizza Man, and Mechanic
Mac — to teach the kids about
what heroes do. Every night had a
theme that the kids learned through
class time, games and crafts, and by
singing. Friday night concluded the
Naturalist Ralls Recognized for 25 Years of Service
THE WINNEBAGO COUNTY CONSERVATION BOARD ... recently
recognized County Naturalist Lisa Ralls for 25 years of employment
at its July 12 Board meeting held at Thorpe Park. Ralls was
presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Board Chairman,
John Carlson, and fellow Board members. Ralls began working for
the Conservation Board in July of 1985 and recently reached the 25
year milestone on July 1 of this year. For the first 8 years of her
career as Naturalist, Ralls worked for both Winnebago and Hancock
County Conservation Boards until going fulltime with Winnebago
County in 1993. From left are John Carlson, Mike Korth, Naturalist
week with a program and an ice
cream social for the kids and their
families.
Each evening during the week,
the children provided a mission
offering. Since children and animals
are usually a good pair, the
Community VBS has continued its
mission support of Heifer
International (“the Heifer Project”).
Heifer Project is an ecumenical and
international mission that is based
on the adage, “give a man a fish
and you feed him for a day, teach a
man to fish and you feed him for a
lifetime.” Needy families both in
the United States and worldwide
are provided farm animals to assist
them in establishing a better life.
The animals include a pregnant
female with the stipulation that
when the new animals are born,
they must be shared with other
families so that the giving can go
on indefinitely — providing ongoing
resources for others as well as a
sense of participation for the giving
family.
This summer, VBS has raised
well over $300 in order to provide
a flock of geese, a flock of ducks, a
flock of chicks, a trio of rabbits, a
gift of bees, a gift of a pig and a gift
of trees to help prevent soil erosion.
“One young girl seemed to break
into her piggy bank to make a difference,
bringing a sack full of
change in order to provide for people
whose lives will improve dramatically
thanks to the generosity
of all our children,” said Pastor
NASA & Muslims
Only two more space shuttle missions are planned. The next one to
the International Space Station is set for Nov. 1, when Discovery goes into
orbit around the earth. It will be the 133rd shuttle mission, and the 35th
delivery to the space station. The final mission launches Feb. 26 when
Endeavour heads to the ISS.
As we approach those dates, the rhetoric over the future of the space
program is sure to escalate. The discussions will be particularly interesting
given the cost of space exploration, the scientific benefits of space exploration,
our exploding national debt, the need for more exploration of deep
oceans in the wake of the BP oil rig disaster, and the definition of NASA's
role in government.
The latter came under scrutiny earlier this month when it was
revealed that third in the list of a priorities given the new NASA
Administrator Charles Bolden by President Barack Obama was "to find a
way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly
Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution
to science ... and math and engineering."
That NASA has made inroads with other nations with regard to scientific
discovery is an unchallenged fact. Though the Russians remain an
ally at odds with us on many fronts, our unified effort to build, maintain
and staff the space station is a successful joint endeavor. In fact, when the
shuttle fleet is mothballed next year, our astronauts will get to space and
back in Russian vehicles. Scientists from nations all over the globe have
been involved in the space station project, with the blessings of their
nations, while working in cooperation with the United States through
NASA. In turn, much of the scientific advancement made due to work in
space has been shared among all those nations.
NASA spokesman Nick Shapiro said in a written statement that
Obama "wants NASA to engage with the world's best scientists and engineers
as we work together to push the boundaries of exploration. Meeting
that mandate requires NASA to partner with countries around the world
like Russia and Japan, as well as collaboration with Israel and with many
Muslim-majority countries. The space race began as a global competition,
but, today, it is a global collaboration," he said.
In that vein, it makes sense that President Obama would want to
expand to the Muslim world the same offer. Why not get them involved on
a scientific level with the rest of the world's leading researchers? What can
it hurt? Does sharing space-generated scientific research with Muslims put
us at more danger than sharing it with Chinese, Russians or others?
The story was revealed by FOX News after it learned that statements
regarding the Obama policy with regard to NASA were made by Bolden to
the Muslim news agency Al Jazeera. That rankled a lot of people - that
Muslim nations were given such information prior to most Americans.
Bolden told Al Jazeera last month that President Obama told him before he
took the job that he wanted him to do three things: inspire children to learn
math and science, expand international relationships, and reach out to the
Muslim world.
Michael Griffin, who led NASA under President George W. Bush,
criticized the president's policy and said NASA shouldn't be used for such
political purposes.
"If by doing great things, people are inspired, well then that's wonderful,"
Griffin said. "If you get it in the wrong order ... it becomes an
empty shell. That is exactly what is in danger of happening."
Griffin added that while welcome, cooperation from Muslim nations
is not vital for U.S. advancements in space exploration. "There is no technology
they have that we need."
Bolden denied the suggestion that he was on a diplomatic mission.
"Not at all. It's not a diplomatic anything," he said. He also said the United
States is not going to travel beyond low-Earth orbit on its own and that no
country is going to make it to Mars without international help.
Griffin disputed this point. He said the U.S. can still make those
strides without international aid if it wishes, and that, "To the extent that
we wish to go to Mars, we can go to Mars." Griffin said the U.S. should in
fact seek international cooperation for those missions, but that it would be
"clearly false" to suggest the U.S. needs that cooperation.
Truth is, they're all kidding themselves. Here's why:
o 1) The space race launched by President Kennedy in the early
1960s was an effort to get the public excited about spending money that
was really designed to boost the American military complex and defense
spending. While NASA was fun for most of us, it was really a way to offset
concerns that if the Soviet Union (primarily controlled by Russians)
was to gain control of space, they gained control of the planet. The Cold
War balance of power had to be retained, and the U.S. had to spend money
in space to do it. In the end, we won the race to the moon, but we also headed
off Russian domination in orbit. NASA has always been about diplomacy
and superiority of the American scientific and military community.
Opponents of President Obama are disingenuous if they claim he is politicizing
NASA - that's been done since its inception.
o 2) President Obama believes that extending a scientific olive
branch to the Muslim world will help develop peaceful relations. But as in
the development of the American space program to head off the Soviets,
science is often co-opted by those in power to accomplish their goals. The
president ought to recognize that and understand that sharing scientific
information with the Muslim world only ensures that the Muslim world has
the scientific information we have. If he trusts that won't fall into the hands
of leaders who oppose the U.S., then I think he needs to study some history
- perhaps of World War II rocket and nuclear development in Germany
that leaked to the U.S., which immediately put it to work in its own scientific
community. He might also want to take a look at video from Sept. 11,
2001, if he wants an idea of what technology in angry hands can do.
What all of us, who pay the bills, must remember is that we can grow
world cooperation through science, but the cooperation is primarily among
the scientific world. The political world still sees science as a tool, is still
at odds, and is still about power. We have to be very careful about whom
we trust, and with what.
The sheepfold
By Sue Hicks
Three scripture passages to ponder:
Exekiel 34:11-16
For thus says the Lord God: "I
myself will search for my sheep,
and will seek them out. As shepherds
seek out their flocks when
they are among their scattered
sheep, so I will seek out my sheep.
I will rescue them from all the
places to which they have been
scattered on a day of clouds and
thick darkness.
I will bring them out from the
peoples and gather them from the
countries, and will bring them into
their own land; and I will feed them
on the mountains of Israel, by the
watercourses, and in all the inhabited
parts of the land. I will feed
them with good pasture. There,
they shall lie down in good grazing
land, and they shall feed on rich
pasture on the mountains of Israel.
I myself will be the shepherd of my
sheep, and I will make them lie
down," says the Lord God.
"I will seek the lost, and I will
bring back the strayed, and I will
bind up the injured, and I will
strengthen the weak, but the fat and
the strong I will destroy. I will feed
them with justice."
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall
not want. He makes me lie down in
green pastures; he leads me beside
still waters; he restores my soul. He
leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I fear
no evil; for you are with me; your
rod and your staff - they comfort
me.
You prepare a table before me in
the presence of my enemies; you
anoint my head with oil; my cup
overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my
life, and I shall dwell in the house
of the Lord forever.
John 10:1-16
"Very truly, I tell you, anyone
who does not enter the sheepfold
by the gate but climbs in by another
way is a thief and a bandit. The
one who enters by the gate is the
shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper
opens the gate for him, and
the sheep hear his voice. He calls
his own sheep by name and leads
them out. When he has brought out
all his own, he goes ahead of them,
and sheep follow him because they
know his voice.
"They will not follow a stranger,
but they will run from him because
they do not know the voice of
strangers." Jesus used this figure of
speech with them, but they did not
understand what he was saying to
them.
So, again, Jesus said to them,
"Very truly I tell you, I am the gate
for the sheep. All who came before
me are thieves and bandits; but the
sheep did not listen to them. I am
the gate. Whoever enters by me
will be saved, and will come in and
go out and find pasture. The thief
comes only to steal and kill and
destroy. I came that they might
have life, and have it abundantly.
I am the good shepherd. The
good shepherd lays down his life
for the sheep. The hired hand, who
is not the shepherd and does not
own the sheep, sees the wolf coming,
and leaves the sheep and runs
away - and the wolf snatches them
all and scatters them. The hired
hand runs away because a hired
hand does not care for the sheep.
I am the good shepherd. I know
my own, and my own know me,
just as the Father knows me and I
know the Father. And I lay down
my life for the sheep. I have other
sheep, that do not belong to this
fold. I must bring them also, and
they will listen to my voice. So,
there will be one flock, one shepherd.
Lord God, help us to remember
that you will not abandon us when
trouble comes. Help us to see your
desire to place us in good pasture,
to make us lie down, to bind up our
wounds, to give us abundant life.
Help us to remember your words:
"Never will I leave you. Never will
I forsake you.
Re: Relay for Life
Another Relay has come and
gone. To many this may have been
a non-event, however, to the many
Cancer Survivors in Winnebago
County, this was a major happening.
Relay for Life, an American
Cancer Society Event, takes place
each year and raises money for
Cancer research. This event is the
reason for a life changing experience
for many who have been diag-
nosed with Cancer. All the money
raised throughout the year goes
directly to the American Cancer
Society, and the bulk of it stays
right here in Iowa.
The 2010 Relay for Life of
Winnebago County raised over
$75,000. This is an amazing
amount of money and happens
because the entire community takes
part. This event had many people
that caused it to be able to raise this
amount of money. The steering
committee who works all year to
organize the event, the volunteers
who help the day of relay, the teams
who hold fundraisers all year long,
the community who goes to the
fundraisers, the merchants and
businesses who donate time,
money and products; this is what
makes it happen.
2010 Relay for Life was a wonderful
event; we had exciting entertainment;
a live remote by KIOW,
a volleyball tournament, many
musical groups, a young girls dance
troupe, and of course the Luminaria
Ceremony to pay tribute to
Survivors and to honor the memory
of those lost to the disease.
I would like to thank all those
who participated, donated time,
product and money to this event.
The list is in the hundreds and far
too long to list. You know who you
are; and we are counting on you to
be involved next year. If you were
not involved, please do yourself a
favor and become involved. You
will not regret it.
By Sandy Bashans, Activity Director
It was semi-vacation time for
the residents here at TMNH as
Sandy was on vacation, too. This
made for no exercise, so that was
their vacation. Many of the other
things went on as usual.
Tuesday, the Zion Lutheran
Church came and we played Bingo.
They had an assortment of food
items for prizes and cookies for
lunch.
Bucky Legried was our entertainment
on Saturday afternoon. It
was great having him here again.
We had a good time.
The new pastor from Zion
Sunday. It’s nice to welcome him to
the area. Welcome Pastor Mahnke,
it’s nice having you here.
PUBLIC NOTICE
NOTICE OF THE AVAILABILITY OF AN
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
The USDA Rural Utilities Service has
received an application for financial assistance
from the City of Lakota. As required by the
National Environmental Policy Act and agency
regulations, the Rural Utilities Service has prepared
an Environmental Assessment that
evaluated the potential environmental effects
and consequences of the proposal. This
notice announces the availability of the
Environmental Assessment for public view and
comment.
The proposal consists of a wastewater collection
and treatment facility to serve the residents
of Lakota, IA. The exact location of
treatment facility is yet to be determined, but
will be located within approximately 1 mile of
the city and utilize 5 acres of land.
The collection system alternatives considered
in this proposal for include: Gravity
Sewer to Proposed Central Wastewater
Treatment Facility (WWTF), Pressure Sewer
System to Proposed Central WWTF, and
Combination Gravity and Pressure Sewer
System to Proposed Central WWTF. The treatment
system alternatives investigated in this
proposal include: Controlled Discharge
Lagoon System, Aerated Lagoon System,
Cluster Wastewater Treatment Systems, and
On-Site Treatment Systems. The no-action
alternative was not a practical option for the
city since it has been cited by the IA DNR for
code violations.
A low-pressure collection system and controlled
discharge lagoon are planned for the
proposed project due to the initial cost of construction
and maintenance expense to the city.
The mitigation measures for the proposed
project include compliance with the conditions
set forth in the NPDES permit, wastewater
construction permit and discharge/operating
permit issued by the IA DNR. The City will also
adopt an ordinance prohibiting the connection
of any new construction within the identified
Crick Kittens
I know there is speculation as to
whether the word "crick" is grammatically
correct or not. And as far
as I know, it will not appear in any
dictionaries, making its use improper
especially regarding professionally
published literature. (Except
for the country song that I consider
one of my anthems, "Fishing in the
Dark"). To be perfectly honest, I
don't care! The rest of the world
who refers to small meandering
streams as creeks or brooks or
whatever is WRONG! To this back-
40 Iowa country boy, I'll go to my
grave referring to my earthly piece
of heaven as a crick. Don't even try
to change me, EVER. The End.
Now that I am finished with my
rant, we can get down to business. I
grew up just a five-minute bike ride
from a crick that quite possibly was
the best friend I had during my
formative years. I learned how to
read the water and began to understand
that its what's underneath that
is most important. Years later, I proposed
to my wife in the very water
that is responsible for the passion I
now have for angling.
I spent every single summer day
down at the crick fishing for carp,
suckers, gar, big channel cats, and
the occasional smallie or walleye.
What's better, cricks are Iowa's very
most overlooked fishing opportunities
and can provide hours of
angling fun for the novice or even
challenge the veteran.
Being mobile is key to success,
so wear old nasty shoes and shorts,
as navigating through the water is
the best way when traveling from
bend to bend. As I said last week,
don't wear this stuff back in the
house before you get hosed off, that
usually won't end well. Take one to
two rod and reel combos strung
with 10-12 lbs. line; both braids and
monofilaments work well in these
situations.
I know this is no longer acceptable
in the fashion world, but I like
to take a fanny-pack loaded with
extra hooks, weights, pliers, small
fillet knife, and enough bait to last
for several hours. (NOTE: I refused
to wear that fanny pack around my
waist!)
Channel cats are known for loving
an assortment of large, smelly
baits. The rig is quite simple. A single
4/0 to 5/0 hook will work great
matched with 1/2 to 1 full ounce of
weight, depending on the strength
of the current. I prefer fresh cut-bait
consisting of chunked bluegills,
shad, or chubs cut into two-inch
chunks. Run the hook through one
corner of the bait, leaving the point
and barb exposed. Take a few extra
hooks as this rig can occasionally
get hung up.
Cricks have very defined current
areas and knowing where the fish
prefer to stage when they are feeding
or are inactive will help you
eliminate unproductive water. It has
been said that in rivers and cricks
alike, 90% of the fish live in 10% of
the water.
Active fish will stage behind the
current break where "eddies" are
formed, as they await the current to
bring food by. They will also stage
above and below major snags, in
slack waters below quick moving
runs, and any current manipulating
structure. Spend no more than 10
minutes on a specific location; the
great thing about this fishery is
there are always more opportunities
at the next snag.
I challenge you to get back to
your roots during this final month
of Iowa's summer, wade the riffles
and runs of a local crick as a little
more heaven awaits you around the
next bend.
Good luck and tight lines.
Fire & Ambulance
Services Benefit at
Golf Tournament
The 22nd Annual Heartland
Mutual Insurance Golf Benefit
Tournament was held at different
sites on June 12 and 26. There were
a total of 70 teams, each consisting
of 4 individuals who represented 17
different fire departments and
ambulance services. Tournaments
were held at the River Road Golf
Course in Algona, the North
Kossuth Golf Course in Bancroft,
and the Whittemore Golf Course.
Teams played an 18 hole "Best
Shot" tournament format.
This tournament is unique in
that all entry fees paid are considered
donations and go directly to
the fire departments or ambulance
services designated by the participating
teams. Heartland Mutual
Insurance Association pays all
expenses for green fees, prizes, and
meals. This annual tournament has
been a tremendous success in generating
needed funds for the communities
that have assisted in making
the company a success over the
last 123 years. After applications
are sent to the local departments, all
available spots are filled in a very
short time, which shows the popularity
of this tournament.
This year, the 17 different
organizations received a total of
$9,910, which was donated by individual
and business sponsors.
During the 22 year history of this
tournament, Heartland Mutual has
helped to raise $284,745 for 56 different
services in and around North
Central Iowa.
Many thanks are extended to all
that have participated in this benefit
for local departments. With your
help, our communities are better
places to live and work in, which
explains why Heartland Mutual has
been built on the reputation of
neighbor helping neighbor.
Clean Hands
Save Lives
Washing hands correctly can remove
99 percent of germs that contribute
to common illnesses.
Washing hands isn’t simply a
method of cleaning up before sitting
down to dinner. Frequent handwashing
is the single most effective
way to prevent illness.
Proper hand-washing has proven
effective against the spread of
99 percent of germs that travel via
droplets -- and that includes the flu
virus. The fact of the matter is that
dirty hands have the potential to be
deadly, especially if they are the carriers
of hazardous germs.
It’s impossible to avoid germs.
Simply going about daily activities
exposes a person to thousands
of germs. Shopping in a store, going
to school or even spending time
around the house can spread germs.
When a person touches his or her
eyes, mouth or nose with hands that
are harboring viruses or bacteria, illnesses
can easily take root. Germs
can also be spread via touch.
There are many times when
hands should be washed.
Before ...
* preparing food
* eating food
* inserting or removing
contact lenses
* treating someone who is sick
or injured
* giving or taking medicine
After ...
* changing a diaper
* touching an animal,
pet toys, etc.
* using the bathroom
* using public transportation
* preparing food, especially
raw meats and poultry
* handling garbage or
soiled items
* touching a sick or injured
person
* blowing your nose or sneezing
Proper Hand-Washing Techniques
There is a right way to wash
hands. Follow this procedure, courtesy
of The Mayo Clinic.
1. Turn on the water to desired
temperature (cold or hot water is
equally effective).
2. Wet hands under running water.
3. Apply soap and lather for 20
seconds or more, paying careful attention
to all areas of the hands, including
the backs of the hands.
4. Rinse well.
5. Dry hands on a towel or with
an air dryer. Use a towel to close the
faucet. Many germs live on wet faucet
handles, and a person can contaminate
him or herself again.
Keep in mind that antibacterial
soap is no more effective at killing
germs than regular soap. In fact, antibacterial
products -- when overused
-- actually may kill off good bacteria
or cause certain bacteria to become
resistant. This will make it harder to
kill these germs in the future.
When soap and water are not
available, alcohol-based sanitizers
are effective at keeping hands
clean. Look for commercially produced
products that contain at least
60 percent alcohol. Enough of the
product should be used to wet hands
completely. Rub hands and wait for
the product to be completely dry for
maximum effectiveness.
How to Choose
a Sweet Spot
for Studying
Finding a consistent study spot at
home that allows kids to concentrate
while working on schoolwork can
help them excel in the classroom.
As school gets back into full
swing, school-aged kids across the
country are once again spending
their afternoons doing homework instead
of lounging around the house
as if it were still summer vacation.
While home might be the ideal spot
to spend lazy summer afternoons,
it’s often not ideal for doing homework
or working on other school
projects.
However, finding a study spot
does not have to involve packing the
kids into the car and heading to the
nearby public library. In fact, parents
can create the ideal study spot right
at home.
* Make the room available at all
times. First and foremost, a study
spot needs to be available to kids
every day. If Mom or Dad has a
home office and travel two or three
days a week, that’s still not an ideal
spot for studying, as Mom and Dad
will be working in the home office
themselves whenever they’re not out
on the road. When choosing a study
spot, be sure to look for a place in
the home that’s available to kids at
all times, not just certain days of the
week.
* Look for a distraction-free
zone. Today’s kids have more to
distract them than ever before. Computers,
video games, television, and
even cellular phones can all keep
kids from making the most of their
study time. Look for a spot in the
home that’s devoid of distraction. It
should be a place where the television
cannot be heard and kids won’t
have access to phones, video games
or other items that might make it
hard to concentrate on schoolwork.
* Don’t make things too comfortable.
While an uncomfortable chair
can make it difficult to concentrate
on studies, it can also be hard to focus
when the environment is overly
comfortable and accommodating. If
kids like to study in their bedrooms,
be sure to have desks in there. If
there’s nothing but a bed and a beanbag
chair, kids are almost certain to
spend more time napping than they
are studying.
* Keep things on the bright side.
Poorly lit rooms tend to make kids
drowsy, which can make it more dif
ficult to study and absorb information.
When finding a study spot, if
it’s not possible to find a room that’s
naturally bright with sunlight, make
sure the room is well lit with lamps
or an overhead light fixture.
* Check the room’s temperature.
A study spot in the home should not
be too cold or too hot. As any homeowner
knows, some rooms in the
home are colder than others, while
some rooms feel like a sauna. When
looking for a study spot, look for a
room that is not extreme in either direction.
One that provides a steady,
comfortable temperature (room temperature,
for instance) is better than a
room that might get too cold in winter
or prove too hot in early autumn.
Either of these scenarios would force
kids to switch study spots during the
school year, which could prove detrimental
to study habits. TF109873
