TORNADO SIRENS
TO BE TESTED!
Review Committee. The committee
raised the standard for all authorized
graduate programs in Iowa
which desired to award administrator
licensure programs.
“It is a great honor to be asked
by Governor Branstad to serve
Iowans on a board which directly
impacts the quality and ethical decisions
made by Iowa educators,”
said Hill. “I have offered well over
three decades of service as an Iowa
educator. I have had the honor of
teaching students from
Kindergarten through grade 16. It
has been a wonderful career. Now I
have been asked to help restore to
the classroom and administrative
offices the quality Iowa has been
noted for and to continue a high
ethical standard.”
Besides serving as a teacher,
coach, principal, and superintendent,
Hill has also taught post-graduate
courses for William Penn
Iowa, Iowa Association of School
Boards, and several upper Midwest
school districts. Hill was named
Iowa’s Superintendent of the Year
in 2005. He recently completed his
doctoral work at Drake University
The Tornado and All-Clear
warning sirens in Buffalo Center are
scheduled to be activated in a series of
three test soundings during the month
of April 2011. The sirens will be triggered
at 10:15 o'clock on the mornings of April 15, 22 and 29 in an
effort to permit our residents to become familiar with the two distinctly
different sirens.
The first siren to be activated each Friday will be the Tornado
Siren — at 10:15 a.m. — and after a fifteen minute interval, the All-
Clear Siren will be sounded — at 10:30 a.m.
Residents are reminded to familiarize themselves with this test
series and to learn the difference in sounds between the two sirens.
Should severe weather develop here, the knowledge of which siren is
being sounded could well be vitally important to everyone!
The sirens will be sounded on these dates and in the
Tornado/All-Clear sequence:
BRUCE MEINDERS OF STACIE’S DAIRY ... located southwest of Buffalo Center, conducted a trial run of his new milk processing facility
at his farm this past weekend. He hopes to have his new “Meinders Farm Fresh Dairy” products in local stores within the next 10 days.
Local Dairy Gives Shoppers a Fresh Alternative
The freshest dairy products possible
will soon be hitting the shelves
at area stores, thanks to a new
undertaking by Stacie’s Dairy of
Buffalo Center. The dairy kicked
off operations last weekend of its
new federally inspected on-site processing
facility, and it expects to
begin selling “Meinders Farm Fresh
Dairy” products, including milk,
butter and ice cream at local grocery
and convenience stores in the
next week or so.
“You just can’t get fresh milk
around here like we will be able to
provide,” said Bruce Meinders, who
owns Stacie’s Dairy. He set out last
year to process and bottle milk right
on his farm. His goal — to provide
the freshest, highest quality product
that can be found in the area.
He added an entirely new facility
on the dairy to handle processing,
and he searched all over the country
to find the necessary equipment.
Bruce points out that most dairy
processing facilities are very large,
so it was hard to find smaller equip-
ment to fit his needs on a dairy with
60 cows. Some pieces of equipment
came from as far away as Ohio,
Idaho, and even Florida. “It was a
trick to find all the equipment you
need and put it all together,” said
Bruce.
Bruce notes that his dairy is now
just the tenth one in Iowa with onfarm
milk processing. The dairy
also utilizes a robotic milking
machine, making it the only robotic
dairy in the United States to bottle
its own milk. The dairy is federally
inspected to process Grade A milk.
Milk will be sold in gallons, half
gallons and 16-ounce sizes, and
varieties will include skim, 1%, 2%,
whole, and 2% chocolate. Ice cream
will come in a variety of flavors,
and that along with unsalted butter
should show up in stores in a couple
of weeks.
Bruce says “Meinders Farm
Fresh Dairy” products will be available
at area grocery stores including
Johnson’s Food Center in Buffalo
Center and Bancroft, Titonka Food
Center in Titonka and Hy-Vee in
Algona to begin with. Milk will
also be supplied to area convenience
stores.
Fresh Milk in Rake and Lakota
Bruce also wants to make his
products available in area towns
which don’t have stores. That’s why
he came up with the idea to have
vending machines which can dispense
half gallon jugs of milk. In
fact, Bruce says his dairy will be the
only one in the entire country selling
milk this way. Bruce plans to
have vending machines in Rake,
Lakota, Woden, Leland, Fenton,
Lone Rock and Ringsted. These
machines should be installed within
two weeks, according to Bruce.
The new processing operation is
a big change for Stacie’s Dairy. The
farm has been in the Meinders family
since 1902. It was in that year
that Dirk and Wupka Meinders purchased
the farm. They passed it to
Henry and Nellie Meinders, who
moved to the farm in 1915, followed
by Wilbert and Gertrude
Meinders in 1957, and Bruce, who
has lived there since 1998.
To help him run the new operation,
Bruce has hired Mike Dunn of
Sturgis, SD, who will graduate this
spring from South Dakota State
University with a degree in Dairy
Processing. Bruce anticipates that
he will need to add at least one driver
in order to make deliveries.
Milk from the dairy should reach
stores just 1-3 days after being
milked from the cows, and Bruce
says his products will be priced
very competitively with other
brands. “I hope people are willing
to try my product, and I hope they
like it,” said Bruce.
Bruce and his wife, Stacie, live
on the farm located seven miles
southwest of Buffalo Center. They
have a daughter, Ava, and another
son or daughter on the way, who is
expected to arrive in just four
weeks.
A BRAND NEW FACILITY HOUSES ... the milk processing operations for “Meinders Farm Fresh Dairy” products. Construction on the new
building, located at Stacie’s Dairy seven miles southwest of Buffalo Center, took place over the winter, and dairy owner Bruce Meinders
searched all over the country to find the equipment needed to fill it.
NORTH IOWA’S 8TH GRADERS ... logged a lot of miles between March 27 and April 2, as they embarked on their Destination D.C. trip
to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. They made stops at Chicago, the University of Notre Dame, Gettysburg Battlefield and Harpers
Ferry before reaching their destination. The students and chaperones were in a patriotic mood as they waved flags on the bus during one
leg of their trip.
On the Side by Brad Hicks
Ka-daffy?
As we shuttled through the city, the lack of protest and gunplay was
surprising. We had expected more violence, but in real terms, it was quiet.
The only nerve-racking moments were at the palace gate - not so much for
the armed guards behind dark glasses, but for the feeling that at just about
any time, a Tomahawk cruise missile might drill its way into the side of the
building, sending lethal hailstones made of concrete flying in every direction.
We noted the lack of security upon our arrival. We chalked it up to
being pre-cleared, pre-checked, and closely guarded for several hours prior
to the meeting. Once we were inside the palace, we walked just a few
dozen steps to a room where we sat down. Within seconds, he entered the
room.
"Welcome to my home," he said.
"Thank you, Mr. Gadhafi," I replied.
To have landed this interview was quite a coup. Lots of journalists
would have pulled every shenanigan in the book to beat us out for this
opportunity. We ran that gauntlet, which was more littered with problems
than the actual trip to Tripoli.
"I am going to move about, taking photos," my partner said. "Is that
OK with you?"
"Yes. But take more from this side, my good side," the Libyan leader
said with a laugh, pointing to both cheeks.
We laughed, too.
"What do you want to know, my friend?" asked the colonel, with a wry
smile. "I am an open book."
"Well, to tell you the truth, the first thing most journalists want to do
is spell someone's name correctly. Frankly, your name has been spelled so
many different ways in the world press that none of us even knows what's
correct. So, if you could, can you give me the way you want it spelled?"
He laughed.
"Spell it M-o-a-m-m-a-r."
There was a silence.
"Ah, yes. I understand. Um, it's your last name that no one understands.
I think we know Moammar."
The wrinkles on the leader's face folded into one another, creating a
weird type of doubting smirk.
"Any way is fine."
"Well, not for us journalists. We need to know."
"I do not think you understand. Any way is fine. I care not."
"But we journalists do."
"Spell it any way you want."
"Well, I mean, how is it on, say, your driver's license?"
"I do not drive. People drive me."
"But, if you drove, how would it be spelled on there?"
"I have never given it much thought."
By now, I could see he was losing some patience.
"Well, I'm sure, sir, that as you don't need a driver's license, or probably
have to sign a tax return, or write checks, you probably don't have to
sign your name much."
He leaned back in his chair.
"Yes. You are right," he said smiling. "It's good to be me, no matter
how I spell my name." He leaned forward in his chair, smiled, then sat back
and folded his arms. "Maybe I should spell my name different ways on purpose."
"Uh, sir?"
"Yes, I think different spellings would be fun. And I could base it on
how I feel. Here's one. When I am feeling invincible, I will call myself
God-hafi."
"Sir, I just wanted..."
"And when I do my original rap lyrics, I will be Kaff-daddy,"
"Uh, how would you..."
"And when I am in one of my great humor moods, I will be Ka-daffy.
Or Kad-laughy."
"About your sense of hum..."
"And when I am having one of those days when I am confused about
who I am - do you ever have any of those days?"
"Sir?"
"You know, when you think you should have been a shepherd, or a
camel feeder, or yes, even a journalist - maybe all at once? Like four personalities
in one? Well, I could be a Quad-daffi."
"Do you have many of those multiple personality days, sir?"
"Doesn't everyone? Don't you?"
"Uh, sure," I said, sensing that was the right answer.
"And when I want to go to the circus, I could be Kad-taffy. By the
looks of my waistline, perhaps I should be Kad-tabby! Oh-oh, here's a
good one - when I am sick, I can be Coughdaddy. Write that down."
"Yes, I think I have the answer to that question. Now, if we could
move on to the next topic."
"I like you. This has been fun, but our time is over, regretfully. I need
to mapquest a few routes into Uganda and Niger."
"Are you making escape plans?"
"Mr. word man, you don't stay in power for four decades by being a
Mad-daffy. Ha! Another one! I can't wait to see my names on the internet!"
In the end,
it must bring
him glory
By Sue Hicks
It is hard to bring glory and
praise to God. Think of Joseph who
was sent to Egypt to save his people
"by a great deliverance," after all
those years of unjust imprisonment.
Think of Moses, 400 years later,
who led them out after hiding in the
desert 40 years, only for another 40
years of wandering to follow.
Bringing glory and praise to God
involves being stretched to the
uttermost. It is because God wants
all the glory. He will not share it.
Moses was sent to Pharaoh 10
times, and each time, God hardened
Pharaoh's heart toward Moses and
the Hebrews. Even when he did let
them go, Pharaoh's hardness reared
up. He chased after the Israelites
with his armies.
Today we think of praise being
about worship songs and glory
being some sort of holy miasma
which will descend upon us if we
sing long and true enough. But it
costs much more than that.
"For which of you, intending to
build a tower, does not first sit
down and estimate the cost, to see
whether he has enough to complete
it? Otherwise, when he has laid a
foundation and is not able to finish,
all who see it will begin to ridicule
him, saying, 'this fellow began to
build and was not able to finish.' Or,
what king, going out to wage war
against another king, will not sit
down first and consider whether he
is able with 10,000 to oppose the
one who comes against him with
20,000? If he cannot, then, while
the other is still far away, he sends a
delegation and asks for the terms of
peace. So therefore, none of you
can become my disciple if you do
not give up all you have." Luke
14:28-33.
Jesus asks us to give up our ownership,
our rights. It may be the
right to health and well-being; it
may be possessions; it may be family;
it may be the right to a life-partner,
it may be a dream job. But
sooner or later, no matter what it is,
he will ask it of you, just as he has
of me. He asks us to go through
these things - and they are always
hard things - because that is what
will bring the Father glory. As
David said in Psalm 42 as he was
longing for God and his help in distress:
"I will yet praise him, my savior
and my God."
David wasn't afraid to tell God
how bad he felt in the deep that
called to deep. We don't get out of
the pain either. But we can get
through. Recently, I was crying to
God out of my own depths, and it
seemed to me that Jesus was asking
something of me. He asked me if I
couldn't go through it for myself,
could I go through it for him?
As long as you are with me, was
all I could sniffle. It has changed a
lot for me. I still feel bad, but now
this time, is not meaningless. In
whatever way he can work it out
(that I don't know) it will surely end
by bringing God glory.
Still not convinced? God doesn't
do that, you say? He looks after and
blesses those he loves and gives
them everything? What matters to
you matters to God?
Consider this, Jesus prayed on
the night of his betrayal: "Father, I
desire that those whom you have
given me, may be with me where I
am to see my glory, which you have
given me because you loved me
before the foundation of the world."
John 17:24.
Where was Jesus? He was on the
precipice of betrayal, arrest, scourging
and crucifixion.
And yes, his disciples did join
and Mrs. Mel Leibrand purchased
the property last year with an eye to
eventually expanding their business
location on North Main Street.
TRIBUNE FILES OF
THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 1961
Over one-hundred and fifty
Lions and their wives attended the
annual zone rally which was held at
Burt, Monday night. A delicious
meal sprinkled with the hilarious
antics of four lively, devilish
tailtwisters was followed by several
musical entertainers.
Monday, Allan Edwards purchased
the Bowers estate house,
west of the Congregational Church.
The purchase price was $200. Mr.
Edwards will move the structure to
lots he owns near the Clarence
Bond home.
Floyd Larson, who has been
employed with Hogard & Son
Blacksmithing shop for the past
several years, has purchased the
building previously occupied by
Cayler’s Tavern on Main Street. He
will make some improvements and
will open a lawn mower repair shop
there.
News from
TMNH
By Sandy Bashans, Activity Director
Our Residents Council met on
Monday morning to make plans for
the month of April. There were
quite a few decisions to make, but
we got it all done.
Tuesday, a group of ladies were
here from St. Paul’s Church to play
bingo. We had a good time and won
various kinds of packaged cookies
and chips for lunch, and had good
conversation.
Marlin Molskness was our
entertainment on Saturday. We’re
sure glad that he is up and around
again and ready to come back and
play for us.
We had our regular activities
this week of reading, exercise, current
events, and let’s talk. Also,
games of circle bean bag toss,
bowling, kilroy and target ball.
It’s starting to warm up a bit, so
we’re hoping for it to get nice
enough to go outside and enjoy the
fresh air soon. That, we’re looking
forward to.
The Baptist Church was in
charge of the services on Sunday.
We always appreciate them coming.
It is very important to us to
have our services each Sunday, and
we look forward to them.
Hey, guess what? The snow is
gone around TMNH, so we’re
going to start making plans for our
annual Easter Egg Hunt. Due to a
huge amount of snow still around
last year, we couldn’t have it, so
this year, we hope it’s a “go”.
So mark your calendars for
Saturday, April 23 for our Easter
Egg Hunt! See you then.
Think warm weather.
moved to pay this bill.
The spring district meeting is
May 1 at Eagle Grove. A letter from
President Phyllis Bierle was read.
The present officers decided to
keep their office for another year.
The Charter was draped in
honor of Frances Kelso. Eleanor M.
and Chaplain Deloris S. read the
ceremony. The closing prayer was
read by Chaplain Deloris S.
The meeting was adjourned to
be opened May 2. Eleanor M. is the
hostess.
Thank You Very Much!
The North Iowa Middle School 8th grade class
would like to extend a warm thank you to the North
Iowa School Community for the outstanding support
shown to us in our efforts to fund the annual
Destination DC trip. The support shown for the students
by local businesses and individuals was wonderful.
We hope it is gratifying to know that you each
played a part in providing these students with a once
in a lifetime experience.
A special thank you is also extended to Mike
Holstad, Susan Embrock, Lisa Mathahs, Mike
Embrock and Amanda Smith for their guidance and
assistance to the Destination DC trip. We appreciate
their time and efforts.
Again, we thank all of you.
Golfers Win
First Outing
The North Iowa boys and girls
golf teams both won in their opening
meet at Gruis on Tuesday, April
5. The boys were led by medalist
Eric Krull’s score of 36 for a team
total of 193 to edge out WCLT by
one point. Haley Engelbarts
medaled in the girls’ meet to lead
North Iowa to a 256 total.
Head coach Vic Garza says the
teams have had a short practice season
so far due to the weather, but he
has seen improvement in the
golfers’ shooting. He says the key
to their continued success will be
working more on their short game
and putting.
Obituaries
Joslyn D. Miller, 53
Joslyn Diane Miller, 53, of Twin
Falls, ID, returned home to her heavenly
Father, peacefully surrounded
by family and friends on April 4,
2011 after a courageous battle with
cancer.
A memorial service was held at
Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home
in Twin Falls on Saturday, April 9,
2011.
Joslyn was born on September 10,
1957 in Minneapolis, MN to proud
parents, Don and Lilah Gill. A few
years later they moved to Iowa.
Joslyn and her family lived in numerous
towns across Iowa, however
Rake was always known as home.
After graduating from high school
in Spencer, IA, Joslyn moved to
Idaho to be with her sister, Julie and
her family. Shortly after her move,
she met the love of her life, Shawn.
Together they had one daughter, Kari Lynn. Kari, was the light of her life
and she was never too proud to share stories or accomplishments with her
friends and coworkers about her daughter. Joslyn was the mom everyone
loved and adopted as their own. She had a way about her that always left
you with a smile. Always there to offer advice, or a shoulder of support,
Joslyn was the go-to friend for countless people.
Joslyn could easily be known as the face of the Twin Falls Target. For
the past 18 years, she was recognized in a myriad of places. From the aisles
of grocery stores to the library, "Don't I know you from somewhere?" was
an all too typical question of hers. Gracefully, she would smile and let them
know about her red and khaki connection. Her coworkers were more than
just people she worked with, they became her second family. Her smiling
face will truly be missed from the service desk and her voice from the team
member "walkies".
Joslyn enjoyed the outdoors and reading a good book while soaking in
the sun. She could often be found relaxed on the shore, while Shawn and
Kari fished the waters below. She had a profound love of ducks and their
symbol of strength. For those who knew Joslyn, she was the epitome of
courage and a pillar of strength, not only for herself but for all around her,
particularly for Kari.
In recent years, Joslyn lived life to the fullest including trips of whitewater
rafting in Stanley, playing blackjack in Jackpot, and especially welcoming
a grandson, Carson, whom she loved to hear laugh, and cuddle
with while reading bedtime stories.
Joslyn is survived by her daughter, Kari (Charles) Lindemood and their
son, Carson; her sisters-in-law Macie and MaiLin Miller; brothers-in-laws
Rod, Phillip and Vince Miller; her nieces Jennifer Peterson, Krystyl Miller
and Lauren Miller; her nephews, Scott Peterson, Andrew Peacock, Nick
Miller, and Mason Miller; her aunt and uncle, Kathleen and Daniel
Bowman; and her loving golden retriever, Abbey Mae.
Joslyn was a rare treasure in life and will be dearly missed by all whose
paths she crossed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the funeral
home for a memorial plaque to be placed at the Mountain States Tumor
Institute at St. Luke's Magic Valley.
Those wishing to share condolences may do so at www.magicvalleyfuneralhome.com.
Fish & Wildlife
Service Plans
Prescribed Burns
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service (USFWS), in cooperation
with the Iowa Department of
Natural Resources (IDNR), plans
to conduct a number of prescribed
burns this spring season. The burns
will occur on the Union Slough
National Wildlife Refuge (NWR)
near Titonka, a unit of the Northern
Tallgrass Prairie NWR near St.
Benedict, and on various federal
Waterfowl Productions Areas in the
area which are managed by IDNR
and USFWS.
Before a prescribed burn is performed,
a plan must be approved
which details the resource management
objectives of the burn, the
weather conditions required for a
successful burn, and an operational
TOP NORTH IOWA READER KRISTA SCHUTTER ... shows that
reading can be done anywhere and at any time, as she multitasks
by reading while dribbling a basketball. Krista read more than
26,000 pages during a reading incentive program at the school this
year.
plan which outlines the number of
personnel and equipment needed to
implement the burn as well as a
“contingency plan”, or steps to be
taken if the burn was to go out of
control. All members of the burn
crew, whether federal or state
employees, will have completed at
least 32 hours of training.
The burns are conducted to
achieve a number of habitat related
objectives such as reducing vegetative
cover, exotic and woody
species control, nutrient cycling,
weed control, and native prairie
restoration. Additionally, prescribed
burns help to protect our
neighbors in the event of a wildfire.
Periodic controlled burns reduce
hazardous fuel loads and ultimately
reduce the threat of wildfire to adjacent
private lands.
If you have specific questions
regarding any aspect of the prescribed
burning program administered
by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, contact: Fire Management
Specialist, Dan Paulson at 515-928-
2523 or Union Slough NWR, 1710
