1.4.4 Surgical AttireThe human body is a major source of micro-organisms that can cause infections to theclients. Shedding of bacteria from hair, skin, as well as organisms expelled from nose andmouth during talking, sneezing breathing etc. can lead to severe post procedureinfections.Surgical attire includes caps, mask, goggles, water proof apron, gown, gloves,footwear/shoe covers etc. Just wearing the attire is not enough to completely protect theprovider as well as client from infections; the technique of wearing surgical attire shouldbe absolutely aseptic to maintain its effectiveness. Only clean, dry and intact attire will be an effective barrier againstmicroorganisms. It is not necessary to sterilize the caps and masks, as they do not come in directcontact with the client. All the precautions should be taken not to touch the outside of any sterile clothing whilewearing it.Fig 6: Complete Surgical Attire22
