Using this information— Rebecca, sister to Esther, was a Cole, not a Jenson.Given the oddities in relationships—older cousins called Aunt, Uncle, Grandfather—Aunt’s raising motherlesschildren called Mother, sons-in-laws who were cousins referred to as “much loved sons”—sorting out is definitelya challenge.The records also state, in Dr. Ballards own hand, plus passed down orally—Angeline Jenson was “half DelawareIndian”. As both men and women married Indians, the Jenson name could come from either parent. Native mengenerally took the wife’s name—much like royalty/ nobles of old—when they did not have a last name of theirown in the European tradition.
