The motorcycle isan 865cc parallel-twin engined TriumphBonneville Thruxton café racer. With theconcerted efforts of PolyUstudents and staff membersof both Man Wai and IC,the motorcycle has beenupgraded and customizedwith a great new look forthe charity sale.“The whole idea is abouteducation. ic & industryThe first ADMN designed and manufactured byIC was officially launched in September 2011 inEPD’s Central West Air Quality Monitoring Station(AQMN/CW). 工 業 中 心 為 環 保 署 設 計 及 製 造 的 首台 酸 沈 降 監 測 網 絡 系 統 去 年 9 月 在 環 保 署 的 中 西區 空 氣 質 素 監 測 站 (AQMN/CW) 正 式 使 用 。Acid Deposition Monitoring Network for EPD為 環 保 署 設 計 及 製 造 酸 沈 降 監 測 網 絡 系 統Surrounded by highly industrialisedcities and regions, Hong Kong isextremely vulnerable to the effect of ‘acidrain’. Acid rain is a popular term referringto the deposition of both wet and dryacidic components from the atmosphere.Apart from its harmful effects on plantsand aquatic animals, acid depositionalso accelerates the decay of buildingmaterials and affects the human healthindirectly through the intake of toxicmetals via the food chain due to soilacidification. The damage and economiclosses caused by acid deposition areserious.It is therefore the responsibility of theEnvironmental Protection Department(EPD) of the Hong Kong SAR Governmentto monitor and tackle pollution caused byacid deposition. In fact, EPD started a acidrain monitoring program in the middleof the 1980s to collect, systematicallyreview and statistically analyse thecollected acid rain data (for both wetand dry deposition) in order to assess thecurrent situation in respect of acid rainand its potential future trend. The datacollection system had been in use forover ten years and recently the IndustrialCentre designed and manufactured anupgraded Acid Deposition MonitoringNetwork (ADMN) system for EPD. TheADMN is now a key component of EPD’sAcid Rain Monitoring Program.The first ADMN designed andmanufactured by IC was delivered to EPDin March 2011 and officially launched inSeptember 2011 in EPD’s Central WestAir Quality Monitoring Station (AQMN/CW). The system provides automatic wetand dry deposition sampling accordingto the rain sensor status. The system alsoprovides a logging system to monitorand log the weather condition, theoperational status of the system and theatmospheric deposition. The operatorwill periodically collect the samples andrecover the accumulated precipitationfor offsite laboratory chemical analysis.The logged data will be uploaded tothe server automatically through theInternet. A remote control unit and dataserver is installed in the EPD office atWan Chai to provide on-line monitoringand control of the system.Two more sets of ADMN system will bemanufactured and installed at EPD’s AirQuality Monitoring Station at Yuen Longand Kwun Tong (AQMN/YL and AQMN/KT) in March 2012.20

Their mentorsand technical supervisors at IC were veryimpressed not only by their knowledge,skills and capability but also their goodlearning attitude.Training for BIT students北 京 理 工 大 學 學 生 來 港 培 訓 計 劃Subsequent to the fruitful outcomeof last year’s training, the BeijingInstitute of Technology (BIT) again sentsix of its students to undertake a twoweekintegrative learning programmein the Centre during July 2011. Afterundertaking almost two weeks of trainingat different technical workshops, learningand practising different technologies,they were requested to demonstrate theoutcome of their group work effort, aPersonal Transportation Device, to theirmentors on their last day of training atthe PolyU campus on 29 July 2011.The trip to Hong Kong means a lot tothem. Academically, they were giventhe opportunity to go through differenttechnical workshops at IC and work asa team. Socially, they met many localstudents during the training and sharedwith each other the university study life京 理 工 大 學 今 年 再 接 再 厲 , 派 出 六北 名 學 生 到 工 業 中 心 進 行 兩 個 星 期 的綜 合 學 習 計 劃 。 六 名 學 生 在 兩 星 期 內 到 工業 中 心 不 同 車 間 學 習 各 種 工 程 技 術 , 並 把學 習 的 工 程 技 術 和 知 識 綜 合 , 集 體 製 造 了一 台 滑 板 車 , 在 培 訓 最 後 一 天 展 示 給 工 業中 心 的 導 師 。香 港 此 行 對 學 生 來 說 可 謂 收 獲 甚 豐 。 他 們以 小 組 形 式 獲 安 排 到 不 同 車 間 學 習 和 體 驗不 同 工 程 技 術 和 知 識 , 把 技 術 和 知 識 融 會貫 通 , 透 過 團 隊 項 目 展 示 所 學 。 在 香 港 逗留 期 間 , 他 們 入 住 了 理 大 學 生 宿 舍 , 並 有機 會 接 觸 其 他 本 地 學 生 , 了 解 不 同 地 方 的文 化 和 學 習 差 異 。 當 然 , 在 課 餘 時 他 們 更有 機 會 遊 覽 香 港 名 勝 和 地 標 , 盡 情 購 物 。六 名 學 生 在 培 訓 期 間 的 表 現 獲 工 業 中 心 導師 大 為 讚 賞 , 他 們 認 為 學 生 們 不 僅 有 良好 的 知 識 、 技 術 和 能 力 , 學 習 態 度 更 是 一流 。A technical drawing of their group work was givento them on their first day of training. ic teamChallenging race for engineers挑 戰 工 程 師 的 競 賽For the second time the IndustrialCentre participated in the Hong Kong24-hour Charity Pedal Kart Grand Prixorganized by the Hong Kong Round Table,a really challenging and demanding race.The race was held on 11 and 12 February2012 in Victoria Park, Hong Kong. A totalof 32 teams including two teams from ICtook part in the race.The Pedal Grand Prix is a 24-hour racewith a number of different classes ofpedal-cart. Each participating teampedals in relays for 24 hours and isresponsible for raising funds for charities.Teams from Hong Kong’s biggestcompanies, schools, associations andinstitutions compete with each other fora range of prizes including most moneyraised, best turned-out kart, engineeringexcellence, best all-around kart, mostnumber of laps and so on. The race isnot just a big challenge to the pedallingparticipants, as each participating teamhas to bring their own pedal kart whichmust comply fully with the requirementsset by the organiser. As a backupmeasure, each participating team alsohas its own support team to provide allnecessary technical support for the pedalkart in case of a breakdown or otheraccidents.This year, around 30 IC staff members,PolyU students and representativesfrom our sponsor Velocity Racers formedtwo teams and participated in the race.One racing pedal kart and one fun pedalkart were built. With an improved pedalkart and experience gained from lastcompetition, the racing team remarkablyfinished 10th out of 32 in the race withoutbreaking down the kart (last time wefinished 26th out of 33). ic team小 時 慈 善 腳 踏 車 格 蘭 披 治 大 賽 。 今 年 合 共 有 32 支 隊 伍 參 加 。香 港 24 小 時 慈 善 腳 踏 車 格 蘭 披 治 大 賽 是 一 項 集 不 同 種 類 車 組 的 24小 時 接 力 賽 。 每 支 參 賽 隊 伍 的 隊 員 需 要 輪 流 接 力 以 腳 踏 車 比 賽 ,而 籌 得 的 款 項 將 會 交 予 圓 桌 會 作 慈 善 用 途 。 參 賽 隊 伍 包 括 來 自 本地 大 型 企 業 、 學 校 、 團 體 機 構 等 , 爭 奪 各 個 獎 項 例 如 最 高 籌 款額 、 最 佳 外 型 設 計 、 最 佳 機 械 設 計 、 全 能 賽 車 、 最 長 行 駛 距 離 等等 。 這 個 比 賽 固 然 是 對 腳 踏 車 手 的 一 個 極 大 的 考 驗 , 不 過 真 正 考驗 的 還 包 括 參 賽 隊 伍 的 後 勤 和 支 援 。 每 隊 隊 伍 需 要 自 備 腳 踏 車 參賽 , 而 由 於 比 賽 過 程 中 隨 時 會 發 生 機 械 故 障 , 甚 至 意 外 , 因 此 具備 有 充 足 、 全 面 及 快 速 的 後 勤 機 械 支 援 及 維 修 隊 伍 亦 是 勝 負 關 鍵的 分 野 。約 30 名 來 自 工 業 中 心 教 職 員 、 理 大 學 生 及 贊 助 機 構 VelocityRacers 代 表 組 成 兩 支 隊 伍 參 加 了 今 屆 的 香 港 24 小 時 慈 善 腳 踏 車 格蘭 披 治 大 賽 。 工 業 中 心 特 別 製 造 了 兩 架 全 新 的 腳 踏 車 , 一 架 以 競賽 參 與 性 質 為 主 , 另 一 架 則 以 趣 味 參 與 性 質 為 主 。 相 比 首 次 參 賽的 第 一 架 自 製 腳 踏 車 , 今 年 兩 架 腳 踏 車 無 論 在 設 計 水 平 及 效 能 上均 獲 得 大 幅 提 昇 , 最 後 工 業 中 心 在 32 支 參 賽 隊 伍 中 以 第 10 名 完 成比 賽 , 成 績 較 去 屆 進 步 不 少 ( 去 屆 工 業 中 心 在 33 支 參 賽 隊 伍 中 以 第26 名 完 成 比 賽 ), 而 且 工 業 中 心 比 賽 使 用 的 腳 踏 車 亦 僥 倖 地 沒 有 損壞 或 發 生 故 障 。 工 業 中 心 憑 較 佳 的 機 械 設 計 及 性 能 更 獲 得 大 賽 的優 秀 工 程 大 獎 (Chief Marshal’s Award for Engineering Excellence), 成 績 令 人 雀 躍 。工 業 中 心 衷 心 感 謝 VelocityRacers 贊 助 腳 踏 車 零 件 , 並 派 出 活 力十 足 的 車 手 與 工 業 中 心 一 同 組 成 隊 伍 參 加 比 賽 。1.
