CROSS Cross COUNTRY countryW&L CROSS COUNTRY HISTORYCross country at W&L dates back to 1914 and in 1921 former Olympian ForestFletcher coached the Generals to the South Atlantic Championship. Cross Countrylater became the first women's program to compete at W&L in 1985, W&L's first yearof coeducation.One of the most instrumental figures in the program at W&L was Dick Miller whoserved as the men's coach from 1952 to 1988 and as the women's coach for theirfirst two seasons. Miller guided W&L to over 200 victories and coached W&L's firstAll-American, Angus McBryde in 1983.John Tucker has been the men's coach since 1989 and has led W&L to five ODACtitles, one regional title and the school's first NCAA Division III championship berth in1995.W&L's women's team has become one of the most respected programs in the region.The Generals have won nine of the last 16 ODAC titles, including last season.DICK MILLER CROSS COUNTRY COURSEWinding through the hilly woods west of the campus, Washington and Lee's newlydedicated Dick Miller Cross Country Course features two demanding courses whichoffer many challenges for both men and women. Both courses, 8,000 meters for themen and 6,000 meters for the women, are entirely on natural surfaces except for roadcrossings.Both courses start on the playing fields above Wilson Field near the W&L TurfField. Portions of the course pass by the Liberty Hall ruins which are a landmark fromthe University's earliest years when it was known as Liberty Hall Academy.Both the men's and women's courses descend quickly from the playing fields downto the Maury River, climb back up to the fields and descend again to the river beforeclimbing up once more to finish near the turf field.W&L sophomore Alex Mahoney claims the men's course record (27:46), while AmyBower of College Misericordia holds the women's course 5K record (19:10).15
