<strong>Washington</strong> washington <strong>and</strong> leeJOHN TUCKER, MEN'S HEAD COACHJohn Tucker is in his 18th season directinghis alma mater’s men’s cross country team,serving also as an assistant coach with the men’s<strong>and</strong> women’s track programs. He is a three-timeUSA Track & Field Level II certified coach.Tucker has helped establish the cross countryprogram into one of the best in the league <strong>and</strong>the region over his 17 years. W&L has won theleague championship five times <strong>and</strong> has placedsecond six other times in his 17 years. W&L hasalso finished in the top eight in the region 11 ofthe last 17 seasons, including a first-place finishin 1995 to earn a trip to the NCAA Division IIIchampionships. Tucker was named the NCAASouth Region Coach of the Year that year <strong>and</strong>has been named the ODAC Coach of the Yearfive times, including following the 2005 season.Last season, Tucker led the Generals to their second consecutive Virginia State<strong>and</strong> ODAC Championship <strong>and</strong> helped guide Nathan Johnson to ODAC Runner of theYear honors <strong>and</strong> a third place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional. Johnsonwent on to compete at the NCAA Championships <strong>and</strong> placed 62nd out of 211 runners.The Generals placed fourth overall at the NCAA Regional.Tucker is a 1977 graduate of W&L, where he was a four-year track letterman <strong>and</strong>a two-year captain. The sprinter was a member of ODAC champion <strong>and</strong> school-recordsetting relay teams in 1976 <strong>and</strong> 1977. He also won the Forest Fletcher Trophy for overallexcellence <strong>and</strong> sportsmanship his last two years.Following graduation, Tucker served as an assistant track coach at the neighboringVirginia Military Institute. In 1984, he became the head coach of track <strong>and</strong> cross countryat Charlotte Country Day School, leading the school to two state <strong>and</strong> three conferencechampionships before returning to his alma mater in 1989.Tucker is still an active competitor at the master’s level, earning All-America honorsin five different events <strong>and</strong> collecting four silver medals in USA Track & Field nationalcompetitions.In 2000, Tucker was thegold medalist at the USA Track& Field National Championshipsin the 50-54 pentathalon whichincludes the long jump, javelin,200 meters, discus <strong>and</strong> 1,500meters.Tucker <strong>and</strong> his wife,S<strong>and</strong>ra, make their home inRockbridge County.4
