Dear Friends: 

The theme for last year’s Annual Report was “Celebrating 

Student Success.” We could have used the 

same theme this year as well. As you read these 

pages, I think you’ll be impressed by the accomplishments 

of our students and the accolades that they 

have earned. 

Another talented group at SUNY Delhi that contributes 

so much to the success of our students is 

our incredibly dedicated faculty and staff. They are 

passionate about providing students with the tools 

they need to succeed. They truly make Delhi distinctive 

and are a critical factor in SUNY Delhi becoming 

recognized as a student-centered college. On the following pages, you will learn 

about the state and national honors they have received. We’ve also highlighted 

some of these outstanding individuals, to give you an up close and personal look at 

how they make a Delhi education special for students. 

SUNY Delhi is a “hot college,” thanks to the efforts of our faculty and staff. Consider 

these results: 

• Enrollment is at its highest level since 1981 with nearly 2,600 students. 

• The academic credentials of this year’s incoming class are the strongest 

in the college’s history. 

• Off-campus enrollments continue to grow, particularly the four-year degree 

offerings in Schenectady. 

• New academic programs are being added at both the associate and 

baccalaureate levels. 

• Student activities programs are ranked among the nation’s finest. 

• Our athletics program produced four national championship teams. 

• Facilities and student services continue to be enhanced. 

You are an important part of the Delhi success story as well. Thanks to your generosity, 

we have been able to increase scholarship aid, expand academic and student

Enhancing Academic 

Excellence 

To paraphrase the business world—at Delhi, academic 

excellence is Job 1. Our faculty and staff have designed 

a stimulating and supportive learning environment 

that encourages student achievement. This approach 

has raised the academic profile of the college and 

plays a vital role in the college’s continuing enrollment 

growth. It has also led to increased recognition for 

faculty, staff, students and programs at the state and 

national levels. 

Awards 

• SUNY Awards—Four faculty and staff earned the 

State University’s highest honor, the Chancellor’s 

Award for Excellence. Honorees included: Professor 

John Sandman, Excellence in Teaching; Professor 

Gary Edwards, Excellence in Faculty Service; 

Assistant Librarian Joyce Hagen Sen, Excellence 

in Librarianship; and Registrar Richard Nabinger, 

Excellence in Professional Service … Associate Professor 

Michael Petrillose received the Chancellor’s 

Recognition for Research and Scholarship in the 

Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. 

• Academic Advising Honors—Associate Professor 

Michael Branigan was one of 10 faculty nationwide 

named an Outstanding Advisor by the National 

Academic Advising Association (NACADA) 

… Associate Professor Linnea Burwood earned an 

Outstanding New Academic Advisor Certificate of 

Merit from NACADA. 

• Art Awards—LaToya Davis, a Business Administration 

major from Brooklyn, and Francis Spellecy, 

a Hotel and Restaurant Management major 

from Hornell, earned Best of Show Awards at the 

annual SUNY Student Art Exhibit. Delhi was the 

only College of Technology to have student work 

selected for this prestigious exhibition. 

• Rosalie Higgins, Dean of the Business and Hospitality 

Division, was presented with the Phi Theta 

Kappa Advisor Continued Excellence Award. 

• The Culinary Team captured the American Culinary 

Federation’s New York State Hot Food Team 

Championship for the fifth consecutive year. In 

addition, students partnered with faculty to earn 

Professor John Sandman, recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s 

Award for Excellence in Teaching, served as keynote 

speaker at Delhi’s 2005 Convocation. 

five gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze 

medal at the Société Culinaire Philanthropique 

at the International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant 

Show in New York City. 

Accreditations 

• Delhi’s associate degree Culinary Arts program 

earned prestigious accreditation from the American 

Culinary Federation. 

• The Electrical program received the Institute for 

Sustainable Power Quality accreditation for its Photovoltaic 

Design and Installation training program. 

Delhi is one of only two colleges in New York State 

to earn accreditation. 

• The Veterinary Science Technology program continues 

to be the model for excellence in the nation, 

earning re-accreditation for five more years. 

New and Noteworthy 

• Chi Alpha Epsilon, the EOP-sponsored developmental 

student honor society, inducted eight new 

members. Retired EOP Counselor Zetla Elvi was 

also accorded honorary membership status. 

• Visiting Writers and Poets—Poet Meg Kearney 

gave a public reading of her work, thanks to support 

from the Erpf-Sanford Visiting Scholar Endowment, 

New York State Council on the Arts—Rox- 

bury Arts Group, and the Liberal Arts and 

Sciences Division. 

• The Freshman Four program, developed to 

complement Freshman Seminar and support 

the transition to college for first-time students, 

earned the 2005 Student Success Programming 

Initiative Award from the Association for the 

Promotion of Campus Activities. 

• Tourism Conference—Delhi was one of three 

State University campuses invited to participate 

in the Governor’s Conference on Tourism at 

Lake Placid. 

• The Olive B. Price Special Collections Room 

for Nursing and Allied Health Care was completed, 

providing nursing students with dedicated 

study space and technology resources. The room, 

the first of its type in the Resnick Library, was 

funded by a grant from the A. Lindsay and Olive 

B. O’Connor Foundation. 

• Living and Learning Communities—DuBois 

Hall renovations included improved classroom 

and meeting space to support the V-Step Living 

and Learning Community for Veterinary Science 

Technology majors, Freshman Seminar classes, 

study groups and club activities. 

SUNY Delhi is the only two-year veterinary science 

technology program in the nation that houses a primate 

colony on its campus. This year a baby was born to the 

colony, giving students new opportunities in primatology.

Thanks to the efforts of 

Professor Bob Morris (pictured), 

SUNY Delhi has emerged as a 

leader in photovoltaics. 

• Baccalaureate Programs—New programs approved 

include: Bachelor of Technology (BT) in 

Architectural Design and Building; Bachelor of 

Business Administration (BBA) in Technology 

Management/Information Technology; BBA 

in Club Management; and a BBA in Travel and 

Tourism Management that Delhi will offer on 

the campus of Schenectady County Community 

College. 

• Associate Programs—New associate degrees in 

Criminal Justice Studies and Office Administration 

and Management were approved. An Undeclared 

Major was also introduced. 

• Orientation—“The Rising Star” program, an 

eight-week leadership development and mentoring 

program, was introduced for incoming 

students.

• Special Programs—“In Her Shoes,” a powerful, 

interactive simulation exercise that illustrated 

what it is like to be a domestic violence victim, was 

conducted as part of Domestic Violence Awareness 

Month …“Friends—One Day, Wrong Turn,” an 

exhibit portraying the unintended consequences of 

drinking and driving, was a highly effective educational 

resource for SUNY Delhi students, area high 

school students and community residents … The 

“Theory and Practice of Peer Education,” a threecredit 

course, was created to prepare students to 

present programs on health and lifestyle issues. 

Meet/Exceed 

Enrollment Goals 

Delhi has experienced exponential enrollment growth 

over the last five years. Fall 2005 enrollment of 2,557 

students is the highest since 1981. Contributing factors 

include: 

• Targeted Enrollment Growth—Enrollment Services 

and the academic divisions partner on strategies 

to ensure maximum capacity in all academic 

programs. 

• Bachelor’s Degrees—Enrollment in baccalaureate 

programs continues to increase, with 345 students 

pursuing bachelor’s degree study this fall. 

• Housing—The opening of Catskill Hall, the first 

new residence hall since 1970, helped push oncampus 

enrollment to record numbers. 

SUNY Delhi is one of the most diverse 

campuses in the SUNY system 

• Diversity—Delhi is one of the most diverse campuses 

in the SUNY system with students of color 

making up 22 percent of the student body. Delhi 

attracts students from virtually every county in 

New York State and from four international countries. 

• Off-Campus Sites—Offering the BBA in Hospitality 

Management at Schenectady County Community 

College has proved so popular that additional 

programs are planned for the future … The 

“College in the High School” program, which gives 

area high school juniors and seniors the opportunity 

to take college-level classes, has expanded to 

include 19 local school districts. 

Increase Student Retention 

and Graduation 

Delhi’s focus on improving student retention and 

graduation rates is producing impressive results. For 

example, Freshman Seminar became a requirement 

for first-time Liberal Arts majors and student grade 

point averages rose by 20 percent. Students in the 

V-Step Living Learning Community for Veterinary 

Science reported GPA’s 39 percent higher than 

their peers. The new EOP Summer College helped 

improve the academic standing of Educational Opportunity 

Program students by 56 percent compared 

to the previous year. SUNY Delhi’s student life 

programs are recognized as one of the most dynamic 

and innovative in the SUNY system. The college’s 

focus on student retention and graduation goes even 

further. It’s a total campus effort. Highlights include: 

• National Honor—Campus Activities Today rated 

Delhi the top small college in the country and one 

of the top six nationally for student activities. 

• Community Service—Students completed over 

6,000 hours of community service with 35 area 

non-profit agencies through the auspices of the 

O’Connor Center for Community Service …. The 

Interfaith Council received the “Student Initiative 

Award” from the SUNY Association of College 

Trustees for organizing an alternative spring break 

trip to work on a Habitat for Humanity project in 

Vero Beach, FL … The Delaware County Association 

of Retarded Citizens honored the O’Connor 

Center with its Father Eugene Willis Good Neighbor 

Award … The student chapter of the New York 

State Association of Veterinary Technicians was 

named recipient of the President’s Award for Community 

Service in recognition of completing 624 

hours of public service during the academic year. 

EOP hosted its second Summer College for students, 

featuring many confidence building activities. 

• Residence Life—Over 180 programs and events 

were sponsored last year by Residence Life. Popular 

events included: The Multicultural Fest, a celebration 

of student and world-wide cultures; the Snow 

Ball formal dinner-dance; Winterfest; and trips to 

Dorney Park and the Utica Zoo. 

• Celebrating Diversity—“Sample the World,” a program 

of international foods, heritage and cultural 

tourism, was sponsored by the Association of Travel 

Executives. 

• Health and Counseling—A part-time health educator 

and a psychiatric nurse practitioner were added 

to support the mental health needs of students. 

• EOP Summer College—In addition to academics, 

EOP Summer College also included a town/gown 

dinner, recreational activities and a joint field day 

with EOP students from SUNY Oneonta.

• Student Employment—Special incentives, including 

free housing, were offered to students interested 

in employment at the college during the summer 

… The payment process for student employees was 

also improved. 

• Scholarships—Two new scholarship endowments 

for students were established—the Jeremy Morris 

Memorial and the Laurel Murphy Memorial. 

• Community Support—Medical and emergency 

services to students were enhanced by donations 

from the College Association at Delhi to O’Connor 

Hospital and the Delhi Fire Department. 

Generate Resources 

State support covers only the essential costs of a 

Delhi education. Outside resources are essential to 

provide the special features that are a critical part of 

the Delhi experience. Support for Delhi comes from 

many areas. The generosity of alumni and friends 

provides vital unrestricted gifts to support student 

scholarships and campus priorities. Our faculty and 

staff are investing in the college as well. State and 

federal grants fund innovative programs and services 

for students. Business and industry provide valuable 

laboratory supplies and materials. The college is also 

becoming increasingly entrepreneurial, knowing that 

it must set the standard for generating resources. 

Resource generation activities last year included: 

• Perkins Grants—A total of $352,017 in Perkins 

Grants was received from the New York State 

Education Department to fund student success 

initiatives and technology upgrades for academic 

programs.

• Center of Excellence—Congressman John Sweeney 

awarded $250,000 to SUNY Delhi to support 

the Center of Excellence (COE) in Water Quality. 

Congressman Sweeney, in conjunction with New 

York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, had previously 

awarded the COE a $1 million grant. The 

COE is a joint educational and economic development 

initiative led by SUNY Delhi and the College 

of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse. 

• Corporate Service—Delhi’s Corporate Service 

Office has generated more than $100,000 through 

contracts to develop training programs for the New 

York State Office of General Services and the Civil 

Service Employees Association. 

New VitaSim mannequins, purchased with grant funds 

from the National Student Nurses Association, give Delhi’s 

nursing students the opportunity to practice real-life patient

• CADI—The College’s auxiliary services corporation 

dedicated $27,500 to student scholarships and 

$74,500 to support campus initiatives this past year. 

• In-Kind Gifts—Faculty contacts led to extensive 

donations of equipment and supplies to support 

academic program instruction. Leading the way was 

$125,923 in refrigeration and air-conditioning supplies 

for lab use from the Meier Supply Company. 

The industry is extremely supportive of Delhi’s 

construction technology and building trades programs, 

contributing construction materials for lab 

use throughout the year. Golf course maintenance 

equipment for instructional use, along with animal

supplies and equipment for the Veterinary Science 

Technology program, were among the headliners as 

well. 

• Nursing—The National Student Nurses Association 

awarded the Nursing and Allied Health program 

a $24,403 grant to purchase state-of-the-art 

lab equipment. 

• Scholarships—The Merrill Family Foundation 

agreed to expand its scholarship support to include 

Computer Information Systems and Information 

Technology programs. The Oregon-based foundation, 

which had previously been supporting Delhi’s 

Veterinary Science Technology, has increased its 

commitment to SUNY Delhi from $5,000 in 2001 

to $50,250 for 2005-2006. 

• Kudo—SUNY Delhi was named to the Circle of 

Excellence for improving fund raising over the last 

three years by the Council for the Advancement 

and Support of Education, the national organization 

for college advancement professionals. 

• University Police—A grant from Delaware County 

Stop DWI funded new testing equipment for University 

Police. 

Increase Efficiencies 

Through the Use of 

Technology 

Technology is the cornerstone of a Delhi education. 

It is also a critical management tool. The college has 

devoted considerable time and resources to maximize 

technology use to improve service and to make 

operations more efficient and more student focused. 

Delhi’s efforts received state-wide attention when the 

Human Resources Department was awarded the Office 

of the State Comptroller’s 2005 Payroll Achievement 

Award for Distinguished Service. Other 

improvements included: 

• Safety and Security—A card system for access to 

campus buildings is being piloted. Plans are also 

being made to implement a web-based key control 

software system … Video cameras were installed 

in several campus locations to increase security for 

students. 

• Financial Aid—Delhi was a test campus for a new 

Perkins Loan application process that allows students 

to complete their paperwork on the web. 

• Bandwidth—A new cable contract with Time Warner 

will save the college over $10,000 annually and 

provide expanded bandwidth to students, faculty 

and staff. 

• Web—Many improvements and additions were 

made to the college web site to improve service to 

students … The application and resume process for 

position searches was automated on the web. 

• Automated Services—Software was purchased to 

better serve college and community groups interested 

in scheduling meetings, events, summer camps 

and other activities on campus … Human Resources 

automated several services, including an on-line 

application and resume posting for job openings 

that has significantly reduced paper use ... Federal 

reporting requirements were improved, thanks to a 

special computer program written for the college by 

the SICAS Center at SUNY Oneonta. 

Maintain and Improve 

Facilities 

Delhi’s reputation for having one of the most beautiful 

and well-maintained campuses in the SUNY 

system continues to grow. That’s because the college 

is committed to annual facility updates and improvements 

to better serve students. It also reflects the entire 

campus community’s commitment to keeping the 

campus beautiful and clean. Here are some examples: 

• Capital Construction Program—Three critical 

maintenance projects were begun, representing the 

first phase of a five-year, $16.9 million capital construction 

program funded by the State University 

Construction Fund. 

• Nursing Laboratory—More than $140,000 was

of Administrative Services, pitched in to plant mums 

throughout the campus. 

invested to convert South Hall into a laboratory 

facility to support the college’s rapidly expanding 

nursing programs. 

• Smart Classrooms—More than $75,000 was dedicated 

to create new, high-tech classrooms in Evenden 

Tower, Farnsworth Hall and Sanford Hall. 

• Residence Halls—Renovations were made in each 

residence hall. Noticeable improvements included 

new bathrooms throughout Murphy Hall and 

lounge upgrades in Gerry, DuBois and Russell 

Halls. 

• New Food Options—More than 800 students a day 

are enjoying the Commons Café, which opened in 

Farrell Hall … The Library Café opened, bringing 

coffee, snacks and upscale lunches to the Resnick 

Library and Learning Center. 

• Safety—New emergency phones and parking lot 

light improvements were made, based on recommendations 

from the college’s Personal Safety 

Committee. 

• Campus Beautification—Nearly 20 faculty and 

staff volunteers planted mums around the campus 

to welcome back students and enhance the college’s 

natural beauty. 

• High Demand—The Facilities Staff completed 

5,126 repair, renovation and emergency projects 

during the year.

Enhance Service Excellence 

This is an essential ingredient for creating a true, 

student-centered environment at SUNY Delhi. Annually, 

every college unit is asked to identify who they 

serve and how they assess the services they provide. 

Here are some of the positive outcomes this process 

has generated. 

• First Impressions—An improved and streamlined 

check-in process, complete with PowerPoint 

presentations, a special program for commuter 

students, mentoring for international students, and 

extra sessions for students with disabilities and their 

parents were the newest additions to Delhi’s highly 

rated Orientation program. 

• Residence Life—A web-based Quality of Residential 

Life survey was conducted, with the results used 

to improve the department and services to students. 

Over 350 students participated in the survey with 

more than 95 percent recommending living on 

campus in the residence halls. 

• Health Services—A taxi service was initiated to 

assist students who need transportation to the local 

hospital. 

• Textbooks—Pre-packaging allowed students to 

order their textbooks in advance from the Campus 

Store. 

The third annual Winterfest was held in memory of Marcus 

Somerstein, a Hotel and Resort Management student who 

died tragically in a 2001 auto accident. 

• Professional Development—Student Life staff 

presented training programs for faculty and staff on: 

“Dealing with the Millennial Student,” “Dealing 

with Difficult Students,” and “Student Life Reports 

from the Field” … Student accounts and financial 

aid staff held a retreat that included customer service 

training. 

• Alumni—Receptions for Delhi graduates were held 

in Rochester, New York City, Orlando and Washington, 

D.C. 

• Community Service—Twenty students enrolled in 

the Leadership Development Honors Course and 

completed their community 

service requirement by painting 

over 100 fire hydrants 

in the Village of Delhi … 

Computer Club members 

provided Microsoft Word, 

Excel and Access training to 

staff members of the Delaware 

County Association 

for Retarded Citizens … A

Inspiring Student Achievement 

Michele DeFreece, Director of EOP and Learning Center 

Michele DeFreece has high expectations for the 

students who enroll in the college’s Educational 

Opportunity Program (EOP). “I tell them right up 

front that it’s a privilege to come to college,” says 

the college’s Director of EOP and Learning Center. 

“That’s why we 

ask for their 101 

percent because 

our staff is giving 

101 percent to 

help them reach 

their goals.” 

EOP is a state 

sponsored program 

that assists 

students who face 

academic and 

financial challenges. 

“It’s true 

these students 

receive monetary 

support through 

the program, but 

that’s only part of 

what we do for 

them,” DeFreece 

says. 

DeFreece and her EOP team are committed to 

helping at-risk students so they are better prepared 

to face the challenges college presents, whether it be 

educational or cultural. She says the most significant 

of their efforts is the EOP Summer College. Each 

summer a group of incoming freshmen, who are 

identified as EOP students, are invited to attend a 

month of classes and programming. The purpose of 

the program is to bridge the gap between what they 

experienced in high school and living at home with 

their new lives as college students. The program also 

focuses on establishing good study habits. 

“The students we see coming into the program have 

had very little exposure to diverse cultural experiences. 

Many of them have lived in one area and are 

not accustomed to meeting new people who have 

backgrounds that differ from their own,” says De- 

Freece. “The summer orientation is a real awakening 

for them. It’s also a chance for them to gear up for 

the academic challenges they face.” 


EOP Summer College students attend a demanding 

schedule of classes to strengthen their skills in 

reading, writing and math. They qualify for credits 

they can put toward their degree when they begin 

in the fall. DeFreece says, “It’s rewarding when 

you realize that 

although they are 

complaining that 

we’re demanding 

too much of 

them, they can 

see the value of 

the work. They 

see just how 

much they’ve 

missed because 

they didn’t have 

the right focus in 

high school.” 

So how does 

DeFreece know 

when she’s done 

her job? She says 

very often students 

do so well 

they soon realize 

they can move on 

to colleges that 

they’ve only dreamed of attending. “We guide them 

and try to do our best to match their interests with 

their strengths. Once we’ve helped a student identify 

what he or she is strong in, you see a wonderful 

change in that student. That’s when you know they’ll 

find success.”

Joe Greenfield says teaching is more than contributing 

to a student’s success while they’re in the classroom. 

For him, it’s the start of a life-long mentorship.

numerous graduates 

move on to the next 

level. Likewise, he’s 

helped alumni make 

their next career move. 

He says it’s all about 

staying in touch. 

“Alumni call to say they 

want to hire a student,” 

says Professor Greenfield. 

“And the reverse 

is true. So many of our 

former students call 

us and ask if we know 

who’s hiring. It goes 

both ways.” 

According to Professor 

Greenfield, the CADD 

program offers students 

many benefits. Students 

and professors 

work closely day-in 

and day-out, and really 

get to know one another 

on a personal level. He says it’s the one-on-one 

interaction that creates a comfort zone. “They trust 

our advice,” says Greenfield. “It’s a wonderful thing to 

have that kind of trust.” 

In addition, the CADD program is taught as if students 

were working for an actual corporation. They 

are accountable for reaching project deadlines and

are critiqued through simulated employment reviews. 

“We’re up front with them,” says Professor Greenfield. 

“We instill in them that there are going to be 

tough issues, ethical issues, ahead of them they’ll 

need to address in their professional lives.” 

Professor Greenfield takes his role of mentor very seriously, 

whether it’s an alumnus or a student needing 

advice. He’s gone so far as to call a prospective employer 

who may be offering an internship or position 

to a student or alumnus. By making the initial contact,

is able to make in-roads 

for that individual.

the phone calls keep 

coming in to Professor 

Greenfield’s office. 

They’re calling from 

IBM, Lockheed Martin, 

General Electric, 

and local companies as 

well. They’re looking for 

SUNY Delhi students 

to fill their openings. Or 

it’s a call from an alumnus 

looking to make the 

next step in his or her 

career, hoping Professor 

Greenfield will be there 

to make a connection.

colleagues are helping 

create a sense of family, 

of being part of something larger, and that’s why 

their graduates succeed. “It’s important to talk with 

students and find out what their goals are. I tell them 

‘You need to like what you do in life—it’s what gets 

you out of bed in the morning.’ It’s my job as a mentor 

to help them through and see the different possibilities 

that lay before them. It’s only natural that 

they come back for more advice.” 

“They trust our advice,” says Greenfield. “It’s a wonderful thing 

to have that kind of trust.” 

Ken Pyle ’69, 

Associate Professor of 

Veterinary Science 

Technology 

Ken Pyle says his Veterinary Science Technology 

students don’t monkey around when it comes to 

gaining experience. At SUNY Delhi, students study 

primatology, which is a unique opportunity for those 

enrolled in a two-year veterinary science technology 

program. 

“Our focus is solid, hands-on training in advanced 

disciplines of research that other programs just don’t 

offer,” Professor Pyle says. “The work we do in our 

primatology class gives them just that.” 

Professor Pyle says SUNY Delhi’s Veterinary Science 

Technology program has the only primate colony 

among two-year colleges and that he makes the most 

of this learning experience in his classroom. This 

year, primatology students achieved a significant 

milestone—their breeding efforts produced a healthy, 

baby long-tailed macaque. “The students who come 

to this program are very self-motivated and dedicated 

to the care of animals. It’s particularly evident when 

you see them with the baby monkey.”

As a 1969 graduate of the program, Professor Pyle 

knows firsthand the work that goes into creating a 

successful career in Veterinary Science Technology, 

and he guides his students accordingly. For example, 

he encourages his students to get involved with 

national organizations such as the American Association 

of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). 

Professor Pyle has been a member of the AALAS 

since graduation and has made his mark by taking on 

leadership positions within the organization. 

Professor Pyle also knows how important industry 

ties are. That’s why he’s helped create an assistantship 

program at SUNY Delhi with Boehringer Ingelheim, 


one of the leading pharmaceutical corporations in 

the world. Through the assistantships, students who 

have a strong interest in research are able to conduct 

independent projects that are comparable to 

graduate-level work. 

He also prompts students to write research papers, 

and helps them get their work in the hands of the 

right researchers. “I tell them that they don’t need 

to be a D.V.M. or have a Ph.D. to add to the body 

of knowledge,” Professor Pyle adds. He points to a 

paper by alumna Debra Cute ’99. She shed light on 

environmental enrichment for laboratory monkeys by 

proposing the use of common fieldstones as a welcome 

addition to the monkey’s laboratory cage. Her 

paper caught the attention of top researchers who 

accepted her study as a plausible solution to stress in 

laboratory monkeys. 

Professor Pyle says that it’s the successes of Delhi 

students through their hard work and their commitment 

to caring for animals that creates a national 

reputation for the program and makes graduates 

highly attractive to the industry. He mentions names 

like Bristol-Myers Squibb, Wyeth-Ayerst, Pfizer, 

Bayer and Hoffmann-La Roche as companies that 

look to hire Delhi students on a regular basis. 

“They know we prepare our students well through 

experiences like the primatology class. And they 

know our students understand that technology 

doesn’t stand still. Our students become alumni, who, 

like me, are lifelong learners,” Professor Pyle says.

Presidential Scholar 


Virginia Perry-Unger came to Delhi knowing 

exactly what she wanted to do and with 

the funds to do it. A first-year carpentry 

student, Virginia has been named a SUNY 

Delhi Presidential Scholar. 

With a high school average of 99 percent, 

Virginia made the grade for SUNY Delhi’s 

most prestigious scholarship. It recognizes 

students from the local area who have 

strived to be the best and brightest in their 

class. “My mom got the call with the news I 

would be attending Delhi with free tuition,” 

says Virginia. “I was so excited. I thought, 

‘Finally all that hard work in high school 

paid off!’” 

Not only does Virginia have the distinction 

as a Presidential Scholar, but she is one 

of only three female students enrolled in 

Delhi’s carpentry program. “I had a strong 

interest in art, but thought that carpentry 

was more practical,” she says. “I wanted to 

do something hands-on, not doing something 

where I would be sitting behind a 

desk.” 

And she’s found that Delhi offers her the 

opportunity to explore her art as well. Virginia 

is a regular at the college’s art center 

and recently created a color pencil rendering 

that her art advisor suggests she enter in 

the SUNY-wide art show. 

“Delhi was the right choice for me. It’s nice 

that I don’t have to worry about the money, 

and that I have the opportunity to learn 

what I want to learn,” she says.

For Ryan Oakley, receiving a scholarship 

from the Merrill Family Foundation helped 

make his plans more attainable. Ryan hopes 

to someday own his own business, and as a 

four-year Web Development student, that’s 

hard to do with a large college debt. “With 

the assistance I’m getting, I know that after 

graduation, I won’t have to pay back any 

loans,” he says. 

Ryan sought out national scholarships, but 

nothing came to the surface. That’s when 

the advisor of the college’s Computer Club 

told him about the new Merrill IT Scholarship. 

The Merrill Family Foundation has 

previously supported the Veterinary Science 

Technology program at Delhi, but this was 

the first year the Merrills awarded scholarships 

to IT students. Ryan fit the criteria 

perfectly with his strong academic background 

and focus on community service. 

Ryan says he was impressed with how the 

Merrills try to get to know the recipients of 

their scholarships. “We had breakfast with 

them during a campus visit,” says Ryan. 

“They’re so generous—they even offered to 

have us stay with them if we were ever in 

Oregon!”

O’Connor Nursing Scholar 

As a recipient of the O’Connor Nursing 

Scholarship, Teresa Angell has made 

her mark as someone who is dedicated 

to helping others, locally and abroad. 

And she expects to do more for others in 

the future, thanks to the assistance she’s 

received. 

“I guess you could say I understand the 

importance of giving back,” she says. 

Teresa is a single parent who’s pursuing 

a degree in nursing at SUNY Delhi. She 

balances her studies with a full-time job 

and raising her two teenage boys. And she 

is HIV positive. 

Since Teresa was first diagnosed (10 years 

ago), she stresses that she’s never been 

sick. Teresa’s devoted what spare time she 

has to volunteering with the Catskill Regional 

AIDS group, making presentations 

to help educate and calm the unnecessary 

fears that are often associated with AIDS. 

She’s even traveled to South Africa to do 

outreach work in a country that is plagued 

with the disease. 

“Traveling to countries like South Africa 

gives you a better perspective. They are 

the poorest of the poor,” says Teresa. “I’m 

extremely thankful for what I have and the 

help of my scholarship. I look forward to 

someday going back to Africa and using 

my medical knowledge to help those 

touched by AIDS.”

The past year showed the many different ways to make a gift to SUNY Delhi. The most frequent 

type of gift we receive is cash. Each year we receive over 2,000 gifts to The Delhi Fund from our 

loyal alumni, parents, faculty and staff, and friends. These contributions go directly to helping 

fund student scholarships and some of the college’s most successful initiatives, including: 

• The Presidential Scholars Program 

• Freshman Seminar 

• Peer and Professional Tutors 

• EOP Summer Academy 

• International Education 

Memorial gifts are being made by an increasing number of alumni and friends. This year we 

are dedicating a special section of the Annual Report to highlight those loved ones who have 

been honored through memorial gifts. Memorial gifts can be used to create special scholarship 

endowments or can be directed to the general scholarship endowment, which benefits students 

with the greatest financial needs. 

Faculty and staff are becoming increasingly active in seeking in-kind gifts, which provide important 

lab equipment and materials for our academic programs. The Air Conditioning and 

Refrigeration program benefited from in-kind gifts totaling $125,923 last year. The construction 

industry has been particularly supportive of our Construction 

Technology and building trades programs. 

The golf industry has a long-standing track record of 

support for our golf and turf management programs. 

We received two unique but very special gifts last year. 

An alumnus donated a piece of property in the Village 

of Delhi. The Foundation agreed to finance building a 

home on the site, which serves as a tremendous learning 

experience for students and as a fund-raiser for 

the Technology Division and the Foundation. We also 

received a wonderful collection of historical tools that 

are now on display in the Technology Division 

headquarters. 

The campus community is being entrepreneurial in 

other ways as well. Volunteers have joined forces to 

run Regalia, a gently-used clothing store. That effort, 

begun in 2003, has raised nearly $7,000 for the general 

scholarship fund to date. 

We are extremely grateful to the alumni and friends 

who have included SUNY Delhi in their estate planning. 

We welcome them as members of the SUNY 

Delhi Legacy Circle in recognition of their commitment 

to the future of the college. 

There are many other ways to make a gift as well. 

The College Foundation offers a “Ways to Give Guide” 

that presents a quick overview of the many options 

that exist. President Vancko and I are also available if 

you would like to discuss your interests and gift-giving 

options. 

Your continued support helps highly ambitious and 

talented students realize their potential by making a 

Delhi education affordable and accessible. Thank you
