Architecture&DaylightEvery building has to mediate a new between a specific site with itsclimate and daylight, and universal human needs. How this can be donesuccessfully is shown on the following pages by four architects’ officesfrom all over the world: Will Bruder from Phoenix, SANAA from Tokyo,Jarmund/Vigsnæs from Oslo and Lacaton & Vassal from Paris. The be-all and end-all of design – especially when it comes to workingwith daylight – is always the human being. Why this is so is illustrated succinctlyby the photographs by Thekla Ehling, which visualise the buildingsof the four architects in their interaction with the user. The multi-facettedmanifestations of life that are apparent in the illustrations are impossibleto foresee during the design process. However, architects can give spaceto them in their buildings and thus ensure that they exert a really sustainedeffect on people and the environment.52 D&A SPRING 2011 Issue 1553
