Choosing the right paint brush for the jobCHOOSING the correct equipment for yourpainting job can be the difference between amediocre finish and a fantastic finish. Topqualitypaints not only give you easier andbetter coverage, but are longer lasting andeasier to clean than low-grade paints. Thereare many different types of brushes and rollersto choose from and various paintingtechniques. The following is a guide tochoosing and using painting equipment.SELECTING A BRUSHA professional-looking paint job is easier whenthe right brush is used. Avoid cheap brusheswith short bristles and insufficient bristle pack.Choose a brush made of full-length finequalityhog bristles.Quality bristles provide more efficient pick-upand steady release (lay-off) of paint, resultingin a more even, streak-free finish. A goodbrush should feel full and slightly resilient.The right brush for the paint:■ Heavy, oil-based gloss and paints, primersand varnishes require a medium bristle length,solidly packed brush for effective control.Brush the final coat on lightly with the bristletips to achieve an even no-streak finish.■ Acrylic (water-based) paints are bestapplied with a longer bristle brush. New to themarkets are synthetic filament brushes idealfor use with acrylic paint. These long-lastingbrushes wash up easily and give a smoothfinish.
