Picture: Rochelle Galloway.Keeping our localhistory up to dateBy ROCHELLE GALLOWAYIN A small quiet room agroup of women sit around atable — magnifying glassesin hand, eyes concentrating,delicately deciphering whereand when a photo was taken.Faded corners makebuilding names hard todistinguish and faces smilewithout a name.While many people wouldthink of the <strong>Devonport</strong>Maritime Museum as amuseum of ships and sailors’stories, the old building isalso home to a variety ofphoto collections from the<strong>Devonport</strong> region.‘‘This is a real contributionto the <strong>Devonport</strong> area, it isjust upsetting people don’tknow we exist,’’ historianFaye Gardam said.The museum has acquiredthree new collections thatare of importance to thePet of the weekTHERE is nothing more I’d like rightnow than to be sitting near a warm,comfortable fire.Since I moved into the <strong>Devonport</strong> Dogs’Home three weeks ago, I have watched therain fall and the winds pick up.The ladies at the home have been lovelyand have given me a coat, but in allhonesty I’d do anything to sit in a doggiebasket or on a piece of carpet.Hi, my name is Maxi and I am an eightyear-oldspringer spaniel cross.I came to live in the dogs’ home after I wassurrendered by my owner and as a resultregion — the FinlaysonFoundry, William Wells andMarshall collections.‘‘These three wonderfulcollections have survivedtime and are beingcatalogued and indexed aswe speak,’’ Mrs Gardamsaid.‘‘The collections arevaluable and can be used forresearch.’’The Finlayson collectioncame from Formby Rd afterthe foundry shut in 1990.Finlayson was involved inestablishing sprayingmachinery in the Spreytonorchards during the 1920s.Most photos were taken atstaff functions.The William Wellscollection came fromWilliam Wells who moved tothe area in 1885 to managethe River Don Trading Store.‘‘His hobby was canoeingand photography,’’ MrsI am looking for a new home.I am very gentle and happy and love acuddle.I get on well with most dogs and have beenknown to be quite a chatterbox around thekennel.I also have many friends who would like aloving home.They are Buddy the beagle cross, Jessie, ablue heeler cross, Abbey, a hound crossand Holly, a cross breed.■ If you would like to become my newfamily then contact the <strong>Devonport</strong> Dogs’Home on 6427 2178.Gardam said.‘‘He would put a sail up inhis canoe and sail along thecoast.The Marshall collectionwas obtained in 2007. MrMarshall owned aphotography studio atLatrobe and later sold thebusiness to Ron Jessup.‘‘Mr Jessup gave thephotographs to us,’’ MrsGardam said.‘‘So many people wouldhave had their photo takenby him.’’While the collection cannotbe viewed until it is fullyidentified and catalogued,Mrs Gardam urged people toaccess the museum’sinformation.‘‘Everything we’vecollected is under one roof,’’she said.■ The <strong>Devonport</strong> MaritimeMuseum is located on GloucesterAve. Call 64<strong>24</strong> 7100.BRIEFLYADHD forumLATROBE Rotary’smental health forum isthis year focusing onADHD and relatedbehavioural problems inchildren.
