NEWS FROM DEVONPORT CITY COUNCILA moment with the Mayor<strong>Devonport</strong> Mayor, Ald Lynn Laycock.<strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> is honouredto once again present the annualAnzac Day morning service at theCenotaph on Victoria Parade onAnzac Day, Friday, <strong>April</strong> 25th.Because of problems associatedwith providing public indeminityinsurance, <strong>Council</strong> in recent years,has accepted responsibility for theservice and has been delighted thatattendances have shown increasedattendances.It is particularly noticeable that manyyounger members of the communityhave joined with veterans and oldercitizens in honouring those whohave made the supreme sacrifice indefence of their country.While no one would suggest thatAnzac Day services are held toglorify war, it is important that we allremember the deeds of those whohave served Australia. And it is heartwarming to see the number of youngpeople now taking part, as it willensure that our valuable heritage ispassed on to future generations.Guest speaker for this year’s 11 amservice will be Captain StephenWilliams, Officer Commanding 44thTransport Squadron, <strong>Devonport</strong>.Ald Bill Wilson will be Master ofCeremonies.The march to the Cenotaph willcommence from the boat rampon Victoria Parade at 10.45 am.Following the service, the marchwill depart the Cenotaph and returnto the RSL Club in McFie Street,passing through the Mall.It is requested that all organizationsor members of the public wishing tolay wreaths at the Cenotaph contactreception at the <strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>Council</strong>Chambers in Best Street beforeThursday, <strong>April</strong> <strong>24</strong>th.The dawn service, which also hasdrawn large attendances in recentyears, will commence at 5.45 am atthe Cenotaph.The <strong>Devonport</strong> RSL annual dinnerwill be held at the Club on Saturday,May 3rd at 7pm for 7.30pm. Thedinner is open both to RSL andsocial members.The cost will be $30 and thoseeligible are requested to RSVP theclub by <strong>April</strong> 29th.Kerbside Recycling – General Overview<strong>Devonport</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> promotesrecycling and waste minimisation. Akerbside recycling service is providedwithin the urban area and eachurban residence is supplied with aspecial recycling crate, free of chargeto use for this service.<strong>Council</strong> pays a contractor to collectand process recyclable items. Toensure the safety and efficiency ofThings to remember● Kerbside recycling items arecollected weekly on the sameday as your household garbagecollection.● Place your recycling crate outthe night before garbage day withyour mobile garbage bin.● Rinse receptacles and remove anylids or caps.● Squash flexible plastic items andcans to save space before placingthem in the recycling crate.● Flatten household cardboards andplace them beside the crate.● Bundle and tie (do not use wire)household paper productsthis service, updated informationabout kerbside recycling is givenbelow for residents’ reference.What can be placed in the kerbsiderecycling crate?● Glass bottles and jars (rinse itemsand remove lids and caps).● Aluminium and steel cans.● Newspapers, magazines,cardboard milk and juice cartons●●separately to cardboards andplace them beside the crate.Do not put out poison orhazardous chemical bottles forrecycling.Do not put items for recycling inplastic bags.Want to Know More?<strong>Council</strong> has a local environmentaleducation program that offers arange of educational and interpretiveactivities for schools and groups inthe region. While thenew building was being constructedhe, with other officers, moved intotemporary accommodation in Day’sBuilding, before returning to theintersection of Best and Fenton Streets.While working for <strong>Council</strong>,he completed his Bachelor ofCommerce degree. But lack of timecaused by work commitments andfamily – he is married to Jenny andthey have a son, Nick, 14 – put paidto any thoughts of further education.Although much of Ian’s work isconcerned with the day-to-dayaccounting management, he isalso required to prepare regularfinancial reports for <strong>Council</strong>’s headsof departments to provide an up todate guide on expenditure.The annual account statements and,of course, preparation of budget,also require him to keep overallexpenditure within bounds.Because he is one of <strong>Council</strong>’s“back room boys”, Ian is not one ofthose officers who is constantly inthe public gaze.
